ten days after the shooting in san jose, a federal judge has overturned california's ban on assault weapons, ruling that it violate this constitutional right to bear arms. good morning, everybody, it's saturday june 5th, you're watching abc7 news at 5:00 a.m. we'll have much more on that surprising ruling overnight on the state's assault weapons ban in just a moment, but first let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa. >> good morning, liz. starting out with just a few clouds out there. we will see a pretty nice afternoon, although today will

emergency even after the state's full economic reopening. kate larson spoke to bay areaspa officials about what that means. >> reporter: governor newsom said that california's state of emergency will remain in place beyond the june 15th reopening. >> this disease has not been extinguished, not vanished, not taking the summer months off. for all of the reasons i just enunciated, that's why we're not lifting the state of emergency here in the state. >> reporter: this confusion about reopening rules and fueled accusations among republicans that governor newsom is abusing his power. john cox said he would orheused

emergency to mask rules. some feel newsom is sending a mixed message by upholding the state of emergency, but health officials say the order will not impact their plans to reopen the economy on june 15th. >> until the governor tells us that that's not the case, which he probably won't, we are ready to open on june 15th, and we're going to celebrate that day. >> everything about this pandemic has had a political edge. >> reporter: phil ma tier said the state of emergency is not about rolling back reopenings. >> it allows gavin newsom and the feds to continue their level of funding and if something unexpected. >> 15

californians are now thousands of dollars richer as part of that state incentive program to get vaccinated. each will be notified in the next couple of days, allowing them to remain anonymous. another $50,000 drawing with 15 winners next week, and 10 people will be selected for a 30s 5 million prize each on june 15th. we saw the slow streets idea catch on across the bay area as the pandemic presented a new way of doing things. palo alto is now considering letting cars back on two stretches of highway. we take you through this delicate balancing act. >> reporter: it's friday night at both university and california avenues are buzzing in palo alto. >> people are coming from the

bay area to come and dine. >> reporter: friends lewis and joanne did just that. they experienced outdoor setting in a traffic-free downtown area. >> we've made a point of coming to streets that are shut off like this. >> reporter: the city of palo alto announced a tentative plan that would reopen university avenue to cars in july, and california avenue in september. >> at a minimum, we really love the idea of retaining the park less, and at a microelectronics mum, maybe there is a way to keep some of the side streets closed. >> reporter: palo alto officials are targeting the upcoming three weeks to survey businesses in these two downtown areas. what is playing a key factor in their decision is parking. some businesses still need it. >> but a lot of the merchandise stores felt passed by, and they've been really suffering, in part because the traffic and the pedestrians who walk down the middle of the street, and now they can walk on the

sidewalk. >> reporter: we did our own quick survey to hear from business owners. >> i think they should close this street for everybody's sake. >> reporter: university avenue, this restaurant owner, wants to keep the downtown closed. >> a lot of customers still feel a little bit uncomfortable to come back inside. >> reporter: in california avenue, the owner of this nail salon lost between 20 to 30 parking spots up front, but he says there is a solution. >> our clients can park in the back, and this actually helps all of these businesses around here. >> reporter: palo alto's city manager is set to make decision in three weeks. the san mateo county fair returns today with a unique offer. get vaccinated on site and get in free. the fair was canceled last year due to the pandemic. attendance this year will run at 35% capacity and masks will be required. the fair runs through june 12th. we have a new picture to tell you about of the 84-year-old

grandmother who vanished without a trace in francisco last week. can jean jang fong. this 4t avenue on the day she went missing. she was last seen at the corner of marina and fillmore in the cities marina district. yesterday volunteers fanned out across the area, handing out flyers. in the east bay, a pro palestinian protest has blocked an israel container ship from being unloaded at the port of oakland. earlier in the day, there were hundreds of people. longshoremen refused to cross the picket line town load the which is. >> and san francisco police are looking for a fedex company caught on a surveillance camera stealing packages. this happened last saturday at

