moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc7 news. now that juneteenth is a national holiday, celebrations are getting underway in the weigh bay area. and speaking of celebrating, no more tears, the south bay shows up to mark california's reopening. p you are watching abc7 news live on ab7 hulu live and wherever you stream. i am jobina fortson and we will start with a look at the hot weather and francis is here to break it down for us. good morning.

>> good morning. yeah, another hot day, but temperatures are going to be about 5 to 10 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. and here's why. we have some fog returning to the forecast. you can see a little bit of it here with live doppler 7 and satellite radar image along the peninsula coast. temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s, san francisco 55, and fairfield 65, and san jose 63 degrees. live shot from the east bay hills shows some of the fog starting to spill in through parts of the bay. and inland temperatures at 9:00 already in the 70s around the bay. mid-be 60s at the coast and mid- 50s so it will be cool at the beaches, but still hot inland. temperatures reaching to near 100 degrees for some locations around the bay more comfortable in the low 80s, and at the baches, some upper 50s to low 60s. sun sets at 8:34 and it's another spare the air da but the cooling trend continues and i will tell you more about that with the accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. >> thank you. and the south bay scorching temperatures didn't stop people from celebrating the end of the

temperatures any time. our live temperature tracker is in the weather section of the abc7 bay area connected t-v apps wherever you stream. a wild fire near big sur has burned more than 2000 acres. the willow fire broke out around 8:00 p.m. last night, and the u.s. forest service says there is no containment. 300 for fighters are on the front lines. nearby residents have been scrambling to pack up and leave. >> you get your valuables together and clothes together, and get your animals together. and that's pretty much all you worry about. >> and take look at this map. it shows the evacuation orders in red and warnings in the yellow. the monterey county sheriff has issued mandatory evacuations for the center, china camp and other surrounding camp grounds. in the wake of last month'sed itly mass the vta declared an official

emergency to speed up process to fix the damage at the facility in san jose. that will get the light rail system up and running much sooner. service has been halted since the shooting on may 26th. during the special meeting yesterday, we learned just how vital building is to operations. >> the guadalupe area is the source of all of our mechanical, and control and support for the light rail system. if you think of it in terms of a airport control tower, that's a pretty good approximation. >> the emergency declaration also increases the amount of money that can be spent. all week long, here on abc7, we have been celebrating juneteenth. today is the official day, and san francisco has kicked things off in a big way. a new skullppture has been unveiled at the base of a toppled statue in golden gate park. kate larsen has the story. >> reporter: the artist.

>> african descendents,. >> reporter: the poet. >> my mother remembers africa, lord, she killed on behalf of you. >> reporter: and the politician. >> my grandmother who was not far removed from slavery worked as a sharecropper with her family. >> reporter: all reflected on juneteenth eve about the past and present in san francisco's golden gate park for the unveiling of an art installation. each black statue represents one african ancestor stolen from the homeland and sold into slavery. >> i think what it is doing for me is addressing the truth. >> reporter: last year on juneteenth, a group toppled the statue with francis scott key that stood there for more than a century. the truth is, key, was a slave owner. >> to see this moment in history, which started with george floyd, and all the protests, this seems like a change is going to happen.

in the south bay, santa clara county employees had yesterday off since county made juneteenth a holiday last year. that vote was in september after a summer of social justice protests. the county is now serving as model to others. >> cities across the country reached out to get our policy because they wanted to do the same thing. >> i saw online somebody said we didn't ask for juneteenth. yes we did. we have been asking for it for long time and now we are here, happy juneteenth. >> happy juneteenth. the african american community service agency will 40th annual celebration a. they food, music and art and vaccinations. we are going to check in with francis here, because it's a little less hot, and she says, but i don't know. francis, i was so hot yesterday. >> yes, and yesterday it was melting as well. it's going to be a hot day, but not as hot as it was yesterday

our website, abc7 news.com. our workplace changed during the pandemic. tracking those changes is one pillor of our effort to build a better bay area. given the experiences of some employees who have worked remotely the whole time, there's no going back to the way it was. abc7 news reporter lyanne millen dez has the story. >> i am never going back to the office. >> reporter: it's what many workers are thinking, but few will have that option. before the pandemic, working completely from home was an outliar activity with only two% of the country engaged in it. but now many companies are ready to meet somewhere in the middle. according to nicholas bloom, who surveyed more than 30,000 workers. >> working from home is work really well in the pandemic. so firms like if it ain't hurt don't fix it but we want you back three days a week not five. >> reporter: remember in 2013, the then ceo of yahoo marisa meyer, sent a memo to employees

