couldn't see. i thought it was like a storm or something coming in and then what happened was when the dust cleared, there was the back half of the building or back two-thirds of the building was gone and down to the ground. basically the fire department knocked on the door and said, we need to evacuate, so we just got our stuff together and left. >> our miami station report there is may have been ongoing construction on the roof of the building. we'll continue to follow this story on air and online throughout the morning. new details about the collapse of a pedestrian bridge in washington, d.c. the bridge came crashing down onto a busy highway after it was hit by a truck. five people were injured. officials say the bridge was rated in poor condition last month and was slated for repairs. there is a likely association of two vaccines and heart inflammation in young

people. abc's ike ejiochi has more. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. health experts say the delta variant that's currently making its way across the country, it targets the young and unvaccinated, and they add that getting the shot is the only way out. 34-year-old coleena anderson of springfield, missouri, with a warning about the coronavirus. >> this is not a fun disease. it's not something you take lightly. >> reporter: she's been battling covid for the past ten days inside one of the many missouri hospitals currently surging with new covid patients. >> there are the people who still think it's like the flu. it's not. oh, boy, is it not. >> reporter: the more contagious delta variant is now in at least 48 states making up nearly half of all infections across parts of the west and midwest. this morning a cluster of 17 new cases of the delta variant found in a nevada town. the cases are people all under 60 and unvaccinated. >> we've been seeing much younger patients needing management within the hospital, some as young as their late

teens, in their 20s, in their 30s and, unfortunately, all of those unvaccinated and very sick. >> reporter: 34% of adults ages 18 to 24 have been vaccinated, the same group that's currently exhibiting one of the highest rates of infection, and now a new report from the cdc panel finding a likely association between the pfizer and moderna vaccines and a rare mostly mild heart inflammation in younger people. out of more than 26 million doses given to young people, the cdc confirming 323 cases of the condition after getting a vaccine, mostly in males. still, experts say the benefits of getting the shot far outweigh the risks. >> getting covid is far more risky than having the vaccine because the heart failure that we see long term from covid infection can be more and more severe. >> reporter: now a cdc working group found there isn't enough evidence right now to recommend getting booster shots, but that could change as more data emerges, andrew.

>> ike, thank you. new police body camera video has been released from january's attack on the u.s. capitol. prosecutors say the video shows a suspect swinging a skateboard at a police officer's head. he's already pleaded not guilty to assaulting officers. meanwhile, a member of the militia group the oath keepers has now pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the capitol riot and officials say he's agreed to cooperate in the government's case against 15 other members of the oathkeepers. a dramatic clash on capitol hill after the chairman of the joint chiefs was questioned about critical race theory. that's a phrase describing an the history of racism. udying - it's come under fire everywhere from the military to classrooms across the country. this morning, america's top general is defending teaching critical race theory in schools. >> i want to understand white rage, and i'm white. >> reporter: general mark milley arguing in favor of the controversial classes amid a

[ crowd chanting "shame on you" ] >> reporter: this heated school board meeting was shut down after outraged parents condemned teaching race to students in one virginia county. >> people were screaming, they were cursing. >> reporter: but one school's curriculum is raising questions in washington. a republican congressman accusing west point military academy of embracing divisive theories on race citing one class in particular. >> the seminar that over 100 cadets attended titled, understanding whiteness and white rage, taught by a woman who described the republican party platform as a platform of white supremacy. this is going on at west point as we speak to our future military leaders. >> i do think it's important actually for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read, and the united states military academy is a university, and it is important that we train and we understand. >> reporter: milley went on to say there's nothing wrong with

as fans rallied outside court inside spears delivered an emotional plea via phone describing how her court appointed conservators and her own family allegedly exploited her life tearfully retelling the time she was forced to perform and was allegedly sent to a mental health facility as punishment for a dispute over choreography during rehearsal for her las vegas residency. ♪ it's taken over me ♪ >> reporter: spears also claimed her therapist put her on the powerful medication lithium making her feel drunk. but when she told her parents she was scared, her family did nothing. back in 2008 spears requested her father as her court appointed conservator during her highly publicized mental health struggles, but since then the relationship has soured with spears comparing her father's control over her life to sex trafficking describing a call to him in which she says, i cried on the phone for an hour, and he loved every minute of it. he loved it. spears said the, quote, abusive

conservatorship goes far beyond medical decisions. in fact, court documents from 2016 claim her father and others are dictating every aspect of her life from which lawyers she can hire to who she dates to what color she was allowed to paint her kitchen cabinets. >> i think there are real i think there are real questions about whether he is simply trying to control his daughter for his own profit. he's profiting enormously as are everyone who is involved in this profiting from -- from britney while britney, by the way, is not even allowed to see what's being filed in court. it is really unprecedented. >> reporter: spears telling the court she didn't know she could petition for the conservatorship to be lifted until she did her own research saying, i've done more than enough. i don't owe these people anything. it's embarrassing and demoralizing what i've been through. during the 20-minute statement wednesday, spears also contradicted recent claims that she was happy. >> i just want to let you guys know that i am fine. i'm the happiest i've ever been in my life. >> reporter: the pop star telling the judge, quote, i told the whole world i was okay and happy.
