the more you need aarp. join today. . get ready for the heat. temperatures will see a spike this weekend. it'll be dangerous and excessive in some inland areas. good morning everybody. thank you for joining us on saturday, june 26th. you're watching abc7 news at 9:00 a.m. let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa and what we can expect today. >> hi. good morning to you. hi. that fog deck is eroding to the west. we are looking at sun in the inland valleys. you can see san francisco, oakland down around the peninsula looking at the clouds. up to the north where you see that black, that's a dome of high pressure that's building in, bringing that excessive heat to the

pacific northwest. nice and sunny here where numbers are climbing into the 60's. the peninsula mid-60s's. 63 with partly sunny skies and san jose. 55 with the clouds downtown and a look at roof camera with numbers in the mid- 60s's where its been sunny by the delta. concord and livermore in the 90's and we will continue to see this heat through lake county, where we could see 110 degrees. for the rest of us it's a slower warm up and we will see lot of sunshine. details on your neighborhood coming up. developing news. it's a dire surfside half. crews have not been able to locate the source of a fire and the smoke is spreading. 159 people are still missing. four people have been confirmed

dead. officials updated on the situation just over an hour ago. >> we are using everything possible to address this fire. we are using infra red technology, foam, water, and all the tactics that we can to contain the fire and minimize the smoke spread. >> the mayor also announced that an audit of all of miami-dade's buildings 40 years and older will start immediately. abc news reporter morgan norwood is live with the latest. good morning. >> good morning to you. its been a hard wait for the families of nearly 160 people still unaccounted for here in surfside. despite the fires and the smoke officials committed to finding those survivors. this morning crews entering day three of searching, the work careful and tireless but hopeful. >> we have hope because that's

what our search and rescue team tells us. as long as they have encouraging signs like the knocking sound, that they have heard then we will continue. >> teams calling an all stop to listen to those possibly meaningful noises deep inside the debris. sonar and trained dogs rushing to the area. >> this is the second time we have seen the dogs dispatched to the area. >> more than 150 people missing since early thursday. at least four pronounced dead. experienced crews who worked in haiti and at ground zero going full steam ahead despite the rain, smoke, hot spots and the risk of falling debris. >> everybody is running in one direction. they are running into the problem. trust me, they are putting >> tina is praying for a miracle with no word from her aunt and automobile uncle. >> you never know if it'll be the last time you will hug and kiss them.

>> josha also waiting for good news for his mom. >> we are praying every minute. we are hoping that she is there, alive and we are going to see her soon. >> investigators looking in to what caused this disaster and the rubble could be key in finding those answers. >> you have to look at the design the building, the engineering, the quality of the construction. i think in the end maintenance is probably going to play a significant role. >> and speaking of maintenance a 2018 structural report just released by the town of surfsid shows evidence of cracking and flooding in the building. still officials haven't determined the cause of that collapse. >> morgan, so many questions still. what else do you know about this audit that the mayor said they are going to begin auditing all buildings over 40 in the miami- dade area >> yeah. this is really going to me be a

prevention effort. they don't want to see another situation like what happened here. they will look in to the auditing process. they are want to go step by step to make sure this doesn't happen here. they are going to buildings overage 40. a dead whale is stuck on a rocky beach next to a richmond neighborhood. are you looking at video of it there. it washed on shore near peninsula drive on thursday. kate larson spoke to neighbors about this large and smelling problem. it's been floating around the bay for a month. >> when we came across and it just stopped us. >> it first washed on shore in marin and this week the tide brought it to the richmond shoreline. >> it's body now hidden along the rocks. >> it's kind of a's. >> the whale is one of 14 that have turned up dead in the bay area this year.

to 30 days. >> which is not necessarily what neighbors want to see. >> it's obviously very concerning because obviously it stinks. we spent a lot of time in the water here. we wind surf, swim, stand up paddle with our kids. i don't know if this will fall into pieces and drift around. >> for now the city will tape off the area around the whale to keep people safe. kate larson. the fda has added a warning to vaccines about the risk of heart inflammation. those terms refer to inflammation of the heart tissue. a small number of adults and teens reported having mild symptoms. health experts say that the benefitsst vaccines out weigh the risks. derrick chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of george floyd. the sentence comes more than a year after a viral

video showed the former police officer pressing his knee into floyd's neck for nine minute. floyd's daughter was given a chance to speak. >> if you could say anything to your dad right now what would it be >> it would be i miss you and i love you. >> chauvin is expected to appeal. is he also facing federal civil rights charges. that trial is scheduled to start early next year. we have a section of our tv app dedicate to the chauvin case. you will find our app on roku, apple tv, android tv and amazon fire tv. the san jose school district announced they are will not have police on campus this school year. the board voted to reject the agreement with the city of san jose ending the relationship with the police department and the district. the superintendent said they

