danger. a lot of 80s and 90s out there. remember those breezes that kept us comfortable yesterday? they're gone except for near the coast. that's why we're in the 60s and 70s into san francisco. 80s around the bay. 90s and 100s inland. this is just day one. with the higher temperatures mike is tells us about expected today, there also comes a higher risk of wildfires. >> a woman is in the hospital after a fast moving grass fire damaged her home and at least a half dozen more in her neighborhood. amy hollyfield joins us live where investigators are going to be out there again this morning. amy. >> reporter: hi there. the front of the homes look okay. take a closer look at the damage on the side of the homes. and in the back. that's because the fire started on a hillside behind the homes on skyline drive. let's get to the video from yesterday we were able to get the vantage point of where this fire started back in the back.

an elderly woman who lives in this home was taken to the hospital. she was suffering from smoke inhalation. no other injuries were reported. the fire started between 5:00 and 5:30 they got the call yesterday afternoon that a neighborhood was being threatened. this is near six flak flags. it started in a hillside behind homes on skyline drive. the fire spread to about eight homes. three of those have significant damage. some neighbors grabbed their garden hoses and their tools and did what they could to try to save the homes. >> my husband ran across the street to her house and got up on the roof and started watering. mythus did really well. he saved their house. the flames were coming up in the yard. >> reporter: firefighters don't know the cause of the fire. residents have been concerned about the dry brush behind their homes and today the heat

wave starts. one advantage we have today, we aren't expecting to see the wind that they had yesterday that really helped push this fire along. but it will be a dry, hot day so we are all being told to be on alert today. live in vallejo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. pg&e is warning customers to be prepared for possible power outages during this heat wave. the utility company says it has no plans for a public safety power shutoff but it's telling customers to get ready in it case the power grid fails. pg&e says to have flashlights, radios and fresh batteries ready. they're warning you not to use candles because they pose another fire threat. conditions will only get more difficult for firefighters over the next few days. the national weather service tweeted this morning saying dangerous and life threatening heat is about to grip the bay area. and speaking of that, abc 7 news has a new feature to help you stay on top of our rising

president putin that there are areas where we can cooperate, if he chooses. >> topics during their talks will include putin's election meddling, human rights and cyber attacks including one that threatened to disrupt the u.s. meat supply and another that triggered gas shortages and price hikes. following the meeting both men will hold separate news conferences. abc news plans to air a special report this when that happens. >> thank you. cities all over the state celebrating california's reopening. we're seeing things we haven't seen in a long time. last night san francisco mayor london breed attended a public reception, no mask. >> when i think about what we had to do to beat back this virus and where we are now, it's incredible. i'm looking forward to a fun and exciting summer. >> mayor breed brought her reopening excitement to a vip

reception. it features black films that reinforce positive images. that event runs tomorrow through sunday. navigating this transition may take some time. business managers in san jose and campbell, as well as religious centers like ever green islamic center are re- examining operations now that california has reopened. >> one of the big changes that we're going to have is now we're allowed to serve food at the gaming tables again and for a lot of players they come in, they want a snack. they weren't allowed to eat at the table. >> we're going to go ahead and open up all of our rows. right now we have every other row. we're still going to provide a seat buffer to the left and right. so there'll still be a little bit of social distancing going on even though it's not required. >> one of the restriction is they have to bring their own prayer mat. we will have some social distancing implemented. it's for them whether they can use it. >> so everybody agrees the biggest change is the dropping

of the mask mandate for fully vaccinated people. if cash prizes and free vacations weren't enough for you to get vaccinated, governor newsom is promising another incentive. he's going to reveal that later this morning. that comes a day after newsom celebrated the state's reopening by giving ten vaccinated californians $1.5 million each. >> 46. the number is 46. from los angeles. >> los angeles. >> from los angeles. >> there's something about this that's hilarious. >> and the music. >> it's the music. it's the universal studios globe spinning in the background. a lot going on. the state is notifying every winner including the single one from the bay area. that person lives in marin county. there are also four winners if in los angeles county and other places you can see on this map.

