good morning. it is sunday, june 20. and of course happy father's day. you are watching abc7 live on abc7, hulu live and wherever you stream. . i'm kate larsen in for liz kreutz. we will start this hour with a look at weather with meteorologist frances dinglasan. good morning. >> good morning. happy father's day to everyone. we will have lots of sunshine, but right now we're dealing with fog and low clouds that have moved in. temperatures are in the upper 40s to low 60s. santa rosa, 48. palo alto, 60. generally, we are cooler than we were yesterday at this time and that trend continues with the afternoon highs as well as

strengthening over the next few days with more cooling. for the day planner, 7:00 this morning, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. mostly sunny by lunchtime accepted the beaches and it will be milder inland. low 90s. around the bay, 70s and 80s. summer officially starts at 8:32 this evening and i will have more cooling to tell you about the seven-day forecast coming up. chaos in oakland after shots rang out at lake merritt crowded with people celebrating juneteenth. one person is dead and others are hurt. oakland police and crimestoppers are offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. this is video showing one of the victims being loaded into an ambulance. video taken from across the lake shows people scattering as there were gunshots. the main celebration was at a different part of the lake, but

police say there were about 1000 people in the area but at the time of the shooting. it happened last night on lakeshore avenue on the northeastern side of the lake. police say a 22-year-old man died and five others were hit ranging from age 16 to 27. we are at told they are in stable condition. police were able to act quickly and chasing after two men who were seen running away with guns. authorities say both men were arrested, but investigators are still trying to determine what their involvement in the shooting may have been. it is unclear which led to the shooting and whether the victims were targeted or if it was a random attack. in a statement, the oakland mayor told abc7, a joyous occasion was marred by senseless act of gun violence. our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims. we sent this push alert when the news of the shooting first broke last night. if you want breaking news alerts in the future, you can

download the free abc7 news app and turn on notifications. details about the fire yesterday morning the forest 60 people from their homes in a six-story san francisco building. the fire tore through the building. abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke to those who jumped into action to help others. >> reporter: from afar, only a glimpse of the agony was captured. inside, the sierra madre apartments, the flames were moving fast. >> i couldn't see anything because the smoke was coming to my face and the smoke was super heavy. >> reporter: on the six floor, two stories above what was believed to be the epicenter, this resident ran back inside her apartment and grabbed what was closest to her. >> my cell phone. >> reporter: she escaped through her living room window onto a fire escape. on her way down she saw her

elderly neighbors, screaming out for help. >> when i saw his window, they had heavy smoke outside. i said oh, my god. >> reporter: this captured by one of the residents she's the flames bursting three unit. on the other side of the building, firefighters rescuing at least 20 residents as well as pets. 15 people with minor injuries. 60 displaced. san francisco firefighters thanking police officers were first on scene saving lives as the flames erupted. one officers sustaining minor injuries. >> this is a building that is supportive housing. they are mostly seniors and families in the building. everyone was able to get out safely. >> reporter: the investigation begins to find the cause. working with the red cross to find housing for those displaced. >> this was a

they are working to find empty units. >> reporter: she is glad this time she trusted the fire alarm. and ran out just in time. you thought this was a false alarm because you have heard the fire alarm go off before? >> before. many times. usually, i open the door and it's nothing happens, but this time it was terrible. a man has been arrested for a theft at a san francisco walgreens. video about that caught on camera by abc7 went viral. the san francisco police arrested the suspect and tell us he was caught in the act of trying to pull off another theft. investigator say he had the same walgreens four day in a row. he was arrested at another store. >> there is an illegal aftermarket. there is an organized effort in

order to get these items and sell them and fenced them throughout the city and the state as well as the nation. >> walgreens says shoplifting has been a factor and why several san francisco stores have closed in recent years. turning to the coronavirus and the dangerous delta variant for spotted in india and spreading rapidly across the u.s. doctors are treating more severe cases, especially in places where vaccination rates are low. >> reporter: the delta variant now detected in at least 46 states, and expected to accelerate. the cdc director on cnn. >> we know the delta variant is even more transmissible than the uk variant, and i anticipate that will be the predominant variant in the months ahead. >> reporter: it's already sinking its teeth into under vaccinated areas like southwest missouri were cox health so the

