late last night. what state officials want to fight in this judge's decision. >> reporter: lawmakers promising to appeal this weapons ruling. the governor calls it a direct threat to public safety. >> today it was like the judge is side-stepping reality. >> reporter: shocked to hear about a federal judge's ruling, overturning california's three-decade old ban on assault weapon weapons. >> he needs to go to a couple of the funerals and find out what the reality is of how these weapons are used, the impact it has, the devastation it has to these families. >> reporter: the federal judge said the state's ban on assault style rifles violates the right to bear arms.

governor newsom blasted the comparison releasing a statement saying in part the fact this judge compared the ar-15, a weapon of war used on the battlefield to a swiss army knife completely undermines the credibility of this decision, and it's a "a slap in the face to families who have lost loved ones in this manner." >> how do we face the families who have lost their loved ones to gun violence? with a judge saying that kind of automatic weapon is the equivalent of a swiss army knife. something is very wrong. >> it's hard to escape the conclusion that a nation with more than 300 million guns, the solution is not more guns. >> reporter: not everyone is critical of the ruling.

>> reporter: and the san diego county gun owners political action committee. the california attorney general has promised an appeal. >> thank you so much, cornell. on vaccine watch, the san mateo county fair kicked off today. carnival rides, food, and covid-19 vaccine. people 12 and older lined up this afternoon at a vaccination clinic set up at the fairgrounds. the vaccine will be available for county residents tomorrow, sunday and next weekend. there is a special deal for anyone who gets a shot.

free admission to the fair, $20 food vouchers, and four ride tickets. >> it's good on itself, and getting a better deal in itself, it's great. >> reporter: the san mateo county fair organizers say the health and safety of guests is their top priority. the search is on for the driver of a brown toyota tundra who's accused of backing over a police motorcycle. an officer pulled over the driver for a code violation. he put the car in reverse and accelerated toward the officer. he was able to jump out of the the motorcycle was badly damaged. families remembering a young man's death at the hands of police.

a memorial was dedicated to miles hall. hall was shot and killed by police in 2019 as he went through a mental health crisis. they're looking for change. >> change has to happen. >> the memorial is for all families and friends who lost someone to mental health challenges. >> last seen near the marina green. san francisco police say

officers searched the area for her today while investigators looked for possible surveillance video. we've already seen several small bay area wildfires this year, and the hasn't hasn't even hit its peak months. the north bay is making sure its residents are ready. sheriff's deputies rolled through with their sirens blairing to get people to leave their homes. the county says it has learned a lot since the 2017 firestorm that wiped out thousands of homes and killed 26 people. >> we do not want to go back to those days when first responders instead of protecting structures and stopping a fire are sitting there evacuating people and moving dogs around and doing other things like that. we don't do the chaos game anymore. >> more evacuation drills are planned in the coming weeks. former president trump today

returned to the political stage. this comes in the midst of an ongoing criminal investigation in which some of trump's former employees are testifying. >> reporter: after being mostly out of the spotlight for the past three months, former president trump travelling to north carolina today. retaking the political stage for the first time since february. >> do you miss me yet? >> reporter: saturday's appearance comes one day after facebook announced the former president's ban from their platform will continue until at least january of 2023. the social media giant cited videos like this one posted on facebook to supporters while they were attacking the capitol on january 6th. >> we love you. you're very special! >> reporter: as well as another post where trump called the insurrectionists great patriots and wrote "remember this day forever." trump blasted the decision calling it an insult to

his supporters. meanwhile the criminal investigation into the former president continues. sources tell abc news the trump organization's controller recently testified to a special jury empanelled by the manhattan district attorney which will decide to bring charges against trump, his company or any employees. one spokes whether trump allegedly inflated the values of assets when it was to his benefits and deflated them for tax purposes. >> i have legally used tax laws to my benefit and the benefit of my company. my invest sxorz my employees. >> reporter: the former president previously called the investigation a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in american history. it could be a sign that prosecutors are barrelling deep within the company's finances. we're now hearing from passengers on a terrifying

there are new details about what happened on a delta airlines flight where a man apparently tried to break into the cockpit. >> and my wife said quick, look. the flight attendant's fighting with someone. and apparently he was trying to get into the cockpit. so i dove out of my seat. and helped wrestle the guy. >> scary moments there. passengers and crew members worked together to hold the man down. he was shouting "stop this plane" over and over. this happened yesterday on a flight from lax to nashville. the plane was diverted to albuquerque. passengers are commending the flight attendant who took control. the fbi took the man into custody. the flight continued on to nashville and landed safely.

a high school senior in north carolina denied his diploma for wearing a mexican flag over his graduation gown. >> it happened on thursday in

asheboro. the student received a diploma holder but returned to his seat without the actual diploma. school officials say he was denied because he violated dress code. the student told a local newspaper he wore the flag to represent his family. word today that san francisco's city hall will reopen on monday. several city services will be available as well as access to the general public. offices reopening including the county clerk, treasurer and tax collector's office. people will have to enter on the polk side or gross street entrance. >> i'm telling you, drew, it was gorgeous out there. and so much going on today. >> so much going on. the weather is cooperating beautifully. tons of sunshine. a little windy out

the 12th annual bike sale. volunteers had bikes from 131st through the bay district. look at all the bikes out there. officers were on-hand to fix the bikes for each kid. then the kids got to show what do on a bike. they were out giving them tips on safe riding. what a special event. that is all the time we have for abc
