holiday. with that, we say, good evening. i'm dion lim. you're watch watching us here, hulu live and wherever you happen to stream. abc 7 news reporter stephanie sierra joins us live. she celebrated juneteenth celebrations happening across the bay area. you have a closer look for us. >> reporter: yes, dion, you could feel the excitement, even though many said they were celebrating the moment in history all of their lives. the fact that it's new a federal holiday instilled a new sense of appreciation. >> reporter: juneteenth celebrations brought more than excitement. >> very excited. >> reporter: and smiling faces dancing to the beat to oakland's lake mary. but a real sense of unity and pride. >> it's a celebration of true black independence. >> june to me is a day of of of reflection of our ancestors and other folks who fought so hard to give us a better life.

>> it's like a rebirth. >> like a big black family reunion, honestly. >> reporter: for maurice mills, it's a teaching moment for her daughter nia. >> this is the day when our ancestors got to be free from slaves. >> reporter: mills reflecting on the sacrifices her great grandmother made see her family could have a better life. >> and now, i get to share with my kids that, you know, we're still working towards freedom, but we're further than she was. she did a lot so that we could get here. >> reporter: unlike other years, this year's commemoration holds special meaning, being recognized as a federal holiday for the first time since juneteenth celebrations began in 1866. >> because the law was passed, you know, it's a holiday. a national holiday. should have been years ago. >> reporter: for sudani king, the change symbolizes a brighter future for his kids. >> my children will will will w

president or around fortune 500 companies. >> reporter: crowds gathered sharing the same sentiment and calling for calling for clank and saying george floyd's death is giving us a change for equality. >> more for us to make noise and come together, bring more unity to the community. >> reporter: not forgetting, the sacrifice endured to get to this point. >> this is mixed emotion and sad at the same time. and rejoicing at the same time. >> we have a long way to go. >> reporter: many of the families we met today travelled across the bay area and some out of state to celebrate together. it was great to see all of the support to local artists and black-owned small businesses. the event goes until 8:00 tonight. it's not too late to stop by. >> love it. plenty of time. thanks to you, stephanie. in the south bay, thousands turned out for the annual juneteenth in the park festival at the santa clara fairgrounds. the event is in the 40th year, a celebration of african-

american heritage and also a learning opportunity for the community on a variety of issues like public health, education, and financial literacy. organizers said the gathering is especially meaningful this year after a challenging 2020. and in east bay, heyward's annual juneteenth celebration came with a very important message this year. get vaccinated against covid- 19. keiser permanente offered free vaccinations at the event to those who have not gotten their shots. $50 gift cards were handed out to the first 300 people vaccinated. keiser leaders spoke about covid's impact on the african- american community. >> being free from disease is being -- [ inaudible ] and you can't be free if you have covid- 19. so, i am telling everyone please, met well the this be an opportunity to use your freedom of choice and your free will come out and get vaccinated.

>> pfizer and johnson and johnson were offered at today's event. the holiday originated in galveston, texas. the state was the first in 1980 to declare june 10th a holiday. >> reporter: , vents and parades like this -- events and parades were happening in galveston and across the country, celebrating juneteenth. the people's spirit here in galveston is different. some of them tell me it's coming to pass because time. >> hallelujah juneteenth. we're free! >> reporter: praises filled the streets from galveston. celebrating what is marked as a federal holiday, juneteenth. hundreds were the struggles passed. >> this is mark, a work in progress. >> reporter: and present. >> we're so happy that finally, the truth about hour history more and more of it is coming out. >> reporter: as they commemorate the effective end of slavery in the united states on this day in 1865.

