prices. >> hi. good morning. checking out the fog from the visible picture. we are cloudy in the city from the golden gate bridge and starting to retreat. we widen the view. if you are traveling you have low clouds and fog. possibility of mountain thunderstorms and the red flag warning in the mountains, 64 in concord. sun, 59 in nevado and a look at the beach with low 70's today with sunny skies. as the sun is revealed away from the shoreline we will hang onto the coastal clouds. mid-70s to low 80's. maybe a few upper 80's inland. lot of sun and pleasant temperatures inland. we will talk the fog forecast coming up. >> all right. thank you. new details from the east bay this morning. cal fire said it has contained

the gulf fire in alameda fire. flames sparked south of pleasanton near a go c remote and away from homes. no reports of any injuries or damage to structures and the cause is under investigation. to the north of us firefighters are gaining control of the lava fire. the wildfire is 26% contained. it was sparked by a lightning strike and has burned over 23,000 acres. the fire has forced the evacuation of 3500 people. >> people can't sleep at night. i hear fireworks going off at 2, 3 in the morning. it's crazy. >> the 44st july weekend is here and that means illegal fireworks as well and high fire danger. law enforcement and firefighters are gearing up for a very busy weekend. >> it only takes a spark for fireworks to turn from lighting up the sky to someone's house.

the 580 corridor, highway 13 corridor, lake merit and also along the international boulevard. >> all this pointing to a bigger issue. seized 900 pounds of illegal fireworks combined. in richmond the mayor is offering a reward of $2,500 to whoever tips off the city on who is shooting illegal fireworks. >> fireworks used to start up about the 1st of july and by the 4th they were over. now they go on year round and they get bigger. >> he hopes money will encourage people to forward and prevent potential fires. >> and a single spark from a safe and sane firework started this fire in the east bay. thankfully this was only a safety demonstration put on by firefighters. they showed us how using any type of fireworks can le to a

full blown emergency with bone dry conditions, firefighters say a spot fire can become a major wildfire in a matter of seconds. >> approximately a minute the fire can get out of control to where it's probably leaving your yard, getting into a neighbor's yard, into open space and putting other structures and people in danger. >> the county has established s a fireworks hotline. (833)885-2021. it's at the bottom of your screen and it's on the website. you can call that number to report seeing illegal fireworks going off or if you know someone who is selling them. happening now nearly 48 million americans are in transit to their 4th of july destination. the tsa said itcrmore than 2.1 million yesterday. that's about 12,000 more than the same day in 2019. the urge to get away is also creating a crush on the road. some 43 million are on the nation's highways despite the highest gas prices in seven

years. in fact according to aaa on average a gallon of gas is going for $4.45 in san francisco. drivers in oakland and san jose are seeing $4.35. wait until you see this one. one gas station in san francisco is nearly $6 i gallon. kate larson explains. >> no. that is not okay. >> san francisco resident whitney conner stopped pumping when i pointed out the gas she was putting in her car was almost $6 a gallon. >> gas prices are not okay. like not okay. that's it. >> sarah had the same reaction when she filled up at the shell station at 4st and the brya stre south omad ually gure its like ten >>iceshave ything is going up n everything. food, everything. >> do i want to go on long road trips? how much do i want to be

commuting. should i be working from home if i have the option? >> i'm filling up ahead of the long weekend but not with the $6 gas. i found gas at another shell station that's cheaper by a dollar. why would two shell stations have very different prices? >> they pretty much pay the same whole sale price. it really comes down to the retail merchant. >> competition is a factor. the less expensive shell station is a cross the street from a chevron, both have prices in the mid$4 range which is about the average price right now. the united states is producing about 10% less oil than it was prepandemic so supply is not ded creating an enhas the most expensive gas in the united states. >> you have boutique gas. you have about 80, 82-cents on every gallon which is taxes and on over and above that you have

a secondary tax. a carbon tax. >> hell continue to increase rs >> it not just gas that's expensive this 4th of july weekend. rental car prices skyrocketing. interest is up 73% when compared to this time in 2019. prices up as much as 300% in some united states cities. the united states has been dealing a shortage due to the pandemic. many companies sold off much of their fleets and now are having a hard time meeting the demand. and 3.5 million people will fly for the 4th. you are looking live at sfo right now where 40,000 travelers a day are expected to travel. if you are staying close to home the california highway patrol is going to be in the maximum enforcemsinight and mondayal get pulled over if you have a light out, a

