angeles county. a mask mandate returning this weekend. this may be just a look ahead at what might come elsewhere. sacramento, yolo, and fresno counties now saying that they are recommending that people wear masks in all public indoor settings. abc7 reporter matt boone is live at sfo where a lot of travelers are coming and going today from l.a.. >> reporter: if you are heading to l.a. this weekend, don't forget your mask. you are going to really need it starting on sunday. this mask mandate is going into effect at 11:50 9 pm on a saturday. masks will be required indoors again. some bay area counties could be joining them soon. not yet. alameda marin county health officers say they are considering recommending masking indoors for everyone. it would be a recommendation. san mateo county tells us it is considering changes to its guidance. other health departments we have reached out to say they are planning to stick with state guidelines for

now which do not require indoor masking for vaccinated people. here is what an infectious disease expert from stanford university says about a mask mandate happening here. >> i do think that in certain situations, it might be helpful to suggest indoor masking. i am not sure about a mask mandate. we are not there yet. >> reporter: l.a. county decided to require masks again now that they are seeing numbers of covid cases they have not seen since early march. cases are going up in the bay area but not at a rate like in l.a. the vaccination rate is higher here too but officials are making a push for those who are not vaccinated to go out and get that shot to have a defense against this spreading virus. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. ucsf just reinstated its indoor mask mandate after rising number of cases of the delta variant were reported there. the mandate applies to the school staff and 6000 medical students, regardless of

vaccination status. the school has not said how many students or staff have been infected but we do know 89% of staff and students have been vaccinated. officials expect to see breakthrough cases. if you have not been vaccinated yet, the city of san francisco is bringing the vaccine to you. >> there are a number of drop insights around the city. abc7 reporter melanie woodrow explains how these locations will help groups it the hardest. >> reporter: san francisco health and city officials want to close the vaccination disparity gap. >> with this new delta variant, we will see higher infections of those who are not vaccinated and we can anticipate there will be at least 250 more deaths and disproportionally, those people will be african-american and latino. >> reporter: mayor london breed says every person at san francisco general hospital right now being treated for covid-19 did not get vaccinated. san francisco is one of the most dense cities in the country with one of the lowest

he may be on someone's personal property near the park. now to the extreme weather gripping much of the west. from utah to oregon to california, we are all feeling the impact of climate change in the conditions that come with it. jobina fortson is at the live desk. >> wildfires are burning right now and a dozen states. the largest is the bootleg byron oregon. it has destroyed at least 21 homes as it continues to spread. firefighters from san francisco have been called up to help. this is video you are seeing right now on your screen of them leaving for oregon yesterday. and parts of utah, the water supply is so low, towns have to enforce drinking water. low water levels in the great salt lake forest boats out of the water. >> have you ever seen that much shoreline? >> never. i have been out here since 75 and have never seen this. >> it could be two years before boats can return to the lake.

the drop could impact food prices as well. 98% of wheat grown in the u.s. is located in places dealing with the drought. a jet fuel shortage could hurt firefighting efforts in oregon. jobina fortson mentioned bootleg fire burning in lake county. an airport there ran out of jet fuel on sunday and could not get more supply until wednesday. the delivery was delayed because of a national shortage. the sheriff says the fuel shortage has not stopped firefighting efforts but it could have an impact if this continues. the dry is only getting drier. the new report dashing our hopes of desperately needed rain for a long time to come. attempted abductions and it is caught on camera. how a man try to lure little girl into his car and the person able to get in the way. let's take a look at some neighborhood temperatures this morning from 50 in sunnyside to 53 in many areas. not only in a san francisco but in many neighborhoods. warmer

we are back. climate experts with noaa said california draft is expected to last for months. there is a 60% chance of a la niña event this winter which would bring more cool and dry conditions. this is a recent drone video of the salton sea in southern california. here in the bay area, nearly all counties are in the worst or exceptional drought category and it is not just california. climatologists say 46% of the strategic u.s. is in a state of drought. look at all of that shoreline there. that is not supposed to be uncovered. i want to show you the latest

before willow avenue. injuries have been reported. at least one lane is block right now. i was following a caltrans camera and it is very backed up. a live picture here at the bay bridge toll plaza. very empty right no a different trend from what we are seeing. i want to say that is partly due to a crash in hercules. when you have that big buildup on 80, things are light which means they will be light at the toll plaza. a little bit of a chain reaction there. check out this floating head that is looming over tokyo. people took video of this unusual site at a park. it happened earlier today. it is actually a hot-air balloon with a face on it. japanese arts collective is behind the project. it can be seen from afar without people having to gather at one site. > >> okay. a mom carrying a lot of weight on her back, literally. a video you might find really

another is in tacoma city after a man tried to lower her children with a snow cone. this attempted kidnapping was caught on surveillance video. the woman's daughter says the man told her to get into the back seat of his car if she wanted to treat but then big brother stepped in and stopped her from getting inside. the car just drove off two bay area men have been charged with plotting to blow up the democratic headquarters in sacramento. federal prosecutors say napa resident ian rodgers whom you see here and jared copeland of vallejo hoped that

would be the first in a series of politically motivated attacks. both men now face multiple charges including conspiracy to destroy a building by fire or explosives. rodgers is now also charged with possession of unregistered destructive devices and three counts of possession of machine guns. in january, law enforcement officials searched rodgers' home in napa. they see used 45 to 50 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition and five pipe bombs. rodgers has been in custody since then. new details on the south bay. authorities believe they averted another mass shooting after the arrest of a suspected prowler. wesley charles martinez of los gatos was taken into custody. this comes after a campbell business owner reported someone lurking around his parking lot, peering into cars. that business owner shared surveillance video the incident with abc7 news. police obtained martinez and found an arsenal of weapons inside his truck that includes a pipe bomb, two illegal ar style rifles, a glock handgun and bullets with the words cop

killer on them. there was a manifesto which stated a desire to, quote, wipe out the black, hispanic, and jewish populations. >> a lot of bad things could have happened. things could have played out completely differently. he could have shot up the cops trying to get away. a lot of different scenarios. >> martinez has been charged with seven felonies. he is being held in santa clara county jail on $300,000 bail. this next video is impossibly adorable or terrifying depending on your point of view. >> this man spotted a possum carrying a letter of five joey's. take a look at the video. it was first posted on tiktok. you can see the mom tiptoeing across the wall while the babies are clinging to her back. possum baby survivals depends on the ability to cling to its mom's for as she searches for food.

