back to an indication that the coast is not going to be hot, the baby is going to be comfortable, but we have heat in the inland north bay, petaluma, napa, san rafael, a heat advisory until 11:00 tomorrow, santa clara valley from campbell to morgan hill, sam martin and gilroy, where upper elevations are still very warm right now. excessive heat warning for our inland east bay. you can see around dublin, livermore, and right around the honda, the summit there, santa cruz mountains, tupper lake, clear lake, temperatures over 100 degrees. there's a look outside, where you will notice that we have a low cloud deck, a spare the air alert, moderate air quality to pour in the inland east bay, where we have the warmest temperatures. check it out, our deck of low cloud's at about 1000 feet, that's salesforce at about 1070, looking at 50 in mountain view, 59 in san jose, and a live look from our where it's clear and temperatures are in the low 50s, novato, low 60s with adult

tabriz out there. but despite that, and despite our cooler start, it is going to be hot again today in our inland valleys. looking at temperatures anywhere from the 90s in the south bay, triple digits in our inland east bay. we will detail your neighborhood in a few minutes, live? lisa, thank you. in the south bay, parts of santa clara county will be in a heat advisory this weekend. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo shows us how folks are trying to stay cool. >> reporter: hiding from the heat in san jose means jamming, activities into the cooler evenings. get ready, no nighttime relief is inspected for this weekend's bay area heat wave. >> not fun. i don't like it. >> reporter: we met 13-year-old elijah at chavez, where the city is taking advantage of the area of shade. elsewhere, hot amateurs have called for the activation of three cooling centers across the city friday through sunday. the move follows the national weather service of heat advisory, lasting just as long. >> we opened cooling centers last month. during the activation, we saw about 60 people over the course

of two days. people are still utilizing the centers as a place to cool down. >> reporter: fridays issued flex alert force them outdoors away from ac and any large appliances. a few ways the california independent system operator is encouraging volunteer conservation. >> just getting out of the house in the evening to cool off a little and give them some outside time. >> inside, icicles, relief from the heat, handrolled, and a promise of cooler ice cream concoctions. >> because we are putting it directly on micah metal slate that's around -25 degrees, it keeps it extra cold. >> reporter: you can go the extra step. in a statement,statement,statem, reduction and demand may be sufficient to avoid further emergency levels and avoid outages. adding, we encourage consumers to voluntarily reduce energy use , to help us maintain a grid reliability. cal iso has extended the statewide flex alert for saturday.

in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> you can check out the temperatures, air quality, and wind any time on your tv, real- time weather tracker lets you see the current conditions across the bay area. fair live now on our abc7 bay area connected tv out, download the app wherever you stream by searching abc7 bay area. people living or camping near a fire in the plumas national forest are being told to evacuate immediately. the beckwourth complex fire is the largest burning in the state right now. it was originally two fires, caused by lightning strikes, but it has now merged into one. the forest service says it has burned more than 38,000 acres. it is just 9% contained. homes have been destroyed, but there are no reports of injuries. the fire is burning about 60 miles north of truckee, a few miles from the california nevada border. out-of-control wildfire burning in southern oregon is turning transmission lines that carry power to california. in response, governor newsom has signed an emergency proclamation to free up

additional energy capacity. the bootleg fire has burned nearly 35,000 acres with zero containment. >> is just a matter of time, before one of these variants does overcome the vaccinthe vacn >> this morning, the highly contagious delta variant is writing up pieces and parts of the bay area. two local counties have landed on a federal hotspot watchlist. abc7 news reporter kate larsen spoke with bay area officials and doctors about this worrying trend. >> reporter: the delta variant is driving up covid cases across the country and in california. the growing search has now put parts of the east bay on the cdc's emergency hotspot list. >> our case rates have more than doubled in recent weeks, and i'm concerned for further increases. >> reporter: dr. nicholas moss is the health officer in alameda county, where cases have been increasing along the 880 corridor , for san leandro and oakland. >> those are also the places where i've seen rates lower. >> reporter: in alameda and

