joining us. you are watching abc 7 news at 6:00. live here on abc 7. hulu live and wherever you stream. we begin our 4th of july coverage now with abc news, reporter jr stone, live on our roof tonight overlooking the embarcadero in san francisco and jr, i presume there are a lot of folks enjoying the day. >> reporter: pack your patience. we will be heading out. some people don't want to deal with the traffic so they are parking down the embarcadero and walking in. there is a hope that the fog will not be too thick come 9:30. we were just down at fisherman's wharf and you can see all of the people here. they have their blankets down and waiting it out until that fireworks

show that starts at 9:30 this evening. it will last for 22 minutes and 16 seconds to be exact. now, if you are coming to san francisco you can see the fireworks fromfm aquatic park. northern waterfront, masks are optional. it was 50/50 this afternoon in the whatever wharf. the fireworks will happen with or without the fog. when we were out at aquatic park you and are looking at a live look the embarcadero, you will feel the breeze. you want will to dress warm. a lot of the families i talked with said even if it is a real foggy show that is okay because they are there with friends and they are there with family members. happy 4th of july to everybody. we will throw it back to you in the studio. the countdown is certainly on. year ago. jr, many thanks to you. >> yes. now, the bay area is celebrating the 4th of july in true american style. parades and picnics were back on this year after being canceled pie covid- 19 in 2020. abc 7 news reporter gives us a taste of that red, white and and and the bay. marching bands were making a come back. so are the bagpipers, the annual july 4th parade was back. a star spangled tradition here. hundreds of people came out to watch. >> it has been great to have the community come together, finally, feels like the first time. >> i was super duper excited for the parade. it has been a really long time. especially with covid-19 happening. >> reporter: covid-19 canceled last year's parade. it looks like the spirit never left. >> what does 4th of july mean to you? >> being out without a mask. being surrounded with family

and friends. >> reporter: here, july fourth was all about freedom and patriotism on board the uss hornet. a squadron of civilian pilots made this fly over honoring fallen men and women that served in the armed forces. playing host to the july fourth family. this family is visiting from dallas nofor the kids, having this experience it means everything to us. learning about the history of the country. it means everything everything >> reporter: this retired navy officer told us what july 4th means to him. >> it is a freedom for the nation. we are coming out of covid-19 it is a joy to see this many people. >> reporter: the annual 4th of july picnic was back. >> no parade or fireworks but a great day to have a picnic. >> reporter: friends and neighbors together again making a toast. >> god bless america. >> reporter: back to you.

>> if you don't want to deal with traffic and parking in san francisco there is a free alternative. golden gate transit is offering free rides on the ferries through monday. service extended tonight for those that plan on viewing the fireworks in san francisco with the last ferry leaving 30 minutes after the show ends. bus service will through monday. >> it is the show set for the concord pavilion. organizers say it will be the largest seen in the city. tickets are $25. it will be parked every other space and there are no concessions so you will need to bring your own food and drink. on the peninsula, san mateo firefighters broke out the engines for the parade this morning, this one took place at the park, featuring a vintage truck. if you are not familiar with the neighborhood it is boarded by

280 to the west and highway 92 to the south. festivities in piedmont has a new look this year. the annual 4th of july parade and party in the park had to be canceled because of the pandemic. instead the city took the parade to the neighborhood. vehicles played its way around town with the barrelhouse jazz band bringing a bit of the party spirit to the commune -- community. >> we are making lemonade out of lemons we are doing the best we can. >> very creative. >> everyone is hoping things will be back to normal next. the big question will be if we will be able to see the fireworks and if history reports itself it might be a little hit- or-miss. >> that is true. the weather conditions are certainly back to normal for 4th of july. it means we have a developing marine

layer. low clouds and fog near the coast right now. let's look at the forecast animation. 6:00, 9:00, just before the fireworks begin. we will see the fog expanding. hard to see how dense it will be. there be fog present reaching across the bay. continuing through midnight. now, the fireworks forecast looks like this. inland areas, holding fireworks should have good viewing conditions, only at the coastline and near the bay that we expect the fog to possibly interfere with our viewing conditions. don't let the fog dampen your holiday spirit. get out and enjoy it any how. we will monitor the conditions if there is any change. >> all right, spencer, thanks. there are several road closures in oakland through midnight. keep that in mind. it is to help the 4th of july crowds get under control. avoid lakeshore and grand avenues near the park. over the holiday weekend cars sometimes double or triple park causing

