5:00 pm
feel real relief. ask your rheumatologist about cosentyx. now, from abc7, live breaking news. good evening. thanks for joining us. >> you are watching abc7 news at 5:00, live here on abc7, hulu live, and wherever you happen to stream. we continue to breaking news coverage of the 5.9 earthquake near smith valley, nevada, which could be felt all across the region, including here in the bay area. >> it happened around 3:50, more than an hour ago. again, this is south of lake tahoe, just east of the california/nevada border. let's give you a look at our seismograph. here you go. here is a visual reflection of n the shaking. several aftershocks followed right after, and at this point,
5:01 pm
we have counted at least 18. probably more from a few minutes ago when i last looked here to have been no reports of injuries or damage. a lot of those aftershocks were in the 3, 3.5 range, a few of the 2s, one that was a 4.4, a little bigger. there were a whole lot of them, and earthquake twitter was quickly trending, with many people reporting feeling the quake all the way in the bay area hundreds of miles west of the epicenter. >> lots of comments coming in, lots of tweets. one man in daly city tweeted this video and you could see his light fixture there swinging back and forth, and on abc7 news at 4:00, we spoke to sally rosen. she owns a restaurant and walker in mono county close to the nevada border. she said that she ran out of the house to check on her restaurant. >> cups and things all fell off the shelf. we had a lot of oil splatter from the fires and
5:02 pm
from our waste bins, so we're going to have to clean that up, and we're still right now cleaning up things fallen from the fridges and the freezers, falling out, breaking on floor. so, quite a mess in addition to being quite scary. we are definitely still feeling those aftershocks, so that's pretty unsettling because you never know what will happen. but we just had our big fire here in november. we lost our house, so i think a lot of people are still pretty shaken from unpredictable-s of the environment we're in right now. >> and caltrans in on the california/nevada border told us there have been reports of rockslides. you heard christine knadler with caltrans telling us about rockslides on 395 and state route 89 and even in 88 in the northern mono county following the earthquake that they are
5:03 pm
trying to check out right now. sometimes, people are being turned around to find an alternate route because of those rockslides blocking the roadway. the state's office of emergency services though says they are monitoring the situation. >> we also got this video . wow, from our newsroom. this is coming from a resident of murphy , california, near the stanislaus national forest where they felt shaking today. thevideo coming from coming fro surveillance camera from the garage. it flips the camera over during the quake at one point, but certainly shocking to see. >> that is in the foothills of the sierra nevada mountains, which felt this earthquake so deeply. kevin poulin were, a spokesperson for lake tahoe ski resorts, spoke to us right after the quake hit his home in tahoe city, and he told us it was the biggest jolt he has ever felt up there. >>
5:04 pm
took about two to three seconds, and then the second jolt came through, so an impressive hit for tahoe. the other piece of this is that was a significant jolt looking out over the lake, and we actually saw a roller go from the north to the south of the interstate. you might've caught a good ways. >> oh. >> quite a dramatic visual there, a surfboard on the lake. you can imagine, the magnitude of this earthquake, felt all over the place. >> awesome, big waves in the lake there. let's bring in abc7 meteorologist sandhya patel. >> there were multiple reports, aftershocks after the 5.9 earthquake as well. let me show you the latest information that i have on the earthquakes near walker. let's get you in closer here. as you will notice, at 3:49, it was magnitude 5.9 earthquake, depth of 6 miles. when you take a look at this vicinity, there were 51 reports with a maximum magnitude of 5.9 . just taking a look at
5:05 pm
information from dr. lucy jones, who obviously is very familiar with this stuff. she is saying the 5.9 is a classic, normal faulting earthquake. i am quoting her. it is common in this region and not uncommon to see those aftershocks, so let's take a look at the shaking intensity, how far it was felt. i certainly felt the jolt here in the station in san francisco, and you can see it was felt for miles. as a matter of fact, from the california/nevada border, all the way towards the bay area. i'm going to stop this here and just show you exactly how far in terms of mileage. let's take a look here. when you take a look at the earthquakes and how far it was felt, a good 146 miles away from the actual center, the epicenter. it was a 5.9 earthquake at 3:49, once again. that was the largest of the series. there were 51 reports are the largest one was 5.9 and we continue to see aftershocks as well. the latest one coming down as
5:06 pm
4.5. that is south-southwest of colville, california, so we're not done yet. the shake intensity as to how far it was felt, all the way up toward chico, south toward south east towards fresno, stockton, modesto back here in the bay area, vallejo, part of the east bay, san francisco feeling this earthquake
5:07 pm
>> 4:58, 4.0 magnitude, depth of 5 miles. this there is a cluster of reports.
