his first shot to win it all. ♪ the edge, the edge, the edge ♪ good morning, america. on this tuesday morning, it is great to be here with robin and george. the band is back together. a lot of excitement around that, but there's also a lot of excitement around the nba finals. we've got a lot more on that coming up. boy, it's going to be a good one. we'll begin with tropical storm elsa. let's take a live look at key west right now, it's picking up right now. the storm's outer bands have hit parts of the state and overnight rescue cruise have been at the surfside condo collapse as tropical storm elsa closes in. >> george, ginger is there in florida for us, and she'll have the track and timing, but first, let's go to trevor ault who is there in key west for us. good morning to you, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. so, elsa is about 47 miles away from us but that has not spared us from the pouring rain and winds gusting up to 60 miles an

hour. we've been watching these increasingly aggressive waves crashing into the shore and spilling over the seawall. there are extensive concerns about flooding as florida is bracing for a long week ahead. this morning, tropical storm elsa drenching the keys as rain bands hit florida's mainland. a fierce gust of wind in sunny isles blowing this chair off a balcony sending it several stories below. the person who took the video saying the chair narrowly missed a woman. this storm's arrival on the heels of the fourth of july means it's hitting with thousands of tourists still in town. south florida residents taking precautions overnight. some already feeling the effects. >> just batten down the hatches and get ready. >> reporter: and while officials are urging residents to take necessary precautions -- >> make sure their boat is secure. make sure their patio furniture is all put away. get the last-minute supplies they need to get. >> reporter: near ft. myers, residents packing sandbags in preparation with many refusing to evacuate.

on monday, elsa made landfall in cuba battering the rural region with torrential rain and strong winds, rivers overflowing flooding fields and nearby towns. officials there evacuating 180,000 to higher ground after the storm killed three people in the caribbean. and some of the permanent residents of the florida keys can be a bit dismissive of storms this time of year, but officials are really urging everyone to find safe shelter especially people who live in houseboats or trailers. and when you look at the condition of the water, already this morning and it's expected to get worse, you can understand why the warnings are in place. robin? >> we want you and everyone to take care, trevor. thank you. we'll go to ginger in north redington beach in florida with the track and timing of the storm. good morning to you, ginger. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin.

you have the surf kicking up, but it looks like a fine morning until you realize there are storms brewing that things more than 200 miles away but these hotels while they look sleepy at this moment are chock-full of vacationers. this is a big vacation weekend. it's one of the main concerns we have as this thing moves north-northwest at 12 miles per hour right now. whipping key west as you saw in trevor's piece and it will keep moving north. naples, fort myers, you'll start to deteriorate later this afternoon. we're in a hurricane watch. all the way up through clearwater, sarasota, bradenton all on the lookout for tropical storm elsa. the worst of it will pass by late tonight through early tomorrow. so that's the timing and then you see it make it up to the florida/georgia state line, that's by tomorrow afternoon. it will cook and i'll show you where it goes next. in the meantime, impacts will be heavy rain and flash flooding could be a threat, tornadoes and then that push of water, especially in tampa bay. we saw yesterday dozens of people at one site picking up sandbags and they need it, because when they get a push of water and on top of it close to a half foot of rain you can have

significant flooding problems here, robin, so i'll track this and where it goes next coming up. >> we know that throughout the morning for us, ginger, thank you. michael? >> thank you, robin. tropical storm elsa is also threatening the search and rescue effort in surfside where conditions are deteriorating as crews search for survivors. victor oquendo is in florida with the latest. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. with the rest of the building demolished crews can now access every section of the collapse but now another challenge in their way, the weather. overnight, rescue crews in surfside pummeled by tropical storm elsa's outer bands amid thunderstorms and strong winds kicking up dust and debris. they continue their search for survivors in a newly expanded area. discovering four more bodies hours after demolishing the part of the champlain towers left standing. clearing the way to safely reach spots that were previously inaccessible. >> the dangerous situation where debris could fall down is now eliminated. so we're operating at 100%

capacity. >> reporter: it's a race against time to find the 117 still unaccounted for and the work is round the clock. these new images of teams meeting in their control room. more than 4.8 million pounds of concrete removed so far. remnants of the lives shattered by the collapse. for those who made it out alive some now homeless. all of their belongings gone. >> i lost everything. i lost everything. the people that survive, we have to start again our life from zero. >> reporter: many families still in that agonizing wait for word like ashley dean's sister who was on the phone with her husband when the building collapsed and is still missing. >> i would wait forever to be with you and to reunite with you and then i'm holding out every bit of hope. >> reporter: this tragedy now prompting a sweep of similar condos across miami-dade county and so far two buildings have been deemed unsafe. residents, hundreds forced to evacuate.

