hello, everybody. you are watching getting answers live on abc 7, hulu live and where ever you stream. what we do is basically every day at 3:00 in the afternoon, we are asking with your questions and getting answers in real time. on this memorial day, we are intotravel. millions of americans are hitting the roads and skies as the country bounces back from the pandemic. coming up, we will be talking cations, a guidebook foturn
3:01 pm
vacation into three. >> we will also talk about a national memorial day campaign to honor military veterans. the ceo of carry the load joins us at 3:10. first, we all know the pandemic has been exceptionally difficult for many californians who have lost their jobs. a program is launching right here in the bay area to help people get back on their feet. joining us right now is the economic development manager for the city of fremont. she is here to talk about the program, earn and learlearlearlr thank you for joining us, especially on this day. >> thank you for having me. >> first off, give me an idea of how the program works, when it started and the nuts and bolts. >> thank you for the opportunity. i would just say that the pandemic was a call to action for all of us. the impact that we are
3:02 pm
witnessing firsthand of this pandemic on certain sector stark. women, minorities, low income individuals are hugely affected by retail and hospitality or they are stuck in a cycle of high turnover, low wage jobs. if you know fremont, the city is known as the hardware side of the bay, thanks to 900 manufacturing companies that make things here. access to talent has been there number one need for years. here we have an abundance of jobs that only ramped up in 2020, a lot of these countries were making things specifically in the life science or medical device category. a lot of people need to be connected to better paying careers that offer financial stability and upward mobility. that was idea. a deliberate effort to create
3:03 pm
the right formula to successfully bring equitable and diverse talent pipelipipelii advanced manufacturing. the first ever partnership between industry, academia was formed. the program had two goals, one was to address the talent needs and two to help those who need the most help. i would like to take this opportunity, again, to thank our partners who made this program such a success, starting with evolve manufacturing right here in fremont. great culture in the company. we also brought two workforce boards to the table, the alameda county workforce development board and san jose's work the future. these are a great conduit for us to reach the target population we wanted to serve, but also to tap into the federal funding stream to help us launch the pilot. research shows, it can be
3:04 pm
incredibly difficult for someone to make a complete shift in their career, hence the learned part of the program. we brought -- college to the table with their new smart manufacturing tech knowledge he program led by dr. rose margaret into a and that has been fantastic. we know that these all can be compounded for women. the city of fremont family resource center stepped up are you in counseling, supportive services to the table. we are thrilled with the results. >> you and i spoke about this earlier, you test about this in your first response, it is the partnership aspect of program that is so key. that is the innovative part. give me an example from start to finish of someone who has gone through all the different channels and how the collaboration has helped. >> like i was saying earlier, the results of the experiment, this program, you want to try something to bring the two
3:05 pm
together, bring in more people and introduce them to advanced careers and with one cohort we are able to help a veteran, and unhealthiest individual and women and minorities. there are 17 people that went through and completed this pilot. i will say, these people are amazingly resilient. they are driven, inspiring individuals. they completed the program despite so many barriers that they faced. all 17 have been offered full- time jobs. they are working either at evolve manufacturing or another company in fremont. another part of was a challenge it was an overlay on top of this problem. bringing in people from different backgrounds, having
3:06 pm
no knowledge or skills in advanced manufacturing. having these rights and partners, really the plug and play modules, being able to deliver the training virtually, led by instructors, but learning at the job site so we are not taking extra time out of their lives. they are earning and learning at the same time with the fremont family resource center and workforce boards, we brought in language support in some cases where there were esl or asl issues, we also gave them some counseling in terms of financial counseling, or how to be in a workplace and behavioral counseling. like i said, 100% placement rate speaks for itself. >> it is nice to see, from start to finish, the process of how each step has been so crucial. i know we have a couple of
3:07 pm
minutes. can you give me an idea of who qualifies and how long each participant will be in the program for? >> we are targeting low income individuals, underserved communities, definitely more women. that is why these partners are just amazing partners for us and they will continue to be because they are serving those kinds of populations. that is the hope that we can bring in, more of the underserved communities. we are having great conversations with the college and the workforce board to see if we can have more cohorts. the first and only -- so far was an eight week long program. the six weeks of training was an overlay on top of that, so they are learning at the site.