5:08 pm
4:13, 3.5, and it was a depth of minus 1. 6 miles, so, we're going to continue to see this. the shaking intensity, showing you that this was felt for miles from the epicenter, all the way out towards the bay area, north toward chico, south east towards fresno. this was felt, obviously, by others around the state. this was a sizable earthquake, and in case you are wondering, what is of five.9? a five is a moderate earthquake. some property damage is expected, and when you look at this, about 1500 per year is what we expect. a6 is strong. we're talking property damage likely five and six. 5.9 was the largest, so obviously, not surprising if we do see this. about 120 of these per year. the energy equivalent is 33 million pounds of exposure .
5:09 pm
intense earthquake indy. >> sandhya, i want to get back to the aftershocks because we have our executive producer heather county for us, try to keep track as they keep coming in, and the last one was felt just about five minutes ago or less, and she counted 23 aftershocks, so certainly not out of the usual in a situation such as this. speaking of the seismologist, sandhya, that you mentioned, lucy jones, she tweeted moments ago, and we want to share that with you , if we could pull it up on our screen to convey. she says this magnitude, 5.9, this afternoon is a classic normal faulting earthquake for eastern california, as is common in this region. there are a lot of aftershocks, 10 about 92 3 in the first hour, so this is on point with what you are saying, sandhya, as to what is normal for what we can expect to feel in this moderate category, and those aftershocks. we've counted over 20 as of now. >> absolutely.
5:10 pm
dion, when we take a look at this graphic, you will see what happens. the largest magnitude was at 3:49. i know some of us felt that. the depth was six miles, magnitude was 5.9. i'm going to go to the next graphic, which shows you there were 58 reports with the largest one a 5.9. let's query this information live on air while we are here, and you will notice that 4:13, there was a 3.5 magnitude aftershock, 4:11, 3.6. 4:58, it was a 4.0. let's go in tighter here, and i mean, just numerous reports of earthquakes here, the aftershocks, i should say. there was another one at 4:25 of 3.0, suggest a cluster of activity in that area. continuing to monitor this situation. the latest from the usgs is showing 4.0 northwest of bridgeport. there was a 3.7
5:11 pm
markleeville. these are all in the same general vicinity, and when we take a look at this map here, and in case you are wondering, it is like how fait really felt? you look at the epicenter, and you look back toward san francisco . i know i certainly felt it, and it was about 158 miles from the epicenter, so it was definitely felt across a large swath. i'm going to show you exactly what areas felt it. it was felt all the way up to the sacramento valley, also the san joaquin valley, and out toward the bay area. once again, a five to six is a moderate to strong earthquake, and this is concerning. we're seeing a lot of the aftershocks in this situation here, but we're hoping that was the strongest of it, and the ones that follow will continue to remain below that 5.9. so far, looking at the usgs. they have been under 5.9. the largest has been 5.9. >> sandhya, a couple of points. one, we know there have now been 25 , so more aftershocks
5:12 pm
have happened since he presented that information, and dr. lisi jones, that has been putting out great information now with caltech, a longtime geologist, automated system he said automatic systems that locate quick sometimes get confused. initially, people were reporting it as one in smith valley, 1.9, and a 4.8 in farmington near the san joaquin county area. now, they have taken the one from stockton county away. cheez-it automatic systems do get confused, especially since there are very few stations in that area, right? and we talked about that, how the sensors there, they kind of read that as two separate events web pages get updated when those mistakes are corrected, so if you look now, no matter earthquake near stockton, vote don't tell the folks there. they felt the shaking there, but it all resonated from the
5:13 pm
smith valley event, which is a 5.9. >> what you take a look at the latest earthquake information and even right now, the graphic, you will notice there are multiple reports of earthquakes. initially, when i sent it out on social media, it was breaking news. multiple reports of earthquakes, and when i queried this, there was one on the usgs website of 4.8 near farmington. obviously, the one near walker. we had multiple reports . there was one near tioga pass that was 4.8, so some of these earthquakes were in that general vicinity, in that area, that triangle, if you will, so it was really happening at that moment, and we were taking a look at the latest information. but once again, we bring you down to where the latest earthquake was, and the 5.9 magnitude was at 3:49 near walker, california, near the nevada border. 62 reports now. this is updating as we speak. maximum magnitude, 5.9, but we are talking about 62, so even
