making news at 6:00, fourth of july fireworks galore. the booms and blasts in the streets and overhead across the bay area. firefighters sharing the number of fires they had to put out. foggy fireworks once again in san francisco. although crowds are telling us how much it meant to gather again this year and the touching moment we caught on camera. let's take you outside outs this morning. the summer heat is heading our way. our 100 degrees in some spots. i'm just looking at how it's barely anybody on the road. >> nice. >> i'm not mad at it. >> are you looking at this mind us? isn't this nice? i like this color. i'm into it. a big cloud came right in front of the camera just as we -- i swear to you. a few seconds ago it looked

temperatures coast ast ast ast francisco. a sea of illegal fireworks. some of them professional grade filled the skies. >> here's the video. plenty of illegal activity across the oakland area. fireworks are visible despite the fog. pg&oh, caught this explosion. new this morning, we are waiting to find out what may have sparked a fire that burned dangerously close to homes in martinez. flames threatened homes in backyards just west of interstate 680. you can see the heavy smoke

coming from the brush. it's unclear if anyone was hurt or if there was any damage. the official cause under investigation. fire officials were on high alert. >> concerns of illegal fireworks intensified because of the extremely dry grass. cornell barnard live for us with new information about this. cornell. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. concord pavilion was the place to watch the professionals put on their fireworks shows. a lot of firefighters busy across the east bay responding to illegal fireworks. lots of fires as well. the illegal fireworks lit up the skies over pleasant hill and concord sunday. many sparked fires. the contra costa fire department spent weeks seizing hundreds of pounds of illegal fireworks if from people trying to sell them online. the city of concord decided to go all out, moving the show to the concord pavilion so people could see them.

>> hopefully in terms of pulling people out, people want to sit in their front yards and be able to watch. maybe they're not going to do something silly like blow off illegal fireworks. >> reporter: this morning the contra costa fire protection district responded to 48 grass and exterior fires and 5 structure fires last night. that was a 20 and 40% reduction from last year. the department was thanking everyone who helped by not using illegal fireworks and reporting fires when they saw them. nevertheless, it was a very busy night for firefighters. live in it concord, cornell barnard. there were numerous reports of illegal fireworks last night. our cameras captured a lot of activity. there will be some cleanup happening this morning after all of those fireworks. here's a look at san francisco's mission district last night. so this was at 25th and

harrison. people were lighting up roman candles in the intersection as you can see here and even we saw a car weave through fireworks trying to get through the street. another car backed up right next to the fireworks as a small crowd gathered and watched from the sidewalk. legal fireworks return to san francisco's water front on this fourth of july. and you could see the bottom half of some of the explosions. it's almost always foggy in the city during fourth of july. that go not stop people from celebrating and watching the fire works. the birth of our nation wasn't the only cause for celebration. one family shared this very special moment with abc 7 news. >> what the kids don't know is we are celebrating the color blue. red, white and blue and they're both going to be really big brothers. you're having a baby brother. >> that is wonderful. congratulations to that family. one of the busiest spots in san

francisco, fisherman's wharf where blankets were a popular item. this person sold out in about an hour. happening today, the tail end of the holiday weekend. travelers should be bracing for some busy airports. sfo taking a live look. expecting a big crowd the airport has surpassed the 40,000 passenger mark per day. hit a pandemic record on friday with tsa screening 2.1 million people. if you are flying today, you should get there early. a tsa staffing shortage is causing some long lines. aaa predicted 43 million americans hit the road for the holiday weekend and a lot of people are going to be coming home today. in the bay area aaa says highway 17 between los gatos and scotts valley is going to be the busiest stretch. experts predict that traffic

will be 340% more than normal. president biden says america is coming back together. he hosted more than 1000 military members, essential workers and their families for independence day. they had a barbecue on the south lawn and the crowd watched the fireworks display on the national mall. the president praised americans for making strides against covid-19. although the nation officially missed his goal of 70% of americans getting at least one vaccine dose by july 4th. we're at 67%. as far as fully vaccinated americans we're at 58%. vice president kamala harris and second gentleman visited some firefighters. this was a surprise visit where the vice president and second gentleman have a home. the group also brought firefighters some cookies from a local women-owned small business. back to what was happening at the white house. one of the people was an

