right away, fireworks are back again this year across the bay area. matt is joining us with a look at what they are doing to prepare for tomorrow night. >> it is a lot of work to get everything ready for the big day. the waterfront is expected to be packed with onlookers hoping to celebrate, also hoping that fog does not get in the way. >> this show breaks open and looks like it pours out like a big horse tail. >> pat says until recently, it was unclear whether or not many fireworks shows with take place. >> everybody was saying no, no, no, no, no, no, then in may all of the yeses started coming in. >> there will be two barges and one aquatic park. the biggest

obstles e fog, which could creep into the beta might tonight. ricardo and monica live in the north bay and say this will be their first fourth of july fireworks display as recently naturalized citizens. the pandemic, upending many traditions, including a big family gathering for dilip and cynthia. >> last year was a bit of a bummer, the first time in eight or nine years that they didn't come to visit for the fourth of july. the fact we are able to do that this year is incredible. >> the pavilion parking lot will have a newly designed firework show. the mayor says cars will be given one spot to park and another spot to tailgate, he said he thought it was important to offer a firework show this year in hopes of preventing people from setting off illegal ones of their own.

watch both of july fireworks, and city officials are expecting thousands together on sunday. >> we are the only county in the bay area holding a big fireworks celebration, really due to the vaccine success in the city. >> data shows us reopening june 15, covid cases have gone up more than 20% in the bay area, and doctor rutherford says an event this size could put many vaccinated people at risk. >> the risk is for those unexpected unvaccinated. >> doctor rutherford is tripping the risk to the delta variant first detected in india, now accounting for 36% of covid cases in california. >> in the old days with the original variant, you had a 20% chance of getting infected. now it is probably closer to 50%,

it is that much more transmissible. >> keeping that in mind, san francisco will have guidelines in place for the fourth of july . >> if you are unvaccinated, you should be wearing your mask when you are in crowds, even if you are outdoors. >> in an outdoor setting where people are going to watch the fireworks, if you are vaccinated, should you wear a facemask? >> it depends on how packed it is. the recommendations are if you are in a crowd of more than 10,000 people outdoors, it is recommended that you have a facemask. >> 74% of san franciscans are fully vaccinated, very close to he immunity. ls sy are ple fromg event, some may be unvaccinated. >> we are really comfortable with this event because of the regional success of all of our vaccinations.

>> all of that is such good advice. >> fog on the fourth is common for san francisco. the big question is, what about tomorrow night? spencer, will we be able to see those fireworks? >> that the greater probability is that fog will hang out with the fireworks. things have thinned out a little bit, we might get lucky tomorrow. here is the 12 hour planner. during the daylight hours we will have a mixture of sun and clouds. in the evening the fog will develop, and it's going to move from the coast, across the bay, it is unlikely that the fog will obscure the view of the fireworks. here is the future cast radar. notice how the radar is calling the forecast, for the fog to thicken and surge across the bay as it did, this evening. if this is correct, it will be there during the fireworks display, we will be looking at a colorful bank of fog.

a further look at the forecast will be coming up a little bit later. >> we will just envision it in our minds. thanks. if you don't want to deal with the traffic in the parking in san francisco, there is a free alternative, golden gate transit is offering free rides through monday, with service extended tomorrow night, for those who plan on viewing in san francisco, the service will also be free through monday. there are seven legal firework displays around the bay area tomorrow night. find locations and times on our website. fewer than one dozen bay area cities have allowed safe and sane fireworks, they are illegal everywhere else, and authorities in several communities have set up hotlines where residents can report illegal fireworks being used in their communities. police across the bay area have made several large fireworks tips that lead to a firework

airports for rental calls cars today. one woman actually waited for three hours at sfo. it is also expensive. rates are up at least 89% for the fourth of july weekend. there are just not enough cars. the pandemic wiped out about two thirds of the business. rental car companies sold off the fleet to make money. now the demand is back. almost overnight. the companies were clearly not prepared. the number of people traveling through airports hit a pandemic era record, the tsa screened 2.1 million people on the move for the weekend. >> reporter: by now, most americans who plan to travel this holiday weekend may have already braved the fourth of july frenzy on the road. >> i think it will be busy, and congested. >> reporter: at some of the airports, many of them are

bursting at the seams on friday. aa expects 48 million people will have traveled by road or air by the time the fourth of july weekend comes to a close. 43 million opted to drive to and from their destinations, according to andrew gross, from aaa. >> the number of people traveling by car, international travel is still down, cruising has not picked up yet. people may generally feel a little more comfortable traveling by car. >> reporter: fuel prices are not keeping most families from a long-overdue post pandemic away, but it won't be cheap with the cost of a gallon of gas averaging $3.12 nationally, the highest in seven years. experts say summer demand and a shortage of fuel truck drivers are to blame as some service stations have been left empty. playing this weekend? follow the instructions or fail to face heavy fines.

sightings late last week. it is managing to cross highway 101. video from wednesday shows the cougar prowling around a man's backyard. joel says he spotted the cougar jumping over the fence into his backyard before finally leaving. it is just hard to watch. it is huge. >> even if it wasn't, it would still be carrie scary. and that makes the fog not seem so scary. we do have fog coming in tomorrow night. we do get into that liorounthe tvenibut e zetaper off and now speeds are generally under 10 mph. we have a bit of clearing for a while, lots of fog over the evening out of the bay, and you can see that we've got a bit of clearing before the fog returns during the overnight hours.

all burn back quickly to the coastline. a mainly sunny day, going into the evening hours. after that we will see another surge of evening fog. it is kind of iffy out in these areas where fireworks displays will be quite physical. tonight will certainly be a factor, overnight low temperatures in the upper 50s as we expect more dense fog to move in during the wee hours of the morning. sunny skies, high images in the middle and upper 70s, 78 at hand san jose, upper 70s and redwood city. on the coast, high temperatures in the upper 50s and 60s downtown, central school with a high of 65. 79 in the center is a, 80 degrees in santa rosa, 72 degrees in san leandro. the inland east bay will have

this holiday weekend, and most of them expect to be busy. >> despite the efforts of resident biden and us officials, vexing hesitant americans overwhelmingly reject the reported risks of the coronavirus delta variant. 30% of adults say they have not gotten a coronavirus vaccine, and they are unlikely to get one, according to the latest abc news washington post poll. 73% say us officials are exaggerating the risk of the delta variant, 79% think they have it all to no risk of getting sick from the virus, and the delta variant now accounts for more than one quarter of the new cases in the country. there is a new concern in south florida tonight, after the site of the partially collapsed condo in surfside. tropical force wind quickly thstable pa of the building that is still standingi come down as well.

fuels. so far it is unclear how much environmental damage the gas leak and oceanic hairball has caused. it took more than five hours to put out the fire. cyber criminals have targeted a major it service provider, exposing hundreds of customers in the united states and abroad to a ransom where attack. the miami-based company had been compromised by sophisticated cyber attacks, and of the fourth of july. the company says fewer than 1% of the clientele have been impacted, but those who have included a large swedish grocery store chain whose stores were all close today, systems were taken off-line from the attack. president joe biden has been briefed on the matter, and the fbi is investigating. hundreds of fans came to pay homage to jim morrison on the 50th anniversary of his death in paris. they sound pretty good.