some resentment among employees. bloom says there's something managers can do. >> for example, a 5% pay increase for people that can't work from home and make good package. >> reporter: remember that, the next time you ask for that raise. lyanne melendez, abc7 news. millions of americans along the gulf coast are bracing for severe weather today. forecasters are predicting dangerous storm surge and flooding as tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect across four states. alabama has closed all coastal beaches to swimmers, but louisiana is expected to be in the bull's eye. that state declaring a state of emergency. as it is reeling from severe flooding in recent weeks on top of that, home and business owners are still trying to recover from the past hurricane season when louisiana was hit by five record storms. and now we are going to check in with francis, because our accuweather forecast is much different from that. >> yeah, definitely much different. we are dealing with the heat, but we are getting some relief

in the form of fog. and i will hoe you that with live doppler 7. you see some of the coastal clouds there along the peninsula. and it's going to make et cetera way into parts of the bay. a live shot from sutro tower shows hazy conditions and the fog coming into san francisco right now. where it is 5 # degrees. oakland and mountainview 57. morgue abhill 56, and half moon bay, 54 degrees. and this time, we are looking from mount tam. i think we are looking towards sutro and you see the fog rolling in from the baches. so temperatures are cooler this morning in some spots. santa rosa, novato, and napa in the 50s, and fairfield, concord and livermore in the 60s. that fog at the golden gate bridge is a welcomed sight. because you can see the onshore flow is going to cool things down. so the cooling spread from the beaches to the bay, and even a little bit inland. but it's going to be hot there today. temperatures reaching triple digits once again, just not as hot as yesterday.

but the risk of heat illnesses continue and cooler for everybody for father's day tomorrow. and it's also the official start of summer. so, we still have dangerous heat. and advisory for the areas in orange from noon to 10:00 p.m. tonight, and then parts of solano county, fairfield and clear lake, there's an excessive heat warning until 9:00 p.m. tonight. the risk of heat illnesses continue. be careful if you want to not stay outdoors in some of the areas. live shot here in san jose, shows clear skies that's a spare of air alert today. but tomorrow, it should be gone as an son shore flow pushes through and we will have better air quality for tomorrow and today inland east bay and santa clara valley is expected to have poor air quality. highs today, still quite warm in san show say, 90, but check out santa cruz, 74 and at the beaches, with that fog, temperatures only in the 60s half moon bay 63, and palo alto 84 degrees. downtown san francisco cooler

as well. 68. 64, in the sunset district. and north bay more comfortable mid-80s to low 90s. petaluma 87. and triple digits in cloverdale and lakeport as well. mid-70s for oakland. plenty of sunshine there. mid-80s through newark and fremont, and look for temperatures to come down. livermore, yesterday it was 106, today, it will be at 96 degrees. and 100 at antioch and brentwood. you can on the windows tonight with the fog and onshore flow. overnight lows into the 50s this evening. and only one spot hanging onto 61 in antioch. here's the accuweather, seven- day forecast, the heat risk lingers today, especially for those inland areas near 100 around the bay. really comfortable and mild. some low 80s for you at the coast. and that's where things cool down. so summer and cooler tomorrow

-- summer starts tomorrow and it's cooler for everyone for father's day. the cool trend continues into tuesday where we will be below average and then things start to warm up again into next weekend. jobina. >> okay. i mean, i will take it. thank you, francis. well a group of american catholic like bishops drafted a document barring communion for public oofficials who support abortion rights. that includes president biden. we spoke with san francisco's archbishop who says the move is not political. here's abc7 news anchor dan ashley. >> reporter: the document would create a formal policy for who can receive the sacrament of communion. it will be voted on in november. the san francisco archbishop says the ruling is not political. instead, a moral imperative to protect sanctity of the holy communion. >> we are trying to explain our faith and defend it. and try to guide our catholics all catholics, including those in public life, to understand

these basic principles. >> reporter: the archbishop says if the doctrine passes it would be up to the local bishops to enforce it, even in the case of the president. if that happens, it would not be the first time biden would be denied communion. a south carolina priest did so while biden was campaigning for president back in 2019. when asked during a news conference, president biden said, he doubts anything will change. >> the catholic bishops are moving on this resolution that would prevent you and others who have supported abortion from receiving communion. are you concerned about the rift in the catholic church and how to you feel personally about that? >> that's a private matter, and i don't think that will happen. >> that was dan ashley reporting. earlier the vatican advice the u.s. conference of catholic bishops the vote would create discord instead of unity. as we celebrate juneteenth, how about mixing in music a

