firefighter who died at the scene. a 54-year-old fire captain was also shot. he was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery where he is now in stable condition. the gunmen left the fire station and barricaded himself inside of his home and then set it on fire. he was found dead with a self- inflicted gunshot wound. >> i heard the helicopters outside. i came out and saw dozens of police cars arriving and saw the smoke from the house but not a single fire engine. i knew it wasn't just a house fire. >> the firefighter who died worked with the department for more than 20 years. detectives are investigating the motive. an hour from now the santa clara county sheriff's office will update the vta shooting and will release body camera footage. we will bring that to you live when that happens. we have support on for the victims families. >> reporter: nearly one week after the bay area's cility as employee unleased terror that no one saw coming before

tulsa.meitof greenwood. a thriving hub of black-owned businesses in tulsa, oklahoma nicknamed black wall street. untold amounts of generational wealth wiped out in 24 hours. it left an estimated 300 black americans dead and 10,000 displaced. president joe biden today visiting the greenwood cultural center and meeting with survivors of the massacre and other descendents. >> the pain of that day is still fresh. so is her pain for a lack of reckoning. no one was ever punished or held accountable for the massacre. there is currently a lawsuit against the city of tulsa for estimated $1.8 million in property claims loss from back then. >> some are so her

study and develop proposals if president joe biden supports it but it will face an uphill battle in the senate. in california a first in the nation task force meant to begin a two-year study on possiblereraons fo black community impactby slavery. liz kreutz is joining us with more on the landmark meeting and what they hope to achieve in the long run.long run.long r. >> this was the first meeting for the california reparations task force which as you mentioned was the first of its kind in the country. it was proposed by shirley weber when she was an assembly member and signed into law last year by governor newgovernor n more than a year after the killing of george floyd prompted a nationwide racial awakening, a california task force leading the way in the push for equity. today, the california reparations task force met for the very first time marking the beginning of a two-year process to consider reparations for the black community. >> i think my ancestors would want me to say to you always, it is time. it is time for folks to

eligible, some people have suggested those who can trace their heritage to slavery. prof. powell says it should be broader given the discrimination black communities have faced fo generations. thank you, liz. shifting gears, let's take a live look outside from our mount tam camera. temperatures a little more pleasant and spots as in not so hot. we will check in with spencer for the forecast. >> what you just so is a reason it is not so hot. here is a look at what is going on. we have some inland heat holding on especially in parts of the north bay where a heat advisory remains in effect for virtually all of lake county and the eastern two thirds of mendocino county until 8:00 this evening. temperatures highs range from 90 is up to 100 degrees. again, the heat advisory expires tonight. >> in any event i will show you the current wind speeds. we have quite a cooldown from

yesterday. eight degrees to 11-12 or 14 degrees. along with the heat retreating we also have quite a significant cooldown and it is breezy out there as it has been as of late around the bay area. we have the strongest breezes near the coast with wind speeds of 20-25 mph. in some inland communities we have wind speeds of 15-22 mph. some of those areas will get gustier later in the evening. i will have the full forecast coming up a little bit later. california is building on the progress made in the fight against covid-19. the seven day test positivity rate is .7%. that is really low. approximately 17 million californians, roughly 43% are fully vaccinated. today, moderna said it is confident they will receive full fda approval for their vaccine now that it has compiled six months of safety data. to bay area counties advancing tiers and the

developing on the peninsula and a critical juncture in lacey peterson and her son. they want to sort out whether scott peterson will get a new trial or be sentenced. david louis tells us what could happen next in this nearly 20- year-old case. >> the comp the scott peterson case appeared dressed in his prison jumpsuit over a camera feed while a judge discussed a path forward. you will be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife lacey or a hearing will decide whether he should be given a new trial after the

california supreme court found irregularities in a juror's statements during selection for the penalty phase. on friday the district attorney decided to take the death penalty off the table. the situation puts peterson in a potentially precarious situation. >> they have the right to put the death penalty on the table. they have changed their mind once so i suppose they can change their mind again but they did say the death penalty was on the recordthe recordthe d >> peterson first must declare whether he can afford to pay harris. if matt harris has asked to be paid from public funds. talking to reporters outside of the redwood city courthouse, harris expressed

trial will allow him to present evidence that reveals who killed lacy peterson who was 27 and pregnant with a boy when she disappeared from their home on christmas eve 2002. the bodies washed up from san francisco bay about four months later. >> essentially they are delaying the inevitable. this case is going to get overturned eventually. the facts are coming out. more and more we are learning about what happened. we think we know who killed lacy peterson. we think the information is coming out and will come out. >> the next hearing is scheduled for june 18. >> in the south bay questions swirling in san jose after police shot and killed a man in front of his home late last night. amy hollyfield with the latest. >> san jose police say they were on test drive last night around 9:45 because they were following up on and investigation. then, the situation turned deadly. >> there was a confrontation. there were some shots fired by one of our officers. subsequently suspect was struck and he was pronounced >>

neighbors. >> we know the family across the street. they are wonderful wonderful wo i am very distraught about that. >> is a wonderful nice young man. i don't know what happened. >> the family of the man who was killed has questions too.'s mother canvassed the neighborhood looking for surveillance camera cameras that can answer her questions. when we asked for comment she said black lives matter. police would not say what they were investigating in this neighborhood last night. they also would not say what provoked them to shoot whether the man was armed only this. >> it was a very deadly situation that occurred here last night which caused them to react in the way they did. this is a very complex, complicated investigation. i know there is a lot of questions right now our focus, we really want the family of the suspect -- the deceased individual to get the facts from us first.

>> there is a lot of information to share and in the next few days they will explain what they were doing out here, why they were investigating this man and why they felt they had to shoot. >> and influential california labor group kicked off the campaign to fight the recall against governor newsome. union leaders at the california labor federation says recalling this sum will threaten improved working conditions for millions of essential employees. they will mobilize volunteers to go door to door to speak with voters urging them not to support the effort. newsom has been good to workers during the pandemic fighting for stronger protections and higher pay. >> it threatens the decades of progress we have made on issues critical to working families like higher pay, sick leave, paid family leave and the right to join a union.
