good morning. it is sunday, june 20. happy father's day. this is abc7 news at 9:00 a.m. live on abc7, hulu live and wherever you stream. i am kate larsen. we are going to start this day out with a look at the weather with meteorologist frances dinglasan . it's looking a little gray right now, but i think you have a good forecast. >> we will see sunshine but we are dealing with a thicker marine layer and a stronger onshore flow. that means more gray skies from the coast that has built into the bay. temperatures range from the 50s even though 70s. 55, san francisco. 72, brentwood. we are quite a bit cooler

compared to where we were 24 hours ago. this cooling trend will stick around in the afternoon hours. here's the day planner for father's day. foggy this morning. temperatures in the 50s and 60s for the most part. mostly sunny by lunchtime except at the pages. then mild to hot temperatures this afternoon. 60s at the coast. inland areas, low 90s today. summer officially begins at 8:32 p.m. after shots ring out at lake merritt. crowded with people celebrating juneteenth. one person is dead and several others are hurt. this morning, oakland police and crimestoppers are offering at $35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. this is video showing one of the victim's being loaded into an ambulance. people were scattering as they heard gunshots. the main juneteenth celebration was at a different part of the lake, but police say there were

about 1000 people in the area at the time of the shooting. it happened last night on lakeshore avenue on the north eastern side of the lake. police say a 22-year-old man died and five others were hit ranging from age 16 to 27. we are told they are in stable condition. police were able to act quickly administering first aid to the victims and chasing after two men who were seen running away with guns. authorities say both of the men were arrested, but investigators are still trying to determine what their involvement in the shooting may have been. it's unclear what led to the shooting and whether the victims were targeted or if it was a random attack. in a statement, the oakland mayor told abc7, a joyous occasion at lake merritt was marred by senseless act of gun violence. our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims. we said this push alert when news of the shooting broke last night. if you want breaking news

alerts in the future, you can download the free abc7 app and turn on notifications. new details about the fire yesterday morning that forced 60 people from their homes in a six-story san francisco building. the fire tore through the building. abc7 reporter luz pena spoke with those who escaped by jumping through the windows and helped others. >> reporter: from afar, only a glimpse of the agony was captured. inside the sierra madre apartments, the flames were moving fast. >> i couldn't see anything because the smoke was coming to my face. the smoke was superheavy. >> reporter: on the sixth floor, two stories about what was believed to be the epicenter the blaze, this resident ran back inside her apartment and grabbed what was closest to her. >> my cell phone and charger. >> reporter: she escaped through her living room window onto a fire escape. on her way down, she saw her

elderly neighbors screaming out for help. >> when i saw their window, they had a heavy smoke outside and i said oh, my god. >> reporter: this view captured by one of the residents shows the flames bursting through a unit. on the other side of the building, firefighters rescuing 20 residents along with several pets. 15 people with minor injuries. 60 displaced. the san francisco firefighters thanking police officers who were first on scene saving lives as the flames erupted. one officer sustaining minor injuries. >> this is a building that is supportive housing. mostly seniors it and some families. everyone was able to get out safely. >> reporter: the investigation begins to find the cause. the supervisor working with the red cross to find housing for those displaced. >> this was a housing project so they are working to find

empty units. >> reporter: she is glad this time she trusted the fire alarm and ran out just in time. you thought this was a false alarm because you have heard the fire alarm go off before? >> before. many times. usually, i open the door and nothing happened. but this time, was terrible. a man has been arrested for a brazen theft that is san francisco walgreens. video caught on camera by abc7 went viral last week. san francisco police arrested the suspect yesterday and tell us he was caught in the act of trying to pull off another theft. investigators say he hit the same walgreens for two days in a row and he was arrested at another store. >> the items being taken, illegal aftermarket. there's definitely an organized

effort in order to get these items and sell them and offense them throughout the city, the state, as well as the nation. >> walgreens says shoplifting has been up factor as to why several stores have closed. now to the pandemic and the concern over the delta variant that spread to nearly every state including california. overseas in the uk and russia it is responsible for the vast majority of new covid cases. >> reporter: the cdc estimates it accounts for 10% of the new cases in the u.s. the cdc director says she anticipates this will become the dominant strain in the next few months, but in some areas, it already is and fueling pockets of outbreaks in vulnerable places like southwest missouri. this is yet another reason for unvaccinated americans to get the shot because the vaccines will work against the delta variant, though millions of people are still hesitant or

out light declining and on pace of coming up short of president biden's goal of getting 70% of american adults at least one dose by the fourth of july. to be clear, one dose pfizer or moderna will only provide about 33% effectiveness, preventing serious illness in the delta variant. you need to get both shots or the single job shot at johnson & johnson. the delta variant isn't just a concern in america. it has spread to more than 80 countries. russia says it accounts for 89% of their new cases. the uk said they are in the midst of another wave in the delta variant is to blame. president biden says at this point, he thinks too many americans have been vaccinated for to be potentially necessary to institute more lockdowns, but the delta variant has the potential to cost us more american lives. >> that was trevor ault reporting. if you have questions about vaccines, you can ask our abc7 team by going to

