live and wherever you stream. that surfer is out of the hospital and recovering tonight. that attack happened at grey whale cove beach in san mateo county near pacifica. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke with the fisherman who jumped into action to save the man's life. surfers say they have proof great whites are in our coastal waters >> reporter: surfer benjamin holm shows us footage he shot june 11th of what he believes is a great white shark swimming off grey whale cove beach where a shark attack happened saturday. >> we're heading out. might have saved the guy by fishing it. >> reporter: thomas masotta was fishing at grey whale cove saturday when he heard a man in the surf calling for help. >> hey guy and motioned like this to come and as soon as he realized i saw him, he collapsed to the ground. >> reporter: the san mateo county fire department said the 39-year-old man who was likely

surfing was attacked by a young great white shark about six to eight feet long. >> there was a lot of blood. i mean i saw it kind of streaming down his leg. >> reporter: thomas called 911 and jumped into action using the straps on his backpack to stop the bleeding on the victim's upper right leg. >> luckily the straps detach from here. so i was able to unclip them and use them as a tourniquet. >> reporter: thomas grabbed his cell phone to capture the moment first responders arrived and started treating the victim before he was taken to the hospital. he said the man stayed calm. >> it was crazy how calm the victim was under i think i was almost more panicked than him. >> reporter: first responders say that man was lucky. experts say shark attacks are rare, but serious events off this coast. they say in most cases sharks are more curious than hungry. >> there's plenty of footage showing these sharks coming up to check out people wading in the water or kayaker or standup paddler. they're very curious. they're very visual and they don't actually have to bite you even to cut you with their teeth. >> reporter: if you see a

shark, swim away and get out of the water. many surfers say they aren't scared even after saturday's attack. >> they don't really want to eat you. you're like a piece of beef jerky and you're in the wrapper. >> reporter: the ocean remains off limits at grey whale cove. the victim has been released from the hospital. in san mateo county, corn barnard, abc7 news. moving on another sign of pride today in san francisco, this one representing brown, black and indigenous people. this is the second annual people's march and rally. it traced the same route as the first gay liberation march 51 years ago which ran from polk and washington to civic center plaza. organizers say they wato raise their voices against racial injustice, police killings and unjust healthcare. >> we decided to do the people's march in order to get our voices back for san francisco pride has in some way

gone more corporate and mocorpor policemeninvolvement and that alienates our community. >> despite 51 years of pride this group says there is still a lot to fight for. pride celebrations took place really all over the world today, as you can see here, and there were some parades. new york city's celebration drew a huge crowd. this year organizers banned police officers from participating. there were also colorful and lively celebrations in rome and paris along with mexico city. this much different than last year when the pandemic canceled just about everything. a quick reminder, you can always find a collection of stories for pride month on the abc7 bay area connected tv app available wherever you stream. tomorrow's the day many pacifica residents have waited for. starting at noon through 11 p.m. tomorrow it will be legal to set off safe and sane fireworks in the city. then the hours do change from 9

a.m. through 11 p.m. tuesday through july 5th, but police will have a zero tolerance stance on illegal fireworks in town. you can be issued a $1,000 citation if officers find you with them. hundreds of street banners promoting peace are starting to appear in east oakland. take a look. these banners are the work of community artists young and old and they're being put up along international boulevard from lake merritt all the way to the san leandro border. each has a personal message to stop the violence that has plagued oakland so far this year. >> everyone wants peace and each one has a vision of what peace looks like and that's what you see manifested in these banners. with designs by oakland unified students, activists and victims of gun violence. to the north bay now where about 100 people turned out this afternoon in point reyes station to protest the national

park service's handling of the toole elk. the animals are supposed to be protected under federal law, but 150 animals have died in the past year, more than a third of the herd, from lack of water and malnutrition. the park service has been ordered to attend a hearing on the issue tomorrow morning in federal court. the iteam's dan noyes was investigating on point reyes today and he'll have this story later on on abc7 news at 11:00. in lake tahoe a homeowner says he shot a bear in self- defense after the animal broke into his home and attacked him. the encounter happened thursday night in meyers in el dorado county. the local sheriff says after being shot is the bear ran back into the wilderness. fish and wildlife officers were notified and found the bear the next day badly wounded and say bear sightings are not uncommon. they blame out of towners for not taking the necessary precautions to bear-proof their property. >> the visitors come up and

