dozens of quakes rattled northern california. why aftershocks could be ahead. pfizer is seeking authorization for a third is a money grab. >> double digit temperatures, hotter weekend is coming. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. the deck started shaking and rolling. >> residents in central and northern california. bracing themes and hoping for no more shaking tonight after a magnitude 6 quake and dozens of aftershocks this afternoon. >> it was a earthquake. >> how do you know? >> the tires went a little funny. >> some felt it here in the bay area. we brought you continuous live coverage. >> my mom who lives near the

marina in san francisco she did feel it. she said it was about three seconds. >> reporter: the cluster of quakes leaving many uneasy tonight. >> i think a lot of people are still shaken from unpredictableness of the environment. >> it is dramatic with that we say good evening. it hit just before 4:00 and felt in california and across the nevada border. it was south of lake tahoe, and since then, 80 aftershocks, abc 7 news reporter highlights the quake's aftermath. >> reporter: from aggressive shaking in arnold to swaying felt in san francisco. the usgs confirms the magnitude 6 was wide reaching with nearly 15,000 reporting they felt it. >> it was

elsewhere, sharon and george from incline village, nevada shared their experience from the northshore of lake tahoe. >> the deck started shaking and rolling and then we realized it was still going, we realized it was a earthquake, quite big. >> reporter: close to the epi center, a business owner talked to us. >> a mess and scary. we are still feeling the aftershocks. it is unsettling. you never know what will happen. >> reporter: communities all around lake tahoe and far south as fresno felt the quake. the usgs says we can anticipate aftershocks for days following one of this size. back to you. well, meantime, new video tonight shows the damage inside of a flee market in walker about five miles from the quake's epi center. there were a bunch of items that fell off of the shelfs and fell on the shop's floor. >> it felt like it lift the building up and slammed it back down.

learned firsthand what the force of a tsunami can do when a quake in japan in 2011 left heavy damage. in 1964, a 9.2 earthquake in alaska sent a tsunami that did damage on the california coast and parts of the north bay. now, state geologist are giving us updated information about where a major tsunami can strike around the bay. new technology allowed the california geological maps updated. >> preparing for the worst, 9.2 off of alaska that is the worst case we are looking at san francisco. >> reporter: in the east bay, new maps show the event can bring tsunami waves into west oakland and lake merit along the waterfront it could be bad. >> it was first thought that waves from the tsunami would come this far, where i am standing near the ferry building.

risk as temperatures sore between 100 and 115 degrees. it will be extreme. we have heat advisory for santa clara county. noon tomorrow until 11:00 p.m. on sunday. heat illness there, middle 90s to lower 100s to middle 100s. as we start you off in the morning it will be comfortable at 5:00 a.m. not so much at noon. you notice there are 90s inland, well inland by the afternoon. we are talking triple digit heat, the coast will remain mild in the 60s. i will let you know how long the hot weather will last. the weekend forecast coming up. >> things are heating up quickly, thanks. today, governor newsom asked us all to voluntarily cutback on how much water we use. in the bay area, every county other than san francisco is in a drought state of emergency. marin, san mateo counties were add today. we have more now on how newsom says you can help. >> reporter: with a good portion of the state now in year two of a

significant drought governor newsom called on everyone to voluntarily reduce water use by 15%. >> we are encouraging people to do the common sense things, like reducing amount of irrigation water you are doing on your lawns. >> reporter: he declares a drought emergency in nine more counties statewide. >> the hots are getting hotter and dreyer's are getting drier and climate change is here and real. if you don't believe it because you don't believe science believe your own eyes. >> reporter: in northern california the two largest reservoirs are below 50% average. the situation is not as bad in southern california out at lake paris the reservoir is over 100% of where it usually is this time of the year. that is perhaps one reason why southern california is not in a drought emergency not yet. still, the governor is urging conservation statewide. >> not only on residents but industrial, commercial operations and

