>> this is the abc7 "spotlight," sponsored by bigelow tea -- tea proudly. ♪ >> good morning, i'm chris casey, and if you're watching this with a hot cup of tea, you're in luck, because i'm sitting across from cindi bigelow of bigelow tea, and she makes the best tea around. cindi, thanks so much for having me here. >> well, thank you, and i'm so excited you said best tea around, because we also think bigelow tea is the best tea around. >> i love it, and i'd love to hear more about kind of the history of bigelow, and i know it's a family business. >> yeah, well, it was actually started by my grandmother, ruth campbell bigelow, which is the official name of the company, rc bigelow. she was actually an interior designer in the city, and when the depression hit, she lost everything. my grandfather lost his job. they found an old colonial recipe, and they gave it to a group of friends to try, and that's where the name came back. it was a source of "constant comment." and this is the recipe. it has never changed. my parents are the only ones
9:56 am
that still make the constant comment mix. >> so, it's a top-secret recipe? >> it is a top secret, and it's something that i'm very proud of, they're very proud of, and it's just, i think, one of the many things that makes bigelow tea a unique story, a unique american story. >> so, you guys have a lot of history, but you're also innovating. what new products do you bring to the market, and kind of what are you seeing now in the tea trends, in the consumer behavior? >> well, i think that really should be divided into two. first is what i would call the products that people are familiar with. at bigelow, we call them our signature teas, which would be constant comment, earl grey, cozy chamomile, and green tea. those are just a few of our signature teas. it's making sure that we never lower the standards on those. for example, one of the ones i mentioned was our earl grey. so, earl grey is number one in the united states of america. it's because it's how it tastes. and the reason why it tastes like that is something called the oil of bergamot. we use only the real, pure --
9:57 am
it's actually organic oil of bergamot from calabria, italy. this is very, very expensive. we actually buy the entire crop from this third-generation family in italy, but it's this is what makes our earl grey number one. so, we do that for every one of our teas. so, there's a tremendous amount of work that goes into making sure that we never compromise. so if our oil of bergamot, the price goes up substantially, we're still gonna buy it. we have to, because that's what you think of when you buy bigelow earl grey. but at the same time, where is the consumer going? what are the ingredients that they're looking for, and i think that's really important. so, we were the first ones to add probiotic, and our lemon ginger probiotic is actually number-one tea sold in the country. and you look at our newer teas. they have a matcha, they'll have turmeric, ginger. so, we look at categories that are outside of tea and we say, "where are the spices going? where are other flavors going?"
9:58 am
so, for example, what you're enjoying right now is bigelow botanicals. it's actually not an iced tea. it is a botanical infusion. so, what we did is we know people want to drink more water. again, think about health. think about what's good for your body. you're supposed to drink more water. some of us -- not big water drinkers. so this was a way to really enjoy a glass of water. so, you just take this, you just put it into your water. you don't need to boil the water. it just infuses slowly. again, not an iced tea. and you get this lightly flavored, gently sweet, no calories. just a wonderful herbal infusion just to enjoy drinking it. i found myself drinking so much more water, so it's just coming up with concepts like this that's meeting the needs of people. what are they looking for to stay healthy, and that's what we try to do -- provide products that are good for you, but that taste great, too. >> alright, so we talked about the teas, but besides the teas themselves, what is the secret to bigelow's success? >> well, i think one of the biggest secrets is the passion
9:59 am
of the people that work here. they're incredibly passionate. they care so much. sometimes i watch them in action and i, you know, i'm beside smiling watching people so engaged with what they do. i just recognize that it's that power behind each one of them that really help drive that business, 'cause we really do live by the philosophy "never compromise," and i think the people that work here, that's what they want. they want a place where they can feel really good, that them caring matters, and it makes a difference. >> mm-hmm. >> but that also then overlays to making sure the employees are all feeling engaged, also making sure you're part of the community. what are we doing to give back? doing the right things like becoming a b corp. we just became certified b. everything we touch, we try to make it better, whether it's a cup of tea or it's the community, or it's someone that's working here. >> cindi, thank you so much for being here and for having me. >> thank you. >> and if you at home want to learn more about bigelow tea and all these great products we talked about, make sure you visit bigelowtea.com. thanks so much for watching. >> thanks for watching the abc7 "spotlight," sponsored by