a residential building near harrison and 5th streets. you know see the woman entering the building and dropping off packages, but moments later she leaves, taking amazon packages with her. she puts them in her truck and drives off. fedex released a statement saying the individual responsible for this incident is no longer providing service on behalf of fed ex ground, and we have reached out to law enforcement to assist in their investigation as necessary. this morning, the fbi is looking into the man who allegedly tried hijacking an airplane while it was in the air. it was diverted to albuquerque. fortunately, everyone was safe on board. we take you through the scary events. >> reporter: stop this plane! it was the phrase shouted over and over again by an unruly passenger on a delta airlines flight from l.a.x. to nashville, the man allegedly tried to break into the planes

cockpit mid-flight, but did not succeed. the pilots called in to air traffic control moments after it happened. cellphone video shows the chaotic scene as passengers and crew held the man down and hauled him to the back of the plane. delta said the flight had to be diverted to albuquerque, new mexico, where the fbi took the pan into the custody. the fbi released little information about the incident, but said there is no threat to the public at this time. >> the plane did eventually leave for nashville, and made it's arrival late last night. lisa, it's been very warm lately and, of course, very dry. >> that's right, liz. we're looking at a clear start to your weekend. low-to-mid 50s. some of our cities will reach well into the 80s to near 90. maybe a few raindrops in the

we'll see a lot of sunshine, but temperatures wide ranging. so it's going to be cool with just those upper 50s at the coast, and those breezy winds. this system will slide to the south, and that will allow for more cooling into your sunday, and then we'll talk about next week. it's 56 in concord. 55 in oakland. 53 in san francisco with those cool 40s up in the north bay. this is where we're looking at the coolest locations, there north of the golden gate. as we look at our east bay hills can are again, nice view. you can see that fog here down at the base of mount diablo. so looking at cool coast and warm weekend inland, gusty much cooler next week, and looking u that's right. maybe some rain. we'll look at that forecast mod until just a moment. here is a look at the winds. anywhere from 20 to 30 miles an

hour at the coast. 2:00, we're up to maybe 34 miles an hour, port reyes. as we get into your overnight hours, the winds dial back, but look what happens into your sunday afternoon. it's even windier out there. as we get into about the evening hours, anywhere from 40 to 50 mile an hour wind gusts here, and as we head into your monday and tuesday, it's going to be even cooler. there's a look at the absence of 80s for your monday. 60s and 70s. the winds will be breezy. in fact, looking at a fire weather watch for the second thh eastern tier of nevada, and tuesday, temperatures still anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees loavag so we've got a system dropping down from the south, and that's going to allow for the cool start to the upcoming workweek. takes us through the middle of the week. and then look what happens as we go into the early parted of the week.

this system misses us. but as we get close inventory midweek wednesday, thursday, another system allowing not only for the cooler air, but the possibility, maybe we could even get a few showers out of this system. so it's a long ways out. but the trend shows that we'll be look at not only cooler than average temperatures, but those gusty winds, even windier than what we've been used next week. warm up in the north bay for sonoma today. mid-80s there. 86 in santa rosa. look for 86 in 83 in livermore. the seven-day forecast, 70s at the coast. minor cooling tomorrow. and then looking at the winds picking up into monday and tuesday. temperatures well below average through the middle of the week. by the end of the week, we're looking at slightly warmer conditions, but we'll be watching for that possibility of maybe a few raindrops, liz,

don't do it. education key pillar we focus on here at abc7 as far as part of building a better bay area. summer break is upon us, and the end of the school year brings some mixed emotions for bay area educators. yesterday was the last day of school at guadalupe elementary school in san jose. here is what some of the educators there told us about how the pandemic school year went, and what they are hoping for come fall. >> i'm feel league leaved that this year is almost coming to an end. i learned a lot this year about myself, and about my students, but i think we're all ready for a little bit of a break after this year of changes. >> reporter: >> challenging i think is a good word for it. but it was also rewarding, as well. i never thought i would learn as much as both technology as i do know now, and i can say there are some good things that came out of it.