stream, just search abc 7 bay area. now, shifting gears to the coronavirus pandemic, today, pfizer said it is developing a covid-19 booster shot to target the highly transmissible delta variant. the fda and cdc say not so fast. abc 7 news reporter and vaccine team member kate larson spoke to bay area experts who were critical of the announcement. >> reporter: one month after new data demonstrated pfizer's two dose vaccine works well against the delta variant the drugmaker made a surprise announcement that it would seek fda authorization for a third booster shot. >> it is hard for me to understand it. >> reporter: ucsf infectious disease expert questions pfizer's rational, that new data suggests immunity declines six months post vaccination. >> my concern is that their motive is financial. the government is unlikely to purchase the

doses for the u.s. population like they did with the first and the second. because we we we we we people will purchase them, insurance companies will buy it and a they will make money off of it. >> reporter: the third dose given six months later would preserve highest level of protection. hours after the announcement cdc says americans did not need a booster slot. >> i got my booster four months ago tomorrow. >> reporter: this seattle resident is a volunteer from moderna phase one and booster trials, he thinks the focus should be on getting first and second out globally instead of worrying about a third shot. >> if we don't get everybody, especially the most vulnerable in large and emerging economies vaccinateed vaccinate -- vaccinated more variants will come out. >> local well level, national

level we don't need a booster right now. >> reporter: he works with pfizer on vaccine trials. >> it sounds like pfizer and fda need to have a good heart-to-heart talk first. generally that is what works best and they know that. i am surprised. >> reporter: it is unclear if pfizer will still file for booster authorization in the u.s. this month. kate larson, abc 7 news. to the north bay now, the city of santa rosa is responding to an out break of the covid-19 delta variant at a homeless shelter. 27 people tested positive at the samuel jones hall homeless shelter. resident who's tested positive are being quarantined at the neighborhood shelter. the city says most of the people who tested positive were not vaccinated. next at 11:00. getting vt aback on track. the transit agency rolls out its plan to resume service. plus, facing accusations his

resuming light rail service by the end of july. all routes have been out of service since may 26th when an employee went into the rail yard and shot nine workers before shooting himself. they spent the past six weeks focused on employees and offering grief counseling and working with employee who's want to reassign to other jobs. >> we heard from a lot of operators they are ready to go back to work and they understand their work is important to our community. that is positive, that is terrific. >> vta says they are making security upgrades and repairs to the rail yard over the next several years. tonight, the abc 7 news i- team talked to san francisco district attorney. he responded to comments that his office does not prosecute retail theft

cases. the president and ceo of california retailers made those comments on abc 7 news at 3:00 p.m. yesterday. in part to response to this video of a handbag heist from neiman marcus this week. he is as there is nothing more important to him and his office than ensuring everybody in san francisco feels safe. >> when the police bring us cases that have chargeable evidence of crimes that were committed including shoplifting, petty theft and certainly organized retail crime we take action in the vast majority of those cases. we are actively working with law enforcement partners in san francisco and across the bay area to dismantle the organized retail crime networks that create a marketplace for stolen goods. >> his office recently filed 15 charges against the suspect who was caught on video taken by abc 7 news reporter at a walgreens in san francisco. last year the retail theft task force recovered $8 million of stolen

on the palo alto. middle 60s at the coast. warmer, not too hot temperatur digits. 96 santa rosa, 92 in san rafael. middle 90s around vallejo. in the east bay, 76 in berkeley. 87 in fremont. heading inland and this is where it will be extreme. 105 in fairfield, 106 in brentwood and 102 in livermore. risk of heat illnesses tomorrow. dangerous heat inland up to 108 degrees, good news is, it will remain in the 60s. hot inland on sunday. then we will notice the temperatures coming down into the comfort zone, closer to average, 50s to 80s on tuesday through thursday. that can not come soon enough. >> yes, get through the next

her reaction is precious. a 14-year-old from louisiana made history at tonight's scripps spelling bee. she was the first african- american champion in the bee's history, along with being a great speller she holds guinness world records for basketball tricks and has been in a commercial with steph curry. after virtual preliminary rounds she faced off against 10 other spellers in tonight's in-person event. a 6th grader in middle school in san ramoan came in second. she misspelled a word. >> she will be on good morning america tomorrow. you can tune in at 7:00 a.m.
