to be on the roads. we know the aaa has narrowed on highway 17. the corridor between san jose and santa cruz is the most congested. it will be about 340% more crowded than normal. >> fireworks, sideshows and celebratory gunfire. first responders in the east bay had their hands full last night. they did not respond to calls for firework enforcement because they were overwhelmed with 911 calls for other crimes. seven shooting investigations from last night and in one case a woman was critically injured and in another a 16-year-old was hit in the head by celebratory gunfire. another man was critically injured after he was hit by a car.

>> although we came out prepared to address fireworks as well as sideshow activity, the violence overtook all of our resources. >> firefighters responded to dozens of fires last night, many started by illegal fireworks. in martinez, a fire got dangerously close their homes. in san pablo police were busy cracking down on illegal fireworks there. the department saw a 40% increase in calls for service. police confiscated over 500 pounds of illegal fireworks. there was no city sponsored fireworks show because of the pandemic. fireworks are to blame for a fire the damage appear in the hunters point neighborhood. no injuries were reported. the cost of the damages not yet

known. britain plans to fully reopen in two weeks with no masks or 86% of adults have received the first vaccine dose. according to the cdc, 67% of americans have received at least one dose. three in 10 adults have not gotten a vaccine and definitely will not get one. 73% of that group leaves u.s. officials are exaggerating the risk of the delta variant. the delta variant is spreading across the country. there is a new version called delta plus. we spoke to infectious disease experts studying this variant and are concerned a booster shot might be needed. she joins us live from the newsroom. >> and just to give some perspective as to how fast

these variants are mutating. the delta variant is a variant of concern. and now we have cases of delta plus in the u.s.. >> accounting for nearly 36% of covid-19 cases in june across california is the delta variant. many have heard of it but have they heard about the new mutation? >> have you heard about the delta plus? >> reporter: these mutations are being studied by a doctor and his team. >> the delta variant has 18 different mutations. seven of them are in despite protein. the delta plus variant has an additional mutation in spike for some people are saying it is resulting in increased transmissibility. >> reporter: he met with close to 50 scientists to understand how the delta variant is

day of the year. >> surprisingly, even though the covid restrictions have been relaxed, there are more parties and fire workers going on. we did not see a huge increase of animals. >> reporter: the spca saw four dogs and four cats at their intake center compared to 20 to 25 each they normally have over the holiday. and the same could be said for san jose animal care services. >> we find this really encouraging that there are less animals separated from their owners. >> reporter: the question we asked was why? san mateo county sounded like most locations across the bay area, a war zone for fireworks. >> we think it is a lot more education on the part of shelters throughout the nation to remind people to better help their animals deal with the

continues to rise across san francisco. there have been more than 3500 burglaries across the city so far this is is is is stephanie sierra found out the arrest rates are already declining this year. >> reporter: it can happen within the blink of an eye. thousands of dollars of capital gone within seconds. it happened twice in two weeks. he and his wife have owned sherman market at union and franklin for the past 30 years. >> every time we see a number on the phone, we think it's the alarm company. >> reporter: this person drove their car to break down the door. the headlights were visible through the glass. moments later, the door was pried open and the person ran out with $10,000 of lottery
