>> it is just one victory in the face of an alarming increase in signer attacks. abc's ike ejiochi has the latest from washington. ike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mona. the feds have turned the tables on the hackers accused of shutting down that gas pipeline but experts say whether it defers more is questionable. the department says it's recovered most of the ransom paid for the onehat supplies 45% of all fuel to the east coast. to regain control of their systems, colonial paid more than $4 million in bitcoin. on monday the justice department said it seized 63.7 bitcoins,

the equivalent of $2.3 million, more than half the ransom payment. >> bitcoin was designed to be let's -- to put it easily, it's untraceable. it's designed to be untraceable. >> reporter: crypto currency is favored by cybercriminals because it allows for direct online payments regardless of location. but in this case, fbi agents obtained the private key or password for the cybercriminal's crypto currency wallet. >> this is a first as far as i know. how they did it, i think they're keeping close to the chest, so to speak. >> reporter: these threats are on the rise. the nation's largest meat supplier recovering from a massive ransomware attack last week. the massachusetts ferry was also targeted from martha's vineyard and nantucket and earlier, a hacking group inkd new york city's transit agency. although the cryptocurrency of the pipeline hackers may be a significant blow to cybercriminal groups in russia experts believe it likely won't do much to prevent future attacks. >> i don't know if it will deter

them but pause to think what their next steps might be. >> reporter: now the biden administration is warning businesses to protect themselves saying no company is safe from these attacks, and it's emphasizing once a cyberattack happens, immediate communication with federal authorities is crucial. mona. >> ike, thank you. the biden administration is expected to issue a report today that finds nearly 4,000 migrant children were separated from their families during the trump administration. sources say hundreds of kids were returned to their home countries, but many others have not been reunited with their families. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris arrived arrived in mexico overnight where she urged people not to come to the u.s. saying the u.s. will, quote, continue to enforce our laws and secure borders. congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez says this is disappointing to see, first seeking asylum at any u.s. a 10

shooting. >> this is a very quiet community, so we would never think that that would happen. >> reporter: aiden's mom was taking him to kindergarten when she says a car tried to cut her off. a passenger in the other car allegedly fired a gun. the bullet then traveling through the trunk hitting aiden in the backseat. murder charges are expected to be announced today against 24-year-old marcus anthony eriz and 23-year-old wynne lee, both arrested after a two-week manhunt. >> there are few words to describe the feeling produced by the despicable actions of that day. >> reporter: authorities say they've recovered the gun that killed aiden and they believe eriz fired the weapon and investigators are now combing through his social media accounts including this video of him firing rifles and handguns. and this morning new details on what is likely another key piece of evidence. the suspect's car.

the 2018 volkswagen gulf is reportedly registered to lee's parents. todd spitzer says the car was captured on multiple highway cameras on the day of shooting and the make and model of the vehicle along with public interest in the case helped police make the arrest. >> this particular gulf vw is somewhat rare here, and there is about 140 of those specific vehicles registered in the greater southern california area. so we had a finite universe but we didn't have a good plate. >> reporter: according to spitzer, the $500,000 reward could be given out if there is a conviction in the case. >> that money will be divided into any number of ways to the individuals responsible that led us to the arrest and conviction of these individuals. >> the d.a. says the suspects took steps to hide their identities after the shooting. he did not elaborate. investigators say the car was found at the home of the shooter's grandmother. police say a man in an tar joe, canada was motivated
