solutions. this iab we're having a lot of fires every year and they're very bad. >> residents and firefighters already weary, bay area crews also on high alert as the threat of lightning prompts a red flag warning. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. you are watching abc7 news at 11:00 live here on abc7 and wherever you stream. right away let's get to abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma with more on that red flag warning. drew. >> yeah. thankfully so far we have not seen lightning strikes in the bay area. we have seen thunderstorms develop in the sierra and that risk does continue across california for tomorrow. live doppler 7 along with satellite now showing you the

monsoonal moisture moved in in the form of high clouds. again we do not have lightning strikes locally, but we're watching more moisture move in from the south. the wider picture you can see that rain moving through central california an cointo rtovnit into the day on monday. it's for that fact that the risk is still there for isolated lightning strikes. that red flag warning does continue until 5 p.m. tomorrow. we'll go hour by hour in future weather, show you when the possibility there is across california for lightning in the full accuweather forecast. three lightning-sparked complex fires burned in the bay area last summer, something that has made some residents even more cautious this weekend. here's abc7 news reporter j.r. stone. >> reporter: dark clouds in a dark sky but no signs of dry lightning sunday night while we were recording in the east bay. this as a red flag warning is in effect for much of the bay area. >> brown to dark brown, just

dry as can be. >> very dry. >> reporter: on mt. diablo that brown and dry terrain can be seen in every direction, a sign telling visitors the fire danger is high and even those working here tell us the slight breeze is a definite concern. >> it changed almost what seems overnight from green to gold and then it's just steadily getting darker and darker. >> reporter: in the south bay this is what it looked like at the lick observatory on mt. hamilton last august during the scu lightning complex fires, an observatory that is currently only open in a limited capacity due to the damage sustained, now a threat of lightning. >> we are going to be at a heightened vigilance. we will be maintaining a lookout throughout the day and night. >> reporter: dr. paul linum is an astronomer who was interrupted by cal fire as we spoke with him. >> sorry. go ahead, copernicus. >> tower is going out of

service. >> reporter: no problems, but a crew just giving a heads up as their fire watch for the day ended. everyone with the hope that there won't be lightning in these skies or striking these dry grounds. in walnut creek j.r. stone, abc7 news. at least five homes burned tonight in lake county in a five block area of clearlake oaks starting just before 6:00. witnesses say the fire started at one home and spread to others in windy conditions. firefighters contained it to the block where it started. the red cross was called in to provide assistance to three families and a dozen pets. the cause is still under investigation. firefighters up and down the state are already busy this fire season as more than a dozen fires burn in california. the majority are in the northern part of the state and several were spark ad by lightning. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman has more now on the

fire fights. >> reporter: men and machines racing nation sets the scene tonight in california as 13 wildfires burn across our dry tinder state. >> does the mixture of hot, dry and drought. >> reporter: benjamin bell, one among many from the dixie fire, a region recovering still from the disaster of 2018. what you see here, a time lapse video of those flames actually making their own weather. the fire has moved surprisingly fast. >> you get all ready to move all your stuff and then the fire is already, move your stuff back in and then another one. that's kind of crazy. >> reporter: to the south there's another fire called the beckwourth in heavy country west of reno at more than 105,000 acres burned. there is some good news tonight, 82% containment. but now the bad news, the still smaller tamarac fire 20 miles south of lake tahoe has exploded. anyone in the way of it flustered. >> it looked like they said the fire was like five, six miles

away and about an hour later it was right on us. >> reporter: the tamarac began with a lightning strike on july 4th , but this weekend high winds gave it new life it. has burned more than 18,000 acres since yesterday. tonight the flames have burned ten homes and threaten 200 others and markeleyville itself forcing more evacuations. for those already gone too much time to think and worry. >> i think about our forests burning down and disappearing, you know, the trees and the animals and everything. >> reporter: in terms of this fire season it appears we have only just begun. in san francisco, wayne freedman, abc7 news. >> what a sight to see. you can see live updates on all of the fires burning in california with our wildfire tracker. just click the icon at our website, www.abc7news.com. moving on now, this was the first weekend with the bay area's new masking rules in

effect. your health amid the pandemic is one of the key things we're focused on as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. the counties of alameda, contra costa, marin, san francisco, san mateo, santa clara and sonoma are all recommending masking indoors for everyone whether vaccinated or not. officials issued the recommendation out of an abundance of caution with new cases on the rise. they say they will revisit the decision in the coming weeks. health officials say this is not a mask mandate. meantime los angeles county does have a mask mandate and that went into effect today. people have to mask up indoors regardless of their vaccination status. all of this comes as covid cases and hospitalizations rise as the delta variant spreads. l.a. county health officials estimate 4 million residents are not vaccinated, but many of those are children. the mask requirement goes against the cdc's rule