cracked windshield or aren't using your headlights. getting caught driving under the influence can be very costly. >> put under arrest, taken to jail. you are going to have to deal with the dmv, with taking classes, community service, taking your vehicle out of the tow truck, basically -- out of the tow yard and basically you are going to be spending between 10 and $15,000 on fines and just all the other stuff. >> the chp said one freeway it'll focus on is interstate 5. bay area transit agencies are encouraging everybody to take public transit this holiday weekend. rides on golden gate transit, marin and the larkspur ferry are free through monday. there will be special special s service tomorrow. face masks still required on public

the neighboring city of miami beach canceling fireworks in honor of the surfside victims. >> all right. such a sad story. that hurricane approaching as well. we feel for everybody there. >> yeah. very sad. that hurricane has been down graded to a tropical storm. we will track that for you. we are grateful for our fog here. even some mist and drizzle along the coast the past couple of days. you can see behind me the visible picture showing we still have a pretty good defined marine layer. that will stay with us for the next couple of days through the holiday and that keeps our fire danger lower than it would be with our exceptional drought and the really dry fuels. you can see the fog as it's down through the east bay, the east bayshore line. it's starting to break up the low overcast in the san jose area. also in our east bay looking at the fog even in san diego along the coast. santa brasha, up to the north

and it's tropical moisture that's moving up around an area of high pressure that's being drawn newspaper to southern california, also the sierra and lake tahoe for a red flag warning that's going to take the mountains through tonight into early tomorrow. the greater lake tahoe area looking at this red flag warning for the chance of some storms and those gusty out flow winds. right now it has moved over barbados and continues to track toward cuba and it'll weaken through the weekend and then by late monday into tuesday, is it is looking to move to the west of miami so it'll miss it but still, the surf and the wave action and the winds definitely moving in to southern florida. there is a look at walnut creek. high clouds, upper 50's downtown. 60 in oakland. 64 in mountain view with the upper 50's, half moon bay and

moon bay. mid-60s's in the city looking at about 85 for you in concord. 81 santa rosa. 80 vallejo. 77 fremont and accuweather seven day forecast, very little change as we get in to the 4th. the holiday on monday and as we get into tuesday and wednesday, a high pressure builds to the south of us. the last heat wave we missed as you know. it was up in the pacific northwest. that same area of high pressure will expand. pretty sure bet it'll bring triple digit heat to the inland valleys by the end of next week. >> he will watch out for that. thank you. happening today activists will hold a demonstration outside of point reyes national sea shore to protest the handling of the tull e , elk. they are supposed to be protected under federal law but d malnon beinsued. park sein three

trhavet id addition foo d untrack and field star shakira richardson is apologizing for testing positive for marijuana. we have more on what this could mean for her olympic dreams. >> just week away and her dream still in the balance as she is suspended for a month after officials say she tested positive for thc. she won't be allowed to run her signature event. the 100-meter but demands coming in on social media that she be allowed to race. celebrities, athletes, even politicians coming to her defense. a soccer star saying we need to look at what athletes are being given to deal with mental and physical demands. if opioids are legal marijuana should be too. richardson apologized, taking responsibility and admitting she smoked marijuana to cope with the death of her birth

mother. >> i am human. i just happened to run a little faster. >> there is still a chance she may be allowed to run for the united states in relays. many calling the rule archaic saying thc is not a performance enhancing drug and is legal in a number of states but others saying rules are rules. >> richardson's suspension ends july 27th so its up to usa track and field officials to decide if she can compete in the relays. a flight from hawaii to new jersey was delayed by birds. >> video shows at least two birds flying through the cabin. the maintenance team tried to catch them by opening ceiling panels. when that didn't work they turned off the lights and asked flyers to lower their shades. the birds flew to the only source of light on the plane,

illegal fireworks are a problem across the bay area. i'm sure a lot of you have heard them in your neighborhoods. in san francisco, fire crews getting dozens of reports every night. the fire department is urging people, keep fireworks to the professionals. joining us live with more on that message is lieutenant jonathan baxter with the san francisco fire department. thank you for being here. what is the fire department doing to handle this problem? >> san francisco [inaudible]. >> unfortunately we are having