traffic jams and blocking roads for fire trucks and ambulances. high fire danger. a poplar spot. cars are not allowed to be on a stretch of grizzly peak boulevard. there are checkpoints and the police will turn people away. those that live in the area will need an id to get in. the area is considered a high fire hazard zone because of dry brush and trees. a warning tonight that your pets are not fans of fireworks. the humane society say more pets go missing on the 4th of july than any other year. >> it is so avoidable. the excitement that we have as people for the fireworks and the loud bangs and sounds it is exactly what is terrifying to our pets. >> the humane society recommends pets have a collar with a phone number and microchipped with current information. they suggest keeping pets inside. another illegal fireworks bust to tell

you about coming out of the east bay. newark police saw two men selling fireworks out of a van and arrested them. there were 600 pounds of illegal explosives inside of the band and $33,000 in cash. a special team from the sheriff's office was called in to dispose of the fireworks. like most bay area communities fireworks are illegal in newark. we put together a list of events happening for the pay area for the 4th of july. head to our home page of our website for more. firefighters in contra costa county are mopping up a 35 acre fire there. it started as a vehicle fire not far from the concord pavilion. it is now 50% contained. the pass is closed from hess road to buchanan road. major fires are burning in northern california. crews work to get them under control we are learning about a number of

developing news out of northern california where firefighters are gaining ground on two wildfires. the fire burning just north of shasta lake. the and another one is creeping up the slopes of mount shasta. some places they can not reach the flames. the sheriff's office announce today did arrest 14 people earlier in the week for refusing to leave the evacuation area. this fire was sparked by a lightning strike. not nearly as big the salt fire has been more destructive wiping out more than two dozen homes in shasta county. it burned more than 9100 acres and still threatening a number of homes in the shasta lake area. this fire startestartestartestae

wednesday. >> vice president harris and second gentleman visited los angeles firefighters today to thank them for the service. it was a surprise visit to station 19. that is where the vice president and second gentleman have a home. they told the firefighters they have personally had to evacuate their home because of fires in the past. the vice president and second gentleman were joined by congressman ted lou and his wife and they brought the firefighters cookies from a local women-owned small business. just ahead, bay area communities have all kinds of traditions for the 4th of july. and, that includes one neighborhood where patriotism is on display with red, white and blue decorations. the heat makes a comeback, we take a live look outside. spencer christian is coming up next with your accu-weather forecast. the a's and red sox go down to the wire for a third straight day. hey, now, you're an all-star.

fairfield. it is breezy. that is assisting the advance of the low clouds pushing over the pay area right now as you can see looking from the camera westwood. some of the clouds, high, mid- level clouds, not interfering with the viewing of the fireworks tonight. 66 degrees in oakland, mountain view, san jose, lower 70s. 59 at half-moon bay. at the golden gate the clouds are not so low or dense as they appeared an hour ago. other temperature readings radioit now. lower 80s in concord and 74. here is the vow from the clouds looking down. you can see the fog stretching, the low clouds. and at the moment increasing before the fireworks begin tonight. mild to warm days lie ahead in the middle of this coming week. a wave of summer heat will be

likely developing by the end of the week. developing overnight. the animation, low clouds, spreading across the bay. inland, getting denser and deeper. lingering a little bit in the morning hours, bringing back to the coastline for the remainder of the day. we have a mainly sunny day over the bay and inland that is our pattern for some time. overnight temperatures, in the middle to upper 50s. tomorrow, look for highs down in the south bay. under sunny skies, ranging from upper 70s to 80s. about 78 at san jose. on the peninsula. mainly midto middle to upper 70s. topped out at redwood city. pacificca and half-moon bay; north bay high, sonoma, 81, farther north, 90 at clover dale. east bay high, 79. and inland east bay will have a range of middle to upper 80s for the most part. here is the accu-weather seven-
