iso has extended the statewide flex alert for saturday. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo , abc7 news. >> you can check out the temperatures, air quality, and wind any time on your tv, our real-time weather tracker lets you see the current conditions across the bay area. they are live now also on our abc7 bay area connected tv app. you can download that app wherever you stream, just search abc7 bay area. people living or camping near a fire in the plumas national forest are being told to evacuate immediately. the back with complex fire is the largest burning in the state right now. it was originally two fires, caused by lightning strikes but has now merged into one. before so there is this so they burn more than 38,000 acres and it's more than 9% contained. homes have been destroyed but there's no reports of injuries. the fire is burning about 60 miles north of truckee, a few miles from the california nevada border. for mac and out of control

wildfire in oregon is threatening transmission lines to carry power to california. in response, governor newsom has signed a emergency proclamation for additional energy capacity. the blue lake fire has burned nearly 39,000 acres with zero containment. >> is just a matter of time before one of these variants does overcome the vaccine. >> this morning, the highly contagious variant is driving up pieces and parts of the bay area. two local counties have landed on the federal hotspot watchlist. abc7 news reporter kate larsen spoke with officials and doctors about this worrying trend. >> reporter: the delta variant is driving up, with cases across the country and in california. it's put part of the east bay on the cdc emergency hotspot list. >> our case rates have more than doubled in recent weeks, and i'm concerned for further increases. >> reporter: the alameda county, they've been increasing along the 880 corridor for san

leandro and oakland. >> but also the places where vaccine rates are lower. >> in almeda and contra costa, 62% are fully vaccinated, much higher than the national average, which is 48%, but it's still not enough. >> we are seeing an increase in half sliced patients. not surprised, they are not vaccinated. >> reporter: the chief medical officer for jameer health and contra costa county says, there are currently 16 covert patients, it is 36 to 77 other hospitals in concord and walnut creek. >> i've had patients admitted to the hospital sometimes work over that were not vaccinated, that were, you know, somewhat sorry at the time of their admission, that they had waited for whatever reason. >> this delta variant is very concerning. largely because of how contagious it is. and i really believe we are at a point where we can say, pretty confidently that you are either going to be vaccinated or you are going to have covid.

>> reporter: the chief of emergency medicine at the hospital, where there would patients doubled overnight to nine, all of them unvaccinated. he said, that needs to change. >> one of the questions that has to be asked is, to what extent are we free to make choices that have this serious of an impact on other people? and it is taking ultimately the lives of other people, and putting them at risk, to make a choice that, from my perspective, just doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: acting health officer said they are watching the data closely, and would like to avoid shutting down the city again. >> if you have friends or family that have been hesitant, you know, now is the time, please don't hesitate any longer, get the vaccine, it'll save your life and it will be what's best for our city. >> reporter: kate larsen, abc7 news. california is keeping its mask mandate for schools, despite the cdc's new

guidelines. yesterday, the cdc said students, teachers, and staff who are fully vaccinated will not need to wear masks in school beginning this fall. california health officials say, they are recommending all students, regardless of their vaccination status, wear masks, so no child singled out for different. >> we believe with masking and with testing, as an available option, that we can get kids back here in person 100% in our schools. and we are glad that the cdc supported this vision. >> reporter: the state will release a more complete set of guidelines for the upcoming school year on monday. we are just over 24 hours from sir richard branson blasting off into space. he is making final preparations for his trip right now. the british billionaire will be one of six people on board his virgin galactic rocket plane, that is set for launch tomorrow morning. the twin fuselage carrierlage cr

in the east bay, after last weekend chaos, oakland is testing out a new strategy to deter sideshows, excuse me, today's city workers installed so-called bots dots at one of the cities that he is intersections. abc7 news reporter liz peña explains this is one part of the city's long-term sososososoo >> reporter: after one of the most violent weekends and oakland's history, with the legal fireworks, shootings, and sideshows, city workers finished installing pavement markers, their goal? >> to discourage sideshow activity that we have. and at the same time, it reduces traffic speed, and so it's an example example examplee trying to implement. >> reporter: last sunday, a massive sideshow involving 300 cars left one man with critical injuries, after getting struck by a moving vehicle, now on the intersection of 35th avenue and macarthur boulevard, the first cluster of pavement markers your councilmember kyle said, it took six months to finalize the strategy.

