fourth of july holiday we'll tell you how firefighters are gearing up to respond to illegal fireworks. will conditions be good for the fourth of july fireworks? we explain what's going on with surging gas prices in the bay area and across the country. bouncing back after the pandemic, downtown san jose restaurants looking forward to a big weekend. abc7 news starts right now. now from abc7 live breaking news. >> and that breaking news is in the east bay where a fast moving brushfire is burning south of pleasanton near calipe preserve golf course. why can see the glow in this video from a pg&e wildfire camera. cal fire estimates it's at least 25 acres in size. crews are still trying to get into the fire zone. it's burning in an area that's remote away from homes and that is proving to make it difficult. we will bring you updates as soon as we learn anything new.

people can't sleep at night. i hear fireworks going off at 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. it's crazy. >> the fourth of july weekend is here and that means illegal fireworks and high fire danger. dangerous combination. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. abc7 news reporter luz pena is in oakland where law enforcement and firefighters are gearing up for a busy weekend. >> reporter: it only takes a spark for fireworks to turn from lighting up the sky to someone's house. >> the fireworks make me nervous. i can't tell people what to do, but i prefer they use some common sense and courtesy and didn't put others at risk. >> reporter: oakland resident carl rose says that because he lived it. in 1991 he looked out his window and saw this, the oakland hills on fire, a product of a small grassfire. >> it just makes you cringe a little bit. >> reporter: the dry conditions and wind plus potential sparks by illegal fireworks are keeping firefighters on high alert this weekend. >> the fire danger is very,

very high right now. fuel moisture is very, very low along with higher temperatures and the drought all combine to make this a very high concern for us. >> reporter: on july 4th this intersection near grizzly peak will close for 24 hours. also 20 additional firefighters will be deployed throughout the city to respond to potential fires. >> the oakland fire department will be in all of the hill areas along with in areas along the 580 corridor, highway 13 corridor and lake merritt and then also along international boulevard. >> reporter: all this pointing to a bigger issue, illegal fireworks are a growing problem in the bay area. ahead of the weekend ywarpounds illegal fireworks combined. in richmond the mayor is offering a reward of $2,500 to whoever tips off the city on who is shooting illegal fireworks. >> fireworks used to start up about the 1st of july and by the 4th thnow they go on year-r they get bigger.

>> reporter: his hope is that money will incentivize people t news. a single spark from a safe and sane firework ignited this grassfire in the east bay today. thankfully this was only a safety demonstration put on by contra costa county firefighters. they showed us how using any type of firework can lead to a full blown emergency. with bone dry conditions in many parts of the bay area, firefighters say a spot fire can become a major wildfire in a matter of seconds. >> approximately a minute the fire can get out of control to where it's probably leaving your yard, getting into a neighbor's yard, getting into open space and putting other structures and people in danger. >> the has established has esta fireworks hotline, 833-885- 2021. it's at the bottom of your call the number to report illegal fireworks going off or

if you know someone selling them. the big question on everyone's mind will we be able to see the official fireworks? >> the legal fireworks are exactly right. that's a question spencer christian is tracking the holiday weekend forecast for. >> it's a question i've heard many, many times today. let me show you beginning at noon where we'll see a mix of clouds and sun, but by midafternoon, 4 p.m. or, so it will be mainly sunny away from the coast and mild afternoon, temperatures mid-80s inland, but in the early to midevening hours we'll see fog and low clouds increasing rather significantly. so near the coast and bay at the time of the fireworks i'm sorry to say we expect to see around. low clouds and fog so ilocations near the ry good. the farther inland you go, the clearer the skies will be. around the bay area very glad

to be back on the job after a year of being sidelined because of covid-19. they are eager for the show to go on. >> i get to go places nobody gets to go, meet people nobody gets to meet, do things nobody gets to do all the time. >> reporter: pat dias says he has the best job on earth and after a year of sheltering in place he's happy to be back in action out in the field putting on fireworks extravaganzas all around the country. he put on tonight's fireworks at the oakland coliseum. >> it's an integrated display with aerial shells, close proximity up on mt. davis. >> reporter: and his work isn't done. pat heads next across the bay to begin setting is up for san francisco's fourth of july fireworks show. he's happy for the work after a tough year that had a huge impact on his company. >> so now we've ramped it back up. it was kind of like a rubber band pulled back. come around the 15th of may it

