>> oh, yeah. yep. >> the rest of us, perhaps, how about bacon-wrapped hot dogs? we'll have more on that later on in the show. >> you had me at bacon. >> that's right. we are following a lot of news, starting this morning with the tropical storm affecting the gulf coast. heavy rain and winds pounding the coastline overnight. louisiana's governor declaring a state of emergency ahead of the storm as the state recently was ravaged by flooding, now is bracing for more. >> tropical storm claudette forming along the u.s. gulf coast. rob marson owe is here talking about it. >> it formed coming on shore late last night, now abreast of new orleans, 45-mile-per-hour winds. you can see the messy, heavy weather is well to the east. where it is raining, it is raining heavily and blowing hard, as well. we've had gusts of 50, 60 miles a hour. flash flood warnings posted through mobile. flash flood watches through the weekend through atlanta. a tornado watch out until at

least 11:00, as this thing kind of spins its way on shore. mobile getting it right now. we'll see heavy rain, maybe 2 inches per hour at times. the track of this brings it through atlanta and into the carolinas. by then, it'll be a weak windstorm, but it'll continue to be a rainmaker. storm surge, east of new orleans, 2 to 3 feet of storm surge. the rain is really going to be the big issue here. 5, 6 inches. maybe a foot of rain in some spots, and this is saturated here. all the storms that went through the midwest overnight, 114 storm reports, we do have over 100,000 people without power today from eastern colorado all the way through louisville, and a pocket across pennsylvania. we'll see more on the way of rough storms. eva, back over to you. >> it's been a busy day in the weather department. thanks, rob. now to the pandemic and the push to get shots into more american arms. 149 million americans are vaccinated. that's almost 45 pktd of the total population. while the president is celebrating a new milestone in doses administered, his administration may fall short of a key goal. abc's trevor ault is at new york's javits center with the

latest. good morning again, trevor. >> reporter: good morning again, eva. the biden administration reflected on how far we've come on friday, but it was not lost on the president that there is still work to be done. the daily death toll here in the united states has fallen 90% from its peak. it's proof the vaccines are working, but we're still losing almost 300 americans to covid-19 every day. this morning, the highly transmissible delta variant drawing considerable concern from top officials, including president biden. >> it is a variant that's more easily transmissible, potentially deadlier, and particularly dangerous for young people. >> reporter: the president announcing 300 million vaccine doses administered in the 150 days since he took office. 65% of adults getting at least one dose, but the nation on track to miss biden's goal of 70% by the fourth of july, leaving an open window for the virus and the variant to stick around. >> any place with vaccine rates probably below 70% or 80% are going to see this variant take

over. >> reporter: steve edwards says missouri hospitals has seen covid admissions skyrocket. the state is one of seven whose seven-day case average climbed 30% or more over the past few have, all have vaccination rates below the national average. outbreaks are bubbling up across many parts of the country. late friday, this administrative building in manatee county, florida, abruptly closed because of at least five staffers getting infected, two of them dying. in western new york, respiratory therapist celeste winters says she is now treating young people who never thought they'd get sick. >> i am still putting patients on life support machines because they're nonvaccinated and becoming very ill. >> reporter: yes, we are on pace to miss the president's goal of 70% of adults getting at least one dose by the four of july. in a difference of 1% or 2%, it might not seem like that big of a deal, but perhaps more

extra ever, ever, ever, like ever. and she's giving us much more than just the original track. swift writing on instagram, this will be the first time you hear all 30 songs that were meant to go on "red." hey, one of them is even ten minutes long. fans speculating that 10-minute song has to be "all too well," which they have been begging for since swift mentioned it in an interview back in 2012. it drops on november 19. it is available right now for pre-order. remember the renegade dance that was all the rage last year, went viral on tiktok? millions did it including celebrities like lizzo and a-rod joined in. now, the choreographer is getting her own nft, a digital creation which has become a vehicle for many artists. the nft is celebrating black art on this june 19th. she teamed up with jadu for a holographic performance of the renegade dance.