the children r tobeard how to be that, as well. >> this year has extremely challenging. not justcifoallydeand, of course be for parents. i think as a priority for me as a teacher has absolutely been social/emotional learning. >> it's hard to believe this school year has come to an end. definitely the craziest one we've ever had. teachers pushed out curriculum in ways they had never planned and really never been trained for. they absolutely built the airplane as they flew it. >> reporter: as we return back in the fall, what i'm really hoping for that they come back retune in a jetted, ready to learn, and we make sure that we under stand their social and emotional needs are still going to be super important, as much as their academic. >> i think students need to be

at 53 degrees. so we're cool are everywhere, especially up in the north bay. as we get through the 7:00 hour, still in the 50s, and then with some high clouds, noontime will be in the low 60s to mid-70s around the bay and inland. you see those warm areas coming into play by the afternoon. the oranges and reds. mid and upper 80s, staying cool at the coast. we'll call it partly cloudy out there, and looking at that cooling trend to become more substantial throughout the weekend into next week. we'll talk about it in a few minutes. this morning former president trump is gearing up to go back to a place that we became quite familiar seeing anymore. he is returning to campaign form. giving a speech at the north carolina state gop convention. kristine sloan preatto expect and the latest on that new extension of his facebook ban. >> reporter: former president trump taking the stage tonight in north carolina, headline this state's republican convention.

silicon valley liberals trying to facebook said it will assess whether the risk toto safety has receded. devastating numbers out of intia in the covid-19. a bay area teenage err saw those numbers and wanted to help. her work led to the purchase of life saving equipment. >> reporter: the images coming out of india are difficult to see. more than 130,000 new covid-19 cases, nearly 3,000 deaths. a fremont resident has had her eye on these numbers. >> it was scary looking at those numbers, because my family and my friend's family have been impacted. they have covid. when i got the news, i was so

scared and wanted to help in any way i could. >> reporter: as she has done with other fund-raising efforts in in the past, she got to work, and three weeks raised more than $17,000 in life- saving funds. >> i was able to build three triage centers with these funds. these funds were go towards beds in the triage iage iage ia purifiers, oxygen cylinders. >> reporter: the group raiders 55,000 dollars in total funds it's a proud moment to see the mission of the organization played out on such a scale. >> the kids in the community, they understand, like, okay, there is a lot of need, and there is something i can do, i can be part of it, and they bring some smile on others' faces, right? >> i feel like it's a

responsibility to help, especially since my family is there, but there's a long way to go. it has to come from within. you have to feel empathy from within to want to give back to the community and take time for yourself to hold these workshops and some spread the word to many people. new information from the cdc says covid-19 still pose as severe risk to unvaccinated teenagers. the study said nearly a third of adolescents, ages 12 to 17 with covid, ended up in the intensive care unit with being placed on ventilators. cdc's director called the numbers deeply concerning and urged an attorneys to get vaccinated. firefighters will soon have a new tool to help them save lived. a local fire department

yesterday unveiled a hands-free thermal imaging device mounted on the helmet. it helps firefighters see through smoke and navigate through buildings more efficiently. the device is in the final stages of development. when completed, every firefighter in that fire department will receive one. the fda has approved what is being called a game-changer weight loss drug. the once a week under the skin injection can help people lose up to 12% of their body weight over about a year and a half. it will be sold name wegothe. it was approved as a treatment for type 2 diabetes in 2017, but evidence suggests i can't help people lose weight by repressing appetite. fisher price

some san francisco children have a pretty fun day lined up ahead of them. they're getting new freshly made bikes, thanks to sfpd's annual bike build. volunteers will be up early assembling the bikes for 130 first to third graders from the bayview district. once the bikes will made, the