>> we are trying to push it, if we catch you doing the sideshow, i will get to keep your car. >> reporter: across the intersection, we met omar. for years, he has had a front row seat to the sideshows on macarthur boulevard. >> is damaging the streets and all, but it's bettbettbettbettbt people wandering off and doing worse things, you know? it's getting the community altogether. >> reporter: and oakland resident, right before he crossed the center section. >> i think it was probably a waste of money. >> reporter: according to the city member of oakland, there's going markers like the ones you see behind me at least 10 intersections. >> was some community members are asking for now is -- >> a long-term solution for the sideshows. >> council member kyle said they are working on it. the first proposal was the oakland coliseum. >> that wasn't accepted, but we are going to try the racetracks, like the raceway.

>> reporter: for now, this is a strategy they are implementing, as the police chief prepares to hold a stand up for oakland rally on saturday. in oakland, liz peña, abc7 news. check this out, thieves got away with $250,000 worth of merchandise from a jewelry store in downtown downtown down the owner of jeffries diamonds and goldsmith says, this burglary happened around 3:00 yesterday morning. alarm went off as they smashed the display cases, but that still did not stop them. the entire crime last around five minutes. the storeowner says, this is the fourth time that they have been burglarized in five years. happening now, aftershocks continue to rattle antelope valley after thursday's 6.0 magnitude earthquake. the shaking was felt across northern california, even here in san frcisco. no by the state's new shake alert warning system. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard explains why. >> pretty scary, very intense. >> reporter: restaurant owner shelley rosen still on adjuster

a magnitude 6 earthquake rolled to her hometown of walker in eastern california. she had her two-year-old, taking cover with aftershocks still happening. >> last night was pretty stressful. neither my partner or i got much sleep because of how just the aftershocks continued. you never know when you are going to hit. >> reporter: from aggressive shaking and arnold to swing in san francisco. the usgs reports the magnitude 6 antelope valley earthquake was wide reaching, with nearly 15,000 reporting they felt it. even behind the wheel, near the california nevada border, a spectacle, a large amount of dust launched into the air during the rattle. the people in this car, processing the scene. scene. sc >> it was an earthquake. >> how do you know? >> the tires went a little funny. >> reporter: sending giant boulders on the i-95 near colville. technologists date quakes in eastern california are not unique, but could it mean a precursor to something bigger? >> it's all likely that there

will be smaller earthquakes that follow the aftershocks. we not the shaking brought rocks and boulders down centennial bluff in colville. seismologist say some people got a shake alert warning on their phones, seconds before the quake, but many did not. >> did you get anything like that on your phone? >> no, nothing like that. >> as a result of the fact that there is fewer stations in california, the shake alert doesn't do as good of a job as we would like. >> reporter: after covid, there is no a new threat to prepare for. >> this is anecdotally earthquake, something that should be on our radar. >> reporter: the seismologist as the shake alert system is still a work in progress, there still about two more years of a development plan including installing more seismic reporting stations in one part of california, where of course, earthquakes do happen. in the newsroom, cornell bernard, abc7 news.

85 degrees. >> what we found is those preferred bio temperatures were actually significantly higher than the body temperatures they were actually maintaining in nature. >> the warmer temperatures could lead to longer breeding periods for the rattlesnakes, average temperatures are expected to rise by about 2 degrees fahrenheit on the california coast over the next several decades, due to climate change. lisa, let's get a check of the forecast now, so many microclimates, you know? it's like coming over the bridge, there was sort of drizzle. it's just wild. >> yeah, a 42 degrees spread yesterday, i was going to ask you to guess, but i will tell you. 105 at the livermlivermlivermlim very wide range. once again today, plenty of 60s from daly city, some 70s in san francisco, and triple digit heat inland. we still have our advisories, but we are looking at that widespread range once again.

