on pembroke drive. they have their incident command unit here from the san josc they have been here all night long. this happened just before 10:00 p.m. last night, that they were investigating here on this street and say they were confronted by someone. that person was shot and killed. they have not said what brought them out here to begin with. they also haven't told us anything about the person who was killed or why that person was shot. so we are here asking questions and as soon as they are able to provide more answers, this is something we wanted to bring to your attention right away. he's about to brief us. we'll bring you more information on what happened

record low in the covid-19 pandemic. as of yesterday, the positivity rate dropped to .7%, the lowest it's been. the state reported just 644 new cases and five people died in 24 hours. a little more than a thousand covid patients are currently in the hospital. at its peak in january, that number was nearly 22,000. the covid numbers that are going up are the vaccination rates. 44% of california's population is now vaccinated. on this map, vaccination rates are color coded by county. so the higher the vaccination rate. if you have questions about vaccines, ask our vaccine team by going to abc7news.com/vaccine.

this morning support is pouring in for tennis star naomi osaka. the world's number two player withdrew from the french open, praised osaka's decision, saying taking the high road when the powers that be don't protect their own. osaka decided before the french open not to do press conferences because of her struggle with anxiety and depression. officials fined the star $15,000. yesterday she announced she was stepping away from tennis for now to prioritize her mental health. good morning america has reaction from fellow tennis great serena williams.

weekend forecast coming up. we are looking at the metering lights on the bridge, very different view because it was so empty. the richmond san rafael bridge is nice and clear. starting monday, bart is adding 26 trips to the weekday schedule and doubling the number of 15 minute frequencies. more than a dozen trips will be added for saturday service as well and they will rohnert park all the entrances and exits that were closed during the pandemic by june 15th. august30th, they will expand service hours. weekday service is coming back,

a south bay family is grateful to everybody who helped put out the flames in their home over the weekend. this video shows neighbors trying to put out the flames near east capitol expressway and center grove.

>> my father tried to get the hose to help blow it out but the hose wasn't extending far enough. >> a couple of strangers stopped to help, including a driver who used his own extinguisher. that was a current california guardsman and former marine. the family believes firefighters were responding to a bigger fire when the smaller ones started to break out. a driver was sent to the hospital after a loose tire flew across traffic on i-80 yesterday afternoon and hit a bunch of cars. chp says it flew off a car driving in the westbound lanes and bounced to the eastbound side, hit a vehicle, then bounced back westbound, hitting two more cars. a woman inside one car was taken to the hospital.

we don't know the extent of her injuries. people are calling this a miracle. that plane landed right on 101 last night. the single engine cessna appeared to be intact after the pilot radioed that he had an emergency landing that needed to happen and the reason wasn't clear. a tiny airline passengerrer in pittsburgh was making people smile as they boarded the flight. check this out. the 1-year-old was waving and smiling at everybody as they got on to the flight. her no, ma'am says she just loves waving at everybody she meets. >> i love it. she's saying keep your mask on, behave, don't get into fights

rapids. dipping down here, coming back up. that's fantastic. i need to put a time lapse of that together. this is the tower, just above the clouds. the heat is retreating today and better air quality is moving in behind it. we're cooling tonight but a minor bump in the temperatures for the weekend. 80s in the south bay, 83 in san josc we drop to 70 at san bruno, mid- to upper 50s along the coast. north bay valleys around 80, but remember they were mid- to upper 90s up north there. look at these upper 60s for richmond and berkeley.

there was a possible shark sighting in pacifica on sunday. police say this is a good reminder for beach goers to be aware of what's around them at all times. it was crowded but there were no signs to warn people about sharks. the supreme court could announce whether it will a verdict involving johnson & johnson baby powder after women said it caused their cancers. last year a study found no evidence to support that claim. target is reopening its fitting rooms starting today.

paid for the $1.8 million in property loss claims dating back 100 years. moderna is asking for full fda approval for its covid-19 vaccine. experts say it was an expected next step, now that the company has compiled six months of safety data. the company is confident the vaccine is safe enough and effective enough to meet the stringent fda requirements. the world health organization has a new labeling system for coronavirus variants. it's using the greek alphabet, instead of calling them by the place of origin. they have four areas of concern and there are six variants of interest. these won't replace the existing names but are meant to make it easier for the general

public to follow. more covid restrictions being lifted across the country as coronavirus cases continue to drop. today four states are set to hit new milestones with their reopening. >> reporter: experts say americans are inching closer to prepandemic life. president biden is looking ahead to july 4th, when the u.s. is expected to close in on getting 160 million americans fully vaccinated. this weekend was a sign of how far the nation has come. >> we can finally shake hands, enter places without masks. this is the way it should be. >> today four states are taking steps forward in reopening. in pennsylvania, businesses and gyms can open at full capacity.

michigan is allowing restaurants to open indoor dining at 50% capacity. in new york there are no restrictions for the first time since the pandemic began. in nevada, casinos in las vegas can once again operate at 100% capacity. a north bay raft company is struggling to stay float. how low is the water? this is the first time the owner has seen it this dry after being in business for 20 years. >> prepandemic we had twice as many boats on the water. the water is great. it's historically low. >> never had to like get out of the boat and push it before. >> with the river this low, many may need to drag the raft 100 yards or so according to the owner, but once they get out there, he says many stay

out four to six hours. let's take a look at the reservoirs. over the course of a week, every single one of our main reservoirs has dropped. look at that. we're going to use a lot when it gets this hot. we are in the mid- to upper 50s with partly cloudy skies in the south bay. we have broken out of the 50s, still in the 60s in the east bay. for the few kids still going to school, you can see we're foggy near the coast. we have increasing sunshine, 50s at the coast and 70s and 80s for most of us as we head

through the afternoon hours. so make sure you slow down if you're driving across there, dangerously low visibility. small craft advisory on the bay this afternoon and the air quality will be pretty decent. tree and grass pollen will be moderate. we'll beyond the thursday forecast coming up. good morning, everyone. this is a look at the bay bridge here because the toll plaza camera is so dirty. but there is a backup at the toll plaza, metering lights on there. once you make it through, you're at the limit on the bridge. sanmateo bridge, traffic is still at the limit there. there have been a number of bart updates that are coming this summer. the first one will be this monday for the weekday schedule, adding 26 additional trips and doubling the number of 15 minute frequencies.
