today is the first big holiday since california's reopening. the bay area is getting ready to celebrate in a way that hasn't been possible in two years. health experts say don't leave the mask at home just yet. good morning. it's sunday, july 4. i'm liz kreutz. . and you are watching live on abc7, hulu live and wherever you we will have more on how the bay area is celebrating in a moment, but we want to know if we will see the fireworks? let's go over to mimic lisa argen. there is a lot of fog out

there. plenty of mist and drizzle along the coast and into the city. the shoreline and the bay. this morning, clouds inland. it is breezy, gusting to 35 miles per hour by the delta. 60, hayward. 59, novato. through 7:00, everyone is cloudy. by 9:00, sunshine around most of the bay. the clouds hang out at the coast we are sunny and mild to warm elsewhere around the bay with a few mid-80s in the in the valleys. the evening hours, the clouds are coming back into play at the coast and even along the bay and hayward and san leandro. toward the later overnight hours, it will expand. you be inland for the fireworks celebration tonight. temperatures will be mild to start in the 60s but then

dropping through the 50s. fireworks are back this year across the bay area. matt boone has a look at what crews are doing to prepare for the show. >> reporter: when this breaks open, it is the one that looks like it pours out gold. like a big horse tail. showing off some of the fireworks, pat with pyro spectaculars says until recently, it was unclear whether many fireworks shows would take place. >> everyone was no, no. then about the middle of may, yeses started to come in and here we are. >> reporter: this year's show will include two barges. one at aquatic park and another at pier 39. the biggest obstacle is the fog which could creep into the bay. >> the important part is that we find fireworks. >> reporter: they say fis dispy naturalized u.s. citizens. >> it is cool to experience as a citizen.

>> reporter: the pandemic upending many traditions including a big family gathering. >> last year was a bummer because it was the first time eydidn't miss of her fourth s of july. the fact we are able to do that this year is incredible. >> reporter: the parking lot of the concord civilian will host their newly designed firework show. >> the idea was drive in movie theater style event. >> reporter: the concord mayor said cars will be given one spot to park and another to tailgate. he said he thought it was important to offer a firework show in hopes of preventing people from setting off illegal ones of the room. >> it's nice to have this to do to bring back a little of the fun we are used to in the fourth of july. >> reporter: the mayor tells me a 1000 of the tickets they have have sold out already. if you were looking to get in, you will have to watch from the outside. because it is at the base of

mt. diablo, hopefully this around the east bay can view those. even with so many vaccinated, there are lingering concerns about covid. at mega events like the firework show, should we be wearing a mask? luz pena spoke to a epidemiologist who explained why you should keep it on in some cases. >> reporter: pier 39 was packed with people lining up to watch the fourth of july fireworks. city officials this year are expecting thousands together on sunday. >> we are the only county in the bay area hosting a big fireworks celebration, and it is due to the vaccine success. >> reporter: data show since the states reopening, covid cases have gone up more than 20% in the bay area. the epidemiologist said an event of this size could put

many at-risk who are unvaccinated. >> for those and vaccinated if they come into contact with someone else who was unvaccinated and infectious. >> reporter: he is attributing the risk to the delta variant. first detected in india and now accounting for 36% of covid cases in california. >> with the original set of variants, if you had a case in your household, you had a 20% chance of getting infected. now it is closer to 50% because it's more transmissible. >> reporter: san francisco will have covid-19 safety guidelines in place for the fourth of july celebrations. >> the guidances if you are unvaccinated, you should be wearing your mask in crowds even if outdoors. >> reporter: at an outdoor setting where people will watch the fireworks, if you are vaccinated, should you were a face mask? >> it depends how packed it is. the recommendations are if you are in a crowd of more than