delta variant now makes up 90% of their new cases. >> we are seeing an uprise in the critically ill covid positive patients. >> reporter: the country no longer a pace to meet president biden's goal of 70% of adults getting one shot by july 4. with vaccination rates slowing, health officials are moving on from mega clinics and trying to meet people where they are. in ohio, this pop-up clinic at a transit station brought doses directly to holdouts like james. >> what brought me here was i had to catch the bus to the other side of town. i didn't know nothing about this. >> reporter: in washington, d.c., new incentives. the mayor saying city residents to get a covid-19 shot can be entered to in a car. $10,000 in groceries, or europe free rides on city buses and trains. five states with lower than average vaccination rates have

seen cases climb significantly over the past two weeks. arkansas up 74%. all over san francisco, there was a renewed sense of normalcy. this is the first weekend in 15 months were californians are living in a reopened economy without all the public-health mandates we have become accustomed to. look at the turnout in san francisco. the beer flowed freely at the bars and people gathered with and without masks indoors and outdoors. business owners tell us last night's turnout gives them hope. >> when i see the difference, a lot of people were coming in and sitting at the bar and talking to the bartender. ordering food. that is the big difference right there. >> i see customers. people i met during the pandemic and they had to wear a mask. now i see them without a mask in the big smiles. >> a huge relief for these

businesses. there are health signs up saying vaccinated people can unmask. for those not yet mac vaccinated, they will need to continue wearing masks indoors. estate has a new optional system for californians to access their covid vaccination records. anyone who has been vaccinated can download an electronic version of the car they received when they got the first shot. officials call it a digital covid-19 vaccine record. be sure to check your records for accuracy since some of noticed errors. if you signed up and your information is wrong, there is a number you can call that we posted, along with a link to the state's website on our website, abc7news.com. power has been restored to tens of thousands of east bay pg&e customers after they spent a couple of hours in the dark. about 51,000 customers in parts of fremont, union city, and hayward were without power. the outage began just before 7:00.

now, that's making a difference. the nation commemorated the end of slavery yesterday, honoring black americans across our country with juneteenth. it is officially a federal holiday. abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra captured the celebrations that took place across the bay area. >> reporter: juneteenth celebrations brought more than just excitement. >> very excited. >> reporter: and smiling faces. >> ♪ >> reporter: a sense of unity and pride. >> it's a celebration of true black independence. >> it's a day of reflection on our ancestors and all the folks

who fought so hard to give us a better life. >> it is like a rebirth. >> it is like a big black family reunion. >> reporter: it's a teaching moment for her daughter. >> this is a day when our ancestors got to be free from sleeves. >> reporter: mills reflecting on the sacrifices her great- grandmother made so her family could have a better life. >> i get to share with my kids, we are still working toward freedom, but we are further then we than she was. >> reporter: this commemoration holds special meaning, being recognized as a federal holiday for the first time since juneteenth celebrations began in 1866. >> the law was passed that it's a holiday. it should have been a national holiday years ago. >> reporter: the change symbolizes a brighter future for his kids. >> my children can proceed and be president or run fortune 500

companies. >> reporter: crowds gathered on fillmore sharing the same sentiment. some adding the calls for change following george floyd to death is giving new hope for equality. >> gives us reasons to celebrate and come together and bring more unity to the community. >> reporter: but not forgetting the sacrifice endured to get to this point. >> it's mixed emotions. it's sad at the same time and rejoicing at the same time. >> we still have a long way to go. >> reporter: many families traveled out of state to travel together. it was great to see the support of local artists and black- owned small businesses. and the south bay, thousands turned out for the annual juneteenth in the festival at the fairgrounds. the event is in its 48th year. it's a celebration of african- american heritage and a learning opportunity for the community. public health education and financial literacy.

