difference yesterday. you can see the visibility at one mile at half moon bay. we are seeing the marine layer get soupier. it is not pushing too far inland. look at the winds at fairfield, 32. it is going to be a day where the heat is easing. look at the 50s along coast, 60s san francisco, oakland, 70s for the rest of the bay. 80s inland until you get to areas like lake port. an investigation into a deadly police shooting is underway in san jose. a man died after confrontation with officers near tofts and pembroke drive. amy is joining us with more. >> reporter: good morning. police are still on the scene, have been here all night. let me step out of the way and show you they have told us

was an officer-involved shooting. we are told that this happened at tofts and pembroke drive. they were working on an investigation. they haven't said what they were looking into. they were confronted by someone who was shot and killed. that's all we know at this point. we don't know anything about the person killed or why officers fired or what they were investigating. we are expecting to be briefed later this morning with more information. we did want to get to the scene and report this to you that there was an officer involved shooting overnight in san jose. police are still on the scene and the area is blocked off. officers are intactcal gear, we are seeing here, overnight where this shooting happened. stay with us. this story is developing right now. we will keep you posted with information as we get it.

amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. on the heel of last week's deadly mass shooting in san jose, vta is discontinuing bus service along light rail lines. the agency says it is too short staffed to keep the extra buses running right now. light rail service remains suspended. vta's interim general manager says it is impossible to estimate when that will be restored. right now it is focusing on regular service on established bus lines. we are learning more about the ninth victim. fritch died at the hospital the night of the shooting surrounded by family. his widow spoke to our abc7 news reporter about their last moments together. >> he didn't want to go. he was fighting so hard. the doctors were like we don't even understand how he is still here. >> that is so hard to hear. alex fritch was 49. we have set up a way to help

support the families of victims in the tragedy. a newly formed first in the nation task force to study and develop reparations proposals for black people in california is set to meet. the goal is to educate public about slavery and explore ways relevant state might provide reparations. supporters say it just isn't writing a check. it can be free education, loans and grants for a business or a down payment for a home. california made history by becoming first state to adopt a law to study and make recommendations on reparations for slavery. san francisco mayor london breed will announce her proposed city budget for the next two years. officials and community members will join her for the announcement. we'll break down the details of the budget proposal this afternoon on abc7 news at 4:00. moderna asking for full fda

approval for the covid-19 vaccine. health experts say this was expected next step now that the company has compiled six months of safety data. it shows moderna is confident that the vaccine is effective enough to meet the stringent requirements. review process will take several months. it is the second company to seek approval following pfizer last month. many people are getting back to work after the long holiday weekend. more than 37 million people took to skies and roads to see family and friends for memorial day. that's a jump of 60% from this time last year. a live look at sfo, tsa is telling us it screened more than 9 million passengers friday through yesterday. there was this sign of normal on highway 17 as drivers sat in bumper to bumper traffic trying to get to santa cruz. the beach was packed. tourists flocked back to the

pop before the fire. thankfully no one was hurt. firefighters did stay on the scene to be sure the fire didn't start back up. a south bay family is grateful to everyone who jumped in to help to put out fire spots near their home. this happened over the weekend when it was really hot and dry in south san jose. this video shows neighbors trying to put out flames near east capital expressway and center road. >> my father tried to get the hose from here to try to help blow it out. but the hose wasn't extending far enough. >> they say a couple strangers stopped to help including a driver who used his own extinguisher. the good samaritan happened to be a marine corps veteran and a current california national guardsman. his dash cam shows other people also on the scene. >> so nice to see everybody

a driver got sent to the hospital after a loose tire flew across lanes of traffic on i80 and hit a bunch of cars. chp says the tire flew off a car in the west bound lanes and bounced to the east bound side hitting a vehicle and then back west bound hitting two more cars. a woman inside one of the cars had to be taken to the hospital. we don't know the extent of her injuries. a miracle, that is how witnesses are describing a small plane's emergency landing

between and the fog hugging the coast. we are seeing a trend towards the heat retreating or getting chased by marine layer. it is bringing better air quality for today and moving forward. it will be a little bit cooler with more cloud cover and a minor warming trend this weekend. but we can handle it especially after the last two days. we'll start in the low to mid 80s for most of the south bay. we have upper 80s across los gatos. ignore that spare the air. sorry i forgot to take that off. it is not a spare the air day. 70 to 79 on the peninsula. daly city 62, same with downtown san francisco. north bay, we'll hover around 80 until you get northward and you see the upper 90s, reason you are under the heat advisory. east bay shore, 67 berkeley. oak land, richmond also in the upper 60s. around the state records are

we start with several things on live doppler 7. first, the cloud deck that is over taking san francisco. over the east bay it's starting to redevelop, a definite sign of changes on the way. so is the 32-mile per hour wind gust at fairfield. we have the delta breeze out there and that is going to spread heat relief to many neighborhoods. where it doesn't quite get, we have 90s around livermore and antioch. most dangerous heat around lake port and ukiah. 98 and 99. for the rest of us, 70s and 80s. back to the north bay, this heat advisory is until 9:00 for lake and mendocino. remember your hot weather tips. you will need them today if you are out and about in these areas. san jose police say a man was killed during a confrontation with officers overnight. this happened near tofts and