vaccinated people don't have to wear masks. >> yeah. i think everyone's there. it's just annoying. i think they're stupid. >> i never really took it off in the first t becae that ial >> now the l.a. county sheriff said his deputies will not enforce the mandate. he says it is not backed by science. instead he is asking for voluntary compliance. dr. fauci claimed today that misinformation about the vaccines is getting in the way of the vaccination effort. >> if we had had the pushback for vaccines the way we're seeing on certain media, we probably would still have smallpox. >> this weekend facebook responded to the biden administration's claims that social media is killing people by not doing more to combat misinformation. in an online post a company spokesperson said that, "for people on facebook vaccine hesitancy has declined 50% and

they are becoming more accepting of vaccines every day." a cdc panel will meet thursday to discuss whether patients with fragile immune systems should be given a booster shot. the panel will focus only on the small percentage of american adults who were organ transplant recipients, people on cancer treatments and people living with rheumatoid arthritis and leukemia. in east bay the oakland city council is set to vote tuesday on the howard terminal project that would bring the a's a new stadium, but how to pay for it is the $352 million question. that is how far apart the city and team are on who will pay for the infrastructure improvements. a's president dave kaval told abc7 the team has made concessions on affordable housing. he says a yes vote on the city's deal means a no for the

a's. >> we've actually been working in good faith to make concessions, but by the same token just something that doesn't have the details, that is not something we agree to, that is not going to consvefons continuing over ekd. it's still unclear, though, as to how much money alameda county or the state might contribute to close that funding gap. cal alum and pga golfer collin morikawa won the second major of his career today. he won the open by just two strokes. morikawa is the first player to capture two different majors on his first attempt. he won the pga championship last year. walter chun, director of the men's golf program at cal, says collin really makes us all so proud. he has put in so much time and has made many sacrifices to get to where he is today. cam cal has so much to be

anthony has more on this story. >> reporter: this sign says it all at station 25 in the oakland hills, a station closed uptight no, firefighters inside, just in time for a red flag warning. >> i'm incredibly concerned station 25 is closed. >> reporter: zac unger is president of the oakland firefighters union. he says without hot water firefighters and paramedics can't be safe when returning from calls. >> so that our members ca decon after covid calls after calls where they're in contact request blood and in contact with carcinogens after fires. >> reporter: station 25's water heater was supposed to be fixed friday but then stopped working again. the soonest it will be repaired now is monday. >> it's incredibly disappointing that our fire station is not up to par, that our infrastructure is not up to par because we know how fast wildfires travel and every second counts. >> reporter: from now the

crews from station 25 have been temporarily relocated to another station nearly two miles away. it's a reality that doesn't sit well with residents who know their neighborhood is tinder dry and there's lightning on the way. >> it's unfortunate that the water heater is broken in the fire station which needs water. that shouldn't be happening in this area, period. >> reporter: do you worry somebody's life could be in danger this weekend if a call comes in this area? >> absolutely. this neighborhood pays taxes to have a fire station right here and now with no fire engine in station 25 the response is going to be coming from further away and that is always dangerous. >> reporter: laura anthony, abc7 news. today searchers were back out in pleasanton looking for a runner who has been missing more than a week. the alameda county sheriff's office says it depl anything in

search for phillip crachick. this is video from earlier this week. crews rechecked areas ranes an of phillip and no new leads. vta employees and family members gathered today to remember co-workers killed in a mass shooting seven weeks ago. valley transportation authority buses led a procession through downtown san jose to the s.a.p. center for the private memorial service. the phrase vta family forever in our hearts was displayed on the sides of the buses. transit agencies from all over the bay area joined in the procession. nine vta workers were shot and killed by a co-worker on may 26th. today baseball was back at nationals park in washington, d.c. less than a day after a shooting outside the stadium caused chaos and confusion. abc as he elizabeth schulze takes us inside those tense moments and today's step

forward. >> reporter: today at nationals park . >> now we move forward to some baseball today. >> we will resume this game in the middle of the sixth inning. >> reporter: -- baseball was back, a far cry from the scene that unfolded here stnight. during the bottom of the sixth inning the sound of gunfire. >> 8-4. >> reporter: sending players and fans running for cover. >> we thought there was somebody above us with a gun because i mean how are we to know? >> people were looking at different places in the ballpark and then a number of people including ourselves actually ran onto the field and into the dugout because some people were doing that and that looked like the safest place to be. >> reporter: others bolting for the exits. >> a couple people started running and then as you saw more and more people running and then we heard more shots, that's when we realized it was real. >> reporter: d.c. metro police saying the shooting happened outside the third base gate. >> the action is outside of the stadium. >> reporter: an exchange of gunfire between people in two