reworking their campus safety plans. it was a big night in the bay area. oracle park hothe largest public gathering since the pandemic started. we were at the stadium where thousands of fans packed the stands with no restrictions. >> the first time since the pandemic that oracle park was almost at capacity with over 37,000 fans. >> are you excited >> yeah. i'm excited -- i'm excited for the giants to win. >> it's kind of crazy. it's like they made it like that because it's the battle of the bay. >> first time vaccination cards were not checked but this fan got vaccinated just in case. >> are you saying that you got vaccinated to come to the game >> i did. only to do that. >> as you can see giants and a's and no social distancing today. >> masks were no longer

no happening today in the wakest violence against the asian american community will will be an aapi care fair in san francisco. this is the second event after 2,000 people attended it in new york city. today there will be self defense demonstrations, a stress management workshop and meditation. this runs from one to four this

afternoon at portsmith square. it's the final weekend of pride month. while san francisco will not host it's usual parade because of the pandemic there are still celebrations going on. we were at san francisco's delores park for the boot leg transmarch. the official event was canceled because of the pandemic but that didn't stop about 60 people from marching through the streets. cornell bernard has a look back at the events. >> pride is showing again in san francisco and it's feeling really good. >> pride is feeling less restrained. it's feeling free. we are getting back into our habit to where we love to do what we do and we do we love. >> hundreds showed up it's so nice to see each er other, see each other's smiles and shand

but things are looking brighter now and you can feel it in the energy of the people that are coming in now. >> and that pride energy can't be denied. >> pride is still here in san francisco. it's not going anywhere. >> the transmarch festival wrapping up here in delores park. on saturday a street fair is planned in the castro on 18th street and there is already talk about next year's pride. perhaps bigger and better than ever. in san francisco. cornell bernard. and the president recognized pride month at a white house ceremony. >> look our presence here this afternoon makes a simple strong statement. pride is back in the white house. >> the president called on congress to pass a proposal known as the equality act which would anend the 1964 civil rights act to provide protection for lgbtq+ individuals. he signed a bill creating a national memorial at the site of the 2016pulse nightclub

shooting. a bar in san francisco's mission district hosted an art exhibit celebrating pride weekend. the expo featured works by local artists. art works highlight lgbtq+ political artists and include photography and wood block prints from a series called stop asian hate and protect our street vendors. and part of pride month the lgbtq+ community center will host a health and wellness hiv testing day. this will be at lake merit between lake shore and grand avenue and runs 11 to three. you can find a collection of stories for pride month on the connected tv app available wherever you stream. okay. moving on now. pg&e is advising some napa county towns to expect for frequent planned power outages this fire season. those communities are calistoga, angwin and mount veeder. there's a high number of trees near power lines

including the likelihood of p aps outages and much of that area that last year dealt with the glass fire. these are areas that are very used to these shut offs and fires and no surprise given we will be in one of our worst fire seasons, potentially ever. >> and a lot of people preparing with getting their yards in order and trimming things and you know the drill and conserving water. you know what today temperatures, if you just go north of santa rosa will jump 15 degrees. santa rosa is normally a pretty warm spot. we will have a good day near 90. it's on the warm side. you go up to cloverdale and you are going to be, yeah, ten to 15 degrees warmer. you get the idea of where that high pressure centers. you can see the clouds being scoured out in the north bay, the east bay but a lot of fog along the coast. we widen the view. it's all the way up to the northern california coast but as you go up to oregon and seattle, you see the

dark area right here and a big ridge of high pressure building in to the north and that's why it'll be so hot there. back home our marine layer isn't going anywhere it. will retreat to the coast and come back in with even more force tonight allowing for mist and drizzle. 67 in mountain view. all the 60's representing a warmer start to the day. sunny in san jose with a few clouds. 60 in napa. 65 in concord. we are looking at the 24 hour temperature change from two to five degrees warmer this morning. we are on the edge and we are getting a north wind in the upper levels so that also is going to aid in a warm up. it's that west wind or southwest wind later on today and tomorrow that will provide the sea breeze and return to the low clouds and fog. clearing to the coast. heating up inland and then a return to mist and drizzle and cooler temperatures for your sunday. here is a look at all the advisories. keouedge he statewid here and then as we get further thutn see

. with the state's tenant protections set to expire next week a new plan could bring more relief we have been tracking the economic impact of the man democratic as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. the governor was in the south bay yesterday to talk about this plan. chris was there and has the story. >> a new proposal by the governor and state lawmakers would extend california's eviction moratorium through september it. would pay landlords 100% of unpaid rent related to coronavirus. >> anyone that's been impacted by this pandemic cannot pay rent, 100% of that rent will be paid for. not 80%, not 25%, 100% will be paid for. >> the five billion dollars package amounts to one of the most generous in the country and would

reimburse landlords for missed utility bills as well. city and county relief programs could see a boost but not everybody is thrilled the plan. the california apartment association which represents landlords panned the extension and said in a statement it is frustrating that the state of california and local governments have not quickly dispersed funds to those in need, especially to mom and pop rental housing provider who haven't seen rent but must still pay the mortgage, insurance, taxes, maintenance, and other expenses. the governor's announcement came as he toured life moves, a supportive into rum housing site in mountain view as part of his project. >> it's more than just a lot of doors and locks. it's really a home for people that are looking to find stability. >> some say the plan to tackle homelessness may be costly but others say doing nothing isn't an option. >> the old things we have been trying haven't been been working so now we are