we're back at 6:11. let's start in san francisco under sunshine. 50 in the sunset. everybody else in the mid to upper 50s. we're seeing that in neighborhoods until you get to places like pittsburgh and tracy. 65. 68. 49 in american canyon. you're lucky. that's not going to happen again any time soon. here's a look, the sun is up which means we're at the coolest part of the day. near 78 to 89 bay and inland. by noon, 84 to 100 at 4:00. notice the 60s at the coast. that localized sea breeze is going to keep you comfortable. stay inside in the air- conditioning if you can. if you're out, dress for the heat and stay on the grass if

you're walking the dog. tree pollen is moderate. uv index is going to be very high. it'll feel 10 to 15 degrees warmer if you are in the sun this afternoon. we are starting off with a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the sun is always in my way around this time. i'm going to have to adjust this camera. starting to back up there just a little bit. we do not have the metering lights on yet. bringing you a live picture from san rafael. everything for the most part is clear and at the limit, including that sig alert we were following. there's just a slow it has cleared. apple's plans to break into the healthcare industry. according to documents obtained by the wall street journal, apple tested its own primary care service in 2016 based off information collected from apple watches. the company even hired doctors

be extradited to california to stand trial. the former hollywood mogul is currently serving 23 years after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault last year. he's expected to be moved to california by mid july where he faces an 11 count indictment on charges that he attacked five women in los angeles between 2004 and 2013. new developments at san francisco's city hall. supervisor offered an emotional apology for his behavior. >> with or without alcohol. with or without stress, i am accountable for my behavior and i am profoundly sorry for and frankly embarrassed by the tenor that i have struck at times in my work. >> he is entering alcohol treatment after accusations he was drunk during a meeting. while we celebrate california's reopening it's remarkable to look back at how far we've come. we talked to santa clara county public health director. 15 months ago she set the pace

for the pandemic response by ordering a shelter in place. >> i imagine that this must be a little bit like what a pilot feels when an engine cuts out or there's a lot of trouble and you have to do your best. you have to make decisions quickly and you have to make them carefully. and you have to land the plane safely. >> do you feel like you landed the plane safely? >> i do. i think it was a very, very bumpy landing. we, you know, the interior of the plane is not as pristine as we might like but i think we have made a safe landing. >> that's an interesting way to put it. santa clara reported the first covid case in the bay area and the first covid death in the u.s. giants take on the arizona diamondbacks again. last night plenty of fans were wearing their masks as they entered the game. face coverings are now only strongly recommended instead of mandatory. capacity limit will be lifted

next friday. disneyland can open at full capacity. temperature checks and physical distancing requirements have been discontinued. for the first time in more than a year people living out of state can enter the parks. fully vaccinated park goers are not required to wear masks or to social distance. >> we're super excited just because of the heat to not have to wear a mask. to drink our water in line. like that was huge yesterday when it was so hot was if you were taking your mask down to drink water they were like nope you have to go to a designated area. >> when it's hot and you're wearing a mask it's kind of -- it's a lot better. >> look at our friends. >> look at them. >> all right. disneyland still has its reservation system in this place though and as you know disney is the parent company of abc 7. >> i know i just went but i'd like to go back again. >> you want the full capacity experience. >> i do. and i want the masks off. it wasn't so bad, but it also was really great temperature wise when we were there.

control after hitting wires that were attached to the roof for tv cameras. he struggled to avoid crashing into spectators, somehow managed to land on the field then got arrested by security. greenpeace has apologized for the stunt. there's been a twist in the a's effort to build a new waterfront ballpark. the alameda board of supervisors held a special meeting. the county has been asked to join in that project. the city of oakland requested the county sign on to help with the infrastructure around howard terminal. it's estimated that part of the project could cost up to $1 billion. things got tense as members of the board questioned their involvement while the a's president used a baseball phrase to emphasize that this could be it. >> so i just want -- i don't want people to miss that one piece. you said we took a major haircut. we did. now once again we're being dragged back into this whole thing. relative to sports.

>> yes, supervisor, we are really down to our last at-bat and it's at howard terminal. it really is howard terminal or bust. >> the county has until the end of the month to decide if it's going to be part of this deal. oakland city council is going to vote on the howard terminal proposal july 20th. our masks were a symbol of responsibility, caring about our own health and other people's health. now the vaccinated people can go maskless. and some people are continuing to -- excuse me. continuing to wear the masks. is it a sign of vulnerability? is it a sign of paranoia? >> abc 7 news spoke with an expert about this big social and psychological change. he said that we will likely see a heightened level of anxiety and that's because this is a really big change and what's been our norm for 15 months and it could really be unsettling for some people, especially in certain situations. >> i think especially in the early part of this transition into nonmask wearing, there is going to be some trust issues

this morning. get ready for a scorcher. i'm tracking a heat wave bringing triple digits to parts of the bay area. repair or replace? you may be in for sticker shock if you're trying to get a car right now. we'll explain why prices are skyrocketing. good morning. it's wednesday, june 16th. you're watching abc 7 mornings live on abc 7, hulu live or wherever you stream. we're checking in with mike. it's going to be hot. >> air conditioner working. check. in house and in car. it's going to be a day with a moderate risk of heat illness and all these areas you see in orange as our temperatures soar from 11:00 this morning all the way through 9:00 friday. in the afternoons they'll reach 94 to 102 degrees. high risk of heat illness from 98 degrees to 108 degrees from 11 thursday morning to 9:00 friday. here's a look at the breeze. there isn't one except for near the ocean. that's why you'll be in the