george? >> okay, victor, thanks very much. we're going to go to washington now where president biden is set to pete with his covid response team as the vaccination effort hits a wall and the delta variant spreads among the unvaccinated. on july 4th the president cited progress against the virus but also sounded a cautionary note. >> we are closer than ever to declaring our independence from a deadly virus. that's not to say the battle against covid-19 is over. >> chief white house correspondent cecilia vega has the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. president biden is saying that getting a vaccine is really the most patriotic thing an american can do right now. that event he held here over the weekend at the white house, it was the largest event of his presidency, a thousand people here, military members, first responders, but you said it. he's striking a cautionary note and he's walking a fine line on this one. he wants to show the progress that's been made in this fight against covid but he and his team are acknowledging this july 4th holiday wasn't exactly what they hoped it would be.

they really wanted it to be the breakthrough moment of the summer where they could declare freedom from the virus where restrictions could be lifted as americans hit the 70% vaccination rate. america is falling slightly short of that. it's at 67% vaccinated right now. today we're going to hear from the president again. he will emphasize, of course, this need for vaccinations, he's really going to focus on economic investment efforts he wants to see done. he said he's not necessarily concerned about a major outbreak around the country going forward, but, george, he is really concerned about lives being lost. we've got to say hundreds of people are still dying from the virus every day. that delta variant is a major concern right now. >> magnified by the new study that suggests the vaccines may not be as effective against the delta variant. >> reporter: that's the concern at home, george, those who still have not been vaccinated. look at our new poll, why it's so concerning, three in ten adults say that they have yet to get a vaccine and probably or definitely will not

get one and then take a look at this. 70% of those folks say they think officials here in the states are exaggerating the risks of the delta variant at so seems to be stalled at this point and that's causing concern for the white house officials. >> cecilia vega, thanks very much. robin? now to the latest on pope francis, recovering this morning following his scheduled surgery. the vatican saying he is in good condition. amy robach is in vatican city with the latest. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, robin. that's right. this is the second morning pope francis has woken up at the gemelli hospital here in rome and, yes, we have some positive news to pass along to you. we've just learned the pope had a well-rested night's sleep so certainly that's good to hear but perhaps the best news of all the routine follow-up examinations by doctors today showed that pope francis is in good condition. this morning, pope francis remains at rome's gemelli hospital, the vatican saying the 84-year-old pontiff is in good condition breathing on his own. this following what officials call a scheduled surgery on

sunday. the holy see office releasing a statement saying the pope is expected to remain in the hospital for seven days barring any complications. a well-informed source telling italian news agency ansa that pope francis was in good spirits even joking with doctors after he woke up from surgery. >> i think people realize it's probably a minor thing in the grand scheme of things and he should be able to recover just fine. >> reporter: according to the vatican, the pope is being treated for diverticulitis, a condition where small bulging pouches along the digestive tract become inflamed or infected which can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating. the vatican says the pope's procedure lasted three hours, surgeons removing the left side of the colon. >> removal of that segment should allow him to be relieved of his chronic symptoms and have a normal perfect healthy routine for the rest of his life.

he was the head pro here who was killed in broad daylight. the truck -- or the tracks of the truck that the killer was in just beyond that memorial. the hunt for that killer continues. this morning, an urgent manhunt for a suspect believed to have murdered three people including lling a golf pro at this country club outside atlanta saturday. police say they were dispatched to the pine tree country club just before 2:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. >> a white pickup truck drove on to the putting green. shots were fired and now there's a man laying on the ground. >> reporter: investigators finding that truck trapped on the green of the 10th hole and golf pro eugene siller dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. the suspect fled the scene and remains at large. >> he believes that the shooter had a white shirt on, possibly a dark-skinned hispanic male. >> reporter: siller's friend and pastor rand ebberhard believes when the golf pro saw the truck drive out on the course he approached it to help out. >> he didn't go up there demanding justice with intensity.

we all knew and were confident that he was offering a hand. >> reporter: police discovering two other victims in the bed of the pickup truck. the truck's registered owner paul pierson and another unidentified male both with gunshot wounds. the country club president telling abc news siller, who was a pine tree employee for two years, was out working on the course the day of the shooting and that the car's owner had no connection to the country club. siller would have turned 47 wednesday. he leaves behind a wife and two young boys. this is a heavily populated area. kennesaw state university is just through the woods here. there are plenty of houses along the golf course. authorities are asking residents here to check their doorbell cameras for any sign of that suspect who does remain at large, george? >> okay, will, thanks very much. what a sad and strange story. michael? >> it sure is. we're going to switch gears now to game one of the nba finals. it is tipping off tonight with

