6:44 pm
>> my name is honey mahogany. i use she pronouns. i grep in san francisco. when it first came out i was in los angeles. i was there of southern california's underground. but interestingly, i think what pushed me to come out all the way was drag. i was in drag for the first time for friends film and when i did that, i was sort of surprised by how quickly i took to it. and maybe i wasn't surprised because i think dressing feminine lee and putting on women's clothing or shoes, that was something that i do always wanted to do. and that i couldn't do. as a kid i would play dress up
6:45 pm
at daycare. and i don't know that i really thought about my gender identity. maybe because it wasn't really talked about that much. the only real representations of trans people that i saw, oftentimes was the butt of a joke. it was never here. i did know drag queens being in the mecca of the world we had a lot of drag queens here. for me, learning about my gender was definitely a process. i came out as something else at first. but i performed regularly he became something that i couldn't live without. it was a part of myself that was any central part of my life. and, over the years especially when i went on to do drag professionally, it really became something for a lot of drag queens in particular.
6:46 pm
their persona is really a reimagined version of themselves. it was really just me. i mean it was a full representation of who i was. and yes maybe more glamorous. but i didn't quite change. i didn't feel like i was changing who i was on the inside or who i was embodying. or bringing to the world when i was in drag. i was just being myself with more glitter on. when i started to do drag on a regular basis, that's when i realized that maybe this was more than just a performance but it really was who i was. it was in those back rooms, at the stud and the white horse, and the midnight sun i got to know a lot of the trans women who are part of the drag seen and many of them actually before i knew that that's what i was, they were telling me. and there was another name to jupiter i remember being backstage asking if i was pickling.