contra costa county, 62% of residents are fully vaccinated, much higher than the national average, which is 48%. but it's still not enough. >> we are seeing an increase in hospitalized patients, and not surprisingly, they are not vaccinated. >> reporter: dr. russell rodriguez, chief medical officer for john mayer health and contra costa county, he says there's currently 16 covid patients, and other hospitals in concord and walnut creek. >> i've had patients who have been admitted to the hospital for covid symptoms that were not vaccinated, that were, you know, somewhat sorry at the time of their admission, that they had waited for whatever reason. >> this delta variant is very concerning, largely because of how contagious it is. and i really believe we are at a point where we can say confidently, that you are either going to be vaccinated, or you are going to have covid. >> reporter: dr. chris coldwell, the chief of emergency medicine as entrances go general hospital, where there covid patients doub

overnight to nine, all of them unvaccinated. she said, that needs to change. >> one of the questions that has to be asked is, to what extent are we free to make choices that have this serious of an impact on other people? and it is taking, ultimately the lives of other people, and putting them at risk, to make a choice that, from my perspective, just doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: acting san francisco health officer dr. susan phillips says they are watching the data closely. and they would like to avoid shutting down the city again. >> if you have friends or family that have been hesitant, you know, now is the time, please don't hesitate any longer. get the vaccine, it'll save your life and it will be what's best for our city. >> reporter: kate larsen, abc7 news. california is keepcaliforn mask mandate for school, despite the cdc's new guideline. yesterday, the cdc says, student, teacher and staff who are fully vaccinated will not need to wear masks in school

beginning this fall. california health officials say they are recommending all students, regardless of their vaccination status, wear masks, so that no child feels singled out or different. >> we believe that with masking, and with testing, as an available option, that we can get kids back here, in person, 100% in our schools, and we are glad that the cdc supported this vision. >> the state will release a more complete set of guidelines for the upcoming school year on monday. we are about 24 hours from sir richard richard richard off into space. he is currently making final preparations for his trip. the british billionaire will be one of six people on board his virgin galactic rocket plane, that is set for lunch morning. the twinges lodge carrier jet will take the rocket to a cruising altitude of 50,000 feet, and then the space plan will be released and fired up some 55 miles above the new mexico desert. those on board will get a few minutes of weightlessness, before it descends back to

in the east bay, after last weekend chaos, oakland is testing out a new strategy to deter sideshows. city workers installed so- called botts' dots at one of the city's busiest intersections. abc7 news reporter liz peña explained, is one part of the city's long-term long-term longt >> reporter: after one of the most violent weekdsy, with th city workerscity workerscity wos installing pavement markers. there? >> to discourage sideshow activity that we have. and at the same time, it reduces traffic speed, and it's an example of what we are trying to implement. >> reporter: last sunday, a massive sideshow involving 300 cars left one man with critical injuries, after getting struck by a vehicle. now on the intersection of 35th avenue and macarthur boulevard, the first cluster of pavement markers. the council members that it took six months to finalize the strategy. >> i'm even trying to push it, if we catch you doing this i

joke him i will get to keep your car. >> reporter: across the intersection, we met omar, for years he has had a front row sheet seats to the sideshows. >> it's damagingit's damagingitg and all, but it's better off than people wandering off and doing worse things, you know? it's getting the community altogether. >> reporter: and oakland resident, right before he crossed the center section. >> it was a waste of money. >> reporter: according to the three of oakland is working on installing several pavement markers like the ones you see behind me in at least 10 intersections. with some community members asking for now, -- >> long-term solution for the sideshows. >> reporter: councilmember kyle said they are working on it. their first proposal was the oakland coliseum. >> but that wasn't accepted, but we are going to try the racetracks, like the sonoma raceway. >> reporter: for now, this is the strategy they are implementing. as the police chief prepares to hold a stand up for oakland rally on saturday.

