begin with ike e-joe chi. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, faith and mona. ahead of that high stakes meeting with putin, president biden says he agrees with the russian president on one thing, their contentious relationship. this morning, flags flying at nato headquarters in brussels as president biden arrives for meeting the nato leaders. an attack on one member is an attack on all. the group will debate adding language to article 5 that includes major cyberattacks, a topic of concern ahead of president biden's high stakes one-on-one with russian president vladimir putin. in an interview with nbc, putin agreeing with the leader of the free world on one thing. >> translator: we are a bilateral relationship that has deteriorated. >> i think he's right it's a low point. >> reporter: president biden prepared to come face to face with the man he once said has no soul. putin reacting with laughter.

in that meeting, president biden is expected to press putin about recent cyberattacks that have targeted staples of american life. on the flight to brussels, national security adviser jake sullivan pushing back on the idea that president biden would do a cybercriminal prisoner swap with putin. >> he didn't say prisoner swap. what he was talking about was accountability, and the idea that responsible countries should hold -- should be held accountable to not harboring cybercriminals, and to bringing cybercriminals to justice. >> reporter: that comes as the latest poll shows 49% of americans have a good or great amount of trust in biden to negotiate with putin. overnight, biden wrapping up his g7 trip in england where leaders offered a global plan to fight the pandemic and fight climate change. queen elizabeth joined him for tea at windsor castle.

biden says he hopes to find areas where the u.s. and russia can work together. mona? >> ike, thank you. let's turn now to karen travers in brussels. before we get to vladimir putin, what's at stake? it was pretty much dismissed by former president trump. >> reporter: mona, the president is once again saying america is back. his message today at the nato summit is that the u.s. is committed to this military alliance, something that world leaders are very eager to hear because as you say, president trump threatened to pull the united states out of nato. on the agenda today t climate change, china, russia and afghanistan as the president is pulling all u.s. forces out of afghanistan this fall by the anniversary of the september 11th attacks. nato is also bringing out their forces. so this is a very high stakes meeting. one-day summit, but before that, the president will sit down with the leaders of three baltic

nations, latvia, estonia and lithuania. that is sending a clear message to president putin that the united states has the backs of those countries that are in his backyard. >> karen, looking ahead to president biden's meeting with putin on wednesday. what's your take that putin may be calling for this prisoner swap? >> reporter: it was surprising to see the president say that he agreed with that, that he would do the same, that if there were people doing crimes against russia in the united states, that he was committed to holding them accountable, but it was just a couple of hours later where the national security adviser jake sullivan walked that back, did quite a bit of clean yaup saying, that's not what the president meant. that he wanted to see russia hold cyber criminals accountable, and that's what the united states would like to see. it's notable that the president yesterday said they do agree on one thing, he and vladimir putin, that the u.s./russia relationship is at an all-time low. he said part of this meeting is setting the relationship on a path forward to something a bit more predictable, a little bit

of a nudge there at the former president donald trump of course. this meeting is very high stakes. this meeting is very much being watched. even queen elizabeth yesterday asked the president about vladimir putin, mona. >> all right. kar karen travers in brussels. breaking overnight, a dramatic crash at a texas racetrack has left dozens of people injured. the chaotic moment as the car slammed into the crowd. >> reporter: cameras capturing the horrifying moment sunday night seconds before an offroad vehicle slammed into a crowd of spectators at this racetrack near el paso. the video cutting out seconds before witnesses say the so-called mud truck veered off track, smashing into parked cars and fans. >> they started the rauce, and with they started, one of the trucks lost control and slammed into a pile of cars and people. there was a lot of people hurt.

it was pretty ugly. >> reporter: the video posted to social media showing the chaos after the crash as people in the stands rushed to help. police say 29 people were at least 8 remain in the hospital overnight. and investigators say they don't know why that car veered off the track. another story breaking overnight, terrifying moments for shoppers at this upscale mall in atlanta. investigators say a security guard was held at gunpoint and shot during a robbery attempt at lennox square bhmall. that guard was in critical condition overnight. two suspects were taken into custody. 1 of the 14 victims in a mass shooting in downtown austin, texas this weekend has died. 25-year-old douglas candtor was visiting from new york. police say the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the suspect, and most of the victims were innocent bystanders. a major battle over whether

companies can mandate covid vaccines in the workplace. sued over the vaccination requirement, and now a federal judge has rejected the lawsuit calling it frivolous and saying the workers can find jobs elsewhere. an attorney says they will appeal. today marks since months since the first covid vaccine dose was you given here in the united states, but vaccine rates have slowed dramatically. the u.s. is on pace to fall short of president biden's goal of getting 70% of americans at least partially vaccinate by july 4 point. the delta variant is growing and becoming dominant in the u.s. the variant confirmed in india has more severe symptoms earlier than other variants. >> the data approximately out of 40,000 cases, those who had the delta variant were twice as likely to be admitted to the hospital, but the good news is out of the university of texas last thursday, we have data show that the vaccines that we have are indeed effective against the

delta variant. >> meanwhile today, the u.s. is expected to surpass 600,000 covid deaths. fire crews working in extreme heat are fighting a brush fire in the mountains of southern california. the flames forcing evacuations, destroying at least two homes there. one firefighter was injured. meanwhile at least six wildfires are burning in utah including one spreading more than 10,000 acres. all right. let's take a closer look at your monday forecast. that extreme heat we mentioned will affect around 40 million people across six states. excessive heat warnings are posted there, and could remain in place all week. a record high of 106 degrees is expected tomorrow in billings, montana and salt lake city. the readings as high as 120 degrees are polissible elsewher and the peak isn't expected until thursday. checking today's highs in other parts of the country, around 70

>> reporter: this morning, hollywood has lost one of its most prolific supporting actors. >> the world is a business. >> reporter: ned beatty spent half a century appearing in some of the industry's most iconic movies with credits in more than 150 films, tv shows and theatrical performances. his career began in 1972 as the happy go lucky member in "deliverance." >> well, hell, i guess this river comes out somewhere, don't it? >> reporter: in a 1977 interview with "good morning america," beatty spoke about that pivotal role. >> quite honestly we did get evicted, but i think it was because i was making money and the owner wanted me to buy the property. he happened to see my face hanging out on the tubes. >> reporter: beatty then received an oscar nomination for his role in the 1976 movie "network." his three-minute monologue as a corporate executive ranking among the greatest in movie history. >> and you have meddled with the primal forces of major.

and you will atone. >> reporter: beatty's other movie credits include "all the president's men," "nashville," "the big easy," and "superman." in a 1977 interview with "the new york times," he explained why he preferred being a supporting actor saying he enjoyed throwing curveballs. >> i don't feel typecast, and, i think, you know, that's unusual in our business. i have been lucky. i've gotten to play different things. i keep coming back because of the people. it's really not the work. it's really not the fact that people see your face. i could hide this face for a week. it wouldn't bother me. it's the people. i keep coming back because -- to be with other actors. >> reporter: beatty died of natural causes. he is survived by his wife whom he married in 1999. he has eight children from three previous marriages. he was 83. mona, faith? >> megan, thank you. new evidence this morning of the challenges of the
