a car before that vehicle is used to break into a business in san francisco for the second time in just two weeks. a crime just continues to rise across the city. good evening, thanks for joining u i am dan ashley. >> i am deion lim. you are watching us live. there have been more than 3500 burglaries reported across san francisco so far this year. and it's causing 30 year veteran business owners to contemplate moving out. as i team reporter stephanie sierra found, the crime rates are declaring. >> reporter: it can happen within a blink of a eye. thousands of capital gone in seconds. >> they have a new technique of breaking in. >> reporter: for this man, it happened twice in two weeks. he and his wife have owned sherman market, that sits at union and franklin, for the past 30 years. >> every time we see a number on the phone, oh, my god, that's alarm company. >> reporter: just days ago, this person drove a car into

their business store front at 3:15 a.m. to break down the toward. the headlights visible through the glass. moments later, the door was pride open and the owner says the robber ran out with $10,000 worth of lottery scratchers. >> and then they backed up the car, and then they ram again door. >> reporter: they have $10,000 in repair costs. and they are out $20,000 worth of stolen merchandise. >> i have to check on the cameras to see if the door is there or not. it's really traumatizing for us. it's like we are suffering here. >> reporter: there have been more than 3500 burglaries reported across the city so far this year. and more than 1100 robberies like this viral video our team captured of a thief biking out with close to $1,000 of stolen merchandise at a walgreens. >> we are seeing robberies happen in heavily populated areas. a lot of people on the weekends, and at night, there's more traffic. >> reporter: sfpd deputy chief says they are working on increasing staffing as the

department is close to 400 officers short. and so are the case clearance rates. according to police data, the percentage of cases cleared indicating an arrest was made, for robberies, burglaries and arson, are between 4 to 6% below the figures reported this time last year. >> we are working on that portion now, but we definitely have a staffing shortage, and we have some work to do in that area. >> reporter: meantime, people like this couple hope for more incentive to curve the crimes. >> they know they can't be prosecuted in san francisco. >> reporter: after 30 plus years. >> it is seriously traumatizing for us. >> reporter: they don't have to continue living in fear. we reached out to sfpd for more comment and we will stay posted with updates. stephanie sierra, abc7 news. >> frustrating for them. hayward police say seven people committed more than 50 robberies in the nine counties

you see on the map. the suspects targeted starbucks, walgreens, cvs and rite aid and often passed notes to employees saying they had guns and demanded to see the safe. police worked with the fbi and the u.s. marshal's office to make the arrests. police in oakland are only now getting a reprieve in coming up for air after what the chief calls 12 hours of nonstop chaos last night. there was a massive side show mad by gunfire. several people were hurt when july 4th revelers shotguns into the air. the fire department is busy with multiple fires like this one behind me on telegraph that was spotted by a crew returning from a different fire. more on the mayhem from abc7 news reporter laura anthony. >> we are talking about 12 hours of nonstop chaos. >> reporter: oakland's police chief is not just talking about the illegal fireworks that rained down on the city. but rather, the reign of terror, violence that left at

least two people dead, and several others critically injured. >> my heart goes out to the families of the victims from last night. but celebratory gunfire led to the vast majority of these shootings. >> reporter: a woman is in grave condition from one of the shootings. while a man was left with critical injuries after being struck by a vehicle during the side show involving 300 cars. and the 16-year-old boy was hit in a head by a bullet from celebratory gunfire but is expected to survive. >> we came out prepared to address fireworks, as well as side show activity, the violence overtook all our resources. >> reporter: the oakland fire department also responded to numerous fires that in many cases were likely started by fireworks. oakland was not alone. here in contra costa county, the fire department responded to dozens of fires between 9:hundred and midnight, including one in this martinez neighborhood that threatened

dozens of homes. >> i was very upset about the whole thing. >> reporter: this man told us he confronted a group of young people setting off fireworks, just before the fires started. >> we had some rowdy neighbors shooting off fireworks close to the house, and this was a confrontation there. >> i feel like i was going to come down the hill, put the house on fire right there that's right here across the street from us, and then work waits this way. >> reporter: in all, contra costa firefighters tackled more than 50 other fires on the 4th of july. >> in our view, there's no such thing as safe or controllable fire work. certainly not in these conditions. we probably have the most dangerous fire conditions that we have had on independence day holiday weekend in many years. >> you can hear it all around us. >> reporter: in the east bay, laura anthony, abc7 news. meantime, a large late night fireworks party in santa rosa turned into a crime scene. now police are searching for whoever drove by the party and opened fire, killing one man