it was made using 106 cameras filming simultaneously. to create a 3-d lifelike image. and that is not the only tiktok dance getting the nft treatment. >> reporter: chambersburg, pennsylvania, is rooted in american history. it was rumored to be a stop on the underground railroad and burned down in 1864 by the confederacy. it is small town america. overwhelmingly republican and mostly white. a place where linda and marvin worthy and their 11-year-old daughter taila call home. was there ever a time you felt unwelcome in chambersburg because of your race? >> i received a phone call once, asking if i was marvin worthy, and that i understand my wife decided to enroll in your service, but i found out you were [ bleep ]. we want to withdraw. i said, excuse me? >> reporter: they turned their personal struggle into action, forming a group called racial reconciliation. >> marvin and i decided that we

were going to start to have conversations about how we can reconcile around the issue of race in our own community. >> reporter: for the next few years, they hosted uncomfortable conversations, mostly with their white neighbors, about what it really means to be an ally. >> it's not enough to be anti-racist. you have to combat it. what do you do in a room full of white people, for example, when language is happening that's offensive to people of color? stand in the gap for people who are absent. that's the real work. >> reporter: and then george floyd was killed. big cities erupted into protests. and to the surprise of some, so did chambersburg. the hands holding the signs of protests here were overwhelmingly white, chanting a phrase that was once unthinkable. >> black lives matter. >> reporter: those uncomfortable conversations paid off when hundreds showed up for a demonstration organized by the worthies last juneteenth. >> we're standing strong, steadfast. >> we've never seen that before

in our community. there was a group of black women in a car that stopped, who had tears rolling down their faces and said, "you can't even imagine what this means to me." >> and that was our linsey davis reporting. a new orleans artist and activist is known for his provocative murals, celebrating black life with loving depictions of family life and people realizing their dreams, also commemorating the heroes of the black community. he joins us now. brandon, thanks so much for being with us. i know that you started your career painting heroes of the black community, then you transitioned to painting the community itself. why did you make that change? >> i don't see a big difference between the two. i think, i mean, obviously, we have those that we celebrate that, and rightfully so, but i think it is important as an artist, to think about the value of who and why i'm communicating to and for. for me, it was a matter of just

saying, you know, everybody is valuable. they exist. they breathe. they live. they dream. i want to honor that. i want to celebrate that. >> let's talk about what you actually paint. what aspects of the black community do you want to depict in your paintings? >> i understand that there's such a wide range of beauty in my community, and i want to reflect that in all the ways it shows itself, whether it's just in the smiles in our faces or the looks of hope or the way we embrace each other. when i think about, you know, the images that i grew up seeing in my family, those are the things that i want to duplicate and share across the world. >> there have been people in the black community who became heros. for example, you painted a bus in new orleans that honored the last two living freedom riders. being remembered and celebrated was enormous for them. what was that like for you, to see their reaction? >> yeah, so it wasn't the last two living freedom riders.

they were two individuals in new orleans that we celebrate that are our elders that were part of the freedom ride movement. for me, a large part of the communication that comes with art is about educating and inspiring others. i think there's so much inspiration in their story and what they went through, what they had to experience just to pass the baton on to us, to experience life in a better way. so we wanted to honor them using the similar buses that they would have got on, we wanted to honor them on the buses. it was an amazing experience to see them see themselves reflected on that bus, to know that it is going to travel around the city, and people have to ask the question, who is that? why is that? hopefully in that answer, they would continue to share their legacy and their story. >> now, in addition to being an artist and an activist, you also mentor young artists. why is that so important to you? >> you know, i'm a product of those who passed it on to me, those who took the time to see the potential that i had to help and instill and guide me.