5:14 pm
though the largest was 5.9, this is going to continue to update. there have been multiple reports of the aftershocks. this is just the largest one, and when you take a look at the shake intensity, i'm going to pull this camera out a little bit so you can see how far this is stretching, the shake intensity map here and you will notice it was felt all the way to visalia, all the way up toward chico, reno, susanville here or there were some reports out toward the monterey, southern monterey, san benito county area. we are looking at some of these regions here, and it was quite a stretch here that we're talking about that felt it, so it was not just here in the bay area. it was felt quite a distance, and once again, showing you that nap. you can see how far reaching that large earthquake was, the 5.9, and that is considered a sizable earthquake, moderate to strong. some property damage to damage likely when you are between a five and six, and i think this is just a reminder to all of us
5:15 pm
to have our earthquake bags ready. go to abc7news.com. we have information on how you can prepare for earthquakes. we live in earthquake country . we have heard this before, and anyone who lived through, and i know many of us did, that '89 earthquake , this is really one of those reminders. it's a traumatic experience for so many of us that we were here in 1989 during the loma prieta earthquake, and it is a real jolt and reminder, no pun intended, to be ready. >> i could not get back to uc berkeley where i was a student for days because you saw what happened to the bay bridge. but it is like we are on the same wavelength, pun not intended with "wavelength," but it is time to prepare for your kit because we do live in earthquake country, and if nothing else, this is a reminder that, actually, in this area, we are much more prone to something of the size than where they actually had it today, in the sierra nevada foothills.
5:16 pm
in the bay area, the overall probability of a 6.7 or greater magnitude hitting the bay area in the next 30 years is 63%, so sandhya brought up get your plan ready, preparedness, get your kit, whether that is your medication or whatever your family needs for a few days, go to preparenorcal." we looked at that website . we helped put information in that website . it is all the information and resources that would prove useful in a situation like this. >> something else to note is after doing stories about earthquake kits over the years, something to point out is that making sure that they are up to date and that the battery still work in those flashlights, and that everything has been replenished. even if you don't have one or if you have one already, just a reminder to make sure that is all up-to-date. i do want to transition right now and get a sense of what people are seeing across the bay area and beyond. i know that social media has
5:17 pm
really exploded , and several terms have started trending, so we want to pull up a couple of images and pictures for you right now that are coming in from all over the place. as we take a look at this, our producer deb told us she spoke with a librarian in smith valley, who says no books moved on the shelves. quite a difference though from what we are seeing in this video right here. deb, perhaps you can enlighten us as to what we're seeing, but it looks like a home owner seeing that minor swaying of the light fixture and demand. we saw it coming of daly city, a little bit more rocking back and forth, but really, we are also streaming live on facebook.com/ it could help us greatly, and we could share them with our viewers if we can . tweets coming in such as this from the
5:18 pm
usgs earthquake, sank notable quick. preliminary information . what we have been reporting since it happened just before 4:00 this afternoon. that magnitude 5.9 quake near smith valley/nevada, and like we have been saying all afternoon, all evening, this is a very fluid situation. at times, we have seen the magnitude be a little bit higher. we also had another earthquake several hours east of stockton, but we have decided now things have been tailored and narrowed down, so we are focusing on this 5.9 quake that happened in rural nevada that could be felt as close as here in the bay area. >> i imagine usgs will be talking more about this. more on that later, but first, we want to share this tweet coming out of the governor's office . they do say as you might expect, "we are monitoring the earthquakes in northern california closely." this is a good reminder. "remember to drop, cover, and hold on in an earthquake and download california's earthquake early warning app
5:19 pm
