in half read building a better bay area, moving forward and finding solutions, this is abc7 news. you are watching abc7 news at 5:00, on hulu live in where every stream. the cdc came out with guidelines regarding masks for students and teachers. they say that those who have been fully vaccinated can do away with masks. our education reporter joins us now to let us know if these guidelines will sway scscscscsc officials. >> reporter: we checked with oakland, san francisco, fremont, san ramon and san jose. all those districts said they were taking their cues from the california health me. day that department said thank you cdc but we are doing it our way. >> i'm just very excited because i graduated. >> reporter: at castle mt. high

school, a special graduation event had many wearing masks. but, the cdc is now saying that in the fall when classes begin, students that are fully vaccinated should not have to wear a mask. same with teachers. only those who have not been vaccinated should continue wearing face coverings and keep three feet of distancing. anyone vaccinated or not who gets on a a mask. here is where it gets a little tricky. how will the school district know who is vaccinated and who is not if they are not asking for proof of vaccination? so, the cdc has made it clear that they will leave it up to the schools and local health officials to decide what to do. oakland unified says it will opt for the universal masking policy in the fall. >> unfortunately we know in oakland that not enough people are getting vaccinated. the last numbers we heard were

around 50% of the city being vaccinated. >> students need to her face coverings or face masks, but so do adults. >> san francisco unified has been offering town halls for parents regarding covid safety. the district said we continue to plan for all staff and students to wear masks as a prevention strategy or he because many schools don't have the space to keep all kids three feet apart, california will continue to require that masks be worn indoors. >> supporting and starting off the school year with kids masked coming back safely with 100% of our students able to come in person was the key strategy. >> reporter: in today's recommendations, the cdc is encouraging schools to offer routine testing, at least once a week, something the state has vowed to do. >> after all those recommendations put forward by the cdc, we are here to tell

had gone back into the house and was preparing to go back outside just as the tree came down. >> i asked if it was like an earthquake. she said no, it was just a big smack sound worried she didn't even know what it was. she was just about to come out into her yard work. thank god she did not make it out in time. >> talk about a close call. that woman was not hurt but the house sustained considerable damage. and there is a massive mess to clean up. he noticed the inside of the tree was completely hollow. five palo alto police officers are suing the city, blaming discrimination and harassment over their opposition to a black lives matter mural from last year. >> reporter: in front of palo alto city hall you can see the remnants of a controversial black lives matter mural that is no longer there. in a lawsuit filed against the city and its police department, five of the city's police

officers say they were forced to physically pass and confront the artwork each time they went into work. that issue is what they consider offensive and discriminatory. she eventually escaped from prison and fled to cuba. the lawsuit also says the mural included the logo of the new black panthers which is listed as a hate group by the southern poverty law center. the law firm representing the officers told abc7 news news that it's important to note that the lawsuit nor the plaintiffs has no issue with the mural in general him of the only issue was with two icon/pictures within the letters. that the police officers association simply asked be removed from the mural on two occasions and they were told no. the lawsuit alleges that