also, the search for victims following a deadly tubing accident in eden, north carolina. authorities say nine people went over a dam on the dan river this week. at least three people died, four were rescued. they are still searching for two others. authorities say there are warning signs about the dam posted along the river. and listen to this story, guys. a reproduction of leonardo da vinci's mona lisa has sold at auction for close to $3.5 million. the previous owner is said to have spent decades trying to convince people that his painting was the original. the one at the louvre museum was a fake. apparently, people weren't buying that, but they ended up paying big bucks in the end. >> you can just sell it as an nft. >> that's right. >> much safer. >> not the real thing, who would have thought? time now for -- [ air horn ]

this morning, one of his famous recipes, hot dogs wrapped in bacon, oh, yeah, that's right, he is going to show it to us. happy father's day to you, chance. >> thank you very much. thanks for having me on. >> so before we get to the hot dog wrapped in bacon, it's always hot in phoenix, so let's keep it cool with something cold, pico de gallo and guac. show us how to make it. >> you bet. it is already 98 in phoenix, so we're making pico. tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, i keep the seeds in it, with a little bit of cilantro. so we're going to mix that up, give it a go. we're going to take one lime, take a little juice in there. going to do juice of one lime. then we're going to add a little salt, and our pico is done. take a little pinch of salt, give it a go. and then we're going to move over to some basic, basic guacamole. we have an avocado. a little trick there, do a

little slice and a cut. that way, when you want to take it out, it just slides right into the bowl. the same thing here. i'm keeping it simple on this guac. i'm doing lime and salt and avocado, and that is it. no need for anything else. >> yeah, i can taste the lime in here. it's nice. >> give it a smash. there we go. >> okay, so, let's go over to the grill for this famous hot dog. we want to eat the hot dogs. walk us through how to do this. >> you bet. this is my take on a sonoran hot dog. it's a little bit different. it is a bacon-wrapped hot dog with a very unique bun that is bold and big enough to handle all the goodness in it. the key, though, is to wrap this dog in bacon. you have to go to the top, wrap it around, get it to the end, and then use these toothpicks. toothpicks will kind of keep it in. just like i've done right here on about a dozen dogs.

then you slide that on, and then that bacon stays tight right on that dog. it's easy as can be. so this is kind of what i'm doing. the great thing about a sonoran hot dog, you can cook it on a griddle, on a charcoal, a gas grill, or in your house with a skillet. you just need heat. it's easy to make. >> we can hear the dog sizzling. put it together and give us the complete picture here. >> you bet. you bet. so we're going to take a bun. this one looks good. look at that, perfectly toasted. uh-oh, let's not let that fall off. that one looks good right there. i'm going to come over here, slide it in. don't forget to take the toothpicks out. i'm going to start with a little pinto beans. roll it along the top. i'm going to move over and put a little mustard on it.

you stopped talking, so i can't bite it. what do i do? >> go ahead. >> okay, i'll ask another question, then i'm going to bite. meatless meat burgers are all the rage. what can you tell us about them? go, i'm going to bite. >> yeah, so these are plant-based burgers that are designed to mimic beef. they're really rich and really savory. a little gamey. we've learned a lot about these. we did a blind taste test on these, too, and our favorite, the top pick was the impossible burger. when you're cooking these, you really want to think crisp. you want to make a smashburger instead of a thick, pub-style burger, and the more sear, the better. >> all right, tasted this one, too. it's really good. i have to swallow before i can ask you this next question though. >> are you just taking a bite of each? >> yes, i'm trying everything. that's my job. that's what they pay me for. tell us about preparing the vegetables. you put them right on the grill, as i understand it. show us how you do that. >> there are so many ways to cook vegetables on the grill.

one of the things we love, and we have a great recipe for pulled mushroom tacos on epicurious. what we do is, take these and pull them apart. put them in a grill basket, and they'll be smoky and crisp on the grill. they make beautiful tacos. almost like cornitas. you can also put a whole eggplant on the grill just like this. you can put it in the coals. you don't have to wrap it or anything. then it'll get smoky and soft. you can serve it with grilled bread. if you want to do a cauliflower, you have a couple options. if you want to start with a whole cauliflower, which makes a really impressive presentation. start it by microwaving it for a few minutes so it will get tender before you put it on the grill, then it'll look like this when you're done. cook it in wedges to get evenly charred on all sides. >> maggie i think you're great. these are incredible ideas. i love the cauliflower. whit told me it looked like a brain on a plate, so i don't know.
