wear a mask indoors even if you are vaccinated. >> we are a little upset about it. people are not getting vaccinated. >> there is frustration over the new recommendation. >> you are watching abc7 news at 5:00. the seven bay area counties are urging vaccinated people to wear masks indoors.masks indoor. and the change comes as a delta variance reds and covid cases are rising across the state. california's test positive the rate was 2.3% and now it is 3.7%. more than 4600 new cases, nearly twice as many as a week ago. let's begin with stephanie

sierra. >> reporter: we are keeping a close eye on our data dashboard. to put it all into perspective, our case rates of more than doubled since the state reopened just a month ago. most of this transmission is stemming directly from the delta variant. >> reporter: masks are back for anyone vaccinated indoors. that is a new recommendation from health officials in nearly every bait area county.area cou. the indoor masking recommendation is adopted in alameda, contra costa, marin, san mateo, and the city of berkeley. >> that is the main cause for concern. why is this different now? the delta variant is the difference. >> reporter: dr. susan phillips says the cases are eight times more than what they were three

weeks ago. she expects the city will average 80 new cases per day >> how many ours from the variant? >> i am very concerned about the delta variant. i do believe that is the cause of these increase cases. >> reporter: there are roughly 4 new cases for every 100,000 people. >> in our county public health lab, 43% of the cases we could sequence where the more transmissible darien, delta variant. >> reporter: according to the data analysis, a bay area was averaging 200 cases per day and now it is more than double to 594. >> how likely do you think this recommendation will turn into a mandate? >> it has shown that the cases go up first in a few weeks

later we see hospitalizations. we will need three or four weeks to see what is happening in san francisco and make sure our healthcare workers are not overwhelmed. >> most of the transmission is stemming from the delta variant but the doctor is worried about or unvaccinated populations. >> we have tens of thousands of san franciscans eligible for vaccines that have not gotten it. >> reporter: 43% of all new sequence to cases across the state are stemming from the delta variant. it is first nationally. the delta variant is responsible for 58% of all new infections. as bay area counties move back toward mask recommendations, it is important to look at why that is happening. we go to ■ontra osta county were hospitalizations have

jumped. in fact, the county health officer says people not fully vaccinated are 20 times more likely to get covid than those who are fully vaccinated. >> reporter: this doctor has seen his share of heartbreak and loss. after weeks of low patient counts, he finds what's happening concerning. >> the vast majority of people are unvaccinated. that has been the driving force of our new patients at the hospital. >> reporter: he has 24 patients nearly half of all the hospitalized covid patients and contra costa county? >> our patients have gone to over 50 hospitalized patients with covid in the last now and. >> reporter: the makeup of hospitalized patients has

evolved for mostly older people often with underlying conditions to those much younger . >> people going to the hospital are almost exclusively unvaccinated people. we are seeing younger people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s really sick and in the hospital. >> reporter: there are similar upticks in the number of hospitalized covid patients. the vast majority are not fully vaccinated. and while the increase in hospitalizations is concerning, relatively few patients are being treated in intensive care units >> i think we have three of four on ventilators. it is high flow oxygen. the majority are not icu patients. >> reporter: the more people are being hospitalized for 74% are fully vaccinated. it means that the covid fight

is not over. local businesses can continue to make their own worlds. we spoke to small business owners in novato. >> did you ever stop wearing a mask inside? >> no. never. >> reporter: is it a good idea? >> yes. >> if you think that purpose, protection is good, do it. >> many people we talked with said if there recommendation becomes a mandate, they will follow with. the alameda county court system will be consistent with today's recommendation. on monday, everyone will be required to wear a mask regardless of their vaccinated status. you can asked the vaccine team at https://abc7news.com/ .

a 14-year-old boy is under arrest accused of killing his mother and seriously injuring his father. police were called out on sylvester drive just after midnight and found the couple. they had been stabbed. 30 minutes later they found the couple son covered in blood. investigators have not released the mode of but have this message for those families going through difficulties. >> i don't want to speculate about what occurred here are put blame. i will say that yes, everybody needs help and if you think whether it's your child or yourself that needs assistance, reach out. there are resources. >> the names of the victims are not being released. oakland police are investigating two attacks that happened on the same block in chinatown. this was at night and harrison. police have not provided any

details yet. and this was yesterday also near ninth and harrison. two then robbed a pistol with the man and also of bystander that stepped in to help. police say they have dedicated resources to preventing and solving these kinds of crimes. >> throughout the city of oakland we have an increase in robberies throughout the whole city and we also have an increase of 91% of carjackings. a lot of our resources are going to every single thing that we can. i know that definitely with the chief, he has put more police presence in the area. >> no one has been arrested in either case so far. in san francisco, a gunman followed the couple home from the mall and robbed them. you will see the story only on

abc 7. >> reporter: that is the voice of the woman in this video requested we protect your identity. after the traumatic events when she and her husband were driving home after shopping at stonerstown galleria and noticed a car following them to hit the back of their vehicle. >> at one point i see they've got guns. and then i tell my husband correct back >> two men tackled the woman's husband to the ground. >> i said, take whatever you want and don't hurt him. >> reporter: they stole his phone, keys, and rolex watch. >> i don't want my kids to lose the dad. >> reporter: in april i reported on the woman who was followed and attacked for her handbag and jewelry. within that's a week of father was held at gunpoint outside

his home after being followed home from lunch and walnut creek. despite being unable to sleep, and terrified the perpetrators will come back, this woman is thankful to the homeowners the provided videos to police. she hopes that will help someone else. >> i want to protect my family. i want the people to know what happened to me and to be aware and protect their families. if the same thing happens, please call 911. >> reporter: the search for the perpetrators continues. for $150 million set aside by california to fight hate against the asian pacific islander community. they have reported over the crimes that have targeted the