10,000 people outdoors, it is recommended you wear face masks. >> reporter: 74% of san franciscans are fully vaccinated meaning we are close to herd immunity. city officials say they are where people from across the bay will come to this large event in some maybe unvaccinated. >> we are comfortable having this event because the regional success of all of our vaccinations. >> if you don't want to deal with traffic and parking in san francisco, there is a free alternative. the golden gate transit is offering free rides on the fairies through monday. service will be extended tonight for those who plan to watch the fireworks in san francisco. bus service will be free through monday. bring the family to half moon bay for the parade and festival. there will be a music stage and plenty of food and drink options. there willbea ne wi

bueewi. e eakfast will be held at city hall starting at 8:00 this morning. the festival runs from until 4:00. the parade starts at noon. there are seven legal fireworks displays around the bay area. you can find the locations and times on abc7news.com. fewer than a dozen bay area cities allow fireworks to be used. they are illegal everywhere else. authorities in several communities have set up outlines where residents can report a legal fireworks being used in their communities. police across the bay area made several large, admitting pounds of illegal fireworks. the city is offering a reward for tips that lead to a fireworks-related conviction. coming up later one partmei taking to crackdown on illegal fireworks. tune in at 9:00 this morning

for that. they were long waits of the nation's airports for rental cars. i spoke with a woman who waited three hours at sfo. it is expensive. the wall street journal said prices raised 89% for the fourth of july weekend. there aren't enough cars. the pandemic wiped out about two thirds of the business. rental car company sold off their fleet to make money and now the demand is back, almost overnight, and companies were not prepared. the number of people traveling through airports hit a record. the tsa screen more than 2.1 million people on the move for the fourth of july weekend. >> reporter: by now, most americans who planned to travel this holiday weekend may have already braved the fourth of july frenzy on the roads. >> i think it's going to be pretty busy. >> reporter: or at some of the airports. many which seem to be bursting at the seams on friday. aaa expecting 48 million people will have traveled by road or

developing news. crews are preparing to demolish what remains of the collapse condo in surfside before tropical storm elsa takes aim at the state. we are taking a live look at what is currently left of the building. the demolition comes as the death toll climbs to 24. 121 are still missing more than a week after the disaster. abc7 news reporter christine sloan has details. >> reporter: preparations are underway to demolish what is left of champlain tower'suth. a

area are conducting a thorough review of all condo high-rise buildings, hoping to prevent another tragedy. a few miles away, 300 residents of crestview towers in north miami beach forced to leave their homes. that is after an engineering report deemed it structurally and electrically unsafe. almost six months ago. city officials saying they just learned about it this week. >> nobody knew. i didn't know it was deemed unsafe since january. it's july 2? developing news. there are nine wildfires burning to the north of us right now. among the largest, the level wildfire and just south, the salt fire in shasta county. this is time-lapse video of the salt fire and it has burned 7500 acres and 5% contained.

firefighters have been strengthening containment lines alongside interstate 5. the fire has destroyed 41 buildings including 27 homes. evacuation orders remain in place. the level wildfire 36% contained and was sparked by a lightning strike and scorched within 24,000 acres. it is burning on the flanks of mt. shasta. it has forced the evacuation of 3500 people. firefighters are facing extreme conditions with temperatures expected to reach nearly 100 degrees. and the north bay, a mountain lion is becoming a common visitor. police say the animal was seen on the east side of petaluma following a series of sightings this past weekend. if it's the same cat, it is managing to cross highway 101. video shows a cougar prowling around a man's backyard. joe said he spotted it jump over a fence into his backyard

before leaving. be careful. many small businesses are struggling following pandemic restrictions. abc7 news reporter dustin dorsey, owners fear they may lose their shops if the city doesn't act quickly. >> reporter: in downtown san carlos, and debate is growing. the stretcher street has been closed since last summer to accommodate outdoor dining. the city council set is great for restaurants and residents but with california reopens, some say it's time for the street to reopen too. >> we are asking them to remove this so we can have business as well as the restaurants. >> reporter: laurel street is filled with family-owned businesses. the owner see the lack of parking and access to their stores have led to dire financial struggles. >> we are struggling. business is down 70%. >> four businesses have closed. to other businesses haven't signed a lease because they are saying if the street doesn't

open, they won't get enough customers to pay expenses. >> reporter: the barricades don't just cause problems for businesses, but for the customers as well. gail has shopped here for years and how did she get here when she found a parking spot? >> walk through the alley, get through the park to shop. it is ridiculous. >> it was challenging. they are focusing only on the restaurants. we have been here over 25 years, in san carlos, and we feel we were left alone. >> reporter: the consummate and voted against extending the street closure, but the vote passed and the road is closed until september 2022. there are no plans for review but wants to find a solution that works for everyone. >> we have an obligation to take care of everybody and find a way we can continue to have a robust downtown, but at the same time, not harm certain elements
