it's official, come next tuesday vaccinated californians will be able to go without masks most places. but now business owners have to make tough decisions about if and how they would implement these new rules. good evening and thank you for joining us i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. you're watching abc 7 news live at 5:00. the guidance is coming with not much time to spare. abc 7 is counting down to the reopening of california. and as you can see on your screen we're counting down to june 15th the day coronavirus restrictions will lift statewide. that's just five days away believe it or not after all of this time. we have team coverage of the changing mask rules tonight. laura anthony is in the east bay with reaction from businesses but we'll begin with

cornell bernard he's in the newsroom. breaking down today's announcement. >> reporter: dr. borgalli layed out the new rules for mask wearing tuesday. fully vaccinated californians will be able to remove their masks in most settings starting june 15th. they're offering businesses three options. a business operator can require a vaccination verification system and the third option would be for everyone be required to wear a mask. >> those who don't believe that it is enough to have the attestation approach, they could require all individuals who enter the business and frequent an establishment to wear masks. >> there will be some exceptions, masks will still be required indoors in k through12

schools. child care facilities and youth settings. they'll also be required in prisons, homeless shelters and during travel. that includes planes, ferries, taxis and transportation flights. right now calosha is holding some hearings designed to protect employees against covid which include requiring masks for all vaccinated employees if some employees in the office are unvaccinated. we will let you know what happens. for now i'm cornell bernard live in the newsroom, live for now. >> some businesss have already announced policy changes in response to the state today but others tell us they aren't so sure what they'll do. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony join us live from the east bay, laura. >> the word i heard over and over today was confusing. one large retailer, one large store chain said they would not require vaccinated customers

wear masks inside the stores. they're gearing up at walnut creek former gym looking forward to welcoming more people back to those who want to work inside perhaps without a mask. >> it's not going to be on the 15th. it's going to be an automatic complete change. so we will transition classes, we're going to transition behavior. >> reporter: owner ralph rays does not know yet what will make his members feel most comfortable. for now the outdoor gym will stay in place. beyond that business owners throughout the bay area are a bit confused by what exactly reopening will look like on june 15th. >> i think realistically it's going to be the honor system. you know, i think it's honorous for businesses to say you have to stop at the gate and ask if you're vaccinated or

not vaccinated. >> reporter: masking for those unvaccinated will be required not optional even after june 15th. but what about masking for people seated indoors for hours next to strangers? >> june 15th kind of doesn't mean much to shake well. >> reporter: the owner of shake well tim nugent says he will add a few tables indoors but otherwise he will take h his take his cues from customers. >> we as a team are vaccinate bud we don't know who our guests are. we may put more tables closer together but it will not be what we were like before this pandemic. there won't be a full bar. our pace is going to be much slower. >> reporter: again this afternoon, late this afternoon just six days before this june 15th reopening safeway is saying officially that their customers who are vaccinated will not be required to wear masks inside the stores. the company did not go beyond that. they did not say how they were going to enforce that or verify

it. that is something that many business owners told me they are very uncomfortable with. s that asking people as their walking into their business for their personal health information. live in lafayette, laura anthony, abc 7 news. all right, laura, thanks very much. >> it's all a bit tricky isn't it. the giants announced plans for when the state reopens on june 15th. protocols will change in phases with the goal of transitioning to that typical ballpark environment by the 25th. it starts they're only strongly recommended. and season ticket members will be back at their original seats. there will be some socially distanced seating but the section designated for vaccinated people is going away all together. now we have a complete list of what other restrictions will and won't change. come the 15th of june.

been tracking these incidents. everything from harassment to vandalism to some extreme cases in other parts of the country violence. >> we saw a 75% increase in the two week period after violence started between israel and the gaza strip as compared to the two weeks prior. >> reporter: last month the habad of valley was also vandalized. >> it was death to israel. terrorism. >> people have every right in the world to criticize the state of israel. that is not in semitic. >> the young students responded by painting this message of peace. >> we'll be more loud about our

message of peace in our community. >> reporter: liz kreutz. a suspect has been arrested in connection with an attack that left a san francisco market owner partially wounded. we first brought you the story last night. peter yohanis was stabbed at the store he's owned for 25 years. he's lost his left eye from the attack. police say they arrested the suspect monday after he was accused of a robbery in the south of market area. officers say they then linked him to last year's attack. many city fees get reduced or eliminated in a statement mayor breaed and the city treasurer say a disproportionate income. street artist licensing, medical examiner fees, city i.d. card fees and some animal care and control fees. the mayor is also directing other city agencies to review their fines over the next year

to see what can be done. putting money where your mouth is. that's a cliche obviously but that's the strategy some in silican valley say is needed ne diversifying start ups. a new initiative is getting support in the valley an example of bidding a better bay area by addressing race and social justice issues. abc 7 news reporter david louis is telling us why supporting historically black colleges could be critical. >> reporter: they're known as historically black colleges. 107 hbcus in all. only one is in california. the rest are in the east and south. these schools could be critical to provide talent francisco venture capitalist elliot robinson. >> it's incredibly talented we just haven't built the pipeline. >> reporter: former 49er jerry race after anthony anderson and

michael strayhan. they also produce african-americans earning living from science and math. a $2 million commitment has been made. >> i think it's going to spawn a whole generation of african- american families that i'm really, really excited about. >> reporter: they can't find qualified applicants is questionable. >> that's not true. it's where are they looking? there are qualified students out there. so i feel that this investment is going to just increase the number of qualified students. >> reporter:

to our north. a trough is passing through. the same trough that brought us windy conditions. with temperatures struggling to get out of the low 70s in our warmest inland valleys today. producing thunderstorms as you will notice to our north. that risk is going to be there possibly a slight possibility around lake county this evening before the sun goes down. here's a view from our golden gate bridge camera. you can see the flag is blowing in the wind. it is 63 in oakland. mid-60s morgan hill. san jose. santa cruz camera pretty view. but a little too chilly for my taste. here's your temperature 66 in santa rosa. 71 fairfield, 63 livermorement and from our sutro camera we're seeing winds blowing in. crisp tomorrow morning with a patchy low fog. the sierra south of tahoe will see some snow showers as we go into later on tonight and then tomorrow. mix of patchy low clouds and higher clouds here for the bay area. temperatures will be in the 40s

and 50s it will be crisp enough to where you will need to grab that jacket when you get going tomorrow. tomorrow afternoon you're looking at 61 in the city. all the way to 77 in fairfield. a breezy pattern once again. with a mix of sun and clouds. now let me show you what's going to happen as that trough moves in another one moves in. friday night that system is in the pacific northwest could come down as far south as sonoma county. slight possibility of a couple of rain drops but not much more than that. maybe a little drizzle as we go into early next week for the coast. here's a look at the rainfall potential. the system will bring over an inch to seattle and portland. a couple .001 of an inch in san francisco. crisp morning, warmer afternoon. we're looking at a warming trend coming in saturday. with upper 80s and low 60s coast side. heat is on wednesday. look at the mid-90s showing up. s that that is going to be feeling like summer around