trying something new. we are here to disrupt and that's what this issue needs. >> and programs like coronavirus rent relief could help keep more people from going into homelessness. the legislature must pass the emergency bill by wednesday to keep current protections in place. in mountain view. abc7 news. south lake tahoe police are telling people to watch their drinks after multiple reports of spiked drink, some sending people to the hospital. until they find out who is doing this they say the community needs to protect themselves. these women, celebrating a party said they plan to watch out for each other. >> we will probably just order our own drinks, be alert. don't let anyone near our drinks. >> police say they want to hear from people immediately if they suspect their drink is contaminated. they issued a list of bar tips like keeping a lid on the drink and never leaving one unattended.

. this is abc7 news live on abc7, hulu live and wherever you stream. we are going to start this half hour with another look at the weather and the heat wave we are tracking in some parts of the bay area. >> that's right. we will start at the beach where despite the marine layer folks are setting up in santa cruz where it's 61 degrees going for a high of 80 today. that's a nice beach day for summertime. it's 56 in the city. 61 in oakland. 64 in san jose and a live look from the sutro tower cam a. you know we will be temperate due to the deck of low clouds though it's

eroding quick. we have mid-60s's through, fairfield. the heat advisory and the excessive heat warning to lake county here and this will take us through tuesday. these temperatures in the highlighted area, from 102 to 110. very, very hot for clear lake, cloverdale, and as we get into the rest of the day for the bay area, looking at that sea breeze to keep 60's and 70's from oakland to san mateo anded 0's inland. you see that pink beginning to invade the north bay. we will look for that today. outlying areas hot. we will talk about tomorrow's cooldown coming up. >> all right. thank you. the pacific northwest is bracing for an unprecedented heat wave. temperatures in seattle could reach up to 110 degrees on monday. rob is at oregon's largest cooling center in portland with efforts to keep people safe in this extreme heat. >> what's normally a comfortable, mild summer climate will have temperatures more like the desert southwest. >> this event is blowing our

minds. we have never seen computer models show temperatures this hot for this area. it's astounding. reallys. >> for anyone that needs to escape the heat there are cooling centers providing food, water, cots and air conditioning. dozens of places across the seattle area are opening their doors to help people escape the heat. in this part of the country not all homes have air conditioning. >> this is dangerous heat. our evening lows are around our average yearly highs for this time of year. >> is there such a thing as people adjusting to this people in the desert southwest. are they used to this and -- in the northwest this could be more damaging because we aren't >> that's part of our concern. the body can adjust somewhat but it takes one to two weeks. weather this hot so early in the summer means in addition to the heat itself we haven't had time to get used to heat and our bodies haven't adjusted. we have breaking news we are following.

a hot air balloon with five people crashed in new mexico. we know four of the people died. the faa said the balloon hit power lines about six miles from the airport this morning. the balloon then caught on fire. one person was critically injured. right now thousands of people in the area are without power. the faa and ntsb are investigating. we will keep you posted. okay. in southern california a skywest passenger pounded on a cockpit door and tried to break-in at the airport. failing then to get in the fbi said he opened an emergency door and jumped out onto the emergency slide and down onto the tarmac. skywest which was operating this united express jet said it happened as the plane was taxiing to the runway for a flight to salt lake city. the man was taken in to custody on the taxiway, treated for injuries and taken to the hospital. the plane was able to go back to the gate and nobody else on board was hurt.

and just thursday night a driver smashed through a gate at lax and led police on a chase over two runways as planes were taking off and landing. police cornered the vehicle and took that man into custody. the cruise industry is making a come back with the first cruise to set sail from the united states in 15 months. the trip is being monitored closely by health experts. we have more from florida. >> this morning the official restart of cruises in america. the celebrity edge sailing today from florida after a legal battle between the governor and the cdc. a federal judge last week said the cdc over stepped its authority in requiring vaccines to sail. >> its been 15 months since any cruise ship has gone from a united states home port and the united states market is the biggest in the industry. >> for now that ruling means cruise lines out of florida can't require vaccines but there are

different rules. celebrity saying the unvaccinated, 16 and up will have to pay $178 for three coronavirus tests, one before board, be one midcruise and one at the end of it. also masks will be required for the unvaccinated at all times and they will have seating areas. >> on this cruise it's 99% vaccinate. >> beth and james are ready to get on board. they traveled here from dallas. >> just seemed like things are getting back to normal. i don't feel like it's a risk as much. we are looking forward to it. >> early their month on the first north american cruise two passengers, staying in the same room tested positive for coronavirus. celebrity said all of the passengers had shown their vaccine cards, nobody else tested positive. >> it's how you treat those cases and how you isolate those passengers, quarantine them and then have protocols to get them off the ship and into medical care. >> and celebrity said right