mid60s to mid70s into san francisco while everybody else in the 80s to even near 100 inland. >> thank you. a scary reminder what can happen when we have hot weather, dry conditions and wind. >> firefighters still monitoring the area this morning. abc news reporter amy hollyfield joining us live. good morning. >> reporter: the homes are still standing and the front of the homes look okay. take a closer look. the damage is on the side and in the backs of the homes. eight homes damaged here. it is cool here this morning and it's calm but they do have a team of firefighters stationed in this neighborhood just in case watching over the area as the heat wave is expected to start today. one woman was taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon. her home was the most damaged and she suffered from smoke inhalation.

she's expected to be okay. eight homes were damaged. the fire burned the backs of the homes. backyards and patios. it creeped up from a hillside behind the homes. residents jumped into action to try to stop the fire. >> the fire was coming from the west. the wind was blowing it towards the east. it was kind of swirling. so it was coming up and over the railing of the house. i grabbed the water hose and and started wetting everything down. >> reporter: the fire started just after 5:00 yesterday. firefighters evacuated some homes. they got the fire out and the situation controlled by about 7:15. firefighters don't know what started it. they're looking for a cause. they're expected to be back out here this morning to start their investigation. there is a heightened threat of fire today as that heat wave starts. we do have one advantage today over yesterday, we aren't expecting to see the wind they

the woods. >> governor newsom says california is the only state to see a week or week increase for vaccinations. that starts at 9:00 this morning. san francisco mayor london breed will testify before congress about a program that could help communities build back after the pandemic. she'll speak to a house subcommittee about the community development block grant program. yesterday the mayor celebrated the state and city's reopening. >> can you believe that we're at a point where the sun is shining bright in san francisco and when we talked about being out of the woods during this pandemic, we're out of the woods right now. [ applause ] >> look at these smiling faces. out in the sun. this was at the historic cable car turn around. the mayor revealed the cable cars are going to return sooner than expected. they're going to start running in august and they'll be free for everyone for the whole month. san francisco originally planned to bring the cable cars back in the fall.

the mayor is hoping moving up this timeline will encourage visitors to come back to the city all summer long. new incentive program aimed at teens begins today. it's a concert ticket raffle for shows at sap center. anyone who gets vaccinated at one of the county's fixed location sites will be entered. already vaccinated? you can enter by bringing a friend or a family member to get the shot. as states begin to celebrate reopening, there are new warnings about a covid-19 variant spreading fast across the u.s. jobina is at the live desk with what we need to know this morning. >> thank you. the cdc has officially declared the delta variant, a variant of concern. this mutation of covid-19 was first detected in india. it is more contagious. vaccines do appear to be effective against it. still doctors say it is important to monitor how the variant spreads among children under 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine yet. >> it's likely going to be the

dominant variant in just a few short months. parents and their children should continue to follow the cdc guidelines and their own local public health department guidelines. >> meantime new york state is celebrating a covid milestone. more than 70% of adults have received at least one dose. fireworks lit up the sky across the state and overnight more than a dozen landmarks were lit in blue and gold. in washington plans are underway for a fourth of july celebration, including the return of the national mall fireworks show. at the white house president biden will host more than 1000 guests to honor first responders and service members. >> thank you. abc 7 news is continuing to monitor the covid vaccine numbers in california with our vaccine tracker. you can find it on our home page. in the east bay outdoor dine willing remain through january 3rd. the town council just approved the extension and will work out details next month. in december some danville

restaurants were defiant when contra costa county halted outdoor dining during the pandemic. san francisco sheriff paid a visit to chinatown to celebrate the reopening. he posed for photos with tourists and talked with shop owners. his tour was about much more than a meet and greet. >> i think it's important to focus on two things. one is not just the resiliency and bringing business back to the community. also because of all the recent challenges we've had with a focus on aapi. >> chinatown business leaders asked for a stronger police presence because of anti-aapi incidents. a san francisco initiative to provide safe spaces for members of the asian american pacific islander community is expanding. solidarity sf started in march. some 20 businesses signed up if electricity effort organized by a coalition of community groups and business and city leaders. now those groups have announced the program is expanding

after a cease fire in may, israel has carried out an air strike over gaza. jobina with this developing news. >> thank you. the israeli military says it targeted compounds belonging to hamas. the militant controls gaza. this was the scene overnight. israel says the air strike was launched after palestinians launched incendiary balloons which sparked 20 fires in it southern israel. hamas says it was done in response to a march by israeli nationalists in occupied east jerusalem. there were no death threats on either side and things will now
