we are joined live at google headquarters in mountain view with more on the return to the office. >> reporter: good morning. it is a big day in mountain view for this large tech company, google, maybe you have heard of it. it has some controversy. some employees filling pressure . they say it is voluntary and they can work from home and they could return to the office, but some google employees saying that there been called back to the office as one executive has moved to new zealand. the tech giant will not require that workers be vaccinated, but those who provide proof can remove masks in the office and on vaccinated employees will be required to wear masks. and jessica covid-19 test every week. most google employees are expected to be back in the office by september so this is voluntary. they're asking people to return if they would like to.

rides are regulated. elon musk is due in court because of a lawsuit filed by company shareholders. the shareholders are claiming that elon musk did it to save the company from bankruptcy. he was also the board chairman of solar city at the time. the acquisition cost tesla $2.6 million. stockholders want him to repay that cost. amazon says the restore service after a global shutdown overnight for nearly two hours. shoppers cannot get past the home page and if they did, they were not able to complete any purchases. at the peak of the outage, more than 37,000 users reported having issues. there is no word on what caused the outage in the first place.

today. good morning, everyone. it is monday, july 12. we want to start the half hour off with meteorologist mike nicco. good morning. here is a look from the south beach camera. this is where i needed the wind chill wipers several time this morning thanks to the the onshore breeze. 34 miles per hour. it is a pain to drive into as we are going down 80 but it will be nice when head home to push it down. fairfield is 88 today. the rest of the east bay will be into the 80s. 73 in fremont. 79 in santa rosa. look at lakeport and ukiah, 198. this is where the most dangerous

air will be this weekend. you are under the excessive heat warning because of the high to very high risk of heat illness but that is it. no more day for you. then you will join us with comfortable temperatures. as california continues to reopen, google is reopening the bay area offices today on a voluntary basis. the tech giant will not be required workers to be vaccinated, but there are restrictions in place for unvaccinated employees. we have more outside of the google campus. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. unvaccinated workers will be required to wear a mask, but there is some controversy surrounding this reopening and it does not involve the masks. there are employees that feel like google should still allow them to work from home. they are questioning if they should be called back to the office, especially adding to the tension as one google executive announced that he plans to work remotely from new zealand. employees can request to work

remotely and it will be approving, a percentage of the house request, but most employees will be required to work in the offices in mountain view, so the competition to get approved is adding attention to the work place. the cafeteria will open for the first time since the pandemic. this will be for those employees who choose to return and the big shuttle buses that you have seen traveling from san francisco to the south bay, they will start running again today. this is the soft opening. today, employees are turning up voluntarily. they will be expected here two days a week a starting in september, except for those approved to work remotely. the new school year is about a few weeks away. california says that all teachers and students, regardless of vaccination

status, will need to wear a mask in the classroom. that is despite the cdc guidance saying that the masks were not required. >> this is one of the strongest prevention strategies we have seen with so many california students not vaccinated, having them all wear masks to start the year will give us the best chance of getting us all back to school. so that is why california has chosen to go with masks. there are strong scientifically driven and proven prevention strategy, but they do not have a requirement for physical distancing in our schools and that will help us get all kids across the state back in just four or five weeks. >> is this a health strategy or is it away to make sure that unvaccinated folks are not traveling? there should be some pressure on unvaccinated people. >> one of the benefits and this

pandemic has taken a toll on all of us differently. making sure that young people are coming back to school on even ground, where you don't see us singling students out for being vaccinated or unvaccinated, depending on where you are in the state. this does help us work through some of the early concerns and we have heard from administrators since the announcement of the decision on friday in schools across the state how great it is to have something that is simple and clear. that they do not have to plan around distancing or come up with special programs to determine who is vaccinated and who is not. >> there are mixed messages about wearing the mask and in l.a. their recommendations to wear the mask indoors. what are you doing in your personal life? if you go to trader joe's, how do you manage the mask situation? >> that is an excellent question.

thank you for asking. i choose to wear my mask indoors. i have three young kids who are not vaccinated. one is 11. i worry. i choose to do what is simple for me, just to wear a mask indoors. >> he says that he is hopeful that a vaccine will be available for children under 12 buy halloween. he says he does not anticipate any further lockdowns or restrictions because of the delta variant. if you have state unemployment and if it's, you now have to prove that you're looking for a job. they had wave that requirement when people are looking for work. they recognize that it is at odds with the stay-at-home order in place. now that the state has lifted most of the restrictions, recipients are being asked to start the job hunt and attest that they are doing so. growing unrest in cuba. purchase over the weekend. cuba has fallen on hard economicprice hikes

during the pandemic and people have had enough. protesters took to the streets in a country that is notorious for cracking down on dissent. it is the largest demonstration that cuba has seen in three decades. the president blames u.s.. cuban-americans in florida are also protesting. >> i want to see the president to do something now. >> we have to make sure that the message today moving forward is not lost and that the true nature of this barbaric regime is exposed. >> reporter: a marco rubio criticized the president for not taking action. he tweeted that the people of cuba bravely take the streets against 62 years of socialist tyranny. 12 hours later, president biden has yet to say anything about it.