in oakland, liz peña, abc7 news. thieves got away with $250,000 worth of merchandise from a jewelry store in downtown campbell. check out this video. the owner of jeffries diamonds and goldsmith said the burglary happened about 3:00 yesterday morning. and alarm didn't go off, as they smash the display cases, but that still did not stop them. the entire crime lost around five minutes. the store owner says, this is the fourth time they have been burglarized in five years. happening now, aftershocks continued to rattle antelope valley after thursday's 6.0 magnitude earthquake there. the shaking was felt across northern california, even here in san francisco, but not everyone was notified by the state's new shake alert system. abc7 news reporter bernard explains why. >> pretty scary, very intense. she and her two-year-old taking cover with aftershocks still

happening. >> even last night, it was pretty stressful. neither my partner or i got much sleep, because of how the aftershocks continued. you never know when they are going to hit. >> reporter: from aggressive shaking and arnold is weighing in san francisco, the usgs reports the magnitude 6 antelope valley earthquake was wide reaching, with nearly 15,000 reporting they felt it. even behind the wheel near the california nevada border, a spectacle, a large amount of dust, launched into the air during the rattle. the people in this car, processing the >> it was an earthquake. >> how do you know? >> the tires went funny. >> reporter: sending giant boulders onto i-95 near colville. seismologists say quakes in eastern california are not unique, but could it mean a precursor to something bigger? >> yes, there could be big earthquakes that follow, but it's likely there will be smaller earthquakes that follow the aftershocks. >> reporter: the shaking

brought rocks and boulders down centennial bluff in colville. seismologists say, some people got a shake alert warning on their phones, seconds before the quake, but many did not. nothing like that. >> it was a result of the fact there were fewer stations not d good a job as we would like. >> reporter: back-in walker, sally rosen knows, now with covid, there's a new threat to prepare for. >> this is earthquakes country, so it's definitely something that should be on our radar. >> reporter: a seismologists said the statesthe statesthe stt work in progress, there is still about two more years of a development plan, including installing more seismic reporting stations in rural parts of california, where of course, earthquakes do happen. in the newsroom, cornell bernard, abc7 news. news. news. okay, snitching on the water wasting neighbor can have a big impact on the state's water supplies, turns out. the university of wisconsin in madison study the loss california drought that lasted

temperatures they were actually maintaining in nature. >> the warmer temperatures could lead to longer breeding periods for the rattlesnakes. average temperatures architected to rise by about 2 degrees fahrenheit on the california coast over the next several decades. due to climate change. lisa, did you feel the earthquake this week? >> i did not, did you? >> no, i didn't. >> well, we are definitely entering a time where we will have some changes. we are going to be feeling comfortable or superhot out there, because despite our excessive heat warning, and heat advisory, we have cool air at the coast and gusty winds on the way home again today. so if you were in san francisco or right along where you get the fog, you felt the wind, and if you need huge relief, you've got a place to go, today and tomorrow, the coast is just going to be in the 60s and foggy in parts of the shoreline. there's a look at live doppler 7, up and down the shoreline,

we have got the cooling, but warmer weather as we had just a couple miles away from our beaches. here's the exploratory camera, friend there, you saw him in the bottom of your screen, with us this morning. 59 in san jose, 62 in morgan hill, 53 in san francisco. good morning. 57 in oakland. mountain view, comfortable 50 degrees. going up into the upper 80s today there. here's a look at sutro, the deck of low clouds gives you an indication that we will have that cooling at the coast, around the bay will be comfortable, and we will even get a breeze later on today in the inland valleys. still, we are going to have temperatures well over 100 degrees right now. it is 84 on top of mount tam, with 4% relative humidity, 9% relative humidity in mount diablo with 85 degrees. 56 in napa, 60 by the delta. upper elevations are already

