plus, this stunning video. we hear from this teenager who fought off that bear attacking her dogs. the terrifying moment a girl is swept out to sea on a raft. why this is a growing problem. and trending this morning, a big victory for marijuana smokers. a new concern surround this sky high pool and the fight over not returning to the office after the pandemic. good wednesday morning, everyone. we begin with several developments overnight after another major cyberattack on a u.s. company. >> we've learned that jbs, one of the biggest meat suppliers in the world, was forced to shut down all its beef plants in the u.s. due to a ransomware attack similar to the attack that forced the colonial pipeline gas line shut down last month and fueling a spike in gas prices and once again, this attack is being linked to russia. >> this morning we're taking a closer look look at hackers operating in russia as we hear

from a top expert on why these attacks are becoming more common and what companies can do to stop them. abc's faith abubey begins our coverage. faith, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, mona. it's too early to tell whether the cyberattack will affect prices at the grocery store but comes as demand for meat hits a new high. one of the largest meat producers in the world is the that could drive up prices for consumers, this time during peak barbecue season. >> this is a wake-up call for businesses to pay attention. >> reporter: meat supplier jbs says a ransomware attack on its computer system forced the company to shut down all eight of its plants in the u.s. the company accounts for nearly one-quarter of beef production in the u.s. and one-fifth of pork production. >> i'm sure they'll get back on line but in the meantime, it's an unknown. >> reporter: the vast majority of its plants will be back online today according to them. immediate meat shortages are likely but the long-term effects

remain unknown. >> it's affecting rain shower representation as an organization. it's very damaging. even if they're able to get their data back, which it looks like they will, there is still a toll to be had. >> reporter: this morning the hackers have not been identified. the white house has indicated the attack likely came from a criminal organization in russia. >> the white house is engaging directly with the russian government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals. >> reporter: the attack comes on the heels of the colonial pipeline ransomware attack also carried out by russian hackers which resulted in thousands of gas stations in the south running dry. colonial says it paid $4.4 million in ransom to those hackers. it's unclear how much the hackers wanted from jbs or whether the company plans to pay a ransom. >> these criminals are very sophisticated. well educated on what it is

they're trying to achieve. they're smart commuter people especially in western europe. >> reporter: abc news has been closely tracking the growing threat of cyberattacks. recently attending a conference full of hackers in moscow. the organizer of the conference, a company called positive technologies, claims the gathering is a chance for businesses to learn how to prevent cyberattacks. >> it's like boxing, right? so you start boxing with somebody and you may fail but then you get more experience every time you have it, you get more stronger and more stronger and at the end of the day you probably fight with a champion, a world champion. >> reporter: but the biden administration slapped sanctions on positive technologies calling them a recruiter for cyberspies. the white house still says president biden will meet with russian president vladimir putin later on in geneva despite these cyberattacks. >> thank you. the cyberattacks aren't the only challenge u.s. companies

are facing. a worker shortage is getting worse each day. that's according to the u.s. chamber of commerce. they're launching a program to train more people for in demand jobs. the chamber says the number of available workers for open jobs dropped 50% in the last two decades. new details about that shooting rampage at a fire station near los angeles. police say an off-duty firefighter killed a fellow firefighter and wounded a captain. the suspect's home was later found engulfed in flames. a vigil held overnight with friends and co-workers of the victim gathering asking how this could happen to such a good man. >> this morning, a southern california community reeling from what appears to be another deadly workplace shooting. >> this morning when i received the news, it was some of the worst news that i have heard in my career. >> say an off-duty firefighter shot two other members of the department at a fire station in agua dulce. one of the victims listed in

critical condition overnight. the other victim, a 44-year-old veteran of the department, died at the scene. >> when it comes to being a father, when it comes to being a fireman, when it comes to being a mentor, there was nobody that could parallel that. >> reporter: officers later found the suspect barricaded at his burning home. they say he died by suicide. investigators say the suspected gunman was an l.a. county firefighter specialist. a motive has not been confirmed. according to our station, kabc, the suspect was apparently involved in an ongoing dispute with a co-worker. >> i've always prayed that we would never have a line of duty death. i never thought that if it occurred, that it would occur in this fashion. >> reporter: this deadly shooting coming just days after fire at a rail yard in northern california killing nine people. the santa clara county sheriff's department now releasing body

camera showing the officers who first responded to last week's attack in san jose. for nearly 4 1/2 minutes police and deputies are seen with their guns drawn moving across the rail yard where they find victims and the gunman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> there were over a hundred employees on site that morning, and i believe the bravery of all of law enforcement personnel really prevented the loss of additional life. >> back to the shooting in l.a. county, investigators say the gunman was not scheduled to work yesterday, and they say he and the victims worked different shifts. there's breaking news overseas. the largest ship in the navy sank after a massive fire on board that happened near the strait of hormuz. 46 the crew was able to evacuate. no word yet on how it may have started. iran suffered another disaster last year when a missile mistakenly hit a ship during training exercises. another brutal attack on an asian-american, this time in new york's chinatown. police say the homeless man who

punched a woman in the face has been arrested 17 previous times, 8 times in the last year. the nypd commissioner is calling for changes to a bail reform law which allows certain suspects to be quickly released from jail often before their victims are released from the hospital. >> we cannot be just chasingcath and release, and when you have an individual like yesterday, from chinatown, randomly assaulting people, what are we doing in society when we're releasing these people right back onto the street? >> supporters of the bail reform law say people should not be arrested if they need mental health services. president biden visited tulsa to, quote, fill the silence shrouding one of the worst racial attacks in u.s. history. the president honored the hundreds of black americans murdered by whites during the 1921 tulsa massacre. he said the destruction of the community known as black wall street cannot be erased. >> for much too long the history of what took place here was told

in silence, cloaked in darkness, but just because history is silent, it doesn't mean that it did not take place. >> when asked if he'd support reparations for the tulsa victims' families, a white house spokesperson said the president supports a study on the issue. >> president biden also used his speech in tulsa to call for voting rights legislation. he tapped vice president kamala harris to lead the effort to push a voting bill through congress. the president spoke out against measures in several states that seek to limit access to voting. republicans say the measures are needed for security. time now for a look at your wednesday weather. take a look at this, beachgoers in galveston, texas, were watching as this waterspout developed over the gulf of mexico. no reports of damage, but more rain and stormy conditions are expected in parts of texas today. rain is also expected today across much of the eastern half of the country. the heaviest will be in the midsouth including arkansas, tennessee and missouri. showers are also going to be

package theft. primarily there's more deliveries. they are creative. >> this man dressed like an amazon driver is accused of stealing packages. he was caught on home security camera. >> it looks like amazon. i realize he was undelivering a package. >> americans shop online more than ever. experts say porch pirates are cashing in on the opportunity. now lawmakers are responding. according to to the national state legislators 19 bills calling for strict laws regarding mail and package theft are on the docket. georgia is cracking down. a new law subjects repeat offenders to felony charges up to five years in prison. homeowners should take steps too. >> conceal a package. or remove the amount of time that is exposed to someone that seems to be key. >> coming up later.