culture and all of the things, and just sort of putting our own spin on it. >> young teens, the idea of liberation, and the idea that we get to present a part of our culture, a part of our art, and a part of our joy through this celebration of juneteenth and remembering all that our ancestors had gone through, and all the country has done to try to suppress and oppress our joy to have a concert in space that is prioritizing the art, and the joy and culture and traditions of black communities, and to be be around plants, and life i think that's kind of the niche and then juneteenth, that's just like -- that is more than what jamaican i could have asked for. that's actually why from concept for us thinking of when we were going to do this to juneteenth this saturday we have been work on this three weeks. >> we will have the inperson event at the greenhouse and having a watch party and we will be live streaming the concert at 7th west as well.

so those things will happen simultaneously. so we are so excite. we have headliners and we have got bodia and jane hancock and we have the way oakland local home grown folks, and we will take the night away. we, put so much of our love and energy and everything into this, and the way that oakland and like the community rallied around us, for this event and for everything we have done since we opened, you know, it's really what keeps us going and let us know we are headed in the right direction, like, we are doing it right. so it's going to be a quarterly series. and this is the very first, but it will not be the last. and we can't wait to see what it grows and evolves into. >> love seeing their work. it was made possible from a number of community partners and we have more information on that available on our website

compared to yesterday. live look at live doppler 7 shows you the satellite radar image. some fog is moving in. temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s. san francisco 55. but san jose is 63 degrees. as we look towards walnut creek, here's the day planner for today. coastal fog means things at the coast will be cooler by 9:00 this morning, inland numbers in the low 70s around the bay, mid- 60s and mid-50s at the coast. so cool at beaches today because of that fog. but temperatures will still be hot inland. near 100 for some locations around the bay. and low 80s and at the coast, some upper 50s to low 60s. sun sets at 8:34, and it will be cooler overnight as the cooling trend continues through midweek and i will let you know how much cooler it will get. thank you. and in the north bay, damns started to go up at the russian river where business owners and rivers contend with shallow waters. they with built near popular beaches in guerneville. and the goal is to boost water

flow in places where it is dried up like the russian river. >> we were shocked, actually. the fact that i can walk pretty much everywhere in the river is odd. i am. >> the dams goe up every year, but business owners say this year they are more vital than ever. they help keep the water high enough for rented boats and canoes to stay afloat. a drone shows how bad the drought is in california. lake oroville is the second largest reservoir and it is at about 35% of capacity. you can also see the drought's impact in year to year comparison of satellite images from other reservoirs. folsom lake probably the clearest example. san luis reservoir and trinity lake in trinity county also have seen the levels drop substantially. all right. everybody, lake merritt has been the epicenter of summer weekend celebrations in the east bay. with it being juneteenth, they are bracing for big crowds.

they were the early focus of the pandemic. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is at pier 27 with the details. >> we are going back on grand princess in december. the same ship. >> reporter: maureen james from san mateo is making vacation plans on board the very same ship she and her husband were quarantined on back in february 2020. due to a covid-19 outbreak. >> we sailed in circles for several days until they finally found a port for to us dock, in oakland. >> reporter: more than year later, the grand princess and other cruise ships are ready to sail again. some from san francisco pier 27. >> we have bookings that are as robust as prepandemic. so, we will be welcoming our cruise visitors. >> reporter: princess line says ten cruise also sail from san francisco beginning this october. but there are strict guidelines. in statement, company says princess cruises sailings through 2021 are available for guests who receive their final dose of an approved covid-19 at

least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise and have proof of vaccination. th despite protocols and proof of vaccination, last week, two guests aboard the first major cruise since the pandemic began tested positive for covid. it happened on board the celebrity millennium from st. martin. maureen says even after her experience, she is not worried about her next trip. >> after all that, it will me why you want to get back on board? >> you know, he cruised for 40 years. and we love cruising, and i think it's the way to have a very nice relaxing vacation. and not have to pack and unpack and we are schedule for december 5th and trying to make plans for 202 # as well. >> reporter: the return of cruise ships and hungry passengers is what restaurants like nearby pier 23 have been waiting for. >> it's great. i mean, it means we are getting back to normal, and it's going to bray the love people down here. and we look forward to it. >> reporter: the cdc recommends only people who are fully