organizers say it's especially meaningful this year after a challenging 2020. to honor juneteenth, the san francisco giants dawn special uniforms yesterday inspired by pioneering bay area baseball team. the uniforms were modeled after the san francisco sea lions which competed in the west negro baseball association. the team played for one season, 1946. this is the 75th anniversary of that season so yesterday's uniforms will be auctioned off on the giants website this weekend proceeds will benefit the san francisco juneteenth celebrations. we hear from some fathers about what it means to be a dad. they are book called the dad advice project aimed at providing advice on parenthood through letters from fellow dads. mike from our sister station has this story. >> reporter: when father asked a few friends, the chief operating officer of top golf

tell them you love them. >> reporter: a reminder that the days may be long. >> i get emotional every time. >> reporter: but the years are so short. >> it is a magical experience. a big happy father's day tall the dads out here in the bay area. meteorologist frances dinglasan is tracking the father's day forecast. it's a nice morning. >> it's a little foggy but it will be a pleasant day for father's day if you want to do anything outdoors. more comfortable for inland areas as well. here's a look at live doppler 7 . we have low clouds and fog with onshore flow returning that has reduced visibility down to 1 1/4 mile in half moon bay. that is what will cool things down even further. a live shot looking towards downtown san francisco.

you can barely see the top of the buildings. san francisco, 54. oakland, 57. san jose, 56. low 50s in morgan hill. we are looking from the east bay and notice the clouds spilled in farther and that's why temperatures are coming down in some of the interior locations. santa rosa, 48. napa, 51. upper field. lots of blue skies in walnut creek. yesterday, concord was 99. today it will be about 90. the cooling trend continues for father's day. today is the official start of summer, 8:32 to be exact. one of the longest days of the year. the cooling trend will continue. we will be below average by tuesday. it will be a gorgeous day with lots of sunshine in the south

the area of high pressure that is bringing some heat, excessive heat warnings to the central part of the state is starting to weaken. this will influence us as it drives north. we will see an increase onshore flow and that will bring temperatures down each day into tuesday. by tuesday, we could see morning drizzle. inland areas dropping into the 80s. around the bay, low 70s. at the beaches, low 60s. enjoy a beautiful father's day today. it will be nice and warm. things cool down midweek but then we warm up for next weekend. >> you know i like warm weather and sunshine. that looks like a perfect forecast. thank you for making it happen. >> everyone have a happy father's day.

temperatures in the 40s and 60s. santa rosa, 48 as well as novato. palo alto, 60. in general, cooler than where we were yesterday at this time and that reflex, will be reflected with the afternoon highs. the day planner for father's day. fog around the coast and bay. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. mostly sunny by lunchtime. this afternoon, low 90s for inland areas so that's what comfortable. around the bay, upper 70s to around 80. at the beaches, though 60s with the clouds lingering. summer starts officially at 8:32, but we have more cooling on the way. residents along the u.s. gulf coast are cleaning up from tropical storm claudette which dumped heavy rain and brought gusty winds to the area. look at the dangerous conditions in gulf shores, alabama. the storm is being blamed for causing several tornadoes. this

is some of the destruction in alabama. major flooding hits several communities putting entire neighborhoods under several inches of water. >> that house right there, the water was inside the house last night. our house, it got up to the front door. >> the storm threat isn't over. there is potential for more flash flooding and tornadoes. a wildfire near big sur has burned more than 2000 acres in the national forest. smoke from the fire is expected to impact the bay area. the will of fire broke out thursday and there's no reported containment. some neighborhoods are under mandatory evacuation orders. the fire is burning between two burn scars of other recent wildfires. the dolan fire and another fire from 2016.

habit. we will probably see a heightened level of anxiety for some people who don't feel safe. >> i think it takes trust. i also think people will be leery. >> it may be a pacifier for people when they feel more comfortable with it. >> there are some out there that are probably vaccinated and will still continue to wear a mask. my husband is one of those people. if that's what makes you feel safe, go for it. >> i don't want to push too much judgment on people because i know people who are immuno compromised. there will be a bit of that stigma. >> reporter: think of the next few weeks is a reintroduction to society. the transition starts now. in the east bay, the annual juneteenth celebration yesterday came with a very important message. get vaccinated.

lowe's will be mostly in the mid-50s this evening with the drizzle that could appear at the beaches. santa rosa, down to 50. antioch, overnight at 62. we have this area of high pressure that is weakening and that's what brought the significant heat. low pressure will increase the onshore flow over the next few days. that is why temperatures will be coming down in the seven-day forecast. cooling continues into tuesday or we could see more drizzle monday night into tuesday. inland temperatures will be down into the low 80s. around the bay, low 70s. we keep it cool at the beaches, though 60s. high pressure rebuilds and we start to warm up again into next weekend. >> excited for a great sunday. i like this story. breanna sinclaire is no stranger to first.