george. right now we're going to get to britney spears. reports overnight that her longtime manager larry rudolph is resigning because britney plans on retiring. the latest twist since her testimony in the conservatorship and kaylee hartung has the story. hey, kaylee. >> reporter: hey, george, britney made it very clear when she unleashed to a judge she wants her life back and she wants this conservatorship that she feels is abusive ended and court proceedings will take time to do that, but very quickly we are seeing the system that controls her life unraveling. overnight, reports that britney spears' longtime manager is resigning, larry rudolph, who's been britney spears' manager for over two decades. ♪ writing a letter obtained by "variety" and "deadline" to the conservatorship saying, britney has expressed her intention to officially retire adding that he wishes britney health an happiness and i'll be there for her if she ever needs me again just as i always have been. rudolph, who has not legally been part of the

conservatorship, has been by her side since it began in 2008, speaking out in this interview. >> britney is a smart person. she's an introspective person, she's somebody who understands a lot more than people give her credit for. >> reporter: this development, one of the latest since britney's bombshell statement in court two weeks ago, the 39-year-old asking the conservatorship be terminated saying she's been isolated, exploited and demoralized by the conservatorship that's controlled her life and finances for the last 13 years. after that statement bessemer trust, the company hired by the conservators to manage spears' finances also resigning. in a new article in "the new yorker," ronan farrow and jia tolentino revealing hours before that court appearance, the pop star called 911 to report she was a victim of conservatorship abuse. the authors speaking to "gma" monday about the call. >> this appears to be a new escalation in the case. she, it seems, wanted to create a legal record of that

michael jaramillo and left his older brother david in critical condition. >> i need an ambulance strike team right now to adventureland. this is code 3. please respond to adventureland. >> reporter: the ride shut down as officials try to determine what went so terribly wrong. saturday, the jaramillos visited adventureland park to celebrate david's upcoming birthday. six family members boarding the raging river ride but shortly after the unthinkable. >> we've got a total of three patients, actually two cpr in progress right now. >> reporter: the raft capsizing flipping the family into the water. what do you remember about saturday? >> when it flipped over, all of us were trapped in the seats and seat belts. i see the silhouettes of my sons trying to grab each other, grab us. they wanted us to help them. we couldn't do it. >> reporter: michael and two other children, including his

older brother david, rushed to the hospital. michael did not survive. david is still in a medically induced coma. an attorney for adventureland park telling abc news the raging river ride has been in operation for nearly four decades. it is a safe ride. the ride was inspected by the state of iowa the day before the incident and was in good working order. but it's not the first deadly accident involving the same ride. "the des moines register" reporting in 2016 a staff member was killed after falling while helping guests onto their rafts. the park fined $4,500 by iowa's occupational safety and health administration after the incident. the jaramillos now praying for david's recovery and remembering michael as a kind, caring, fun-loving young boy. >> i feel like adventureland robbed me of my baby. i'll never get a chance to see him grow up. >> reporter: just heartbreaking and the park says an

all going to see it by this afternoon. tonight really is the worst for tampa bay as the tide comes between 8:00 and 9:00. we'll also see the surge of three to five feet. you see the timing here, it makes landfall sometime early tomorrow morning north of tampa and between that and the big bend, something like a cedar key or just south of there. three to five feet of surge there down to one to three feet if you're in key west or up the coast there and i want to mention it doesn't stop. of course, it moves through the southeast and there will be heavy rains even in south georgia or south carolina, charleston in tropical storm watch, and eventually elsa tries to reform off the jersey coast and impact parts of the northeast and new england and i will be tracking all of this. for now we head back to you. >> that's a lot to keep track of, ginger. we know you got it covered. thank you so much. that tropical storm is also threatening the rescue effort in surfside as crews search for survivors. victor oquendo is in florida with the latest. welcome back, victor. >> reporter: yep, good morning, michael. crews are now able to work in an

expanded area with the rest of the building demolished but they have to do it in some rough weather. take a look. tropical storm elsa's outer bands pummeling crews monday night amid thunderstorms and strong winds kicking up dust and debris, they continue their search for survivors discovering four more bodies hours after demolishing the part of the champlain towers south left standing. more than 4.8 million pounds of concrete have been removed so far. remnants of the lives shattered by the collapse. for the residents who made it out alive many are now homeless as loved ones of those still missing continue waiting for word nearly two weeks later. this tragedy has prompted a sweep of similar condos across miami-dade county and so far two buildings have been deemed unsafe, hundreds of residents forced to evacuate. robin? >> all right, victor, thank you. we have a new study linking teens drinking sugar-sweetened beverages with early onset colorectal cancer and rates are climbing in people under 50 and