that is available now to get notified before large earthquake set your region," because you might get that extra seconds' notice to get under a desk or get out of the house altogether, be away from the window and bookshelf, so that is coming out of the governor's office. usgs will be holding a news conference to talk more about this at 5:30. we will be going off air again because, as you know, we're covering nba finals game two tonight at 5:30, so we go to the covert at 5:30, so we will be streaming that. you can check it out on the abc7 news map, and on the website, abc7news.com. we will have the usgs press conference for you. >> a lot of resources to be had online and a situation we will be monitoring continually throughout the evening and on air as well on all i streaming platforms. >> interesting that what our producer, you mentioned, talked to the librarian there in smith valley and nothing fell off their shelves, it leaves me to wonder how they secured everything because there were
5:20 pm
people who were farther away in walker who actually, everything felt around them, right? certainly, things falling off shelves. how you set things up, how you anchor things if you are not yet anchoring your bookshelf to the wall, you absolutely should do that. tv, big things. all good reminders for all of us who live in earthquake country . we are overdue, especially on the hayward fault. >> oftentimes in a large incident, we always remember exactly the time and place we happened to be. you are looking at some video right now from social media, where it appears -- all that does dust she mentioned, remember? >> what you see on the right side of the screen, someone got that shot. >> if you are not tuned into abc7 news at 4:00, what we're referencing is the amount of dust that one business owner had mentioned got kicked up into the atmosphere after that quake happened. this woman was based in walker, which is smack dab, you know,
5:21 pm
about an hour or so away from the epicenter, less than that. that community had already gone through a natural disaster of a wildfire back in november, and she had been holding her 2-year- old baby. she is five months pregnant, ran out the door, and one of the things she had noticed was a large dust cloud, and she was not sure as to what it was coming from, but now we're getting from brett user on social media. that exact picture. many people who happen to be in their vehicles, you were mentioning, oftentimes don't feel it the same way that people do if they were high up on the second, third, or how your story. >> or not in motion. look at the dust. that could be very well from the rockslides that have happened, which resulted in the road closures as they inspect the roads and try to clear the boulders. they have explosive spear caltrans crews are ready to go
5:22 pm
to get those big boulders removed. that is what worries me. it is great that this is kind of a rural area where they don't have a lot of tall that -- and we have not heard a of damage, so we will get that out there. and you can only imagine the systems that are in place, right? to assess what is going on and how to tackle this, you know, making sure no one has been hurt. making sure the damage is at a minimum, and it was mentioned a campsite, right? because this is during the busy summer travel season. people are out and about. certainly, people at lake tahoe . we heard someone on the phone say earlier that, yes, those chairs, those ski lists were in operation at a time. everything came to a grinding halt . all of that needs to be examined. >> i forgot about that because those chairs, not all of them, but some of them, the trams are in operation even during the summer. not skiing, but you might take
5:23 pm
it to the top of the mountain so you can do mountain biking or sightseeing, so they are in operation, and that infrastructure will need to be examined, have here if we had an earthquake. all the muni tracks, b.a.r.t. tracks, caltrain tracks would have to be examined, so they are doing the same thing with their trams and ski lift equipment in the summertime being used for mountain biking and things like that. there's a lot to consider. south tahoe felt it, and a lot of people in the bay area are up in that area now vacationing. whether it is at the camping grounds or campgrounds or in the lake tahoe region, they probably thought they were getting out of the earthquake danger zone by leaving the bay area. >> much to their surprise. as we take a look at this map, you can see where the earthquake was centered, and the aftershocks of who really felt it. we have heard stories come in from colleagues, friends, a former photographer who worked at abc7
5:24 pm
she is in the reno area. relocated with her husband, and he happened to be working. he works with his hands , his art in the yard . he fell over, and he's a formidable man of over six feet tall, so it shows what people are experiencing. >> based on this map that we currently have up, it looks like, what, the epicenter is actually in walker now , and smith valley is actually two rings out. is that what we're now saying? that walker is actually the epicenter? that is something we're looking at, so usgs, you know, continues to update us. the other thing is dr. lucy jones has just put out another tweet. i was asking about aftershocks, so she says, "like every quake, the 5.9 in walker --" oh, so she too is in walker. one of the aftershocks could be bigger than the original 5.9.
