early start for the 4th of july holiday. it is the first major holiday we have had since california reopened its economy after a challenging 15 months. this weekend, there are fun activities planned, but words of warning from firefighters about the dangers of illegal fireworks. wethe story. >> reporter: there is a block party happening this july 4th weekend at drive city at chase center, hosted by the warriors. >> i could have something. >> reporter: the some without, and the grills sizzling. free burgers for fans who were finally able to party. >> independence, i guess. >> being out with the fafia yea so. just enjoying the beautiful weather and celebrating in the normal. >> i vaccinated. things are looking up now. >> reporter: this block party will continue on independence day from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the first time in two years, fireworks will light up

the san francisco waterfront on july 4th. thousands are expected. firefighters are pleading with folks to leave the pyrotechnics to the pros, but they know not everyone will listen. >> fireworks in san francisco are illegal for a reason. >> reporter: the san francisco fire department made this public service announcement after illegal fireworks caused more than 100 grass fires last july 4th. firefighters drove through a barrage of bottle rockets responding to calls. this year, with drought conditions so bad, they urge people to think and be careful. >> the flashing lights, the sparks, the large booms we are going off, everything the one of those has an ignitable amber. back on friday, our fighters demonstrated how fast a sparkler can start aggressive are on a dry hillside. less than one minute. >> we saw in second, choirs that were quickly a point where no homeowner could possibly is something wish them. >> reporter: extra firefighters will be on duty across the bay

all eyes on the fog. >> fog will be present during the fireworks displays. let me show you what the forecast looks like. at noon, a mix of fog and son. mainly sunny skies in the afternoon. it will be mild to warm. the fog will redevelop quickly. by the times the fireworks began, we expect to have lots of fog. he was the forecast starting a new showing you how quickly the fog begins to surge over into the bay from the coast, about 7:00 in the evening. into the 11:00 hour, as fireworks are still going on, it looks like it's going to be a pretty foggy evening near the coastal they. inland locations may have a pretty good viewing. here in the city, it's not going to be ideal fireworks viewing conditions. we have put together a list of events happening around the bay area for the fourth just had to our website,

abc7news.com . you can see that but on our homepage. struck a fire near pleasanton. it burned 16 acres overnight. cal fire says it all started a little after 9:30 near the golf course south of the city and east of i-680. it is not clear what might have sparked the fire . firefighters are gaining ground on the lava fire. that fire burning in siskiyou county is 26% contained and was sparked by a lightning strike that scorched more than 24,000 acres. that fire is burning partially on the flanks of mount shasta. it has forced the evacuation of 3500 people so far. firefighters are facing extreme conditions with temperatures expected to reach over 100 degrees over the weekend. take a look at this time- lapse video of the thought fire, as it is called, near lakehead in shasta county.

it has burned more than 7400 acres and is 5% contained. firefighters have been strengthening containment line's along interstate highway 5. that fire has destroyed at least 41 structures, including 27 homes. evacuation orders remain in place for communities near the fire. more firefighters are on their way to help contain the blaze. as we celebrate america's independence this weekend, there is another momentous celebration happening to pay tribute to a chapter of u.s. history that isn't widely known. more than 400 chinese-american veterans who served in the united states armed forces during world war ii are being honored with a congressional gold-medal. the first of three ceremonies took place today in o' chinatow this has certainly been a long time coming to celebrate the approximate 20,000 who served t country. >> these men and women served with dignity and for the rights