dr. jen ashton is here to explain this to us. what is this all about? >> it is about the why. we've been following rates going up in young people under the age of 50. this study done in 41,000 nurses and followed them into the future really wanted to ask the question, why is this rate going up and does it have to do with something that people are doing in particular drinking? so take a look at what the study found. they looked at over 41,000 women. they followed their beverage consumption habits from teenage adolescence through young adulthood and they found that the women who drank two or more sugar sweetened beverages a day had more than twice the colorectal cancer risk at an early age. and, robin, this is the alarming one, with each additional sugar sweetened beverage a day that rate jumped by about 32%. so, again, this is based on association, not cause and effect, but potentially there is something here. >> so give us the reason why and the types of these sugar-based

drinks. >> here's the good news. we are not, underscore, not talking about natural fruits or vegetables. we're only talking about things with added sugar. sports drinks, teas, things like lemonade, obviously colas or sodas, anything for which added sugar is in there and when you talk about prevention, the hallmark of colorectal cancer, i don't care what age, is diet. so you want to get as much fiber, as low red meat, and then again things that you can control, keeping your weight in a healthy range, minimizing or moderate alcohol consumption, not smoking and exercising all really important not just for colorectal cancer but all types of cancer. >> it is on the rise. >> yeah, that was the key. they were trying to figure out why and is it something in our behavior because, again, there's a lot in medicine and our medical destiny we can't control. potentially this is something we can control. >> hopefully so. i know you'll have much more on "gma3." >> you got it. >> jen, thank you. michael? coming up, gwen stefani and blake shelton are married. tying the knot in the surprise ceremony. what we know about the wedding.

chicken. it's it could be any parts you like. i chose thighs because they're good and i take the skin off because that skin is fattening. take the skin off and you brown the chicken. can i show you? >> sure, please. >> okay. so this chicken has already been browned on both sides for like five minutes. then i will add the trinity. >> trinity? >> the carrots and the green peppers, celery, habanero pepper if you like it hot. i like it hot but you might not so you don't have to add that. and so you cook these for like ten minutes or 15 minutes and then after they're soft enough or whatever -- they can stay firm because the chicken dish is going to cook like 45 minutes or a little longer. after these are -- whoo.

then you add the chicken. not with your fingers but i'm it today like this. pretend they're done. done enough to add the chicken. you add the chicken and then you add -- before you do the chicken you rub it with the chicken broth. you need no salt for this because the chicken broth is salty. i have garlic, celery seed, black pepper and this hot, hot habanero that might hurt somebody, so i will put half of this in and the fresh garlic. i'll put this in and then here's the celery seed and black pepper. and you know what, robin, as i go, i add stuff. i'm one of those people. i don't cook anything the same way twice. this is how this goes and then you add three cups of water,

here's one. and you add two more cups of water and then you put the top on. okay. i don't want to mess up this shirt. watch it, shirt. so do that, okay. and as this is cooking, i on the side i make my flour. i whisk it until it's no lumps and after this is 45 minutes and check it. then you add the flour, water, the gravy. hush. what's wrong with me today? add the gravy and then minutes after that look again. then probably like 20 minutes after that it's done because the thighs were already cooked a bit beore i put them in the pan. i'm nervous today, robin, i'm nervous. >> what are you nervous about? >> this is my -- this is my 20th year anniversary of this great book and it's so much fun talking with you guys because i love you all but i'm nervous and anyway, there's three new recipes in the book. there are pictures, new

time around as well. no caffeine for three months. tough? >> yeah. it made me -- the reason i did it was to figure out what is our relationship to this plant. why is it so important to us? and what i found is i am, indeed, addicted. that's not necessarily a bad thing. but my relationship to caffeine like 90% of us was kind of essential to the formation of my personality. my ego. >> yeah, but you didn't actually drink all that much coffee. you were drinking a half caf each day before you gave up caffeine, yet you still found yourself addicted to it? >> yeah. when i got off it, i just didn't feel myself for three months and what that told me is that myself is caffeinated. my default consciousness is caffeinated. >> so when you started drinking coffee again, did you notice a change or did you just go back to normal? >> well, that first cup after three months is a revelation, i mean, of just how powerful this drug is. i just felt these waves of euphoria. i mean, it's worth getting off just to get back on.

it's almost psychedelic, the power of caffeine. >> well, the way you make it -- >> i was happy to get back on. i was sad to lose that sense of power. so for awhile i only had caffeine once a week on saturdays and i would look forward to saturdays and i would get so much done. >> but you say it's very addictive. the way you talk about it makes it seem incredibly addictive and the way most of us drink coffee it kind of proves the point. but it also sounds like you're saying it's not necessarily a harmful addiction? >> we tend to moralize addiction. we figure you're a failure or weak in some way but every culture on earth has some plant that they use to change consciousness. it just seems to be a deep human desire and i looked deeply into the health effects of caffeine and there's really only one thing to worry about. in general caffeine is protective against many kinds of cancer, against parkinson's disease, against cardiovascular disease. it's good for you in many ways. the only thing is if you drink
