the equivalent of $2.3 million, more than half the ransom payment. >> bitcoin was designed to be let's -- to put it easily, it's untraceable. it's designed to be untraceable. >> reporter: crypto currency is favored by cybercriminals because it allows for direct online payments regardless of location. but in this case, fbi agents obtained the private key or password for the cybercriminal's crypto currency wallet. >> this is a first as far as i know. how they did it, i think they're keeping close to the chest, so to speak. >> reporter: these threats are on the rise. the nation's largest meat supplier recovering from a massive ransomware attack last week. the massachusetts ferry was also targeted from martha's vineyard and nantucket and earlier, a hacking group ink filtrated new york city's transit agency. although the cryptocurrency of the pipeline hackers may be a significant blow to cybercriminal groups in russia experts believe it likely won't do much to prevent future attacks.