5:56 is official summarize, is at that age:33. w clouds and fog. yes, there is mist and drizzle at the coast, the mean marine layer is up and down the california coastline and will continue to see some of those gusty wind. we've got a northwesterly wind, well off the coast, that's allowing for our seasonal upwelling, keeping the sea surface temperatures cool and initiating that pretty breezy to gusty wind throughout the afternoon. right now, it is 53 downtown, 56 in oakland and hayward, numbers are cool, cooler than we were yesterday at this hour, 59 in san jose. so, feeling pretty good out there right now. you can see the fog here, from our exploratory and camera. we got the fog along the coast and call numbers to start out, excessive heat inland over the weekend, that's not going to change. and we are looking at the risk of heat related illnesses and fire danger elevated right on through tomorrow. but, we are definitely going to see that range again of over 40 degrees from our coast to our

inland valleys. so here's a look at what to expect today and tomorrow, as the fog is situated along the shoreline there. it'll just be right along the coast to montero, this is into your sunday. similar conditions into your saturday, we will get a little bit of cooling into your saturday and sunday, as we get the sea breeze, right along the coast. so once again, if you are right along that fog belt, or looking at that coastal gap, even out by the delta, looking at those winds up to about 30 miles an hour at times, you can see throughout the evening hours. still over 20 miles an hour. then into your sunday, even breezy or. that will bring the temperatures down just a little bit out there. as we get into that cooling trend, taking us through monday, that everyone getting back to normal on tuesday. here's a look at the highs today, sacrament, how about 111? same deal in bakersfield, 80s in los angeles, 90 in san jose, you are under the heat

advisory, we are in the 60s in san francisco. into sunday, looking at temperatures a little bit hotter in the interior, cooler by sacramento, and about 5 degrees of cooling for the south bay and even cooler into your tuesday. locally, 60s and 70s arriving tomorrow around the shoreline. this will stay in place on monday. notice, almost out of the 90s on monday, back to normal. looking at temperatures really coming down to seasonal levels, maybe a bit below on your tuesday. it's a day though, nothing but the heat inland, looking at 101 in santa rosa, 106 in concord, 80 in oakland. warmer, compared to yesterday, by about 5 degrees. not along the coast, still looking at 60s and 70s there. upper 80s in freeman in santa cruz. accuweather seven-day forecast really shows the gamut from

okay, you can now have a chance to work from home in the aloha state. hawaii officials are hoping to bring in the workforce through a program called movers and shakers. selected applicants win a free round-trip and will be required to stay in hawaii for the month of october. they will also volunteer with a local nonprofit. this is the second round for this program. the first round pulled in 90,000 applications. the deadline to apply is monday. a southern california youth sports leader is being the s are nighright here ry r

we can expect, lisa? >> , good morning to you. we have a heat advisory and excessive heat warning to pass along to you. we also have fog this morning, here's a look at the northbay interior valleys, and also the santa clara valley, where the heat advisory is in effect until 11:00 tomorrow night. mid 90s, to maybe 100 degrees here in our excessive heat warning, once again, right through 11:00 for the cities up in the northbay from clearlake, england, and out by the delta, although the breeze is going to kick up throughout the afternoon, danville, dublin, mount hamilton and livermore, some of the cities also done by the santa cruz mountains, where temperatures could be anywhere from 100 to 116, here's a look at mount diablo, where we have a spare the air alert today in effect for the poor air quality where we are expecting warmest temperatures in the inland valleys. we will get to moderate air quality for everyone tomorrow as the seabreeze increases and a look at mount tam right now, looks clear. there's a compressed marine layer with drizzle at the coast, 63 in morgan hill, 53 downtown, and a look from san jose right now, 52 in novato, 61 by the delta, and that

brings us a little bit cooler this morning, anywhere anywhere to 8 degrees cooler. while we are expecting a lot of heat, the good news is, we've got the cool air out there right now, 82 in concord. by 10:00 and as we get towards 3:00, we are well over 100 degrees inland, near 70 by san francisco, and we will talk about a warm night tonight on a hot sunday on the way, liz? lisa, thank you. a flex alert is an alert for californians 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm tonight. abc7 news reporter lisa brinkley is here with how they are getting to the feet. >> reporter: from squirrels sprawled out in the shade, to a backyard sprinkler, expect wild animals to show up in your neighborhood this weekend and a desperate search for water in a heat wave. >> unlike us, many of these animals can't sweat it out, you'll see interesting behavior, might see some flat squirrels laying on the sidewalk, you might see birds open mouth and panting.