3:08 pm
it has worked out great, and we are hopeful that this formula that led to the success can serve as a catalyst for more deliberate efforts to bring in more diverse people. >> expanding the program going forward, even as the pandemic starts to wind down. we have a little bit of time, if anyone wants to get involved or know someone who can benefit, where should they go? >> we have a form that we developed. i do not know how to share the link. if you want to reach out, you can email us, you can reach me and my team at ec on dev fremont got gop. >> i am glad you made that distinction. nice to have you, feeling inspired for those who are in fremont, looking forward to

3:10 pm
oh man... let's get you to this moment. is that it? yep, that's it. of relief... [joyfully laughs] protection... i just got vaccinated- i just got vaccinated! noah just got vaccinated... hope... so that we can get to all the other moments. let's get you to the exhale let's get it... together. so we can be together. let's get to immunity.
3:11 pm
now's your moment to get vaccinated. welcome back. this memorial day is important to remember the reason we observed the holiday. it is to honor the sacrifice made by the men and women serving in our military, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. a nonprofit organization called carry the load is on a campaign
3:12 pm
to connect americans with veterans. joining us right now is the president and ceo of carry the load. so great to have you thank you for making the time. your organization is about finding the true meaning of memorial day. how did that mission turn into carry the load. >> carry the load started 10 years ago by myself and another former seal here in dallas. it came upon the heels of news from good friends of ours. there was not much observance around the true meaning of the holiday. my cofounder put on a backpack and went out walking and had a moving and emotional experience. we start talking about and event where we can allow people to have a meaningful memorial day experience. we wanted to raise money for other nonprofits support
3:13 pm
military, veterans, law enforcement, fire and rescue, first responders and their o now blossomed into a . ti in45 states and we are just finishing up an entire month of activities across the entire united states. >> we will get two more about the activities themselves in in minutes. i know for many and sometimes myself included, people usually see this as a day off, they go shopping, your organization really encourages people to get involved. sometimes it's not easy to know where to begin. >> it is hard for some people. the majority of americans, statistically those who have been in uniform post-9/11, it is less than 1%. a lot of people do not have that direct connection.
3:14 pm
however, we tell people what you take a minute or memorial day, when you go to some sort of function, it is important to honor and celebrate as many men and women who made the sacrifice. carrying the load is one of many ways for people to do that. again, we are in 45 different states, 45 different relay routes, we spanned the united states and we end up here in dallas. people can obviously learn more about the organization and how they can volunteer or participate, or they can donate. >> i am glad you mentioned that. often times people assume that they need to make a grand gesture. but it can be as small as taking a moment or just going to the website and signing up.
3:15 pm
speaking of, we are in the midst of something called memorial may. a series reys and marches, we just had one in the bay area, take us through how the event works. it is a big undertaking across so many states. >> we had four different relays that were all simultaneously being held. the west coast relay started in seattle, came to the west coast and made its way over to dallas. all four of those relays, over 15,000 miles were walked. 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the month of may, it highlights the importance of memorial day. ultimately, it is about letting the families know that there are folks here in america that have not forgotten and will not forget the family service and
3:16 pm
sacrifice. >> i also noticed when i went to your website earlier, i think you surpassed your goal of $1.2 million. it must be nice to see how many people have shown support monetarily. where do these funds ago? >> these funds that we raised, this year we had 50 nonprofit partners that are all across the united states and all serving military veterans, first responders and their families. we perform across a broad continuum. that can be transition assistance, job assistance, medical care, psychological/mental health awareness and training. we support what i call unconventional, recreational therapies. it is a broad spectrum, but we
3:17 pm
are supporting military veterans and first responders and their families, they are eligible to be one of our nonprofit partners. i encourage people who want to learn more to click on our nonprofit page and find out about the 50 organizations that we have partnered with and the groups that will be beneficiaries. >> it is impressive to see the broad scope of how many people are benefiting from it. i know we have 45 seconds, what is next. how does carry the load continue that spirit and meaning of memorial day throughout the year so that it is not forgotten? >> there are two things that we have grown into, both have been by happenstance. we have a partnership with the veterans administration. year-round we have volunteer opportunities across the u.s. at the national cemeteries to
3:18 pm