the salt fire is burning north of shasta lake and. now containment has gone up to 52% in the lava fire. it scorched nearly 25,000 acres. it's creeping up the slopes of mount shasta. firefighters are running intoed rugged terrain. the siskiyou county sheriff's office announced 14 people have

been arrested now. a lightning strike sparked this fire. while this was not nearly as big, the salt fire has been more destructive. it's wiped out more than two dozen homes in shasta county. containment has edged up to 15% and it's burned more than 9000 acres. at this point it's threatening a number of homes in the shasta lake area. this fire started on wednesday. firefighters believe a spark from a vehicle on i-5 ignited it. inspectors in ocean city, maryland are trying to figure out what caused fourth of july fireworks to go off hours before the show. at first rescue crews thought it was a car fire. they soon discovered fireworks went off unexpectedly. employees of the fireworks company suffered minor injuries. ocean city ended up canceling all of its shows and safety inspections could take several days. here at home the fourth of july festivities in piedmont

had a new look. the annual parade and party in the park had to be canceled, so the city decided to instead take the parade to the neighborhoods. a line of cars made its way around town with a barrel house jazz band bringing the party spirit to the community. >> we're making lemonade out of lemons this year. we can't have the regular parade which is usually the biggest thing to hit piedmont every year. and it's so much fun. i didn't want to miss it. we're doing the best we can. we'll see what we've got. >> we've seen it for a lot of years. >> what's special about it? >> i really think it's just fun to see the old cars. >> yep. organizers are hoping that things will be back to normal next year. mark zuckerberg going viral with this video. the facebook ceo carried an american flag while riding what appears to be an electric hydrofoil surfboard. there's a sound track. it's john denver's "take me home country road." it has more than a million

san jose's joey chestnut is a winner. he ate a record breaking 76 hot dogs and buns at nathan's famous fourth of july hot dog eating contest. chestnut ended up breaking his own record eating those 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. this was in front of a crowd of 5000 fans at a minor league baseball stadium in brooklyn yesterday. michelle lesko won the women's competition. she ate only 30 and three quarters hot dogs. major league eater second ranked woman and managed to win despite not being able to do her digestion by jumping because she has a torn acl. way to hang in there. >> way to read that story. >> did i do well? i saw you both looking away the whole time. >> i've never wanted to see the mark zuckerberg video more than during the last 33 seconds. >> we love joey but, it is. >> sure.

particular job. the back story of this daredevil climbing up one of america's most recognizable buildings. good morning on this monday, july 5th. you're watching abc 7 mornings live on abc 7, hulu live and wherever you stream. we're going to start with the forecast. >> it's quite a morning out there. quite damp once again. and temperatures running in in the 50s. a little bit of fog. visibility down to one mile at half moon bay which means it's going to be lower than that in some areas along the coast if you have to drive there in the next couple of hours. 3 in petaluma. what you'll also notice is just how juicy the air is. lots of drizzle and mist falling still thanks to that on shore breeze gusting to 33 up in fairfield. so we've got a nice breeze today and temperatures that'll reach the low to mid60s from it the coast into san francisco. low to mid70s around the bay. 78 to 85 in the south bay. some upper 70s to low 80s in the north bay and mid to upper 80s our warmest spots in the

east bay. there was a heavy police presence in santa rosa for a possible shooting. this is near beachwood and greenwood drives. a car drove by and someone inside fired multiple shots into the crowd that was watching fireworks. no word on any injuries. in the east bay the kirker pass road in contra costa county is back open. a vehicle fire spread to grass around 1:30 yesterday. this was near nortonville road not too far from concord pavilion. cal fire and east bay regional parks helped firefighters contain the fire. the road was closed for several hours. illegal fireworks filled the sky in antioch. the city held a fourth of july celebration but that didn't stop people from setting off their own fireworks. there were bad traffic jams trying to get home from the city's official show downtown. some residents were blocking off streets to shoot their own fireworks. contra costa county fire

officials say they responded to more than 50s fires. a big problem during this drought but fewer than we saw last year. >> concerns were high because b of the dry grass. cornell barnard live with what crews were facing. concern big crowd last night for a fireworks show put on by the professionals. but it's the nonprofessional shows which had firefighters so busy overnight. but they say it could have been much worse. now illegal fireworks lit up the skies over concord and pleasant hill sunday. many sparked fires. the contra costa fire department spent weeks preparing for july 4th. seizing hundreds of pounds of illegal fireworks from people trying to sell them online. the city of concord decided to go all out moving the show so people around the east bay could see them. firefighters say combating illegal fireworks is not easy.