all cut loose. >> it's an amazing job that they all do putting on those shows. we put together a list of events happening around the bay area for the 4th. just go to our website, www.abc7news.com. happening now nearly 48 million americans are in transit to their fourth of july destinations. tsa says it screened more than 2.1 million people on thursday. that's about 50,000 more than the same day in 2019 before the pandemic even began. the pent up urge to get away is creating a crush on the roads. some 43 million people are cramming the nation's highways despite the highest gas prices in seven years. on that point, according to aaa on average a gallon of gas is going for $4.45 in san francisco. drivers in oakland and san jose are seeing 4.35, but wait until you hear this. one san abc7rerterkatelars >> no.okay so high

>> san francisco resident whitney connor stopped pumping when i pointed out the gas she was putting in her car was almost $6 a gallon. >> the gas prices are not okay like literally not okay. that's it. >> reporter: sarah kramer had the same reaction when she filled up at the shell station at fourth and bryant street south of market. >> i'm glad you pointed out because i usually don't pay attention and figure maybe ten cents difference here or there but not a dollar or more. >> reporter: the surging pump prices already have some questioning their plans. >> everything is going up now, everything, food, everything. >> do i want to go on long road trips? how much do i want to be commuting? should i be working from home more often if i have the option? >> reporter: i found gas at another shell station in san francisco that's cheaper by $1 a gallon. why would two shell stations a few miles apart in the same city have very different gas prices? >> well, they pretty much pay the same wholesale price for gasoline. so it really comes down to the

retail merchant. >> reporter: gas price and energy expert dan mctigue says competition is a factor. which is about the avesn the mi icgallon in the bay area now. mctigue says the u.s. is producing about 10% less oil than prepandemic. so supply is not keeping up with current demand creating an energy crunch. as for california which has the most expensive gas in the u.s. -- >> well, you have boutique gasoline here in california. you then have about 80, 82 cents on every gallon which is taxes and over and above that you have a carbon tax of about 50 cents a gallon. >> reportecontinue to increase this summer. kate larsen, abc7 news. >> aaa says 3.5 million people will be flying for the 4th. sfo as we take a live look outside there now expects 40,000 travelers daily to pass through its checkpoints over the holiday weekend.

it comes as cancellations are piling up. today southwest canceled nearly 200 flights and more than 200 yesterday. the airline blames bad weather and very full flights. however, abc news learned the airline also has severe staffing issues. in the south bay a first real push for restaurants after the state's reopening in mid- june. dine downtown returns to san jose this year with added importance, of course. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo has this story. >> reporter: downtown san jose is slowly bouncing back after the state's reopening and it's no secret restaurants can use a boost in business. and things t oufinger e. uphill climr these hospitality businesses. >> reporter: eateries that survived the pandemic getting some much needed help as dine downtown returns. >> we get a lot of people who are very fans of the dine downtown and will go to every restaurant and try and see what

developing news out of south florida tonight where residents have been ordered to evacuate a condo building in north miami beach. a recent inspection showed structural and electrical issues and the building was deemed unsafe in a report rth m launched an investigation and review of all structures that are above five stories following that tragic collapse in surfside. on that topic more bodies were found at the site of the collapse bringing the number of dead now to 22. as abc news reporter morgan norwood explains, as crews continue with the painstaking work of trying to recover bodies and find survivors they hope, officials are shifting their eyes totropics now and a looming hurricane. >> reporter: as search teams return to the rubble, the death toll climbing and a heartwrenching discovery, rescue workers finding the body of a 7-year-old girl, the daughter of a firefighter on scene. >> it's very difficult and last

night was even more, you know, when we're moving a fellow firefighter's daughter. that's just where i want to emphasize the emotion. >> reporter: the girl's father had been helping with search and rescue efforts since the building came down. we're told he placed a small american flag next to her body taking off his firefighter's jacket and draping it over her as she was carried through two single file lines of first responders. meanwhile the death toll climbing, overnight vehicles from the medical examiner's office on hand, this as officials now moving guard with plans to demolish the rest of the building even as the search continues. >> this was not a decision we made lightly bringing it down as quickly as possible being critical to protect our community. our top priority remains search and rescue. >> reporter: florida officials now monitoring the tropics, the possibility of strong winds and rain could force them to

