holiday forecast in just a minute. first, the latest on the building collapse in florida. >> the search and rescue effort has been temporarily suspended. crews prepare the remaining tower for demolition. the rest of the building could be brought down as soon as today. it's a race against time as tropical storm elsa threatens to bring dangerous conditions. abc's trevor ault is right there in surfside with the very latest. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. officials have not said when they expect the demolition to happen. they've been planning to bring this building down today. that's a much faster timeline than they originally thought was the rescue crews are working quickly. they know how delicate this situation is and it could be dangerous to rush. this morning the surfside search and rescue on pause as officials now prep to demolish what remains of the building. structural instability and the

threat of tropical storm elsa convincing authorities it's safest to bring the building down in a controlled fashion. >> we're still hopeful we can do the demolition before the storm. we're also hopeful the storm is going in another direction. we are proceeding as quickly as we possibly can. >> reporter: officials say it was necessary to halt the search for now because crews have already begun drilling holes into columns. demolitions expert dan hoffman said those holes will be filled with dynamite and thoroughly wrapped to eliminate debris from the blast. >> you have to go away from the debris pile that they need to continue their recovery process. the risk is probably acceptable only because they're in such a rush to get the recovery process back. >> reporter: rescue workers remain determined to find the 121 people still unaccounted for. on saturday, the death toll climbing to 24 and those who

live there are being told they can't ever go back home. >> this is not about losing property. this is about trauma. it's about emotions. >> reporter: by shear luck eric demoura spend the night of the collapse at the home of his girlfriend, fernanda figueiredo. he's grateful for that spur of the moment decision that may have saved his life. he has to leave almost everything behind. >> it's something that will always be with me. no matter where we live. no matter how beautiful our pho future, you just don't heal from this. you just don't. >> reporter: authorities say it simply isn't safe for anyone to go back inside this building before they demolish it.

some residents are understandably upset about that especially those who had to hurry out of this building without their pets. while it's the fourth of july miami beach has canceled their celebrations today because of this tragedy. eva? >> trevor ault, thank you. rob is tracking tropical storm elsa which is over in cuba right now. what can we expect as this edges towards florida? >> i think all of florida will be impacted by this. it's been latching haiti overnight, cuba as well. 65-mile-per-hour winds, and looks to be getting better organized. about 80 miles to the east of jamaica. tropical storm watches are up for the florida keys as this track brings it into the florida straights monday afternoon. that's when we'll start to see impact into miami. tuesday afternoon through tampa and up through the southeast. if it goes 50 miles in either direction, all the florida peninsula, including miami, will be impacted. will your travel be impacted for

that? across i-10 we expect to see showers. hot and dry across much of the west. good travel conditions across the midwest. we'll talk more about the holiday forecast later in the broadcast. dan? >> thank you, robert. let's stay on the subject of holiday travel. the holiday weekend comes to a close tomorrow. that means travel rush. huge crowds expected at airports and on the roads. elwyn lopez is in atlanta with a look ahead. elwyn, good morning. >> reporter: dan, good morning. the atlanta airport expecting to see 1.5 million passengers by the end of the holiday weekend. air travel breaking records, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. on friday alone, tsa screened nearly 2.2 million people. that's 12,000 more than on that same day in 2019. this weekend though, kicked off with hundreds of cancellations and delays. dallas/ft. worth had the most canceled flights, not just in the u.s., but in the world.

the rise in demand crippling major airlines. despite high gas prices, the bulk of the travel is on the roadways. aaa predicts road travel will be higher than it was this time in 2019 before the pandemic began. if you're coming back home on monday, experts say get on the road before 1:00 p.m. whit? >> get that early start. elwyn lopez, thanks so much. let's bring in everett kelly the president of afge, the union representing tsa workers. everett, good morning to you. thanks for joining us on this fourth of july. we're seeing people traveling in record numbers as you just heard, even topping pre-pandemic levels. we know there are major staffing shortages. not just at tsa, but with the airlines as well. what should travelers expect for the rest of the holiday weekend? >> thank you for having me this morning. it's good to be here. that's a great question. as we know, travel is picking up. it's tremendous. we can expect increased wait

times. we also can expect the continued professionalism of the tsa. we have to remember that these are the same employees that worked during the longest shutdown in history without receiving a paycheck. also one of the deadliest pandemics the world has ever known. they worked every day because they're patriotic workers at tsa. you can expect them to be courteous, while at the same time ensuring that everyone has the ability to travel safely. >> these are frontline workers and they've been in the middle of it since the beginning. tsa says it plans to hire thousands of workers by the end of the summer. in the meantime they're stretched thin. office workers are being asked to help out with security lines. what is being done and what needs to be done to address these staffing issues? >> let me say that, you know, if i can just be real, the previous administration really dropped