a special steal from the alameda county sheriff's office was called in to dispose of the fireworks safely. only safe and sane fireworks are allowed in newark and only up until july 4th. the bay area celebrated the fourth of july in american style. parades and picnics were largely back this year after the pandemic canceled so many of last year's events. hundreds of people came out to watch the parade in. in alameda, the uss hornet held a celebration. honoring fallen men and women who have served in the armed forces. >> kids having this experience means everything to us. learning about the history of the country. >> the people that have fought for our country and freedoms for us to be here. >> everyone we talked to says the holiday was a great time to get back together with friends and family after the last 15 months plus of staying away

from each other. president joe biden hosted the largest event of his presidency at the white house for the fourth of july. he touted the nation's progress in the fight against covid-19 but urged unvaccinated americans to get their shots. >> reporter: fireworks on the national mall celebrating independence day. a celebration at the white house marking progress in the nation's independence from the coronavirus. >> this year the fourth of july is a day of special celebration for we are emerging from the darkness of years. >> reporter: in the largest event of his administration, president biden hosting a barbecue for 1000 military families and essential workers. and honoring the more than 603,000 american lives lost to covid-19. >> to heal you have to remember.

we have to remember them. and we will. >> reporter: the event coming after the biden administration missed its goal of 70% of americans receiving at least one vaccine shot by july 4th. 67% of u.s. adults have had one dose and 58% are fully vaccinated. a new abc news washington post poll finds among those unvaccinated, 74% say they're unlikely to get a shot. >> my fellow americans it's the most patriotic thing you can do. in you haven't gotten vaccinated, do it now. >> reporter: the call to action all the more urgent with the highly contagious delta variant. accounting for more than 26% of new covid cases nationwide. >> we are seeing increases in cases in those areas in the country where there's lower vaccination rates. >> reporter: those concerns about the delta variant are

getting amplified as u.s. road and air travel reaches prepandemic levels. travel experts recommend driving home before 1:00 p.m. canada is easing some of its border restrictions after being closed for nearly 16 months. starting today canadians permanent residents in the international students and essential travelers who are fully vaccinated will not have to quarantine. they will have to take a test. the next stage of reopening could come as early as july 21st when the government evaluates how things are going. >> then we start reopening so americans and others who are fully vaccinated can come into canada will depend on how this goes. how we're able to keep canadians safe. >> there are no changes for people who are not vaccinated or partially vaccinated people. tourism and nonessential travel

developing news from surfside, florida. the part of the collapsed condo building that was still standing is now just a pile of rubble. crews demolished it overnight. now the difficult work of searching for victims can resume. crews are hopeful they'll be able to get to areas they haven't been able to get to yet. >> reporter: overnight crews demolishing the remaining structure of the partially collapsed condo building in surfside, florida. residents told to close their windows and stay inside as the demolition team uses a technique called energetic felling. the blast starting from the bottom of the structure and within seconds the building crumbled to the ground. appearing to fall away from

existing rubble where 121 people are still unaccounted for. >> gravity will pull it almost straight down but it'll have a little tilt to it where the material wants to stay away from the collapsed part so they can continue their recovery. >> reporter: officials deciding to bring the remaining structure down before any impacts from tropical storm elsa are felt. earlier sunday officials searched for any pets left in the building. >> as soon as the building is down and once the site is deemed secure, we will have our first responders back on the pile to immediately resume their work. >> reporter: this morning rescue workers acknowledging the odds of are dwindling. an experienced expert no longer believes there are any survivors under the rubble. >> the circumstances as we saw the last few days are too difficult for me to say professionally that i believe

student as chance to make up for poor grades after a tough school year. they have the option to make up the year. they can retake a grade. they ask for a low grades to be changed to pass-no pass or enroll in a fifth year school. csu accepts pass or no pass classes. special education in california has been underfunded for decades. now that's changing. the state budget approved last week includes $656 million for new funding for education. in march the state received $300 million in federal funding to help students with disabilities catch up after this year of distance learning. the funding is a game changer and school districts could consider how they will spend that money. a new report on children and pool safety warns the pandemic has put kids at an
