plus, the deep discounts rolling out as stores compete with amazon's prime day. one retailer even calling their sales black friday-like. and from the couple that's been chained together since valentine's day, to nik wallenda's next high-wire walk, to big news for diana ross fans. ♪ i'm coming up, got to let it show ♪ >> all the trending stories this friday morning. >> from abc news in new york, this is "america this morning." >> and good friday morning, everyone. i'm andrew deemberg. >> we begin with the deadly shooting rampage in arizona. police near phoenix say man drove to eight different locations, randomly shooting at people on streets and along highways. >> when it was over, 12 people were injured and one person was killed. now investigators are trying to figure out what led to this

shooting spree. >> reporter: this morning, a massive investigation under way in the wake of a shooting spree that left at least a dozen people injured and one man dead. >> we don't know what the motive was. we don't have an idea of what this person was thinking when he went out and did this. >> reporter: the first shooting was reported just before noon on thorough. the suspect allegedly opening fire on a car. then two more victims were shot by a person, also driving a white suv. >> there was a very good description given of the people, the vehicle, the license plate and what not. tht helped us to be able to track that person down. we don't believe there is anyone else involved. >> reporter: over the next 45 minutes, at least eight shootings were reported across three cities. >> we have a total of 13 people who are injured. four people who were shot. >> reporter: one of the victims shot and killed while driving on the freeway. officials say the break in the case came when the local fire department spotted the white suv and called for backup. police cornering the suspect an

hour and a half after the initial shooting. officers say they found at least one gun in the suv during the arrest. now the fbi and the atf are joining the investigation. federal agents working to identify any weapons used in the spree and find out where the shooter got them. the suspect's name wasn't immediately released, and authorities believe he acted alone. now to the other major story we're following, the tropical threat along the gulf coast. a tropical storm warning is in effect from louisiana to florida. the storm is expected to start dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas, beginning tonight. and it will be another scorching di across the west and into the plains. several big cities will see temperatures around 115 degrees. crews in montana are battling high temperatures and flames. this wildfire has scorched over 5,000 acres. it could take a month to contain. the affordable care act has survived another challenge in the supreme court. justices voted 7-2 to leave

obamacare intact, with four conservative justices siding with the liberals, including trump appointees amy coney barrett. stephen breyer is facing new calls to retire. live from washington, ike, good morning. >> good morning, andrew. the affordable care act was signed into law 11 years ago by president obama. today the former and current president relive a moment celebrating the supreme court decision. it was supposed to be moment behind the scenes. then vice president biden heard on a hot mic, celebrating president obama's signature achievement, passing the affordable care act. this morning, recalling that moment 11 years ago before an official statement from president biden, this tweet from his potus account. it remains as ever a bfd, and it's here to stay. in the 7-2 decision, the supreme court upholding the law for a third time.

31 million americans are ensured under the aca, an all-time high. the law also protects 54 million with preexisting conditions. president obama writing this ruling reaffirms what we have long known to be true. the affordable care act is here to stay. the conservative leaning court ruling the plaintiffs, texas, and 17 other republican-led states who objected to the mandate requiring insurance had not suffered any injury that would give them standing to sue because there is no longer a penalty for not having insurance. justice stephen breyer declaring they have failed to show they have standing to attack as unconstitutional, the act's minimum essential coverage provision. the recent comments from mitch mcconnell are pointing to another court battle. mcconnell threatening to potentially block a biden supreme court nominee in 2023 and 2024 if republicans win back the senate. now a new push from some progressive democrats for liberal justice stephen breyer,

the oldest serving justice on the court to step down. this morning, 18 legal scholars publishing a full page ad in "the new york times," calling breyer a remarkable jurist, but saying it's best for the country if he steps down. now no one can force a sitting justice to step down. justce breyer is showing no indication he is ready to go. andrew? >> ike, thank you. now to a desperate search on a river in north carolina following a tragic tubing trip. the group went missing on wednesday after going over a dam. this morning rescue peoples are scouring a river in north carolina for the second day after a deadly tubing accident. >> tubers went over the dam. five tubers went over the dam. >> reporter: according to police, nine people were floating on the dan river near the virginia border on wednesday night when they went over a dam. >> it's a pretty steep drop from the river over the dam there.

