still have to wear a mask while at work? that is under debate at this very moment. good evening. thank you for joining us. you are watching abc7 is at 6:00 life here on abc7, who live and wherever you string. >> we have been wearing masks for more than a year as we try to beat the pandemic. if you are fully vaccinated you will be able to take us off in most places starting next week. the date to circle on your calendar is june 15. that is said as the day california reopens. >> reopening california is a very big deal and that is why we have team coverage on this topic. laura anthony spent today talking with gyms and restaurants to find out what will change next week for customers. we will start with cornell bernard live in the newsroom with workers perspectives. cornell, workplace was under debate even as we speak. they are. cal osha is talking about this issue right now. they are reconsidering mask rules for the workplace.

the controversy says if one person in the workplace is not fully vaccinated everybody has to wear a mask. no decision yet but ward members are questioning what could be allowed. >> you can self attest to being vaccinated or you can show a card for example. there is that level of just being vaccinated and then do there is another level which is if you are a business person and you post a sign unvaccinated persons must wear a face covering, if i am unvaccinated and i put on a face covering you might infer this person must be unvaccinated. top health official dr. mark galli laid out the long- awaited roles for mask wearing for the businesses the choice of three options. customers can self attest they

have been vaccinated. business operator can require a vaccination verification system and the third option would be for everyone to be required to wear a mask. >> those who don't believe it is enough to have that approach they could require individuals who enter a business or frequent and establishment to wear masks. there will be some exceptions. masks will be required indoors at k-12 schools childcare facilities and other settings. there will also be required in healthcare settings presents homeless shelters and during travel. that includes planes, subways, taxis, trains, fairies and transportation hubs. guys this is information from the state is the most information -- most guidance we have received about what life will look like after the june 15th opening date. we will see how it

bit confused by what exactly reopening will look like on june 15. >> i think realistically it will be the honor system. i think it is very onerous for businesses to try to stop someone at the gate and say are you vaccinated or not. >> walgreens has signs up like these in the bay area but in california masking for those unvaccinated will be required not optional even after june 15. what about masking for people seated indoors for hours next to strangers? >> june 15th kind of doesn't mean much. much. much >> the owner of shake well in oakland says he will add a few more tables indoors but otherwise he will take his cues from his customers. in the meantime employees will keep the masks on. >> we have a team are vaccinated. we don't know if our guests are. we are not opening up -- it will not be like what we were before the pandemic.

there will not be the bar. our pace will be >> reporter: late today safeway one of the first big companies to come out and say starting june 15th and its california stores, vaccinated customers will be welcome inside without masks. i can tell you from my travels and discussions today there are very few business owners i talked with who are comfortable with this idea that they would be screening customers are asking them whether they are vaccinated effectively for personal health information as they are coming through the door. it puts everyone in an awkward situation probably. no one wants to play traffic cop i would imagine. business owners i am sure are worried about making -- after all of this time too many changes to quickly, right? >> right. it has been 15 months. different people have different

>> they are two out of the 6900 auto burglaries reported in san francisco this year. that is a 1% decrease from 2020 but they say the problem is getting worse in the central district were car burglaries have more than doubled. >> they parking groups of 4-6 people they are breaking into cars. >> back in the 80s the police department had a patrol bureau task force that at one point had 100 officers dedicated to only focus on car break-ins. that is a luxury they can't afford now struggling with a major staffing shortage. what is being done? >> we are developing a tourism plan to make sure we have enough officers in the areas frequently traveled by

chris nguyen has more from san jose. >> emphasizing the need for conservation to be a way of life, the santa clara valley water district board voted unanimously this afternoon to declare a water shortage emergency to the community to reduce water use by 15% compared to 2019 levels. >> being proactive today can help us for next yearnext yearnr be extraordinarily grim. >> in order to meet the target, officials said the public should cut back on outdoor irrigation. for example, the water district is asking cities and private water companies to whom it provides water to impose limits on how often residents can water their lawns and enforcing other rules to discourage water wasting. >> climate change is real. it is affecting our water supply. >> agencies can also play a role in investing in better infrastructure. >> it is not just about people conserving water in their homes. it is also about water agencies thinking strategically about how to amplify the use of nonconventional water sources