suspend the search in the coming days. tonight is the kickoff to july 4th. many hoped it would be a celebration of independence from the virus, but instead pockets of our country are still firmly in its grip. >> 18 months after the start of a pandemic back to square one essentially. >> the delta variant is fueling a dramatic rise in cases in undervaccinated states. nationwide less than half the population is fully vaccinated. that means president biden will miss his 70% vaccination goal by july 4th. earlier today he touted progress on the pandemic and jobs. >> our economy is on the move and we have covid-19 on the run. >> but he also expressed concern that the delta variant will keep spreading among unvaccinated people. >> i'm not concerned there's going to be a major outbreak, in other words, that we're going to have another epidemic nationwide, but i am concerned lives will be lost. >> but for the vaccinated some promising news tonight, johnson

& johnson just joined pfizer and moderna confirming its vaccine does protect against the delta variant. >> one of the most surprising things is how well the vaccines are holding up against the variant. >> starting tuesday you won't need a mask at city hall, nor other city facilities. well, it's feeding time with a twist at the oakland zoo. the zoo is one of the first in the country to vaccinate its high risk animals against covid, tigers and bears, mountain lions and ferrets among the first to get their shots along with a tasty treat as a reward. bats and river otters next. the pharmaceutical company zuwet as donated the vaccine. an underwater pipeline leak sparked a blaze that is being called the eye of fire, kind of looks similar to something out of lord of the rings, right? some questions why boats were

spraying water on the fire which was already underground. gosh, that is amazing to see, but the spray was an effort to choke off the oxygen fueling those flames. >> that is a crazy picture, never seen anything like it. >> gee. hard to even look away. >> looks a little like a hurricane in the water, doesn't it? >> yes, it does. well, we don't have anything like that in our weather coming our way. right now we have relatively calm conditions around the bay area, winds generally under 10 or 15 miles per hour around the bay area. we'll call it calm and we, of course, have low clouds and fog pushing ac locally inland. here's the view from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero, 57 currently in san francisco, 60 in oakland and san jose, mountain view 61, 58 in morgan hill, half moon bay 55, nice view from emeryville looking westward. we can actually see most of the bay bridge here, although fog and low clouds are advancing

across san francisco and out over the bay. it's 55 degrees in both santa rosa and novato, napa 57, fairfield 61, concord, livermore 59 degrees and the view from our camera across the embarcadero from abc7 looking back at the skyline, these are our forecast features, low clouds, fog, patchy drizzle overnight, mild to warm days ahead through the holiday weekend and we'll have clouds and fog likely for fourth of july fireworks, certainly near the coast and bay. here's our overnight forecast. we already have some low clouds and fog pushing across the bay and during the overnight hours the push will go farther inland to some communities along with the chance of some patchy drizzle. there may be some damp spots in the roadways, but by midmorning we expect the clouds and fog to burn quickly back to the coastline giving us mainly sunny skies over the bay and inland, of course, with lingering low clouds and fog near the coastline. overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 50s tonight, mid- 50s near the coast. highs tomorrow about 61 at half

moon bay, 65 san francisco, low to mid-70s around the bay shore line. inland areas won't heat up much tomorrow, mid- to upper 80s. as we look at the fireworks forecast again, here's your 12- hour planner, midday on sunday, fourth of july, mix of clouds and sun, midafternoon mathere, clouds and fog will quickly form in the evening hours which will probably obscure our view of fireworks near the coast and bay. here's the accuweather seven- day forecast and as you can see, we will have a pretty steady range of high temperatures especially inland right on through next wednesday, mid- to upper 80s generally inland areas, mid-70s around the bay shoreline, low 60s on the coast. we expect a little warm-up near the end of next week, nothing extreme, but probably low 90s inland by friday, but it's looking like a great fourth of july weekend and a lovely mild to warm week