pembroke drive. amy hollyfield is live with more on the developing story. >> reporter: look at this huge police presence behind me, reggie. there are a lot of officers out here. san jose police have the incident command unit parked on pembroke drive. that's the street you are looking down. we understand it happened on pembroke drive at tofts drive in san jose. we are told it happened just before 10:00 last night. police tell us they were working on an investigation. they haven't said what they were looking into when confronted by someone and the person was shot and killed. the person who did confront the officers was shot and killed. we haven't heard why that shooting happened or who was shot or what was under investigation here in this neighborhood. so we are hoping to get more details from police who told us they plan to brief us later this morning. quite a scene here in this neighborhood early this

morning. police have been out here all night and we see no signs that they are packing up and leaving any time soon. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. happening today, a hearing for scott peterson where prosecutors will likely make it official, they are dropping death penalty against the convicted killer. this is after the county d.a. said friday she would not retry the penalty phase after speaking with the family of the victims. peterson was convicted of killing pregnant wife lacey and unborn son conner in 2005. his previous sentence was thrown out last year over issues with jury selection. he could get a new trial but if not granted peterson will be sentenced to life in prison. president biden will make history as first president to visit the area formally known as black wall street. >> reporter: over night, a

candle light vigil in tulsa honoring victims of one of the worst cases of racial violence in american history. >> it's finally being acknowledged, what our ancestors went through. >> reporter: 100 years ago a mob of white men burned down the green wood district, thriving economic hub known as black wall street all after unproven allegations that a black man had assaulted a white woman in an elevator. nearly 200 black owned businesses were destroyed. no one was ever held accountable. today president biden visits tulsa to meet with survivors like 107-year-old fletcher. she along with her parents and siblings fled the mob. >> i heard the screams. i have lived through the massacre every day. our country may forget this history but i cannot. in congrs aspa of a la uiagtyan

has a new labeling system for coronavirus variants. it is using the greek alphabet. that will be instead of calling the variants by the place of origin. the organization has identified four variants. alpha, beta, gamma, delta. there are also six interest. those are labeled epsilon to kappa. more restrictions being lifted across the country as coronavirus cases continue to go down. four states are set to hit new milestones in their reopening. jobina is tracking that. vaccines are allowing americans to inch closer to prepandemic life. fresh off of memorial day weekend president biden is looking to the next major holiday, july 4th. that's when u.s. is projected to close in on the next, getting 160 million americans

story building. only one of the lake's 13 boat ramps is open now. jimenez made a two and a half hour drive from hayward. >> this is my third or fourth time. it never was that low. no boats, no jet skis, kind of weird. >> besides the lack of snow, the ground has become so dry that as snowpack melts it is absorbed into the ground. a north bay raft company is struggling to stay afloat as drought conditions deplete the river. how low is the water? the owner says this is the first time he has seen it this dry in his 20 years in business. he is trying to make the best of it. >> prepandemic we had twice as many boats. i tell them the water is great. it is historically low. >> never had to get out of the boat and push it before. >> people might need to drag the raft 100 yards or so but he

says once you are out there, many are staying on the water for four to six hours. >> once you find a spot, you stay there so you aren't grounded again. it's very sad but i think the more people venturing out are starting to feel and see with their own eyes how desperate the drought is. we are losing anywhere from 1% to 4% a week out of our reservoirs. we are down to 90% of the historic average. we are down 10% should be. lake oroville is only 45% of where we should be. here is a look at temperatures. they are pretty toasty in our inland neighborhoods. we've got upper 50s to mid 60s in east bay. everyone else is in the 50s until you get in the hills in los gatos where it is 78. you can see the fog starting to

morning. this wildfire broke out yesterday afternoon in the santa cruz mountains in the boulder creek area, about three acres have burned. a fast moving grass fire left extensive damage at two apartment buildings in antioch. you see the flames and blackened exteriors. the wind pushed fire from one building to the other and several people have been displaced. two had to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. we don't know what started the fire. higher prices at restaurants. what's behind the increase? you might notice on the menu now. dolly parton revealing more about her life in a new interview. the very relate able thing she says she likes and dislikes.

in the next seven days. we do have some temperature fluctuations. today low to mid 80s through most of the south bay. look at santa cruz, crowdie and about 69. 70 to 79. we've got quite a spread moving north to south on the peninsula. along the coast, upper ooze until you get to daly city at 62. that's the same temperature we'll have in downtown san francisco. upper 50s north bay coast but around 80 through your valleys. look at clover dale, lake port and towards ukiah. that's where the hottest most dangerous temperatures will be. as you head to the inland neighborhood, tri valley will be in the mid to upper 80s until you good et to livermore at 91 and antioch. your neighbors will be in the low to mid 90s also. today our average high is 81 inland. after triple digits yesterday these 80s and low 90s are going