vaccinated, they will need to keep wearing a mask indoors. power has been restored to tens of thousands of east bay pg&e customers after they spent part of last night in the dark. at 1.51 thousand customers in parts of fremont, newark, union city, and hayward were without power. the outage began just before 7:00. pg&e spokesperson said 34,000 customers got the power back shortly after 9:00. everyone else had power by 9:30. the cause is under investigation. frances is here with a look at the father's day forecast. >> it to starting off gray and cloudy as we look towards the tower. we will see sunshine this afternoon in san francisco accepted the beaches. that is where things will stay cool and not as hot inland. i will have the temperature high coming up. parties, picnics, and lessons in history are part of juneteenth celebrations with the day carrying more

the nation commemorated the end of slavery yesterday, honoring black americans across our country with juneteenth. it is officially a federal holiday now. stephanie sierra captured the celebrations that took place across the bay area. >> reporter: juneteenth celebrations brought more than just excitement. >> very excited. >> reporter: and smiling faces to oakland lake merritt. a real sense of unity and pride. >> it's a celebration of true black independence. >> it is a day of reflection on our ancestors. all the folks who fought so hard to give us a better life. >> it is like a rebirth.

change following george floyd's death is giving new hope for inequality. >> it gives us more to celebrate. more reason to make noise and come together and bring your unity to our community. >> reporter: not forgetting the sacrifice endured to get to this point. >> it is sad at the same time and rejoicing at the same time. >> we still have a long way to go. >> reporter: many of the families traveled out of state to celebrate together. it was great to see the support to local artists and black- owned small businesses. thousands turned out for the annual juneteenth in the park festival at the santa clara county fairgrounds. the event is in its 40th year. it's a celebration of african- american heritage and a learning opportunity for the community on a variety of issues like public health, education, and financial literacy.

good sunday morning and happy father's day. you are watching abc7 news live on abc7, hulu live and wherever you stream. we will start this half hour with a look at weather with meteorologist frances dinglasan. is the fog burning off yet? >> it is starting to. the live shot in san rafael, it's already sunny. we have a mix of temperatures and weather conditions right now. temperatures range from 50s to the 70s. half moon bay, 54. brentwood, 73. san jose, 64. we are trending cooler than yesterday at this time. that continues with the afternoon highs. the oakland coliseum, you can see breaks in the clouds. mostly sunny by lunchtime and this afternoon mild to hot weather inland areas warming to

the low 90s. now triple digits. around the bay, comfortable. upper 70s to low 80s. at the beaches, partly cloudy the temperatures in the low 60s and breezy. summer starts tonight at 8:32. it's the longest day of the year. the cooling trend continues over the next few days. i will let you know what you can expect, coming up. new numbers from the cdc show nearly 45% of americans are fully vaccinated against covid-19. that's nearly 149 million americans. 16 states including california have reached president bidens will to vaccinate 70% of adults with at least one dose. 14 more states are well on their way and have vaccinated more than half of their residence. states continue to incentivize more people to get vaccines. doctors still stress the importance of other treatments, especially for certain patients.

with vaccinations available. >> there are people whose immune system is a great and maybe they're not responding as well to the vaccine. then there are people who have done all the right things, but maybe they're older or have other underlying conditions. >> reporter: as a co-infectious disease expert at stanford which was a trial site for regeneron. the company recently announced the antibody cocktail proved more than 80% effective at reducing the risk of symptomatic covid in phase three trials. they arrest the fda its use as a preventative treatment from vaccinated people, and those with compromised immune systems might respond to vaccines. >> we talked about vaccines and therapeutics. they go hand in hand. >> reporter: and for patients, it's also peace of mind. >> i think we are so blessed we had that treatment. >> doctors at stanford have led

one was killed and another critically injured when a truck rammed the crowd at this parade. witnesses said the truck was lined with floats when the driver hits the gas. the man was arrested. the victims or members of the fort lauderdale men's chorus. residence along the u.s. gulf coast are cleaning up from tropical storm claudette which dumped heavy rain and brought gusty winds to the region. you can see the dangerous conditions. the tropical storm is being blamed for causing several tornadoes as well. this is some of the destruction left behind in alabama. major flooding hit several communities, putting entire neighborhoods under several inches of water. >> that has right there, the water was inside the house last night. our house, it got up to the front door. >> the storm threat isn't over. there is potential today for more flash flooding and tornadoes. a wildfire near eggs or has

burned more than 2000 acres. smoke from that fire is expected to impact the bay area. the will a fire broke out thursday and there is no reported containment. some neighborhoods are under mandatory evacuation. the fire is burning between burn scars of two other recent wildfires. the dolan fire and another from 2016. firefighters say if the flames reaches areas, it could help them get the upper hand by significantly slowing the fires growth. the fires market celebrated juneteenth on the waterfront yesterday. crowds from across the bay area came to celebrate and sample foods. make a black sf partner with the farmers market to present a black-owned food business bizarre to mark the emancipation day holiday. business was brisk for anything from food and drinks shirts and memorabilia. >> lots of good food. i have had my sampling of that.