our valleys. we are watching sunday and monday for a slight chance of some dry thunderstorms. we will get to future radar and a second. 81 in los gatos, the warm spot. 69, the cool spot in santa cruz. if you go round the santa clara valley, 71 in sunnyvale. temperatures in the low to mid 70s for most of the peninsula. we are looking at upper 50s with the bulk of the cloud cover at the coast here. we have seen more sunshine for downtown. how about some mid-60s? the breezes will keep us in the upper 50s on the northbay coast but the lack of breezes will allow the interior valleys to warm up a little more than the last several days. mid-70s to mid-80s. the breeze will keep richmond and berkeley and oakland right there at the top of the 60s, same with san leandro. in our inland valleys, we are going 80 in a san ramon 88 in ocand brentwood.

the question the bay area is wondering after l.a. reissues its mask mandate indoors. local health experts are giving us a little clarity this morning. scooter safety. a new change that is giving you a puzzle before you can ride. that weekend warm-up. a live look outside. we are getting back to a little bit of a summerfield but that also may include the threat of thunderstorms. mike has been telling us why these are different from the thousands that we saw late last summer. hopefully they don't cause fires. we don't need that. >> no we don't. the big difference is the last couple of times we have had clusters of thunderstorms like that, it was energy and moisture that came from tropical storms and hurricanes. we don't have that is time. that is why we are not worried about it. we will take a look at live. our future radar coming up. we will show you where the best guess of where one of these pop-

the big question is what do bay area counties think about this? how are they responding? >> reporter: they are keeping it status quo for now but if you are traveling to l.a. this weekend, don't forget your mask. this goes into effect late tomorrow night, basically sunday. it will be 11:59 pm tomorrow night. you can eat indoors still in l.a. but you will have to wear the mask when you are not eating and drinking. keep that in mind if you are on the move. the bay area is seeing an increase in covid cases and officials tell us they are watching the situation but they're not putting mask mandates in place here at this time. alameda county and marin county say they are thinking about recommending masks inside, not mandating. san mateo says changes are being considered. here is what we heard in san francisco. >> we do ask that people who are not fascinated when they go indoors, wear a mask. those who are vaccinated, we don't necessarily have a mask requirement further than that but we are looking at a change

term. some exceptions will be allowed but all other unvaccinated people won't be allowed to participate in in person campus activities. at san jose states, an updated mask policy is in effect. fully vaccinated people are no longer required to wear masks on campus. unvaccinated people must ask up indoors and outside when they can't social distance. canada masonry open for tourists. the country's prime minister said today it's positive covid vaccination trends continue in the country could welcome vaccinated travelers by september. sfo is stepping up to monitor covid-19 variants. thanks to a pilot program with the state, arriving international travelers will be provided with three free covid test kits. >> los angeles county health officers are urging people to reconsider travel to states that have high levels of new covid cases and that includes florida and nevada. with variants surgeon, some san francisco teenagers are fighting back against vaccine

incident. >> reporter: former 49er richard sherman outside of his in law's home in redmond, washington. you can see here as he tries to burst through the front door. >> open the door! >> it is not immediately clear why sherman wanted to enter the home. his father-in-law told police he pepper sprayed sherman and picked up his gun during the incident. officers arrested sherman early wednesday morning. during yesterday's court hearing, sherman-based charges related to domestic violence, dui, and resisting arrest. he has been released from jail. sherman does not have to be in court for today's hearing on his case. volunteers will continue to search for a missing man this morning. they are planning to meet ll h renvase areaof philip kreycik. the 37-year-old father went for a run in pleasanton ridge regional park last saturday

and has not been seen since. police and the alameda county sheriff's office have ended the official search. kreycik 's family believes he might be on somebody's personal property near that park. cal fire has updated the size of the dixie buyer that is burning near the 2018 camp fire near the border of butte county and plumas county. it is now approaching i thousand acres. the dixie fire is burning in steep and inaccessible terrain. firefighters are making some progress. it is now 7% contained and it is burning away from populated areas. new minotaur evacuation orders remain in place for the high lakes and philbrook areas and plumas county. the state's largest buyer has grown another 5000 acres. the beckwourth fire is also burning and plumas county and it is now more than 100,000 acres and 68% contained. this video from the santa maria fire department shows the strong wind howling as the fire rages nearby. you can keep track of all of these fires with our exclusive abc7 wildfire tracker . the interactive map shows you where

mall on monday. as soon as they parked, two men approached. >> two guys ran out and went toward me. it felt so fast. i close my eyes and opened it and the car was gone. everything was gone. the woman and her friend were left bruised and shaken. this is not the first time something like this has happened. emeryville police say since may, there have been three robbery and carjacking victims at the bay street parking garage . there have been several armed thefts at various stores. today marks 45 years since 26 children and their bus driver escaped from a buried truck trailer in the east bay. they were taken in the chowchilla schoolbus kidnapping in 1976. three armed kidnappers abducted the kids and the bus driver in the central valley then lock them up in livermore. this morning, we are going into the abc7 news archive. >> they left on a bus. they returned on a bus. they are safe.