go clean headstones. secondly, as a byproduct of having been asked to speak at a number of schools, we have actually written a curriculum called carry the flag. it teaches kids about patriotism and service and sacrifice. we are at about 100 schools right now, we hope to be in another hundred schools by the end of this year. it is another way for folks to get done. >> we appreciate your efforts. it is so impressive to see how it has grown. i encourage everyone to check out the website. we will circle back with you as your organization continues to grow. many thanks to you. >> thank you for having me. >> coming up next, we will dig into loyalty tr

memorial day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. it appears that americans are ready to travel. i am raising my hand myself. more than 47 million people were on the move this holiday weekend. what if we told you you could turn your one annual vacation into three? that sounds appealing. here to tell us how to do that is scott, the author of the guidebook called take more vacations. scott, let's dip right in. this is the unofficial kickoff to summer. people have been vacations and they have been itching to travel. will it be less expensive for people to fly or drive? >> it depends on where you are going. if you hope to travel to europe or hawaii, cars will not be an option. if you are hoping to travel overseas, book your flight sooner rather than later. if you wait until the last
3:22 pm
minute, cheap flights are running out. they are unlikely to be many left. time is of the essence. >> speaking of cars, , , , , and -- went to hawaii a month or so ago and we realized the car rental fees were so expensive. we even ran a story in a newscast that people were renting toyota's for $800 a day. why is that so expensive? >> i looked on expedia just before coming on. the absolute cheapest car on the entire island of maui is $600 per day. north of $4000 a week. it is a funny situation where you used to be stressed about finding cheap flights, you could get a car rental for 50 or 60 bucks. now the situation has flipped where the flights are cheap and the car rentals are expensive. if you are hoping to somewhere you need a car, make
3:23 pm
your reservation early, remember they are generally free to cancel. keep in mind of off airport locations, they are quite a bit cheaper if you're willing to go a couple of miles from the airport. keep an eye on other options like touro, keep an eye on local dealerships. dealerships will often rent fleets of cars. there are folks who are even renting u-haul's for family vacations, if you want to talk about a memorable trip, that would be it. >> i remember we did that report all of the cars were being shipped to the mainland during the pandemic, now they are playing catch-up on getting cars back. >> i know you touched upon hawaii, are there other popular destinations that people are planning on going this summer? >> the most popular destinations fall into one or two buckets. iconic beach destinations, hawaii, florida, cancun and
3:24 pm
then outdoors western locations, montana, wyoming, idaho. places where you can go be at a national park and go camping, just have a little elbow room. that is where folks are really flocking to. >> i also feel like every so often i go on google and i click where can americans travel? we have the safety aspect and then we have the cobit restrictions. talk about the places that are safe to go and which countries are allowing americans to travel. >> it has been a slow and varied reopening especially when it comes to travel to europe. a couple of months ago, iceland was the first iconic travel destination that said, yes, we are willing to welcome back vaccinated americans, they can bypass any quarantine requirements.
3:25 pm
soon after, greece and croatia followed suit. you saw a lot of airlines that realized these places are open and everyone is searching for flights, the demand spiked overnight to those destinations. the airlines started adding new flights to laces like iceland, greece and croatia. now with italy, spain, france malta already open, spain will open in the next week, we can have, you are seeing the floodgates open for travel this summer, as the continent really tries to salvage what it can of the summer tourist season. so important for folks working in travel in europe that the summer season, essentially like black friday for retailers and trying to get as much tourism in flux as they can, even give them a late start. >> we mentioned europe, what
3:26 pm
about mc mc while. the cobit rates have been concerning for travelers. what do you know? >> what we have seen with mc travelers is higher than it was pre-pandemic. one reason why is not only is it beautiful, it is a wonderful place to visit, but it is so close. they did not implement any requirements to visit. you do not have to show proof of vaccination, you do not even have to show a recent negative test. that lack of requirements invites a lot more influx of tourism then you might otherwise see. in order to come back to the u.s., you do need a negative covid tests, which is why so many hotels and resorts in mc kabul actually provide this test complementary to their guests because they want to make it as easy as possible for folks to visit.
3:27 pm
i think you are seeing that pay dividends, the number of travelers to mc higher than it was before the pandemic began. >> when i was in hawaii it was very expensive when you took all of this test back to back. the author of the guidebook, take more vacations, something that a lot of us could use right now. thank you for joining
