chilling body cam video shows police entering the scene at the vta shooting. this school year is finally coming to a close, and the excitement started on tuesday. it doesn't get more san francisco than this, june #, full of fog and the start of pride. abc 7 news starts now. building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> we will never forget those innocent victims whose lives were taken by a crazed coward. tonight we're getting a first look at the final, terrifying, and eerie moments of the vta shooting in san jose that left nine employees dead. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> here's what first spondersan

>> reporter: in this chilling body camera sheriff's office takes us through what the five-man first contact team encountered. the police officers on a mission to locate and stop the active shooter at the vta rail yard last wednesday. a gunman, later identified as samuel cassidy. as the team reaches the third floor. >> hey, get your hands up! >> reporter: the vta employee seen here with his hand over his key card. this giving first responders all important access inside building a. >> as we move inside the dispatch center, one shot is heard. >> the team follows automobile gunshots searching for the gunman. in this part of the video, cassidy's body is blurred in the distance. >> sheriff's office, sheriff's office! >> reporter: at this point during the deadly morning, cassidy had already shot and killed several coworkers in a separate building, building b.

before law enforcement teams arrived on scene, cassidy is seen calmly making his way toward building a where he murdered more coworkers and shot himself twice. >> the contact team observes a gun in the injured person's hand. the contact team has to ensure the person down is still not a continued threat. >> reporter: more than a 100 vta workers were on site that morning. sheriff smith credits the bravery of the contact team, rescue task force, and all and responders for previce prepreventing more deaths that day. >> it was put into action by the sheriff's office and san jose police officers who hardly spoke a word to each other. they knew what their job was, they did their job and confronted the suspect. >> reporter: nine were shot and killed by cassidy. some of the victims praised for

attempting to save others. >> we'll never forget those innocent victims whose lives were taken by a crazed coward. >> reporter: when asked about a possible motive, sheriff smith says it's still under investigation. in san jose, abc 7 news. tonight for the first time we hear from the family of the youngest victim from last week's shooting. dustin dorsey shares the story of how adrian saved not only his brother's life, but that of many other. >> reporter: the family is mourning the youngest victim in the vta shooting, 29-year-old adrian. he leaves behind a two-year-old son, a wife, and countless family members, including his brother juan. >> he would do anything for us. he did everything he could for me, for my mother, for his niece and nephew. he did everything for his son. he was selfless, and in the

situation that happened, he demonstrated true bravery. ultimately he sacrificed himself for his coworkers and myself. >> reporter: juan, a vta employee himself was on his way to the rail yard the morning of the shooting when he got a call from his brother. >> he said don't come to the yard. i heard gunshots shortly after that. what i heard was a groan. it was him. he was hit. i heard him, i heard him take his last breaths. >> reporter: juan said adrian and another victim rushed into a hallway to stop the shooter from entering a room with more people inside. adrian balleza died a hero.

>> his phone call saved my life. his bravery saved his friends. and i will forever be grateful to my brother. he will always be my guardian angel. >> his guardianen a guardian angel. and if you want to help the victim, we have links to verified gofundme drives and an overall donation site on www.abc7news.com. detectives are still trying to piece together the motive in a shooting at a southern california fire station. investigators say an off duty firefighter killed his coworkers this morning at the station. the victim, a 44-year-old firefighter died at the scene. a 54-year-old fire captain was critically hurt and remains in the hospital tonight. after the shooting, police say the gunman drove back to his home and set it on fire before killing himself. sources tell our sister station in los angeles that the suspect was involved in an ongoing

dispute with a coworker. >> i never thought that when our firefighters face danger, that they would face that danger at one of our community fire stations. >> the firefighter who died worked at the fire department for more than 20 years. the alameda county fire department is flying its flag at half staff in the wake of shooting. the department tweeted this photo saying our hearts go out to the los angeles county fire department, family, friends, and the community. happening now, through the fall, the pink triangle on twin peaks in san francisco is lit up for the official kickoff of pride month. kate larsen was there as the pink torch made its way through the city. >> 3, 2, 1! >> reporter: shining through the fog, 2700 pink led lights now send a signal to the bay

area and beyond that pride month has begun. once a mark of hate in nazi germany, the pink triangle is now a symbol of something else. >> the hope it inspires is standing out here in the freezing cold today, nothing is stopping us from lighting up the pink triangle in san francisco today. >> reporter: mayor breed and speaker nancy pelosi made the trek up twin peaks for the ceremony. >> tolerant? don't use that word. it's condescending. we show our pride. >> reporter: the pink torch lit the way through the city. >> the light at the end of the tunnel has arrived, and it's pink. >> reporter: these sisters got emotional while explaining what the pink triangle means to her. >> the pink triangle is the

[ chanting ] >> black lives matter! >> dozens of people marched to police headquarters this evening chanting the name of di i mitrius stanley. police released surveillance pictures showing stanley pointing a gun at officers prompting them to shoot him.