>> lord, we thank you for those men and women who have forged the way and fought to make this celebration what it is this morning. >> reporter: saturday's event kicked off at ashton villa for the 42nd annual l. edwards celebration. the former state representative edwards introduced the bill that made juneteenth a state holiday. he passed away in 2020, but his memory lives on. >> he would say with the biggest smile on his face, happy juneteenth. >> reporter: following that, a mural dedication here on the strand on galveston island. >> i think it's really fantastic. it's bull on, and i love how it -- beautiful, and i love how it takes the history, you know, from the past and has the future involved. >> i think it's something that galveston needed. for everyone to see for it to be seen. >> reporter: and the celebration ended with this parade. where more folks celebrated. >> this is a jovial occasion. >> reporter: in galveston, texas, corey macinnis, abc 7

news. we have an entire section dedicated to june toneth at our website, -- juneteenth at under arrest website, abc7news.com. you can meet the woman known as the grandmother of juneteenth. in other news now, scary moments this morning in san francisco as firefighters and police had to rescue people as a fire raged in an apartment building on leavenworth street in the tenderloin. you can see one of those rescues in progress. the fire started at about 6:30 in the morning. the fire department tells us that residents felt the heat and smelled the smoke. some ran to the police station just a couple of blocks away for help. officers rushed to the building where firefighters were on their way. >> members of the san francisco police department that were working in the morning literally ran the two blocks to the location where in that short time period, there were already dozens of people

hanging on to multiple fire escapes on multiple floors. >> due to the smoke and water damage, about 60 residents have been forced to find another place to stay tonight. 15 had minor injuries. about 20 pets were rescued. some needed medical attention. the cause of this fire is still under investigation. and we sent updates on the fire this morning letting people know that fire crews rescued 20 people. you, too, can get instant news notifications on your mobile device by downloading the abc7 news app and enabling the push alerts. just ahead, a new development in a brazen robbery at a walgreens in san francisco. just a short time ago, the police told us they made an arrest. what we now know about the suspect's criminal history. and crews are struggling to contain a wildfire burning in monterey county. how previous wildfires in the area could actually work to their advantage. and i am meteorologist drew. the heat advisories are in the area and we're tracking a

we're told the victim is 24 years old. his name has not been released, though. a sec shooting happened about 4:00 a.m. on eddie near hyde street in the tenderloin. that man is not identified and no arrests were made in either shooting. new developments in this brazen hoist at a walgreens caught on camera. san francisco police rested the suspect today and tell us he was caught in the act trying to pull off another theft. investigators said he hit the same walgreens four days in a row and -- . >> the market. there is definitely an organized effort and to get the items and sell them, fence them throughout the city and the state. the nation. >> rampant shoplifting led to walgreens stores closing numerous locations in and around san francisco.

in developing news, a wildfire near big sur burned more than 2,000 acres in the los padres national forest. smoke from that fire is expected to the impact the bay area tonight. the willow fire broke out on thursday and there is no reported containment. some neighbors are under mandatory evacuation orders. that fire it is burning between burn scars of two other recent wildfires. last year's dolan fire and one in 2016. keep in mind, firefighters said if the flays reach the areas, it could help crews get the upper hand by significantly slowing the fire's growth. and now transitioning to abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma with the air quality from this fire. we have to mention what is going on in arizona as well. >> we're seeing fires across the southwest states. we're hot and dry and we're seeing some of the smoke from the willow fire move into the bay area. i will show you the satellite

view and there is the willow fire near big sur and that smoke is pushed into the bay area. it's not thick but lingering at the moment and you see that haze in the atmosphere. the visibility is reduced. we have the spare-the-air day in effect today and who have that moderate to air quality now. the nice onshore flow is dragging in some fresh air and bring in some cooler temperatures and we'll have the numbers in a few mes. >> sounds good, drew. thanks. a juneteenth event in san francisco celebrated black businesses. >> the heart and soul of our communities are the small businesses. >> up next, taking you to san francisco's first-ever black- owned food business bazaar. and in sports, plenty of baseball and bring out the bats. giants and phillies, a slug fest. how many runs do you need to win this one?

>> so sweet. crowds came from across the bay area to soak up the atmosphere and, of course, sample the food. mega black sf partnered with organizers to present a black owner's food business bazaar to mark the events of the holiday. and there was a brisk trade in everything from food and drink to t-shirts and memorabilia to mark the occasion. >> lots of really good food. i have had my sampling of all of that. and some cookies that have black power and black lives matter on them. >> now, among the vendors, the pleasure principle cuisine showcased their salads and they sold sandwiching and southern desserts to round off the day of community. i am feeling hungry now. >> i am, too. >> honestly. a great day to do anything outdoors. although still hot. >> we're going to break the heat wave. lasted four days and today is the final day. we'll find cooler air the next few days and a live look.
