victims. but we begin with the breaking news outside of chicago. breaking overnight, a tornado touching down just outside of chicago. >> all units coming into this area we've got major damage. >> reporter: the twister reportedly collapsing buildings and knocking down trees and power lines, roads blocked by debris with ambulances unable to get by. this as tropical depression claudette takes aim at the southeast. heavy rain and flash flooding are expected from florida up through the carolinas, and a tropical storm warning posted overnight for most of north carolina's coast. claudette wreaking havoc as it moved through the south spawning multiple tornadoes. at least 50 homes damaged or destroyed in this neighborhood in alabama. angela speers says a tornado sucked her out of her home. >> next thing i know the walls came falling out and i went

flying out the door. >> reporter: authorities say hydroplaning is likely what caused this 18-vehicle pile-up near montgomery on saturday. ten people losing their lives, nine of them children. authorities identifying two of the victims 29-year-old cody fox and his 9-month-old daughter arianna. also killed, eight children who were riding in a van from the tallapoosa county girls ranch, a home for abused and neglected girls. >> we had eight fatalities and one survivor. >> reporter: a bystander rescuing the driver identified as candace gully, the only one in the girls ranch van to survive. gully losing two of her children in the crash, she was listed in stable condition overnight. michael smith, the ceo of the alabama sheriff's youth ranches, had just visited the girls in gulf shores during their beach vacation. >> they wrote me little sticky notes and -- put these sticky notes over my office saying how

they looked forward to me being down there and being together. >> reporter: they were on their way back when the van crashed. >> this is such a tragedy. it's a tragedy not only for our ranches, not only a tragedy for alabama, it's a national tragedy. >> ten investigators from the ntsb are looking into the crash. next, the staffing crunch affecting the airline industry. american airlines canceled hundreds of flights over the weekend and passengers can expect more of the same well into next month. abc's meghan tevrizian has details. >> reporter: this morning the cancellation of hundreds of flights is partially blamed on a staffing crunch as a record number of travelers return to the skies. american airlines canceling 123 flights on saturday, 178 on sunday, and today, more than 100 flights are canceled already. the airline blaming significant staffing shortages and maintenance issues. american says it will continue to cancel at least 50 to 60

flights a day for the rest of june and 50 to 80 flights per day in july. and the tsa says it's struggling to keep up with demand too. >> they are overwhelmed. part of it, too, is that they're having to deal with the fact that so many travelers don't want to wear a mask. >> reporter: at the height of the pandemic, air travel plummeted to record lows. thousands of employees were offered early retirement and buy-outs. but now, the tsa is scrambling to hire thousands of new officers, even asking office employees to volunteer at non-screening functions at airports for up to 45 days. >> tsa says they would hire 6,000 new agents. however, they've been able to hire about 3,000. we think that it is highly impossible to hire the remainder before this fourth of july holiday. >> reporter: other airlines struggling to keep up with demand, too. united telling abc news they're desperate for baggage handlers. andrew?

faith? >> meghan, thank you. now to the pandemic and a big step towards normalcy here in new york city. last night the foo fighters played to its full capacity crowd since the pandemic started at madison square garden. all fans had to prove they were vaccinated. there are growing concerns about vaccination rates elsewhere. abc's ike ejiochi joins us with the details from washington, d.c. ike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. right now it's a tale of two communities. those who are participating in activities popular before the pandemic. this morning parts of the country are returning to pre-pandemic activities. the foo fighters playing a sold out concert, no social distances, no mask. part of admission, proving vaccination. in l.a., the galaxy professional soccer team playing in front of a packed house, 23,000 fans for

the first time in a year. a stark difference from parts of the country unvaccinated. front line workers say covid is atacking those not getting the shot. >> the patients are young people who never believed they would never get sick, young pregnant women who were afraid of the vaccine and they're they're having symptoms, hypoxia and their babies are in danger. >> reporter: pregnant women were less than half as likely to be fully vaccinated than non-pregnant women as of early may. vaccine hesitancy is to blame. the darker regions show where vaccination rates are lowest, highlighting much of the south and parts of the west. >> i think the summertime is when we could see the emergence of two covid nations. that's the big worry, we'll see this big disparity between north and south. >> reporter: another growing issue, the delta variant, now detected in nearly every state threatening communities that have low vaccination rates. the cdc estimating it accounts for 10% of new cases in the u.s. and will become the dominant strain in the coming months.

>> just like last summer when we saw a surge in the south, i think we could see that again because such a low percentage of the population is immunized at this point. >> reporter: and this morning, the department of homeland security extending its nonessential travel ban to canada and mexico. that ban applies to land and ferry crossings and goes through july 21st. andrew? >> ike, thank you. in florida a vigil to remember the victims of the deadly crash involving a pickup truck at a pride parade. the gathering happened at sunshine cathedral in ft. lauder dale, a prominent lgbtq plus community church. authorities call it a tragic accident. a 77-year-old man with a medical condition hit two people at that parade, killing one of them when the pickup truck he was driving suddenly accelerated. this hot air balloon crash was caught on camera in california.

three people were hurt. officials believe gusty winds may be to blame. the injuries were not life threatening. time now for a closer look at your morning weather. >> showers and storms associated with claudette are ongoing across south and north carolina. this system eventually heads out to sea into the atlantic where it has the possibility of reintensifying into a tropical storm. you can see the circulation exiting north carolina late monday morning and the area across the outer banks could have storm surge between one and three feet high, wind gusts between 40 and 60 miles per hour and all the way from maryland to south carolina, we'll be tracking rough surf and rip currents. i'm marvin gomez with your accuweather forecast. coming up, the cruise industry takes a big step towards setting sail once again. >> also ahead, prime day is officially here.

it happened in a remote area near the border of tennessee and north carolina, leaving a teenaged girl hospitalized. this morning a teenaged girl is recovering after authorities say a bear attacked her as she was sleeping in a national park. >> it attacked in the middle of the night with no known provocation. >> reporter: according to park officials in tennessee, the girl and her family were on a camping trip in the great smoky mountains last week. the teen was asleep in a hammock just after midnight when a bear approached the camp site and attacked. >> it attacked her, reached out and was able to lacerate both her hands and her head. >> reporter: the girl suffering multiple injuries before her family was able to chase the bear away. officials treating her at the scene before taking her by helicopter to a local hospital. rangers later locating and euthanizing the bear. rangers say the teen's family had taken all the proper precautions for food storage. officials are warning park goers of increased beer activity as the animals emerge from
