good morning. happy father's day. you are watching abc7 news live on tran02, hulu live and wherever you stream. . i'm kate larsen in for liz kreutz. we are going to start with a quick look of weather. it's going to be a great day if you have plans for father's day. temperatures are milder, especially for inland locations. we are in the 50s and 60s right now. 48, santa rosa. a much cooler start compared to 24 hours ago. that trend will continue over the next few days.

here is the day planner as we look at the san jose airport. we have fog at the coast and bay and that brings temperatures down even more today. mostly sunny for everyone this afternoon except at the beaches and it will be milder inland areas hitting the low 90s. around the bay, perfect weather, upper 70s. at the coast, it will be cool at the beaches. low 60s. summer officially starts at 8:32 this evening and we have more cooling on the way. shots ring out at lake merritt. crowded with people celebrating juneteenth. one person is dead and several others are hurt. this morning, oakland police and crimestoppers are offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. this is video showing one of the victims being loaded into an ambulance. video taken from across this lake shows people scattering.

the juneteenth celebration was centered at a different part of the lake, but police say there were about 1000 at the area at the time of the shooting. it happened just before 6:30 last night on lakeshore avenue. police say a 22-year-old man died. five others were hit, ranging from age 16 to 27, but we are told there in stable condition. police were able to act quickly. they also chased after two men who were seen running away with guns. authorities say both were arrested, but investigators are still trying to determine the involvement in the shooting may have been. it's unclear what led to the shooting and whether the victims were targeted if it was a random attack during a busy day at the lake. the oakland mayor told abc7, a joyous occasion was marred by a senseless act of gun violence. our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims. we sent this push alert when news first broke last night.

if you want breaking news alerts like this in the future, download the free abc7 news app and turn on a vacations. new details about this fire yesterday morning that forced 60 people from their homes in a six-story san francisco building. the fire tore through the building. abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke with victims who jumped into action to help others. >> reporter: from afar, only a glimpse of the agony was captured. inside the sierra madre apartments in the san francisco tenderloin, the flames were moving fast. >> i couldn't see anything because smoke was coming to my face and it was superheavy. >> reporter: two stories above what is believed to be the epicenter of the blaze, this resident ran back inside her apartment and grabbed what was closest to her. >> my cell phone. >> reporter: she escaped through her living room window onto a fire escape.

on her way down, she saw her elderly neighbor screaming out for help. >> when i saw his window, they had heavy smoke outside. i said oh, my god. >> reporter: this was captured by one of the residents shows the flames bursting through unit. on the other side of the building, firefighters rescuing at least 20 residents, along with several pets. 15 people with minor injuries. 60 displaced. san francisco firefighters thanking police officers who were first on scene saving lives as the flames erupted. one officer sustaining major injuries. >> this is mostly seniors. there are some families in the building. thankfully, everyone was able to get out safely. >> reporter: the investigation begins to find the cause. the supervisor working with the red cross to find housing for those displaced.

>> this was a housing project. they are working to find empty units. >> reporter: she is glad she trusted the fire alarm, and ran out just in time. you thought this was a false alarm because you have heard the fire alarm go off before? >> many times. usually, i open the door and nothing happens. this time was terrible. >> reporter: a man has been arrested for a brazen theft at a san francisco walgreens. video of the theft caught on camera. it went viral last week. san francisco police arrested the suspect yesterday and tell us he was caught in the act and tried to pull off another theft. investigators say he hit the same walgreens for two days in a row. he was arrested at another store.

five states with lower than average vaccination rates have seen cases climb significantly over the past two weeks. arkansas up 74%. all over san francisco, there is a renewed sense of normalcy. this is the first weekend months where californians are living in a reopened economy without the public health mandates we have become accustomed to. look at the turnout last night in san francisco. beer flowed freely and people gathered with or without masks indoors and outdoors. business owner says last night is some hope and inspiration. >> when i see the differences, a lot of people are coming in and sitting at the bar and talking to the bartender and ordering food. that is a big difference. >> i see customers. people i met during the pandemic, they had to wear a mask. now i can see them without a