the ball when it comes to planning because tsa went from 46,000 employees to around 41,000 during the pandemic. that should have never happened. what the new administration is trying to do is beef up the hiring. they pledged to hire about 6,000 new employees prior to this holiday. however, they fell a little short. not because they've not been trying, but because all the things that has to be done in order to make sure that one has been hired, been trained and get ready to get on the ground floor and perform their duties. >> everybody is looking forward to a smoother travel process. everett kelly, thank you for your time. happy fourth of july. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> eva? now to that hours' long police standoff in massachusetts with an armed group in tactical gear. 11 suspects arrested.

janai norman joins us with the details. good morning, janai. >> reporter: eva, good morning. that standoff prompted police to order people to shelter in place and shutting down a portion of a major interstate. before finally ending peacefully. this morning witnesses speaking out after a nine-hour standoff in massachusetts. >> cops after cops after cops. right next to my house. >> reporter: it was just after 1:30 a.m. saturday when a massachusetts state trooper saw a group of people dressed in military style uniforms in tactical gear on i-95. the group calling itself a militia that adheres to sovereign ideology, telling law enforcement they were traveling from rhode island to maine for training. authorities say the group claiming they don't recognize our laws, and fleeing into a nearby wooded area. police ordering people nearby to shelter in place and closing down part of i-95.

>> we've been watching from a window. it's wild seeing all the rifles on the street. >> reporter: after a nine-hour standoff, authorities say they reached a peaceful surrender. in total 11 people arrested, 2 refusing to identify themselves. so far troopers have recovered eight firearms. officials say none of the men had a license to carry. police say it's unclear whether they posed a threat. one of the members life streamed this video on the group's youtube channel. >> we're not anti-government. we're not anti-police. we're not sovereign citizens. >> there were several carrying long guns with body armor. with camouflage. any time you see a group like this if you are law enforcement, you have to at least check out who they are. >> according to law enforcement officials the self-professed leader of the group wanted to make it known their ideology is not anti-government and they wanted a voice and wanted to be

heard. dan? >> wild story. janai, thank you very much. we'll turn to a massive abc's julia macmar lane joins us with breaking details. >> reporter: good morning, eva. the holy see press office issued a telegram stating this afternoon the holy father went to the hospital in rome where he will undergo a scheduled surgery for the colon. it will be carriied out by dr. serge joe alfieri. he has had no scheduled public engagements this month, so it would seem -- it seems to be that this was not an emergency. this morning, he was seen c carrying out his usual sunday duties from his balcony. dan? we're going to turn now to a

massive cyberattack with global reach and the investigation into who might be behind it. abc's faith abubey is on that story from washington this morning. faith, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. abc news learned this latest round of ransomware attack comes weeks after the department of homeland security warned law enforcement and government agencies across the country that these types of attacks will likely increase. according to cyber security researchers more than a thousand companies have been crippled by this attack so far. many of them small businesses. their computer networks paralyzed here in the states and also abroad. experts say it appears a russia-based hacking group deployed the ransomware through its i.t. company. they use this software for companies around the world. here's what kaseya's ceo said to abc's deidre bolton. >> we believe we've addressed the issues. we're 100% confident we know how it happened and we've remediated

it. >> reporter: president biden said he instructed the intelligence community to give him a deep dive and he'll learn more details sometime today. he says there's no evidence at this time that the russian government was involved. if the u.s. finds the kremlin knew about the attack that was behind it, and quote, i told putin we will respond. this comes after several recent major cyberattacks by hackers believed to be based in russia, including the recent attacks on the colonial pipeline and meat supplier jbs foods. the russian government has denied any involvement in any of these attacks, but in the meantime, the cybersecurity arm of the homeland security says they're closely monitoring the situation. eva? >> faith abubey, thank you so much. to politics now and former president trump attacking new york prosecutors for indicting his company and its chief financial officer. at a rally in florida trump calling it prosecutorial misconduct and a witch hunt.