quite warm, we never cooled off from yesterday. and a look toward mount diablo, you can see the deck of low clouds, so morning fog along the coast, even mist and drizzle, excessive heat continues inland, and we will look for the risk of heat related illnesses, right on through the weekend, as the folks in the inland valleys are not getting a break. really until monday. there is a look at our low cloud deck from point raise, where the winds will be cooking up. stinson beach, not a lot of fun. ocean beach come only in the 60s. montero, capitola, through davenport, we will have some fog, then some sunshine, looking at sunnier conditions down along santa cruz, but into sunday, still the deck of low clouds is very and the breeze increases throughout the afternoon. that allow for a bit of cooling. let's take a look at where it's not going to be cool from sacramento today at 111, san jose under heat advisory at 90. you can see los angeles, 83, taking you into sunday. going off 5 degrees locally, even cooler in the sacramento

valley's, the delta breeze gets going, but we are still quite toasty in the san joaquin valley, sacramento valley, tom springs, of course, well over 100 degrees. highs today across the bay area, where we have the excessive heat from concord, livermore, antioch and fairfield today, well over 100 degrees. 97 in vallejo, 99 yesterday novato. today, it'll be almost as hot for you there, 98 in napa, 101 for santa rosa. san francisco, 71, looking at 80 today in oakland. a couple of degrees warmer, but still, you will have that breeze, should be kind of nice in san mateo at 83, palo alto, 87. looking at temperatures right at the coast, only in the 60s. the accuweather seven-day forecast, our temperatures spread with us again tomorrow at about 40 degrees. today maybe 44 degrees bread, then into monday, temperatures really coming down, i think you'll notice the change tomorrow and then the rest of the work week will feature heat relief with temperatures from the 60s at the coast to the upper 80s inland. simon one of those areas, liz,

you know have a chance to work from home in the aloha state. hawaii officials are hoping to bring in a diverse workforce through a program called movers and shockers. applicants when a free round- trip and will be required to stay in hawaii for the month of october. required, so difficult, right? they will also be required to volunteer with a local nonprofit. this is the second round for this program. you might remember that the first round pulled in 90,000 applications. if you want to apply for this one, the deadline is on monday. a southern california youth sports leader is being recognized with an honorary espy award. the espy's tonight on abc7 and

we have a report now from our sister station in la. >> reporter: behind every player, there's a coach and behind every coach, there is somebody like audrey ritter, the little league president, who is now also a recipient of the espy's award. >> they presented me with an actual espy, and i'm so proud of it, i haven't dropped it yet. >> reporter: audrey ritter received an honorary espy for volunteering as a youth sports leader and volunteering for her community in northridge as president of the little league frenzy when the pandemic hits, audrey was the key to getting these kids back on the field. >> with with with with with wit tireless one that went through all of the rules and figured out how she could bring some sort of program back here. >> reporter: the program includes audrey's husband, whose a coach, no one knows more about her devotion to the

petaluma, san rafael, into american canyon, and napa, where san jose and campbell could see temperatures in the low 90s, sam martin and gilroy, hotter than that, the excessive heat warning, same timeframe, and until monday though, out by the delta there, and also through upper leg. elsewhere, looking at inland valleys, over 100 to perhaps 108, 110. look at that deck of low clouds and fog. that is going to mitigate some of that heat around the bay, spare the air alert today, poor air quality, where we receive the hottest numbers, this is san jose, of course a clear start, 57 in oakland, 59 in san jose. emeryville this morning, some sun, some clouds, low 50s in novato, and that's about a 40 degrees cooldown from yesterday. 62 in concord. everyone starting out a bit cooler today, so the marine layer gave us an extra push overnight. 74 in san ramon, 69 2:00 or 3:00 of over 100

degrees from concord to livermore. 95 and gilroy. a whole lot of cooling tonight inland, we will talk about the deck of low clouds, whatever one cools off in the next few minutes. liz? lisa, thank you. a flex alert is in effect for californians from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm tonight. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley is in east bay with more on how people are getting through this heat. >> reporter: from squirrels sprawled out in the shade to ravens frolicking in the backyard sprinkler, expect wild animals to show up in your neighborhood this weekend and a desperate search for water in a heat wave. >> unlike us, many of these animals can't sweat. you'll see some interesting behavior. might see some flat squirrels laying down on the sidewalk on my see some birds open mouth and panting. we do see, depending on certain cases, an uptick in certain hospital patients during extreme heat. >> reporter: when the wildlife experience says it's okay to set out containers of water for animals and birds. they will find it if they