they leave their trash about. the bears then go ahead and feel comfortable enough to roam the streets and a lot of people that don't live here don't realize they have to keep the trash safe and doors locked and not feed these guys. >> after investigating the incident the sheriff says the homeowner acted legally in the shooting of the bear. in the south bay the arts are making a comeback. the san jose opera will open its season at the end of september with a digital production. live performances will return in november to the california theater with dido. then in february of 2022 comes carmen. when it comes to california's vaccination effort, the average number of doses administered per day has dipped under 100,000. the latest number from the state has it just under 84,000. about 19.8 million californians

turning now to the building collapse in south florida where more bodies have been found bringing the number of dead to nine. many more are still unaccounted for. the search effort is a massive one with literally hundreds of people going through the rubble. reporter josh einiger with our sister station in new york joins us live once again from surfside, florida, tonight with a closer look at the race to find survivors. josh? >> reporter: dion, things have quieted down now at the hotel behind me where family members have been gathering for information about the search. things have quieted down tonight. some people who live here in

miami have gone home for the night. most of them, all of them dejected because the news today was not good. this afternoon a sacred motorcade cruised up collins avenue. two buses filled with family members had driven past the collapse site finally to get a firsthand look at the nonstop work in the blistering heat. >> i think it's important. i think that transparency is going to help them come to grips with how hard the state is working, the resources, international resources to save lives. >> reporter: some of that international support includes this group of emts and psychologists from israel. they arrived in south florida this morning complete with a comfort dog to help take care of hundreds of family members. >> imagine if your children were in there. >> reporter: who have been frantic for good news from helpless public officials. this crew from israel is well seasoned in dealing with grief. >> we're expecting to see what we see in all these horrific situations in israel and other

places in the world. it's people that are looking at the worst disaster of their life, looking at families fallen apart, at tremendous loss of life here. >> reporter: overnight the death toll rose to nine with four more victims pulled from the rubble. search crews insist they haven't lost hope. some people may still be alive. >> we are working 24 hours a day nonstop, nothing else on our mind with the only objective of pulling their family members out of that rubble. >> reporter: 370 highly trained rescue workers are now on the ground. they cycle on and off the pile in small teams. the work is delicate. the stakes impossibly high. >> i saw a group of firefighters and they showed up and they had toys they had just pulled from the rubble, toys, just full of dust and it was toys that belong to the people that, you know, maybe not be

with us any longer. >> reporter: the numbers of the unaccounted for, the missing have dropped today. they dropped by four to 152. that's because they identified four of the bodies which had been pulled from the rubble. coming up in the next few days florida state officials say they plan actually to build a balcony at the site to allow family members to stand as long as they want from a safe location and watch the excavation unfold. live in surfside, florida, tonight josh einiger, abc7 news. >> what a tremendous undertaking ahead. josh, many thanks to you. moving on now, california democrats are set to vote tomorrow on a plan that would speed up the governor's recall process. the proposal would essentially bypass the legislative review process and without that review the lieutenant governor would be able to set the election date as soon as mid-september. that's when county clerks say they will be ready. the move would take advantage

artists, crafts people and others alike joined each other in person the first time in months this weekend. it was a splendid time at the craneway pavilion craft fair. this event has been happening the last 50 years and this time it moved across the bay from richmond where it is usually held to an outdoor space at pier 70 in san francisco. those who attended said it was really good to see the community together again. >> so great to see people, talk to people in person, see all my friends, my tribe of artists and hang out with my friends.

historic heatwave occurring now across the pacific northwest. portland hit an all time record high of 112 earlier today, besting that old record which is yesterday of 108. seattle hit 103 which ties their all time hottest day. you could see a lot of heat just to our north. that intense heat will stay to our north. it's for that fact you see a lot of excessive heat warnings for several areas in the pacific northwest, some heat advisories as well. the only heat advisories or excessive heat warnings we have locally are for lake and mendocino county until 9 p.m. tonight. we have those temperatures in the mid-and upper 90s as we speak. future weather, let's go hour by hour, show you our marine layer. first thing tomorrow morning widespread low cloud cover. you do notice future weather picking up on some areas of precipitation, some drizzle along the coast and around the bay shoreline early tomorrow morning, just an indication that that onshore marine flow is with us over the next 12 hours of monday morning waking up at 7:30 a.m., a lot of to us