he appeared to acknowledge the tax schemes prosecutors say involved having the company hide fringe benefits paid to executives, trump questioned whether it was a crime. president biden is at the white house after a trip across the country focusing on the vaccine effort. the u.s. is falling short of the president's goal of getting 70% of adults getting one dose by today, july 4th. maryalice parks has more on that. maryalice, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. the president told americans he was hoping americans could enjoy a fourth of july barbecue. he's hosting one here tonight. they say they're expecting a thousand people including military families and essential workers. this will be the largest event at the white house since the president took office. all weekend we've been hearing the president celebrating how far this country has come. his team has been drawing the comparison to last year when the country was in the thick of serious lockdowns with covid

cases so high. this fourth of july represents a missed deadline for this white house. the president said he hoped 70% of americans would have received a covid-19 vaccine shot by this weekend. the president, vice president and first lady were around the country continuing that message, continuing to tell people they hope they will get the vaccine, especially that second shot. if they need it, but by our projections, the country will end up about 7.5 million shots short of that benchmark. an estimated 67% of adults will receive that vaccine by this weekend. dan? >> maryalice, thank you. let's bring in martha raddatz who is in washington. she'll be hosting "this week" later this morning. martha, one of our polls shows that three in ten american adults haven't got the vaccine and likely will not. you recently visited west virginia to talk to people who are hesitant about the vaccine. what did you learn there? >> reporter: dan, it was

interesting. west virginia was a model for getting the vaccine distributed. they had a high vaccination rate. now it's plateaued. we talked to a lot of young people. it's the young people who aren't getting it. they're saying i'm not going to get that sick. i don't think i need it. young person after young person said the same thing. we went to a vaccination clinic. they were mobbed in february. when we went in there, there was no one there. absolutely no one there. the doctor told us, when i said do you think people will start getting the vaccination, people like on the poll you just mentioned, she said i don't think they will. >> discouraging signs out of west virginia. let's go overseas for a moment. american troops are pulling out of afghanistan on the orders of president biden. you made a trip to that country. there have been reports of

rising violence with news the taliban seized more territory overnight. what did you see on the ground there? >> reporter: dan, i've been there many times, as you have. as soon as i got off the plane, it felt chaotic and more dangerous than usual. u.s. troops are pulling out. they're out of bagram. the coalition troops as well. the commanding general there, austin scott miller, is clearly concerned about this and what happens to afghanistan in the coming months without the u.s. presence there, without the u.s. helping out those afghan forces. the afghan forces have been overrun all over afghanistan. they've surrendered. they have been massacred in certain areas. so it is very, very worse. a really fascinating interview with that general who you can see the concern on his face. >> dicey times in afghanistan after two decades of american involvement. martha, thank you. martha has a big show coming up

let's talk about basketball, the nba playoffs and celebration in milwaukee. as the bucks head to the finals, khris middleton racked up 32 points including 16 straight in the third quarter to lead milwaukee to a 118-107 victory over the hawks. they took the eastern conference finals in six games. jrue holiday added 27 points, but gave the credit to middleton. >> khris carried us. he carried us there for a lot of it. leaving his heart out there. we're going to go down, we're going down on his shoulders. i'm riding with him. riding right to the finals. >> they sure are. it's the first time since the 1970 glory days of kareem abdul-jabbar that the bucks have reached the finals. game one is tuesday in phoenix versus the suns. should be fun. >> our executive producer celebrating in my ear. that's her hometown team. >> that's right. she'll be prepped for the finals. >> she's a big football fan.

actress felicia rashad apologizing for cheering the overturning of bill cosby's sexual assault conviction. the apology comes in a letter to the students of howard university where she's the dean of the school's college of fine arts. in the letter obtained by cnn, rashad writes, my remarks were in no way written to survivors of sexual assault. the actress played cosby's wife on his sitcom in the '80s. this just in. the vatican says pope francis has gone to a rome hospital for scheduled surgery for restriction of the colon. the brief announcement didn't say when the surgery would be performed, but it said there would be a medical bulletin issued after the surgery. the 84-year-old pope was seen earlier today greeting the public in st. peter's square as a sunday tradition. let's start this half hour though with the olympics and a lot of raised eyebrows about the rules officials have put in place. controversies include a ruling about swim caps and the

suspension of the sprinter sha'carri richardson for marijuana use. zohreen shah is on the story. zohreen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. there are a lot of folks speaking about the rules of the game. cultural norms clashing with competition. this morning the list of controversy surrounding the international olympic committee rules growing. sha'carri richardson testing positive for thc, a key component in marijuana. disqualifying her from the games because she violated the doping policy. former nfl running back ricky williams, who retired in 2004 and became an outspoken advocate of cannabis as medicine talking about it on espn's "sportscenter." >> hopefully they ask themselves seriously does this feel right. i hope they do the right thing. >> reporter: celebrities, politicians and fans calling foul. some athletes saying they should take a closer look at marijuana
