moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. dry grass, a chance for lightning and in one bay area community, a fire station is closed for the weekend despite the high fire danger. good evening and thank you for joining us. you're watching abc 7 news at 5:00 live on abc 7, hulu live and wherever you happen to stream. a red flag warning just took effect for much of the bay area. >> live doppler 7 is tracking it all. we're seeing it in the form of high clouds right now. over the bay area, we do not have any lightning strikes to speak of. it's a different story over to the east. you can see the moisture streaming in from the south along tahoe over the past couple of hours we have had a couple fire strikes around the tamarack fire. we're watching that closely. to the east of fresno, you can

see several lightning strikes. right now we're watching a line of moisture that's moving in from the south. it's falling apart, but we're still tracking the chance of the threat of lightning. that red flag warning is now in effect until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. we'll take a look at when we have the highest chance for lightning in the full forecast in a few minutes. first, that red flag warning comes just as a key fire station in the fire prone oakland hills is closed at least for the weekend thanks to a malfunctioning water heater. this is unfortunate timing. >> reporter: it sure is. here in the east bay, no sign of lightning, but it is getting warm, well into the 90s. the winds are starting to pick up and that means fire departments all over the bay area are on high alert. that includes in oakland, but one key fire station there is closed for the weekend. this sign says it all at

station 25 in the oakland hills. a station closed up tight. no firefighters inside. just in time for a red flag warning. >> i'm incredibly concerclosed. >> reporter: zach is the president of the oakland firefighter's union. he says without hot firefighters and paramedics can't be safe after returning from calls. >> they can't decon -- >> reporter: station 25's water heater was supposed to be fixed friday but stopped working again. the soonest it will be repaired now is monday. >> it's incredibly disappointing that our fire station is not up to par. we know if there is a wildfire, we know how fast they travel. and every single second counts. >> reporter: for now, the fire crews from station 25 have been

temporarily relocated to another station nearly two miles away. it's a reality that doesn't sit well with residents who know their neighborhood is tinder dry and there's lightning on the way. >> it's unfortunate that the water heater is broken in fire station, which needs water. that shouldn't be happening in this area, period. >> reporter: they worry that somebody's life could be in danger in this area? >> absolutely. with no fire engine in station 25, the response is going to be coming from further away and that is always dangerous. >> reporter: late this afternoon, we received a statement from the oakland fire department on behalf of the chief, quote, the unexpected closure of station 25 is frustrating and concerning. the department is working diligently to immediately fix the issues that need to be corrected at station 25 while ensuring we meet our mandated

response times. now, according to the oakland firefighter's union, the issue with that water heater is just one of many and they would like the city to make a stronger commitment to fixing the infrastructure at the fire department. live in the east bay, abc 7 news. >> a story we will continue to follow. laura, many thanks to you. to developing news now, coming out of the sierra where the wildfire has forced the closure of 26 miles of the pacific coast trail. officials are concerned about erratic winds and the threat of dry lightning. that fire was sparked by lightning on july forth. you can see here new video shows the inferno that's been fueled by the dry winds there. there has been no containment. meanwhile, firefighters are making some progress against the dixie fire in butte county. cal fire said today several

containment lines are holding and the fire is now 15% under control. flames have also scorched more than 15,000 acres. you can see from this vantage point, cal fire video shows an air tanker dropping fire retardant. it is near the burn scar of the 2018 camp fire. there are a dozen fires burning across the state right now. you can see a live map of all the updates with our live fire tracking by clicking on this icon here. you can find it on our website, abc7news.com. new covid cases are surging, fueled by the highly contagious delta variant. communities with low vaccination rates are being hit hard. trevor. >> reporter: covid cases are surging nationwide and the delta variant is sparking the uptick. especially where the

vaccination rates fall below the national average. but 9 states and territories are reporting increases of at least 10%. >> this delta virus is really a cause of greater concern. this is not last year's virus. >> reporter: hospitalizations are up too with unvaccinated americans making up more than 97% of covid patients as the national vaccination rate plummets to just over 500,000 a day. >> i'm worried we're starting to see increasingly these surges within the unvaccinated population, that we will continue to see that unless we get a hold of this pandemic by getting more people vaccinated. >> reporter: concerned that misinformation is fueling vaccine hesitancy. >> stop and verify your sources before you post stories online. >> reporter: the fda is now accelerating the review process to fully approve the pfizer vaccine. dr. anthony fauci saying it could come in a matter of

26th. in the east bay, at least one person is dead following a shooting in walnut creek. police received several 911 calls just after 1:30 a.m. about shots fired on main street. when they arrived, they found the 4 victims. so far no word on what led up to the shooting or if anyone has been arrested. one day after a shooting outside nationals park in washington, d.c., white house press secretary threw out the first pitch today. she was scheduled for the honor before the shooting and she threw out the first pitch ahead of the restart of last night's game between the nationals and the padres. the teams are having a double header today. the nationals invited saki for william and mary day which celebrates her alma mater in virginia. the list is just about set. california releases the list of candidates who qualify for the recall election. one person who said they are

strikes over the bay area. there you can see much of california, that moisture has been streaming in from the south all morning long. along lake tahoe, there are those lightning strikes, about 5 over the last two hours. we'll monitor that overnight tonight. we're seeing a lot of lightning over to the east of fresno. 17 lightning strikes as they move into the mountains. we're watching this line of showers. thankfully it's falling apart. we do need rain, but the threat with these showers is they come with lightning. we don't want to see any of these storms move into the bay area and bring threat of lightning. we're also watching moisture off the coast right now. this will likely move north overnight tonight and first thing tomorrow morning. this area of moisture would likely bring us our highest threat for isolated lightning strikes. we're watching the warm temperatures too away the coast. we're in the 90s

96, 91 in san ramon. here's the red flag warning. it's now in effect, lasting until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow evening from the north bay mountains and east bay tills and santa cruz mountains. as you get higher in elevation, you have drier and warmer conditions. here's our lightning strike risk threat. we'll go overnight. you don't notice anything on the map. tomorrow morning by about 8:00, 9:00 a.m., there you see pops of gray indicating a low chance, but the chance is there for lightning, even around lunchtime. there's a low chance of lightning. after 1:00 p.m., any lightning threat, it is out of here. it's a 4-hour window we're watching. 8:00 a.m. to noon tomorrow for any lightning strike to move through. if we did see lightning, it would be very isolated in nature. mainly in the 50s.