57 downtown. 64 in mountain view. it's in the upper 50's for morgan hill to the coast. here is a look at sfo. you can see breaks in the overcast. numbers in the mid-60s's. it's mild to muggy out there with the cloud cover, 55 santa rosa. 64 concord. we are looking for the clouds to pull back to the coastline and then by the middle of the afternoon we are in the low to mid-80s's and that's about where we will stay inland. mid-70s around the bay with midand upper 70's in the south bay. about 81 in santa rosa. the coast, well it'll remain cool and gray. san francisco, partly sunny in the 60's. we will talk about the rest of the holiday, the fireworks and the look ahead which includes some heat coming up. >> thank you. and there are health concerns this holiday weekend with the delta variant of coronavirus. bay area health officials say another surge could be possible in parts of california. stephanie sierra shares their

warning. >> as the delta variant spreads rapidly across the united states, public health officials concerned certain pockets of california could see a 4th of july surge. >> as the variant comes in you are at high risk this is not a good time to not be vaccinated. >> the real concern is about unvaccinated people gathering and potentially spreading the strain known to be significantly more transmissible. >> probably 30, 40% more transmissible than the uk variant. >> to put it in perspective. >> you remember the rose garden with how many? it was like ten infected out of 75. this could be 40 out of 75. >> they recommend even vaccinated people stay masked when attending meg events which include five thousand or more people indoors or 10,000 people outside. >> the past couple of days we have seen a significant up tick, especially among the unvaccinated population. >> lisa is the deputy health

officer for marin county. is he expecting the case rates will more than double after the holiday. >> would not be surprised if marin goes from three cases a day to 20. >> more than 90% of marin's eligible population is vaccinated with at least one dose, it only takes one unvaccinated pocket to trigger a serious outbreak. >> not everybody is following the rules. people who are not vaccinated, are not wearing masks and that's what increases the risk of transmission. >> she added families gathering for large fireworks celebrations with children 12 and under who aren't eligible for the vaccine should be careful and wearmasks. for those who are eligible, it's not too late. >> the most important message for everybody going into the 4th of july is get vaccinated today. >> abc7 news. and starting on tuesday, you will no longer need to wear a mask when you go to san francisco city hall as long as you are fully vaccinated. this policy lines up

day weekend. your fire department stand was everybody, no matter how you are celebrating the 4th, safely. we recommend obviously going to a condoned, permitted, fireworks event if you want to watch the fireworks. the closest one to us obviously is here in san francisco around 9:30. the 4th of july evening. that will -- available to anyone who wants to enjoy it whether they are in san francisco, or around the bay area. are you going to see our show. it should be a nice evening out. we ask -- and really stand with a lot of our community members who want us to actually ask our community not to use fireworks. fireworks in san francisco are illegal. the more importantly they are illegal for a reason. they cause injuries, and even

death along with millions of dollars in property damage each year throughout our nation and these are preventable. we suggest using things such as glow sticks, we ask that you plan like a movie night or something fun with your family that does not involve these explosives, these safe and sane -- the so-called safe and sane sparklers. these all cause injuries and death. if you have pets we do have lots of people who ask about what do i do for my pet? my pet gets scared when it hears the large booms or sees the flashing lights. close your windows, stay home with your pet, have your pet's favorite toy with you so that when the booms do start to shake your house you see the flashing lights, you are able to comfort your pet to let them know they are okay. >> absolutely. i know so many dogs that are so scared. i think we have one minute left. what is being done to crack

down on this? i know we are asking people not to do it. what is being done to stop people from doing it or fine people on july 4th who are doing it? >> our amazing partners with the san francisco police department and sheriff's department have been working side by side with the fire department for months to really -- go to the san francisco. we increase high visibility not only through the law enforcement but -- the fire department not to go out and say you are in trouble. we are going to give you a see you station, going to arrest you. it's public education. it's standing with our community. a lot of people don't know that fireworks are illegal and don't know why. our police department, sheriff's department and fire department did an amazing job in my opinion this year, going

a pilot is fighting for his life and another in serious condition after a crash landing in the ocean off the coast of hawaii. investigators are trying to find out what went wrong. we have the latest. number one. would are coming straight to the airport. >> this morning the united states coast guard rescue crew speaking out about the critical decisions leading them to rescue both pilots after their plane crash landed near hawaii. >> this is very small margin of error. >> this 737 taking off from hawaii friday morning. just three minutes in. two miles off the coast, one

engine failed. then the second. ed plane plunges. >> i started to have the hair stand up on the back of my neck. >> there's several layers and you can go head and multiply that by ten. night goggles allowing them to follow the plane a oil train and debris. finally they spot human life. >> i saw something on the tail of the air craft in the water. it was one of the pilots was waving from the tail of the air craft. >> they are about to save his co pilot on floating cargo200 feet away but stop when they look back. >> everything he was floating on sank. >> they hoist their rescue swimmer down. >> i wrapped my rescue device around him, secured and gave the thumbs up to go to the helicopter. >> an hour after crashing both
