carolinas, the mid-atlantic and eventually to ned. overnight elsa turning deadly after the tropical storm spawned this tornado in florida. >> there's a tornado right ucng down along a highway in jacksonville where the damage is described as widespread. police say a falling tree killed a driver as heavy rain and wind hit the city. >> this poor gentleman was just driving, probably heading home and tree came down and hit his car. >> reporter: another large tree slamming into an apartment building. this man was looking out his window when the winds picked up. >> all of a sudden i see my chairs pick up and go to the right and then all of a sudden they went to the left about five seconds later and everything starting going to the left. i heard a train which they say you always a train. i heard the train. >> reporter: hours later : elsa producing another tornado in southeast georgia touching

down at a campground on a naval base. >> it is utter chaos over here right now. >> reporter: the winds flipping over and tearing apart large rvs. >> pickup trucks flipped over. debris everywhere. trailers knocked over. >> reporter: at least ten people from the campsite were taken to the hospital. according to the navy there appears to be damage to buildings on the base, but a spokesperson confirms there is no damage to the submarines stored at the base. meanwhile, the cleanup is already under way along florida's west coast where elsa made landfall wednesday. bringing powerful storm surge and inundating coastal roads. elsa will bring heavy rain to the carolinas before moving into the northeast. we'll take a closer look at the forecast in just a few moments. breaking overnight, several suspects accused of assassinating the president of haiti have reportedly been killed or arrested. the wife of the slain president has arrived in florida as we learn more about how the assassination was carried out and what's next with so many implications for the u.s.

abc's elizabeth schulze is on top of it as always. she has the latest. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, zohreen. well, haitian police say suspects in the president's assassination were killed during a reported gun battle, and officers being held hostage were freed. this morning, haiti's police chief says four suspects in the assassination of president jovenel moise have been killed. and two others arrested. the alleged assassins have yet to be identified as haiti's acting prime minister urges calm. >> we need every single one to actually move the country forward while sitting for justice for president jovenel moise. >> reporter: the caribbean nation plunging deeper into crisis after assailants stormed s residence eaolheadf ste an h . receive treatment. now fighting for her life.

>> the people are devastated. haiti is in mourning. >> reporter: the haitian ambassador to the united states says the attack was cared out by armed commandos speaking spanish and masquerading as drug enforcement agents. the remains of the president removed overnight. in the nation long gripped with turmoil and political unrest, a state of siege. the international airport shut down and border with the dominican republic closed. busy capital streets emptied out. >> i think a lot of us are kind of almost and myself included, we're waiting for the fireworks. we don't want them. we don't want the violence. >> reporter: in washington president biden condemning the assassination. >> it's just -- it's very worrisome about the state of haiti. >> reporter: u.s. secretary of state antony blinken called haiti's interim prime minister late wednesday extending his condolences and vowing to

support the haitian government and its people. andrew. >> elizabeth, thank you. the delta variant of the coronavirus is surging across several states. hospitals in missouri are now seeing their highe of nscehe neighboring arkansas just reported its largest daily increase in covid infections since february. federal surge teams are being sent to hot spots but doctors insist the best defense is simple, get vaccinated. >> most important are not really the number of cases because covid is going to be around forever, but it's the hospitalization rate, it's the death rate that we really need to pay attention to, and we're seeing that largely in the unvaccinated population. what we do know is that vaccines are effective against it. >> reporter: in houston, cases of the delta variant have nearly doubled in the last week and cases are six times higher than in may. police outside of minneapolis are searching for a

light-colored suv that may have been involved in a road rage shooting that left a youth baseball coach dead. investigators believe the driver of the suv shot at the coach's car as the two drove down the highway. the coach's car went off the road crashing into a parking lot. police believe some sort of altercation led to the gunfire. in chicago, three officers are recovering after being shot on duty. two atf agents and a police officer came under fire while working undercover. police are questioning a person of interest, local officials are demanding federal help. they spay local law enforcement is outmanned and outgunned by gangs. >> we have 100,000 gang members in the city of chicago right now. they're all armed. they're emboldened. they have absolutely no fear, no respect for life. no respect for the communities that they come from. >> reporter: 36 chicago police officers have been shot or shot at so far this year. now to surfside, florida, where there's a new mission this morning, exactly two weeks after that tragic condo collapse.

this morning crews at the site of the condo building collapse in surfside are no longer searching for signs of life. some of the rescuers in tears last night holding a moment of silence as they mark the end of their search efforts. >> it is with deep profound sadness that we made the extremely difficult decision to transition from operation search and rescue to recovery. >> reporter: for 14 consecutive days the crews battling brutal conditions including fires and storms as they search for survivors in air pockets only to find remains but no survivors. officials say they based the decision to end the search effort on a number of factor. >> these engineering factors include, you know, the building collapse itself, the pancake which is -- gives you the lowest probability of survivability.

you know, coupled with the fact that it gives you very little voids. >> reporter: an additional 18 victims were recovered in surfside wednesday bringing the death toll to 54. the mayor says another 86 people are potentially still unaccounted for. those who survived the tragedy are now starting from scratch. >> so this is your bedroom now. >> that's my bedroom. >> reporter: 82-year-old zulia taub is living in a friend's apartment. her home of 22 years and all her belongings are gone. >> i came out with the pajama and a housecoat. >> that's it. >> my purse. >> reporter: meanwhile, authorities are officially launching a grand jury investigation into the cause of the collapse. former president trump has filed lawsuits against facebook, twitter and google. he claims his first amendment rights were violated when his social media accounts were suspended. legal experts say the lawsuits are meritless because private companies are not bound by the first amendment. time now for a look at your thursday weather.

good morning. we're tracking elsa this morning moving up the southeast u.s. coast. it's going to bring some tropical storm force wind and rain with it and check out the path. it's going to hit new york city on friday morning, boston eventually by friday afternoon. this is going to take a couple of days to go up the coast and look at all the wind we're going to see. 40 to 60-mile-an-hour gusts from charleston, south carolina, all the way up to the gulf of maine. also two to four inches of rain around boston and ocean city, maryland. i'm accuweather meteorologist kevin coskren. all right, coming up, why millions of americans are being told to empty the bird feeders in their yard. but first what we're learning about this stunning scene. someone throwing a lit firework into a car setting off an explosion. and later the man who found $1 million while cleaning his house.

bird found sick or dying. including song birds. and blue jays. this blue jay found sick in the washington d.c. area. experiencing neurological systems. eye discharge and swelling. affecting birds in ten states. indiana, trying to find the cause ruled out the bird flu. and west nile. in pennsylvania, some question whether pesticide or cicadas could be to blame. >> we are testing for the pesticides used for cicada control. kp also testing for fun gal toxin. >> until the cause is discovered, people can help prevent birds from congregating. take down your bird feeder and cleaning them and your birdbath with a 10% bleach solution. >> the reason for it is because we want birds to socially distance naturally. they don't have that know how that that's not okay for them.