and injuring three others. the story from wayne friedman. >> reporter: the remains of a july fires works party all over the intersection at beachwood and greenwood drive and more crime scene tape in a trash can, and red circles denoting more than 20 shell casings. >> responding 36. >> reporter: when bullets flew, witnesses say they sound just like the fireworks, nobody wanted to put their face on television. >> i saw the car drive by. i saw the arm out of the car with the gun, and i saw the gunshots fired out of the car. >> reporter: it became a gun fight, shots fired from a silver honda and back into it. four people went down, including 35-year-old javier montes, his sister spoke with us off camera. >> all i know, is he was out here celebrating with some friends, and a car drove by, and started to shoot at him. >> reporter: last night homicide was the fifth in santa rosa this year. santa rosa police believe this was a gang related killing. they believe the victims were

targeted, gang violence has been a problem in the north bay all year long. >> it's been a violent last couple of months in particular with the increasing gun violence, as well as violent crime in general. >> reporter: there are many gang signs around town these days. including here on this street. by some estimates there, were 100 people at the party last night. so many that when police visited, they felt threatened and forced to retreat. it was that kind of july 4th very little backup. >> we had over 700 calls for service. that's more than double we normally have during a normal day. >> reporter: meantime, friends and family are lighting another candle here. that's little consolation for the loss of javier montes. >> because that's how we honor the dead here. >> reporter: in santa rosa wayne freedman abc7 news. to the south bay, our cameras captured a number of illegal fireworks displays last night. san jose fire department says early numbers show they responded to 20 fireworks related incidents in total.

the department says there were more than 1600 online reports since june 15th that's down from 6600 last year. so far, the department issued tennessee station and seized more than 550 pounds of fireworks. plus, fireworks are to blame for fire that damaged a pier along ambassador street in the hunters point neighborhood. crews attack the blaze from both the land and from fire boat number 3, no one was hurt in this incident about. and look at the fireworks confiscated just last night by san pablo police. officers say a 40% increase in calls for service yesterday is what they were dealing with as you heard. that happened in oakland and other places. police dedicated three teams just to deal with them. officers were able to seize about 500 pounds of illegal fireworks. fireworks may have caused this dog to run off in napa. the chp found him on state route 29 around 2:00 this morning. officers dropped him off at the napa animal shelter. they are hoping someone

recognizes him, since he didn't have a collar and was not chipped. the july 4th holiday typically cause as lot of pets to get scared, and lost. they often run off not fully understanding what's going on. freaks them out. abc7 news reporter dustin dorsey has more. >> reporter: as the bay area celebrated the first 4th of july following covid-19, local animal shelters were on high alert. look where this guy ran away and ended up at con fire station 84. more pets go miss on july 4th and 5th than any other day of the year. or so they thought in the peninsula. >> surprisingly enough, even though that, covid restrictions have been relaxed, there were a lot more parties, there were a lot more fireworks going on. inn san mateo county, we didn't see a huge increase in animals. >> reporter: the peninsula humane society spca saw four dogs and four cats at their intake center, compared to 20 to 25 each they normally have end up there over the 4th holiday. the same could be said for san

jose animal care services. their numbers are down 23% for dogs, and 55% for cats. >> we find this real encouraging there are less animals that have been separated from their owners that have come through the shelter. >> reporter: the question we immediately asked was why? beforey martin with the peninsula humane society said san mateo county sound like most locations, a war zone for fireworks. so what shifted? >> we primarily think it's just a lot more education on the part of shelters throughout the nation to remind people of ways to better help their animals deal with the stress of the july 4th activities. >> reporter: numbers may be down here at the shelter for now, but that doesn't mean bets are out of the woods quite wet. humane society volunteers are aware as pets can be reported missing in the days to come, a concern for pets and owners alike. >> the stress of your animal becoming separated from its family and home can be very, very challenging. and the stress on the humans, too. imagine if your cat or your dog or your rabbit got out, you