5:25 pm
that is what sandy and i were trying to get to that and figure out percentage, and you are wise not to off-road guest, but it is 5% to 10%, according to dr. lucy jones, so there is a chance that we'll get something bigger, a small chance. >> we have a tahoe resident on the phone. >> according to our director, charlotte goodman, a resident of tahoe is on the line with us. charlotte, can you hear us? >> yes, i can. >> this is to kurt, our director. it appears kristen and i both know audio in our earpieces, as has saudia, so we cannot hear our guest, who is on the phone with us right now. but please do stay on the line, as we navigate the circumstances around this earthquake and kind of ping- pong around the coverage right now. but just to kind of recap this, the number of aftershocks, always a concerned. at last check, we had more than two dozen felt, in the range of
5:26 pm
about 2.5. nothing to the extent of serious worry, but still, something that is on people's radars. >> based on what dr. jones had just said, there is a 10% chance or a little less that there could be something bigger than what we already got later today,. but there is a 90% chance that what we will get is smaller than that , like the smaller ones that you referred to, the 3.5s, and that is what we have been seeing so far. this piece of video is interesting. it comes from rei mann. you know where this is, where we see some swaying? oh, we would not be able to hear right now anyway. >> it looks like we lost a little bit of our audio signal, so please forgive us for that. we are getting some interesting pictures and video coming in from all across the region. a lot of swaying, a lot of back
5:27 pm
and forth, a visual that came out of tahoe that we would love to see an image of is the waves on lake tahoe. it was described to us as could be a place where a surfer could take paradise, and so if you can imagine the imagery is quite shocking. and the dust that was brought up in an area not too far away near smith valley a user who happened to be driving on the roadways. so, you know, certainly, the pictures that are coming in and the stories really run the gamut. >> i am worried about the rockslides, and you see some of the dust that presumably resulted from that, but caltrans did say they did not have any report as of half an hour ago when we chatted by phone with one of the representatives, of injuries as a result of the rockslide, but you know, they are checking. there are a bunch of them, and as a result, 395 at bridgeport is closed, as well as parts of
5:28 pm
88 and 89, which are the smaller routes. they are not 80, not 50, but still, people who go up to the tahoe area may take those roads. be aware of that. the campgrounds where they have reports of rockslides or at least in the vicinity of where rockslides have happen, lovett so we are hoping to hear from folks who may be at those kamper campgrounds check in and say they are okay. >> we will keep a finger on the pulse of that situation . walker canyon, also a big problem area. it was brought up to our attention that there is a good resource where you can go and check out the maps that are live in real time from caltrans, so it is called quick maps. probably a good resource for anyone in the area heading out or knows of people who are on the roadways right now. >> usgs is going to start a news conference at about 5:30, so coming up shortly.
5:29 pm
we will be streaming that for you on the abc7 news website, abc7news.com, as well as our news app what if you could push a button and less carbon would be put into the air. if there were a button that would help you use less energy, breathe cleaner air, and even take on climate change... would you press it? ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ hey google, turn up the heat. ♪ ♪ ♪