cars, three shot, one of them a struck while she was outside the stadium. her injury was nonlife threatening. >> they ran into the stadium covered in blood which freaked out a lot of individuals. >> reporter: two of the alleged suspects in one of the cars later walking into a local hospital with gunshot wounds. police say they're known to law enforcement. >> one of the vehicles has been located and is being processed by law enforcement. >> reporter: elizabeth schulze, abc news, washington. white house press secretary jen threw out the first pitch of the game. the teams had a doubleheader today. the nationals invited her for william & mary day which er alm virginia. once again getting back to that red flag warning, what bad timing. >> yeah. we've already seen thunderstorms develop in parts

of central and northern california. that risk does continue monday as well. live doppler 7 scanning skies now, not finding thankfully any lightning. we have the monsoonal moisture from the south. you noticed it in the form of high clouds overhead. we'll have high clouds much of the day tomorrow. the wider picture, live doppler 7 showing moisture still moving in from the south pushing off to the north and all this moisture comes with the threat or risk of having isolated lightning strikes. you're not seeing any of them now, but we did a few hours ago. we're also watching a ripple of energy off or coastline that will come very close to us tomorrow, especially in the morning, and that would give us the risk again of an isolated lightning strike out there first thing on monday. a live look, we have a little fog out there. our marine layer, a little compressed but patchy fog will greet us, especially those close to the coast, tomorrow morning. temperatures right now, got that marine influence, 50s and 60s from san francisco, oakland

down to san jose at 65 degrees. away from the water a little warmer, 73 in brentwood, 70 in rewith tnderstorms across portions of california thanks to this ridge of high pressure that will sit where it is tomorrow as well and those showers and storms rotate around it in a clockwise fashion. so again, that's where we have the risk of isolated lightning strikes even here in the bay area. that red flag warning does continue until 5 p.m. tomorrow. i really do think, though, after about 1 p.m., 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon that threat of any lightning really does diminish greatly, but still the chance is there and the highest chance inner hills of the north bay, east bay and santa cruz mountains. again, everything is just so dry right now. here's a lightning strike. overnight tonight no real threat it looks like from this guidance, but as we get into the later morning and close to lunchtime, you do notice portions of the south bay, even the east bay, there is that

risk. it's a low risk to lightning, but the risk is there later in the morning, but by 1:00, 2:00 any risk is out of here and we're turning to pretty stable conditions by the end of the day monday. overnight tonight a lot of cloud cover especially close to the close, numbers dropping to the low and mid-50s. future weather shows the clouds first thing in the morning. we'll have high clouds throughout the day, but you notice much of the action or the most intense activity on our monday is well to the east of us pretty much on the california/nevada border. that's where we'll likely find most of the lightning strikes that do occur on our monday. monday afternoon it's a pretty warm day inland, 92 in concord, 96 in antioch, 94 in livermore, hit about 65 in the city, 72 oakland, 83 san jose, 84 the high in santa rosa. here's the accuweather seven- day forecast, a.m. lightning threat again. i think that threat is from about 8 a.m. to noon, so good idea to check

building a better bay area, moving forward finding solutions, this is abc7 news. teenage tennis star coco gauff is out just days before the start of the olympics testing positive right before she was set to fly to tokyo. other athletes in the olympic village have also tested positive. abc news reporter james longman has now. >> reporter: tonight tennis star coco gauff announcing that her dreams of representing team usa at the olympics have been dashed after testing positive for covid-19. she'll not be able to compete and we've seen the first positive cases among athletes inside the olympic village. two south african soccer players are now in isolation. they have to quarantine for 14 days, it would derail their competitions. the south korean official tested positive at the airport. he was fully vaccinated as all

on a mobile protest through oakland this afternoon. they're responding to friday's ruling by a texas judge who declared the program illegal and blocked any new applicants. daca blocks the deportation of people who came here as children and stayed. in group is urging congress to pass a federal d.r.e.a.m. act to defend daca. the list of candidates seeking to replace gavin newsom as governor has narrowed down and one prominent republican who said he was running is not on it. larry elder's name was nowhere to be found. the final list will be released by the state on wednesday. a spokesperson for elder says she expects him to be on the ballot, though. ballots will go out the week of august 16th and the election is on september 14th. don't forget you check out the abc7 news documentary about california's last recall in 2003. it's called "total recalled."

overnight there's little to none. we'll go into the early morning. this is about 10 a.m., 11 a.m., close to lunchtime, a low risk in parts of the bay area for lightning, but that's about it. we're talking about a three to four hour window early tomorrow morning for any lightning strikes and by afternoon everything calms down. i think most of the action will be centered around tahoe tomorrow afternoon. overnight tonight mostly cloudy skies along the coast, a mix of stars and clouds inland, mid- to upper 50s for lows and tomorrow 65 in the city, breezy, 72 in oakland, 83 in san jose, 84 in santa rosa, much warmer inland, 96 the high in antioch. here's the accuweather seven- day forecast. there's the lightning threat in the morning between 8 a.m. and noon. that storm threat is over tuesday and beyond it's a much more stable forecast wednesday, cooler, breezier, temperatures slightly below average.