this began when police were following up on an armed robbery investigation and stanley confronted them. the police department said it's being transparent with his family. >> officer involved shooting, person of color. there's a lot of questions. people want answers. we are meeting with the family, we are sharing as much information as we can with them. >> san jose police are expected to give another update on the investigation tomorrow. we have an update on a story. fireworks are blamed for a vegetation fire that destroyed two apartment buildings in antioch. investigators released pictures of the some of the fireworks recovered from the scene. a 44-year-old man is under arrest. investigators say that suspect threw a fire cracker into the field behind the apts. e fire d and displaced 40 people. the chp issued a silver alert for a missing 84-year-old san francisco grandmother.

jean king left her richmond district home for a walk last friday. chp says she was last seen at marina boulevard and fillmore street. that alert is in effect for san francisco, sonoma, san mateo, and santa clara counties. if you see her, call 911. two bay area counties have advanced to less restrictive tears. marin county joined the yellow tier, the least restrictive. the peninsula and south bay are already there. and solano county has now moved to orange matching the rest of the north and east bay. these classifications will only be in effect, we believe, for the next two weeks. california is set to fully reopen on june 15th if current case and vaccination trends continue to hold. tonight moderna formally asked the fda for full approval of its vaccine. so far it's only been granted

emergency use authorization. the company will now submit data to the fda on a rolling basis in hopes of a full approval within six months. well, it's high school graduation season, but celebrations look quite a bit different this year as you well know. abc 7 news reporter j.r. stone is in palo alto where the e the graduates, friends, and family turned out to celebrate. >> reporter: the senior celebration is on in palo alto. they sat just about anywhere you could imagine tuesday. on the roof, in the window, and squeezed in the back of a big old pickup truck. these kids beat the pandemic and graduated. seniors from four palo alto high schools celebrated graduation by participating in a city-wide parade. two of the schools will hold graduation on wednesday. they were frank about distance and in person learning their senior year. >> it was weird.

>> crazy. >> difficult. >> a little difficult online. >> reporter: parents came out to cheer their kids on. that included mom, dad, and even grandpa, none of whom were shy about 2021. >> go back two days here and two days there and very confusing in the way it's done. >> this school year was, well, clearly disappointing. >> reporter: some of the kids who initially opted to stay home only began coming back in the past few weeks. >> definitely once i t ined i went back more and more. >> reporter: the excitement on the palo alto streets, even had the fire department getting in on the action. >> we kind of expected to have spirit week with all these events, but never ended up having it. it's kind of all happening now. >> reporter: students i talked with said it took awhile, but it's finally starting to feel like senior year, and that feeling will be amplified on wednesday's graduation when they sit in these seats and

walk that stage to get their diploma. in palo alto, j.r. stone, abc 7 news. >> congratulations to those graduates. a very brave teen in southern california took on a mama bear in her backyard when her dogs got in way over their heads. >> yeah, it was all caught on video. take a look. this mama bear just starts walking on a backyard wall with her two cubs there. that's when the homeowner's three dogs rushed toward her. the bear trying to protect her babies picks up one of the dogs by her vest, but then the 17-year-old rushes out and pushes the bear off the ledge. >> i didn't register it was a bear. i just thought it's an animal, and it's taking my child, and i must protect my child. then i was like oh my god, i just pushed a bear. >> oh, yeah, she did. she suffered some scrapes and a

sprained finger while the bear was simply trying to protect her cubs, haley was trying to protect her dogs. thank goodness everything ended okay because that could have been much worse. >> it could have. can you imagine? she said she didn't really realize it at the time, just reacting. glad it worked out. never seen anything quite like that. no, she's one brave lady for sure. but she was just trying to protect her dogs! let me show you a live video or i should say a time lapse before a live picture of the follow rolling in tonight from the east bay hills camera. came it was just pouring in, and the fog is so serene and pretty. here's a live picture from the golden gate bridge camera. it's socked in with dense fog tomorrow morning and patchy drizzle. the cooling trend continues and minor changes expected for the rest of the week.

temperatures today because of the deepening marine layer were down double digits for some areas. live doppler 7 showing the fog now along the coastline. it's pushed over the bay. we have the on shore winds that continue to drive the temperatures down as we head into tomorrow morning. visibility is low, three miles in half moon bay right now. if you're commuting in the morning, it will be misty already there half moon bay. 50s and 60s on the temperatures except 70s in ukiah. current temperatures compared to 24 hours ago are all done. 9 degrees cooler in livermore, 6 degree drop in santa rosa. it's pretty socked in in san francisco. the cooling trend continues tomorrow with santa rosa going from 87 to 81. a 6-degree drop. concord 8 degrees cooler from the 90s to the mid-80s. here's a live look from the sfo

camera, and it's overcast there. the good news is we have good air quality the next couple of days. hour by hour forecast will show that we have some spotty drizzle tomorrow morning between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. the fog continues to impact parts of the valleys, then in the afternoon it hangs around near the coastline. temperatures in the morning anywhere from the 40s to the 50s. a few spots could still be in the 60s like antioch heading into the afternoon. mid-50s coast side all the way to the upper 80s inland. we'll be out of the 90s here in the bay area, so even cooler weather. ukiah in the 90s. that's about it. if you're really liking the the cooler than average pattern, look at the climate prediction center's temperature outlook. warm to hot for the northern tier states, southern tier states and east coast cooler than average. there's a 60% chance of below average temperatures heading into next week.