in the south bay, abc7 news was at a very messy scene this afternoon in santa clara. take a look at a water main that broke in the middle of the intersection of war burton and you can see the water gushing out and run rushing down the street. the surrounding streets are closed until crews can shut off the water and repair the break. let's turn to the pandemic. the delta variant is the dominant strain of covid-19 in california. it accounts for more than a third of all cases. that's a six fold increase from may. health officials say the rapid increase suggest the strain is more easily transmitted between people than others in the state. meanwhile, a new study out of israel says the pfizer vaccine is less effective at stopping the spread of the delta variant compared to previous strains of coronavirus. researchers say that the new data suggestion the vaccine is 64% effective at preventing effective. even so, the data indicates the

vaccine is 93% effective against serious illness and hospitalization. now to what's known as direct to consumer advertising. it's difficult not to see ads for all kind of prescription drugs to treat a variety of diseases. we looked into this because your health is part of our efforts to build a better bay area. researchers at uc and stanford along with the dr. patel are warning how marketing is having a big and not always healthy influence on the doctor, patient relationship. abc7 news reporter david louie has more. ♪ you are my sunshine. >> reporter: it's hard to miss them with the catchy jingles and lively messages. the government approved tv drug ads 24 years ago, and the impact is well documented. >> when there's more advertising, you see a correlation with a greater amount of filling the prescription of those drugs for senior citizens. >> reporter: professor feldman

water. and we saw that there was a little bit of struggle for him to stay afloat. that oil sheen turn out to be jet fuel. >> wow, thank goodness both pilots survived. ntsb investigators hope to recomfort on board computer of the plane to discomfort cause of the crash. new satellite images from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration showed tropical storm elsa making landfall today on cuba's south central coast, packing winds of of 60 miles an hour. people were evacuated ahead of the storm which is forecasted to hit florida next. they have expanded tropical storm warnings across the state, and, of course, spencer is tracking that storm for news and the winds really could be picking up again in this storm. it is possible as storm moves out over the warm trop cat waters of the gulf of mexico. let's show you where it is as it exits cuba. it's expected to stay on a track that will take it toward northwest, and then due northward over the next couple

days. as it skirts the west coast of florida, it could actually gain some strength out there over the tropical waters. it is expected to be a huge rainmaker for florida and much of the southeastern u.s. anywhere from 15 to about 20" of rain which could produce devastating flooding. we will keep ion on that. back here in the bay area, we have very, very calm weather just a breeze. nice onshore flow producing a surface wind up to 20, 25 miles per hour. and we have 28 mile per hour wind in san francisco right now. gusts to 26, at hayward. on with the live view from the emeryville camera, looking at clouds deep erin deeper near the coast and about to overrun san francisco. it's is currently 61 in the city. 66 at oakland. mountainview 72, 74 at san jose. and 59 at half moon bay. and from above the clouds from mount tam looking on the advancing marine layer. temperatures right now 67 at santa rosa. and napa 74, 85 at fairfield and that's the warm spot.

and 80 at concord and livermore. and the view from our roof top camera at abc7 showed blue skies an hour ago. but you can see the clouds are pushing out over the bay right now, and it's breezy on the embarcadero. these are the forecast featuresp low clouds, fog and drizzle in the overnight and early morning. mild to warm whether the next two days. a heat wave begins on thursday, it could take temperatures into the triple digit range by the end of the week. overnight, we will be looking at the advance of the marine layer pushing locally across the bay and inland. the patches of green represent areas where we spec to see patchy drizzle along the coast and out across the bay over on to the east bay. but by midday tomorrow n fact by mid morning, we will see the low clouds burning back to the coastline and giving us another mainly sunny day over the bay, and inland areas. overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. and highs tomorrow upper 50s at the coast, and upper 60s to low 70s around the bay shoreline. low to mid-80s inland.

but then things will start to heat up, significantly, on thursday. and high temperatures inland move into the upper 90s to low 100s. friday the same picture. we will so more location was with highs around or above 100 degrees on friday. and a similar picture on saturday, although one or two locations might -- i won't say cool down, but temperatures may drop just below 100 degrees. here's the accuweather seven- day forecast, and as you can see, we will have nice seasonal comfortable weather the next couple of days. but the warmup begins on thursday, and continues through the weekend. we could have three days of triple digit temperature readings or maybe more, but certainly through the weekend, and on monday, we expect the heat to ease a little bit. but even then, temperatures may be in the upper 90s inland. dan and dion. >> thanks. still ahead, the jaw dropping selfie dangling 1,000 feet above