and it's dangerous, obviously. >> reporter: four survivors were found by construction workers 18 hours later, clinging to whatever they could find. >> four were located. they were hanging on to various items there, and we were able to get the swift water rescue in to rescue those four individuals. >> reporter: officials then soured a massive stretch of the river looking for the other five people. >> we have done an air and water search. we have an aircraft that have flown the river and we have a two boats on the river at this time. >> reporter: thursday night, a devastating discovery. officials telling abc news three of the tubers were found dead, their bodies recovered three miles away from where they were last seen. official says they still consider this a rescue operation, and they hope to find the others. iranians are heading to the polls today to pick their next president. the election is being held amid international efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by former president trump.

abc's martha raddatz is in tehran with more on the front-runner who is sanctioned by the u.s. >> reporter: it is almost a certainty that a hard line cleric named raisi will be elected. there were enthusiastic rallies for him this week, but the majority of iranians say they won't vote because moderate candidates were disqualified from the race. raeisi does support the nuclear deal that biden is trying to revive, but if he is reelected, it could make it more difficult to get a tougher and longer deal which could slow everything down. meanwhile, the u.s. and russia both agree that iran should not have a nuclear weapon. the nation is marking the first federal observance of juneteenth. yesterday president bush signed the bill creating the holiday joined by 94-year-old opal lee, who pushed for the measure. most federal workers will have the day off, though there will

be mail delivery. a number of states are giving public workers the day off. and time now for a closer look at your friday morning weather. >> a tropical system making its way towards the central gulf coast. west of new orleans is when landfall is expected late friday night into early saturday morning. it's going to bring a lot of rain to the coast, especially 8 to 12 inches from mobile to new orleans with 20 inches of rain. the worst of the impacts along the louisiana coast into the western florida panhandle into the upcoming weekend. and the heat is on in the west. triple-digit heat for many of us. i'm accuweather meteorologist kevin koskrin. coming up, the change that's coming to some of your money. >> also, ahead, new details in the road rage shooting that killed a 6-year-old in california. what prosecutors say the suspected gunmen already admitted to hours before his court appearance today.

would rise when i gave the word ♪ >> we're back with coldplay in new york city last night. the band held a show for vaccinated fans celebrating new york's covid reopening. a california man charged with killing a 6-year-old boy in a road rage incident will be arraigned today. court documents say marcus eriz and his girlfriend hid their car after aiden leos was fatally shot in a booster seat as his mother drove him to school. according to prosecutors eriz admitted to firing his gun and he changed his appearance by shaving his beard. days after aiden was killed he pulled a gun on another driver. now to close encounters with bears. a woman in alaska is detailing her ordeal following an incident that was way too close for comfort. andrea fujii reports. >> reporter: this morning an alaskan hiker found alive after she was traced by grizzly bears and got lost in the woods is telling her story. >> while he was charging me, i

was saying to god, is this the way i'm going to die? >> reporter: fina kiefer's husband called 911 tuesday to say his wife needed help after she went hiking on a trail outside anchorage. >> i had to stand my guard while this bear was charging me. so i grabbed my pepper spray out of my side. and then i said hey! and then he stopped his charge about 20 feet. >> reporter: authorities say the 55-year-old used bear spray she brought with her to fend off the animals, but had already been chased off the trail and couldn't find her way back. kiefer then stopped responding to calls or texts. that's when rescue crews began their search. state troopers and the alaska national guard all helping out. kiefer told rescuers she heard search helicopters overhead, but they couldn't see her. >> i stayed up. i had to stay up. i was getting cold. and then the helicopters were searching me on the other side

of the mountain. > reporter: despite difficult conditions, kiefer managed to stay alive with help from waterproof matches. >> she was actually able to build a fire, a small fire, which unfortunately we didn't see. but she was able to keep herself warm and sustain herself through the night. so obviously a very strong well prepared, capable person. >> reporter: bad weather forced crews to stop searching wednesday afternoon, but not long after, kiefer emerged from the trail on her own and flagged down a search volunteer. experts say there is more bear activity now as they recently came out of hibernation. residents in a new hampshire town told not to leave food in their cars after multiple reports of the animals breaking into vehicles. one bear caught on video trying to open the door of a parked car. as for kiefer, she was taken to the hospital for injuries she suffered when she fell hiking down the mountain. andrew, deirdra? >> andrea, thank you. now in sports, not all records are meant to be broken. the arizona diamondbacks have set an unwanted baseball record