needed. people will seek refuge and air- conditioning, including cooling centers and far east contra costa county and alameda counties, where masks are required indoors. plants also need some extra ep frequently, since we are in a drought, you definitely don't want to do it that often. but when you water, really water deep. if you've got to plan, i'd wait until tuesday after the heatwave is over and you don't want to fertilize right now. these plants in pots, they have to be watered every day. sometimes twice a day. >> reporter: giving plants extra water is a challenge, especially when water districts are decreasing water use. perhaps collect water from your shower in a bucket. contra costa water district this week is asking customers to conserve by 10%. >> anytime we are dealing with a dry year, the local along with heat waves, and we just need to make sure we are adjusting how we are using our water. >> reporter: i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> the cdc is making a big push to get students back in the

classroom this fall with new mask guidelines. vaccinated students, teachers and other class members do not need to wear masks, but i was abc7 news reporter explained, the recommendations are causing some confusion. >> reporter: a big shift by the cdc as the agency urges schools to return to in person learning the fall. the cdc issuing new guidance now saying, students, teachers, and staff who are fully vaccinated will not need to wear masks, but children two and older who aren't vaccinated should still mask up. the new guidelines are really just recommendations. the cdc saying, it'll be up to school districts to make their own rules. >> kids under 12 were unvaccinated kids wearing a mask, my guess, it'll be driven a lot by local conditions. here in vermont, with very few infections, probably not necessary. in missouri, with a la outbreak probably would be really helpful. >> reporter: in california, schools will continue to require masks, but in arizona, a ban on mask mandates and schools. according to the cdc, only 5%

of children aged 12 to 15 with at least one shot, 2.5% with 16 and 17-year-olds, also with at least one dose. from coast-to-coast, millions of children under 12, who can't get the vaccine yet. meantime, the delta variant rapidly spreading in under vaccinated areas. at mercy hospital in springfield, missouri, there are more patients hospitalized with covid-19 than at any other point in the pandemic. >> we are seeing a lot of more intimations this go-round, a lot of healthier people, younger people, in their 20s, 30s, 40s. they are getting this delta variant. >> reporter: missouri, among 10 states that have seen coital hospital admissions jumped more than 20% in the past two weeks. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. >> reporter: san francisco know it's reopened for business. chinatown was hit especially hard during the pandemic. restaurants and shops closed in

the annual chinese new year's parade was canceled this year. now stores and restaurants are back open and they are welcoming back visitors. >> people come from all over the world to visit chinatown, not just during the parade and the activities during lunar new year, but just when you come to san francisco, you want to visit chinatown. it's one of the oldest, most incredible, rich history tiny towns in the world. >> the chinese chamber of commerce at the 100 east cafe. it was within a week of closing last year estate open things to funding from the city on the landlord to offer a big discount on the rent. new this morning, a downtown miami courthouse has been shut down following a safety inspection stemming from the surfside condo building collapse. the court filing describes the building as temporarily evacuated, and a closure order was issued for 16 and above. meantime, one of the families impacted by the condo collapse has something to be happy about.

happening today, a giant block party in san francisco to celebrate california's reopening. it's called the love revival. new murals and the die by local artists will be unveiled, and there will be live music from a new orleans child swing band and keyboardist scott timmerman, who has worked with the likes of the grateful dead. it's all happening on the corner of haight and masonic streets from 1:00 to fix the clock today. lisa, it should be decent weather, although everyplace around the bay area seems to be different right now. >> so true, the southwesterly winds were growing yesterday. you can see the flag here, 10 to 12 miles per hour for friday afternoon, over 20 miles an hour and gusty in spots. but that still is localized. we are looking at heat inland, i'll tell you how hot it's going to get, we are talking sizzling heat, coming up.