mask. big smiles. >> i'm sure there's a lot of relief from this business owners and you can see public- health signs telling vaccinated people they can unmask. but those unvaccinated, they need to keep wearing a mask indoors. the state has a new optional system for californians to access their covid vaccination records. anyone who has been vaccinated can download an electronic version of the card they receive when they first got there shot. officials call it a covid-19 vaccine record. be sure to check yours for accuracy because some have noticed errors. if you signed up and your information is raw, there is a number you can call. it is posted along with a link to the website on our website, abc7news.com. power has been restored to tens of thousands of east bay pg&e customers after they spent a couple of hours in the dark last night. at one point, 51,000 customers in parts of fremont, union

the nation commemorated the end of slavery yesterday, honoring black americans across our country with juneteenth. it is officially a federal holiday. abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra capture the celebrations that took place across the bay area. >> reporter: juneteenth celebrations brought more than just excitement. and smiling faces sense of unity and pride. >> it's a celebration of true black independence. >> it's a day of reflection on our ancestors. all the folks hard to give us a better life. >> it is like a rebirth. >> it's like a big black family reunion. >> reporter: it's a teaching moment for her daughter. >> this is a day when our

equality. >> it giveit giveit give celebrate and come together and try to bring more unity to the community. >> reporter: but not forgetting the sacrifice endured to get to this point. >> it is mixed emotions. it is sad at the same time and rejoicing. >> we have a long way to go. >> reporter: many of the families traveled out of state to celebrate together. it was great to see the support to local artists and black- owned small businesses. and the south bay, thousands turned out for the annual juneteenth in the park festival at the santa clara fairgrounds. the event is in its 40th year. it's a celebration of african- american heritage and a learning opportunity for the community on a variety of issues like public health, education, and financial literacy. organizers say it's especially meaningful this year after a challenging 2020. two honor juneteenth, the san francisco giants donned special uniforms inspired by pioneering bay area baseball

team. the uniforms were modeled after the san francisco sea lions competed in the west coast association. the plate for one season in 1946. this is the 75th anniversary. yesterday uniforms will be auctioned off on the giants website this weekend proceeds will benefit the san francisco juneteenth celebrations. on this father's day, we hear from some fathers about what it means to be a dad. they are part of an inspiring book called the debt advice project aimed at providing advice on parenthood through letters from fellow dads. >> reporter: when father three craig asked a few friends -- >> asked me to write a letter to be a good dad. >> reporter: the chief operating officer hit a hole-in- one. >> i hope people walk away and recognize it's okay to make mistakes. >> reporter: more than 40 father submitted essays.

neighborhoods under several inches of water. >> that house right there, the water was inside the house last night. our house, it didn't get too high but it got to the front door. >> the threat isn't over. there is potential today for more flash flooding and tornadoes. a wildfire near big sur has burned more than 2000 acres in the national forest. smoke from the fire is expected to impact the bay area. the will of fire broke out thursday and there's no reported containment. some neighborhoods under mandatory evacuation orders. the fire was burning between burn scars of two other recent wildfires. the dolan fire and another one from 2016. firefighters see if the flames reach those areas, a good help get the upper hand by significantly slowing the fire's growth. the president and first lady are mourning the loss of their beloved german shepherd named champ. champ had been with the family for 13 years.

i am grateful my voice has been a big gun of light. when i was young, was dealing with gender issues and not dealing with sexuality. mostly dealing with my body and my mind not matching. singing was a way of escape. it was a way as expressing myself. i wanted to study with a vocal coach. my girlfriend let me stay at her complex. i wrote to the voice teacher and i said i am in transition, and i hope is not an issue. they never replied back. i remember during that time, i came back and i saw all my things in the trashcan. i was homeless in new york city for three months. that taught me about life and the realities of what trans folks go through. applying for jobs and getting denied on the spot.

are people telling me they're not comfortable with me working. people gawking on the street. i am just trying to live my life. he gave me a check and he said breanna, fly back to california and finish your degree. he saved my life. >> ♪ >> during that period, there was this battle because i wanted to be my authentic self. i wanted to be who i truly was, but i saw the price i had to pay. deep down in my heart and my mind, i have to continue. this is who i am. people don't understand what they don't know. that is why i am grateful i am able to see our leaders in the community really embrace who we are.