we do see, depending on certain cases, an uptick in certain hospital patient during extreme heat. >> reporter: lindsay says it's okay to set out containers of water for animals and birds. they will find it if they needed. people will seek refuge in air conditioning, including cooling centers in far east contra costa and alameda counties, where masks are required indoors. plants also need some extra care. >> water deeply and rests less frequently since you are in a drought, you want to do it that often. but when you water, really water deep. if you have a plan, i would wait until tuesday after the heatwave is over and you don't want to fertilize right now. these plants and pots, they have to be watered every day, sometimes twice a day. >> getting plants extra water is a challenge, especially when water districts are calling for decreasing water use. perhaps collect water from your shower in a bucket, contra costa water district this week is asking customers to conserve by 10%. >> anytime we are dealing with

a dry year, the come along with heat waves, and we just need to make sure that we are adjusting how we are using our water. >> reporter: i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> the cdc is making a big push to get all students back into the classroom this fall with new mask guidelines, vaccinated students, teachers and other staff members don't need to wear masks, but is abc news reporter karina mitchell explained, these recommendations are causing some confusion. >> reporter: a big shift by the cdc as the agency urges schools to return to in this fall. the cdc issuing new items now, saying, students, teachers, and staff who are fully vaccinated will not need to wear masks. the children two and older, who aren't vaccinated should still mask up. the new guidelines are really just recommendations. the cdc saying, it will be up to school districts to make their own rules. rules. rules. >>

unvaccinated kids are wearing a mask, my guess is, it'll be driven a lot by local conditions. here in vermont with very few infections, probably not necessary. in missouri with a large outbreak, probably be really helpful. >> reporter: in california, schools will continue to require masks. in arizona, a ban on mask mandate and schools. according to the cdc, only 5% of children ages 12 to 15 with at least one shot, 2.5% of 16 to 17-year-olds also with at least one dose.one dose.on but from coast to coast, millions of children under 12, who can't get the vaccine yet. meantime, the delta variant rapidly spreading in under vaccinated areas. at mercy hospital in springville, missouri, there are more patients hospitalized with covid-19 than at any other point in the pandemic. >> we are seeing a lot more intimations this go-round, a lot of healthier people, younger people in their 20s, 30s, 40s. they are getting this delta variant. >> reporter: missouri, among 10 states seen coded admissions increase percent in the last

two weeks. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. san francisco chinatown is letting the world know that it is reopened r chinatown was hit especially hard during the pandemic. restaurants and shops closed and the annual chinese new year parade was closed this year. stores and restaurants are back open and welcoming back visitors. >> people come from all over the world to visit chinatown, not just during the parade and the activities during the lunar new year, but just, when you come to san francisco, you want to visit chinatown, it's one of the oldest, most incredible rich in history chinatown's in the world. >> the chinese chamber of commerce held its largest banquet in 18 months, at the 100-year-old cafe on grant avenue. it was within a week of closing last year, but it did say open, thanks to funding from the city and the landlord, who offered a big discount on the the the

>> reporter: new this morning, a downtown miami courthouse has been shut down, following a safety inspection stemming from the surfside condo building collapse. the court filing describes the building as temporarily evacuated, and a closure order was issued for 16 and above. meantime, one of the families issued by the condo collapse has something to be happy about, their cat, named beings, was found alive yesterday. he lived with his family on the ninth floor. he had been missing since the night of the collapse, more than two weeks ago now. cruz believed being cyber survived the collapse or escape from what was left of the building, before it was demolished last weekend. the death toll is now at 79, 61 people remain unaccounted for. dj quest lovequest lovequese debut in the new documentary, some are of soul. he is looking to restore a lost chapter of black history. on the red carpet reporter carlo smith was at a free screening of the film.
