caused a bit of a mess for others. and was felt far and wide as you can see here in the purple. >> an earthquake centered in the east bay rattled nerves throughout the bay area. good evening thank you for joining us i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dion lim. there weren't no injuries but certainly a lotover concerns, kate larssen reports. >> reporter: we're in san leandro very close to the epi center of the earthquake. i spoke to residents who live here and they said at 6:30 they felt a very strong jolt followed by shaking. geologists are still trying to figure out which earthquake occurred.

>> it was almost like you could feel it coming. >> reporter: it was so strong, she felt her home shaking. >> it was so strong i felt like my home was going to fall its foundation. >> reporter: vicki is a long time area resident and remembering the santa loma quake. >> usually you feel the shaking, this was totally different. i wonder if the closer you are to it the more you're going to get that bang instead of all the shaking. >> was there anything about this quake that felt it feel more like a jolt than the shaking. >> typically if people are close to where the earthquake source is, the epi center. likely they feel everything happening at once. >> reporter: robert legrew is a scientist. he says the 3.9 magnitude earthquake was centered in san

the date for governor newsom's recall election is on the desk. lawmakers passed it today. without it the election date could come up as soon as mid- september. democrats believe governor newsom will benefit from an election held sooner than later in the fall when we could see blackouts and fires. republican kevin kiley called it cheating. >> governor newsom is a ballot because of a mistake, he will not be listed as a recall. when newsom responded to the recall petition last year he did not file a party preference with the secretary of state's office. oakland's police chief is concerned crime will go up after the city council voted to shift more than $17 million away from the department. the money will be diverted to

patrolling. former bay area broadcast executive fred zender has died. it happened just before 10:00 last night when he was walking on the intersection of walnut street in alameda. a 30-year-old suspect was take into custody in suspension of being under the influence. he retired in 1999 but continued to write for two local newspapers. he was 87 years old. abc 7's commitment to building a better bay area includes a focus on health and tonight we have a vaccination update. san francisco has hit yet another vaccination milestone. 70% of the latino population that's eligible has received at least one dose. the city has one of the highest vaccination rates when it comes to major cities in the u.s. of those who are eligible, 81% have received one dose. 73% of the total eligible population 12 years and older

are fully vaccinated. and contra costa county has become the first in the bay area to split its tracking of new covid-19 cases between vaccinated and unvaccinated people. the graphic from the county health department paints a clear picture of what is essentially two different counties. the case rate for the unvaccinated is 10 times higher than those who are fully vaccinated. contra costa county's over all new case is slightly higher than the over all state rate. historic heat is taking its toll on the pacific northwest. a look at how it's having an impact on airports. >> it's kind of the only place people can go to now. >> a homeless encampment in the south bay recently exploded in size. a wildfire in northern california explodes in size. now local crews are helping fight the flames. >> i'm meteorologist sandhya patel, rain and drizzle

the city to do sre ise be a buffer property at manetta international airport that has the faa concerned. the buffer is currently used as a homeless encampment. according to the federal agency, it's exposing that population to unacceptable levels of noise. but residents like scott largen says there is nowhere else to go. >> i mean they're already kind of at the end of the line right here. we're living in a crash zone. so obviously it's pretty difficult. >> reporter: the faa sent letters to sjc meaning the was purchased for airport approach and noisemitigation. airports that receive federal funds must make sure airport property is used for its intended land use. so avoid jeopardizing futu

of relief. flights are being canceled out of seattle which is causing travelers to compete with locals to secure an air- conditioned place to stay. abc 7 talked to some of those who were able to get a flight to the bay area. one man got lucky and was able to stay with his parents. >> they announced all the hotels were all booked. they told them if you can find an air b &b you will be reimbursed but i don't know how that will go. >> and the city shut down its light rail service. a fast spreading in siskyu. >> calfire sweeted some photos today. lightning sparked the fire three days ago. look at all that smoke.

fog not just near the coast but it has pushed in toward the east bay as we take a look at the temperatures they're in the 50s to the 70s. so not that much cooler. we are talking about heat. a heat advisory for lake county continues until 9:00 wednesday because of the risk of heat illnesses. that hot weather is going to continue there. and speaking of heat. some fog is beginning to push toward the pacific northwest. that will allow the heat to ease in places like portland and seattle tomorrow. upper 80s to mid-90s. still plenty of triple digits as you will notice from bend to redding heading into lm spngliis thnorth. g patchy drizzle. that marine layer has compressed just under 1,000 feet tonight. heating up inland tomorrow afternoon. we do have cooler weather headed our way. from our emoryville camera. despite the fact that it's going to heat up tomorrow the
